Formation of Polyimide Membranes via Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation: Insight from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Molecular dynamics simulations were applied to investigate the formation of P84 polyimide membranes through the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process, considering two scenarios: one using a conventional organic solvent like n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and the other a greener alternative, γ-butyrolactone (GBL), with water serving as the non-solvent. Different compositions of polymer solutions were established along the binodal boundaries of the respective systems, derived from experimental cloud point data on the ternary phase diagram. The resulting polymer membranes were analyzed and compared in terms of their morphology. The wettability of their surfaces was notably affected by the polymer content in the initial casting solution and demonstrated a correlation with the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) specific surface area of the associated polymer nanostructures. The GBL solvent systems produced porous polymers qualitatively similar to those obtained with NMP, albeit with slightly narrower pore size distributions.

Thermodynamics and kinetic analysis of membrane: Challenges and perspectives

The ultimate structure of the membrane is determined using two important effects: (i) thermodynamic effect and (ii) kinetic effect. Controlling the mechanism of kinetic and thermodynamic processes in phase separation is essential for enhancing membrane performance. However, the relationship between system parameters and the ultimate membrane morphology is still largely empirical. This review focuses on the fundamental ideas behind thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) methods, including both kinetic and thermodynamic elements. The thermodynamic approach to understanding phase separation and the effect of different interaction parameters on membrane morphology has been discussed in detail. Furthermore, this review explores the capabilities and limitations of different macroscopic transport models used for the last four decades to explore the phase inversion process. The application of molecular simulations and phase field to understand phase separation has also been briefly examined. Finally, it discusses the thermodynamic approach to understanding phase separation and the consequence of different interaction parameters on membrane morphology, as well as possible directions for artificial intelligence to fill the gaps in the literature. This review aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and motivation for future modeling work for membrane fabrication via new techniques such as nonsolvent-TIPS, complex-TIPS, non-solvent assisted TIPS, combined NIPS-TIPS method, and mixed solvent phase separation.

Using Waste Plastics as Asphalt Modifier: A Review

The use of waste products in the production of asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures has become widespread due to economic and environmental benefits. In particular, the use of recycled waste plastic in asphalt binders and mixtures is gaining more attention. This review presents analyses and comparisons of various forms of waste plastic used in asphalt modification, and approaches to incorporating waste plastic into asphalt mixtures, both for single and composite modifications. It focuses on the properties of waste plastics, asphalt binders, and asphalt mixtures. Overall, the incorporation of plastic waste into asphalt mixtures can significantly improve high-temperature performance and has potential economic and environmental benefits. The performance of modified asphalt is highly dependent on multiple factors, such as waste sources, waste plastic dosages, blending conditions, and the pretreatment methods for waste plastic. There are different ways to apply waste plastics to blend into a mixture. In addition, this paper discusses the current challenges for waste plastic-modified asphalt, including the stability, low-temperature performance, modification mechanism, and laboratory problems of the blends. The use of chemical methods, such as additives and functionalization, is considered an effective way to achieve better interactions between waste plastics and the binder, as well as achieving a higher sufficiency utilization rate of waste plastics. Although both methods provide alternative options to produce waste plastic-modified asphalt with stability and high performance, the optimal proportion of materials used in the blends and the microcosmic mechanism of composite modified asphalt are not clear, and should be explored further.

Nonequilibrium Processes in Polymer Membrane Formation: Theory and Experiment

Porous polymer and copolymer membranes are useful for ultrafiltration of functional macromolecules, colloids, and water purification. In particular, block copolymer membranes offer a bottom-up approach to form isoporous membranes. To optimize permeability, selectivity, longevity, and cost, and to rationally design fabrication processes, direct insights into the spatiotemporal structure evolution are necessary. Because of a multitude of nonequilibrium processes in polymer membrane formation, theoretical predictions via continuum models and particle simulations remain a challenge. We compiled experimental observations and theoretical approaches for homo- and block copolymer membranes prepared by nonsolvent-induced phase separation and highlight the interplay of multiple nonequilibrium processes─evaporation, solvent-nonsolvent exchange, diffusion, hydrodynamic flow, viscoelasticity, macro- and microphase separation, and dynamic arrest─that dictates the complex structure of the membrane on different scales.

