Abstract
Efficient oil-water separation has always been a research hotspot in the field of environmental studies. Employing a one-step hydrothermal approach, NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanosheets were synthesized on nickel foam substrates. The resulting NiFe-LDH/NF membrane exhibited rejection rates exceeding 99% across six diverse oil-water mixtures, concurrently demonstrating a remarkable ultra-high flux of 1.4 × 106 L·m-2·h-1. This flux value significantly surpasses those documented in existing literature, maintaining stable performance over 1000 manual filtration cycles. These breakthroughs stem from the synergistic interplay among the three-dimensional channels of the nickel foam, the nanosheets, and the hydration layer. By leveraging the pore size of the foam to enhance the functionality of the hydration layer, the conventional trade-off between permeability and selectivity was transformed into a balanced force relationship between the hydration layer and the oil phase. The operational and failure mechanisms of the hydration layer were examined using the prepared NiFe-LDH/NF membrane, validating the correlation between oil phase viscosity and density with hydration layer rupture. Additionally, an extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory was employed to investigate changes in interaction energy, further reinforcing the study's findings. This research contributes novel insights and assistance to the comprehension and application of hydration layers in other membrane studies dedicated to oil-water separation.

Abstract
Confronting the pressing challenge of freshwater scarcity, polymeric membrane-based water treatment technology has emerged as an essential and effective approach. Poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) polymers, a class of high-performance engineering thermoplastics, have garnered attention in recent decades as promising membrane materials for advanced water treatment approaches. The PAE-Based membranes are employed to resist the shortages of most common polymeric membranes, such as chemical instability, structural damage, membrane fouling, and shortened lifespan when deployed in harsh environments, owing to their excellent comprehensive performance. This article presents the advancements in the research of several typical PAEs, including poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), polyethersulfone (PES), and poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN). Techniques for membrane formation, modification strategies, and applications in water treatment have been reviewed. The applications encompass processes for oil/water separation, desalination, and wastewater treatment, which involve the removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, oils, and other organic pollutants. The commendable performance of these membranes has been summarized in terms of corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, anti-fouling properties, and durability in challenging environments. In addition, several recommendations for further research aimed at developing efficient and robust PAE-based membranes are proposed.

Abstract
Patients suffering bone fractures in different parts of the body require implants that will enable similar function to that of the natural bone that they are replacing. Joint diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis) also require surgical intervention with implants such as hip and knee joint replacement. Biomaterial implants are utilized to fix fractures or replace parts of the body. For the majority of these implant cases, either metal or polymer biomaterials are chosen in order to have a similar functional capacity to the original bone material. The biomaterials that are employed most often for implants of bone fracture are metals such as stainless steel and titanium, and polymers such as polyethene and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). This review compared metallic and synthetic polymer implant biomaterials that can be employed to secure load-bearing bone fractures due to their ability to withstand the mechanical stresses and strains of the body, with a focus on their classification, properties, and application.

Abstract
In recent years, efficient oil-water separation has gradually become an indispensable part of environmental treatment. Superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials with excellent self-cleaning performance are urgently required and remain challenging in the investigation of practical, rapid, and efficient separation of oil-water mixture and emulsion, especially those with robust surfaces that can be used in harsh conditions. In this work, a novel superhydrophobic/superoleophilic material was first fabricated by in situ constructing PDMS@ZIF-7/Cu3(PO4)2 hierarchical architectures on a copper mesh, which was adopted as a high flux and efficient separation material for gravity-driven separation of oil-water mixture as well as emulsion. The introduction of crucial Cu3(PO4)2 nanosheet interlayers created the ideal hierarchical structures and serve as partial templates for the subsequent in situ growth of hydrophobic ZIF-7 nanosheets. An improved superhydrophobicity (CA = 155°), permeation flux (102,000 L m-2 h-1), and preferred self-cleaning property were thus achieved by such manipulation of the copper mesh. The PDMS@ZIF-7/Cu3(PO4)2 mesh exhibited exceptional separation efficiency for diverse oil-water mixtures and emulsions attributed to the superhydrophobicity and the demulsification ability and considerable stability to cope with extreme environments including sunlight resistance, low temperature, and corrosion resistance, which prompted its promising applicability in cleaning emulsified wastewater.

Abstract
Water is a critical component for humans to survive, especially in arid lands or areas where fresh water is scarce. Hence, desalination is an excellent way to effectuate the increasing water demand. Membrane distillation (MD) technology entails a membrane-based non-isothermal prominent process used in various applications, for instance, water treatment and desalination. It is operable at low temperature and pressure, from which the heat demand for the process can be sustainably sourced from renewable solar energy and waste heat. In MD, the water vapors are gone through the membrane's pores and condense at permeate side, rejecting dissolved salts and non-volatile substances. However, the efficacy of water and biofouling are the main challenges for MD due to the lack of appropriate and versatile membrane. Numerous researchers have explored different membrane composites to overcome the above-said issue, and attempt to develop efficient, elegant, and biofouling-resistant novel membranes for MD. This review article addresses the 21st-century water crises, desalination technologies, principles of MD, the different properties of membrane composites alongside compositions and modules of membranes. The desired membrane characteristics, MD configurations, role of electrospinning in MD, characteristics and modifications of membranes used for MD are also highlighted in this review.

