Abstract
Synthetic melanin is a mimic of natural melanin analogue with intriguing properties such as metal-ion chelation, redox activity, adhesion, and broadband absorption. Melanin-inspired composite materials are formulated by assembly of melanin with other types of inorganic and organic components to target, combine, and build up the functionality, far beyond their natural capabilities. Developing efficient and universal methodologies to prepare melanin-based composite materials with unique functionality is vital for their further applications. In this review, we summarize three types of synthetic approaches, predoping, surface engineering, and physical blending, to access various melanin-inspired composite materials with distinctive structure and properties. The applications of melanin-inspired composite materials in free radical scavenging, bioimaging, antifouling, and catalytic applications are also reviewed. This review also concludes current challenges that must be addressed and research opportunities in future studies.

Abstract
Encrustation, caused by deposition of calcium and magnesium salts present in urine, is a common problem of indwelling urinary devices, such as ureteral stent. Encrustation was also found to be related to urinary tract infections; thus, it is necessary to prepare ureteral stents with antibacterial and antifouling surfaces to mitigate the occurrence of encrustation. In this study, commercial ureteral stent was coated with polydopamine (PDA), formed from self-polymerization of dopamine. The PDA coating was optimized in terms of dopamine concentration, pH, and coating time using response surface methodology. The chosen response parameters for optimization were calcium oxalate (CaC2 O4 ) encrustation and protein adsorption. Optimized PDA coating conditions were determined to be the following: pH 9.0, 2 mg/mL DA, and 3 days coating. The optimized PDA-coated ureteral stent exhibited outstanding resistance against CaC2 O4 encrustation, protein fouling, and bacterial adhesion due to its hydrophilic and functional coating layer. In comparison with the pristine ureteral stent, PDA coating was able to suppress approximately 97% and 87% of CaC2 O4 and protein adsorption, respectively. The PDA-coated ureteral stent was compared against those of commercially available ureteral stents and found to have superior encrustation and protein fouling mitigation performance. Finally, PDA coating was found to be highly stable for a storage period of 90 days, whether stored in wet or dry conditions.

Abstract
Polymeric nanomaterials, which have tuneable chemical structures, versatile functionalities, and good compatibility with polymeric matrices, have attracted increasing interest from researchers for the construction of polymeric nano-based separation membranes. With their distinctive nanofeatures, polymeric nano-based membranes show great promise in overcoming bottlenecks in polymer membranes, namely, the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, low stability, and fouling issues. Accordingly, recent studies have focused on tuning the structures and tailoring the surface properties of polymeric nano-based membranes via exploitation of membrane fabrication techniques and surface modification strategies, with the objective of pushing the performance of polymeric nano-based membranes to a new level. In this review, first, the approaches for fabricating polymeric nano-based mixed matrix membranes and homogeneous membranes are summarized, such as surface coating, phase inversion, interfacial polymerization, and self-assembly methods. Next, the manipulation strategies of membrane surface properties, namely, the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, charge characteristics, and surface roughness, and interior microstructural properties, namely, the pore size and content, channel construction and regulation, are comprehensively discussed. Subsequently, the separation performances of liquid ions/molecules and gas molecules through polymeric nano-based membranes are systematically reported. Finally, we conclude this review with an overview of various unsolved scientific and technical challenges that are associated with new opportunities in the development of advanced polymeric nano-based membranes.