The rapid and controllable fabrication of large-scale and highly ordered micro-honeycomb arrays induced by nonsolvent phase separation

Structures that are highly ordered in nature show unique light propagation abilities. Among them, micro-honeycomb arrays are attractive owing to their advantages relating to the collection of light or enlarging the viewing angle and, also, owing to their potential applications in precision optics. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of droplet condensation on a cold surface, breath figure self-assembly has been a common approach used to fabricate such ordered micro-honeycomb arrays. However, the harsh preparation conditions and specific polymer architecture required have limited the widespread application of this approach. In this work, by using a commercial linear homopolymer and introducing its nonsolvent, we successfully fabricated uniform micro-honeycomb arrays on a large scale in just seconds and at ambient humidity. The morphology of the structures can be easily tuned via controlling the preparation conditions. Furthermore, high fill-factor convex micro-lenses were prepared based on the as-prepared concave micro-honeycomb arrays as templates through a simple replication process. They demonstrate properties such as clear multiple image presentation and light diffraction. They can also assist the strong scattering of light, which enhances the fluorescent intensity by more than 10%. This method is envisaged as a potential candidate to replace breath figure self-assembly for micro-honeycomb arrays in a low-cost and high-efficiency manner under mild conditions.

Thermodynamic Modeling and Validation of the Temperature Influence in Ternary Phase Polymer Systems

The effect of the temperature, as a process variable in the fabrication of polymeric membranes by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique, has been scarcely studied. In the present work, we studied the influence of temperature, working at 293, 313 and 333 K, on the experimental binodal curves of four ternary systems composed of PVDF and PES as the polymers, DMAc and NMP as the solvents and water as the non-solvent. The increase of the temperature caused an increase on the solubility gap of the ternary system, as expected. The shift of the binodal curve with the temperature was more evident in PVDF systems than in PES systems indicating the influence of the rubbery or glassy state of the polymer on the thermodynamics of phase separation. As a novelty, the present work has introduced the temperature influence on the Flory-Huggins model to fit the experimental cloud points. Binary interaction parameters were calculated as a function of the temperature: (i) non-solvent/solvent (g₁₂) expressions with UNIFAC-Dortmund methodology and (ii) non-solvent/polymer (χ₁₃) and solvent/polymer (χ₂₃) using Hansen solubility parameters. Additionally, the effect of the ternary interaction term was not negligible in the model. Estimated ternary interaction parameters (χ₁₂₃) presented a linear relation with temperature and negative values, indicating that the solubility of the polymers in mixtures of solvent/non-solvent was higher than expected for single binary interaction. Finally, PES ternary systems exhibited higher influence of the ternary interaction parameter than PVDF systems.

Fabrication of a PVDF membrane with tailored morphology and properties via exploring and computing its ternary phase diagram for wastewater treatment and gas separation applications

We report a simple approach for tailoring the morphology of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes fabricated using a nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method that sustains both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. Various membrane structures, i.e. skin layers and whole membrane structures as well, were obtained via an experimental method based on the obtained and computed ternary phase diagram. The nonsolvent interactions with polymer solution resulted in the different forms and properties of a surface layer of fabricated membranes that affected the overall transport of solvent and nonsolvent molecules inside and outside the bulk of the fabricated membranes. The resulting morphology and properties were confirmed using the 3D optical profiler, SEM, FT-IR and XRD methods. The effect of binary interaction parameters on the morphology of the fabricated membranes and on their separation performance was tested using water/oil mixture and gas separation. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of PVDF showed the excellent durable separation performance of the prepared membranes with 92% of oil separation and the maximum flux of 395 L h^-1 m^-2 along with 120 min of long-term stability. CO₂ separation from H₂, N₂, CH₄ and SF₆ gases was performed to further support the effect of tuned PVDF membranes with different micro/nanostructured morphologies. The gas performance demonstrated ultrahigh permeability and a several-fold greater than the Knudsen separation factor. The results demonstrate a facile and inexpensive approach can be successfully applied for the tailoring of the PVDF membranes to predict and design the resulting membrane structure.

Electrospun Weak Anion-exchange Fibrous Membranes for Protein Purification

Membrane based ion-exchange (IEX) and hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) for protein purification is often used to remove impurities and aggregates operated under the flow-through mode. IEX and HIC are also limited by capacity and recovery when operated under bind-and-elute mode for the fractionation of proteins. Electrospun nanofibrous membrane is characterized by its high surface area to volume ratio and high permeability. Here tertiary amine ligands are grafted onto the electrospun polysulfone (PSf) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane substrates using UV-initiated polymerization. Static and dynamic binding capacities for model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) were determined under appropriate bind and elute buffer conditions. Static and dynamic binding capacities in the order of ~100 mg/mL were obtained for the functionalized electrospun PAN membranes whereas these values reached ~200 mg/mL for the functionalized electrospun PSf membranes. Protein recovery of over 96% was obtained for PAN-based membranes. However, it is only 56% for PSf-based membranes. Our work indicates that surface modification of electrospun membranes by grafting polymeric ligands can enhance protein adsorption due to increased surface area-to-volume ratio.