Abstract
Since superwetting surfaces have emerged, on-demand oil/water separation materials serve as a new direction for meeting practical needs. This new separation mode uses a single porous material to allow oil-removing and water-removing to be achieved alternately. In this review, the fundamentals of wettability are systematically summarized in oil/water separation. Most importantly, the two states, bioinspired surface and intelligent surface, are summarized for on-demand oil/water separation. Specifically, bioinspired surfaces include micro/nanostructures, bioinspired chemistry, Janus-featured surfaces, and dual-superlyophobic surfaces that these superwetting materials can possess asymmetric wettability in one structure system or opposite underliquid wettability by prewetting. Furthermore, an intelligent surface can be adopted by various triggers such as pH, thermal and photo stimuli, etc., to control wettability for switchable oil/water separation reversibly, expressing a thought beyond nature to realize innovative oil/water separation by external stimuli. Remarkably, this review also discusses the advantages of all the materials mentioned above, expanding the separation scope from the on-demand oil/water mixtures to the multiphase immiscible liquid-liquid mixtures. Finally, the prospects of on-demand oil/water separation materials are also concluded.

Abstract
Water purification and water desalination via membrane technology are generally deemed as reliable supplementaries for abundant potable water. Electrospun nanofiber-based membranes (ENMs), benefitting from characteristics such as a higher specific surface area, higher porosity, lower thickness, and possession of attracted broad attention, has allowed it to evolve into a promising candidate rapidly. Here, great attention is placed on the current status of ENMs with two categories according to the roles of electrospun nanofiber layers: (i) nanofiber layer serving as a selective layer, (ii) nanofiber layer serving as supporting substrate. For the nanofiber layer’s role as a selective layer, this work presents the structures and properties of conventional ENMs and mixed matrix ENMs. Fabricating parameters and adjusting approaches such as polymer and cosolvent, inorganic and organic incorporation and surface modification are demonstrated in detail. It is crucial to have a matched selective layer for nanofiber layers acting as a supporting layer. The various selective layers fabricated on the nanofiber layer are put forward in this paper. The fabrication approaches include inorganic deposition, polymer coating, and interfacial polymerization. Lastly, future perspectives and the main challenges in the field concerning the use of ENMs for water treatment are discussed. It is expected that the progress of ENMs will promote the prosperity and utilization of various industries such as water treatment, environmental protection, healthcare, and energy storage.

Abstract
The properties of separators significantly affect the efficiency, stability, and safety of the lithium-based batteries. Therefore, the improvement of the separator material is critical. Polyetherketone (PEK) has excellent general properties, such as mechanical strength, chemical stability, and thermal stability. Thus, it is expected to be an optimal separator material. However, its low solubility-induced poor processibility makes it difficult to be used for nanoscale product manufacturing. In this work, the soluble precursor polymer is prepared by introducing a "protecting" group into monomer, and fabricated into nanofiber membrane, which can be converted into polyetherketone nanofiber membrane by a simple acid treatment. The membrane prepared by this chemical-induced crystallization method exhibits superior chemical, thermal stability, and mechanical strength. Li-O2 batteries with the fabricated membrane as separator have a high cycling stability (194 cycles at 200 mA g-1 and 500 mAh g-1 ). This work broadens the application field of PEK and provides a potential route for battery separators.

Abstract
Membrane separation has been considered to be the most effective decontamination method for oily waste water. The most significant point of membrane separation is the resistance against membrane fouling. Fabricating hierarchical architectures on the membrane surface is an available approach to improving its anti-fouling property. In this study, ZnO nanoneedles were successfully anchored onto surface-sulfonated poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) felt via UV/ozone cleaning and hydrothermal synthesis. The modified felt (PEEK-f-Z) showed much better anti-fouling properties and far higher rejection height (33 cm) than the unmodified felt (17 cm) with a separation efficiency up to 99.99%. The enhanced separation properties could be attributed to the stronger water locking capability of the hierarchical architectures on the surface. Furthermore, benefiting from the great chemical stability of PEEK substrates and ZnO nanoneedles, the as-prepared membrane exhibited admirable solvent resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. As a result, PEEK-f-Z could even separate immiscible organic liquids with different polarities and collect hot water from the oil/water mixture, promising to be used under severe conditions.