Abstract
A signal-enhanced photoelectrochemical immunoassay technique for detecting neuron specific enolase (NSE) was proposed. As a photoactive matrix, (Ce,Ag):Sb2WO6 was firstly investigated via doping Ce and Ag into Sb2WO6. It could be found that the presence of Ce and Ag not only had enormous variation on the morphology of Sb2WO6, but also showed excellent PEC behavior. In order to further improve the visible light utilization rate of (Ce,Ag):Sb2WO6, In2S3 was modified onto the surface of (Ce,Ag):Sb2WO6 to enhance visible light absorption. In addition, the CdS/PDA was served as a secondary antibody marker to further amplify signal. Especially, PDA as an electron donor could effectively remove photogenerated holes. Meanwhile, the good matching cascade band-edge levels between CdS and Sb2WO6 could promote photoelectron migration, improve the PEC response, and achieve sensitive detection of NSE. Under the selected excellent conditions, the photocurrent can linearly increase with the increase of NSE concentration in the operating range from 0.1 pg/mL to 50 ng/mL, and the limit of detection is 1.57 fg/mL. The constructed immunosensor also exhibits satisfactory stability, selectivity, and reproducibility, and it creates conditions for the detection of other biomolecules.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted nanocomposite membranes with three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based structure (MINMs-TM) were successfully prepared by using propranolol as template molecule. Importantly, for the first time, polycarbonate track etch membranes had been used as the supporting surfaces to construct the polydopamine (PDA)-induced MOFs composite structure, in which the as-prepared PDA-modified surface would promote the crystallization and nucleation of ZIF-8-based composite layer. Based on the entire preparation processes of our design, the as-prepared PDA-induced ZIF-8-modified surfaces could be regarded as the imprinted-initiated units of sol-gel imprinting polymerization. Abundant recognition sits of propranolol were achieved in MINMs-TM, which showed characteristic properties of permeability and selectivity. Therefore, high adsorption capacity (41.31 mg/g) and fast adsorption equilibrium rate (within 30 min) had been successfully achieved. Meanwhile, excellent permselectivity rates (β) of MINMs-TM toward propranolol were also obtained as 5.04, 4.79 and 5.14, which MINMs-TM the successful synthesis of high-affinity and high-density propranolol-imprinted sites. Overall, for the practical selective separation and scalability, we had successfully MINMs-TM the preparation of MINMs-TM-based to selective rebinding and separation of propranolol from complex solution system and mimetic water sample, which had further confirmed the desired and potential applications of many environmental pollutants.

Abstract
Here, the graphene oxide (GO)/SiO2-loaded dual-imprinted membranes (GS-DIMs) were constructed based on the self-polymerization imprinting technique of dopamine, in which a twice polydopamine (PDA)-based imprinting strategy had been successfully developed to obtain the three-dimensional nanocomposite membrane-based separation system. Meanwhile, the pollution-intensive antibiotics of tetracycline (TC) was used as template molecule throughout the GS-DIMs synthesis, and the dopamine molecules were simultaneously used as functional monomer and cross-linking agent during the twice polydopamine (PDA)-based imprinting processes. Therefore, dual-TC-imprinted sites had been prepared based on the as-designed dual imprinting processes, the as-prepared GS-DIMs-based separation system with dual-TC-imprinted structures could not only allow for the largely enhanced rebinding result of 65.61 mg/g and faster adsorption equilibrium rate within 20 min, but also facilitate the permselectivity performance from TC-based complex separation system and mimetic water sample. Importantly, we demonstrated the applications and effects of the dual-imprinted membrane-based separation materials to selective rebinding and separation of TC from complex solution systems and mimetic water samples. The as-obtained permselectivity factors (β) around 4.0 strongly illustrated the efficiently selective separation ability and high-intensitive recognizability of TC than any other non-template molecules based on our GS-DIMs-based separation system. Overall, the as-designed GS-DIMs had great potential for selective separation applications and provided critical comparisons based on the as-achieved excellent rebinding and permselectivity performance, which encompassed innovative GO/SiO2-loaded nanocomposite and PDA-based dual-TC-imprinted system.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) with sufficient and even-distributed recognition sites that can break the permeability-selectivity trade-off phenomenon are desirable in chemical field of selective separation. Herein graphene oxide (GO)/TiO2-loaded nanocomposite fibrous membranes were prepared by developing two kinds of tetracycline (TC)-imprinted systems in the same MIMs-based material. Thereinto, polydopamine-based and sol-gel-based imprinting processes were applied to the synthesis of GO/TiO2-loaded dual-imprinted mixed matrix membranes (GT-DIMs). The as-prepared GT-DIMs encompassed innovative GO/TiO2-based nanocomposite fibrous channels and two kinds of TC-imprinted systems, and critical comparisons regarding the fluxes, rebinding capacities and permselectivity were provided and studied. Importantly, dual-imprinted system of GT-DIMs could not only allow for largely enhanced rebinding result (70.63 mg/g) and fast adsorption equilibrium rate within 30 min, but also facilitate the high permselectivity of TC in complex separation systems and lab-simulated wastewater samples. The permselectivity factors were all around 5.0, which strongly demonstrated the efficiently selective recognition and separation performance of GT-DIMs. Overall, based on testing results of practical separation and scalability, excellent structural stability and separation continuity had been successfully obtained for selective separation applications of pollutants.
