Production and Bioconversion Efficiency of Enzyme Membrane Bioreactors in the Synthesis of Valuable Products

The demand for bioactive molecules with nutritional benefits and pharmaceutically important properties is increasing, leading researchers to develop modified production strategies with low-cost purification processes. Recent developments in bioreactor technology can aid in the production of valuable products. Enzyme membrane bioreactors (EMRs) are emerging as sustainable synthesis processes in various agro-food industries, biofuel applications, and waste management processes. EMRs are modified reactors used for chemical reactions and product separation, particularly large-molecule hydrolysis and the conversion of macromolecules. EMRs generally produce low-molecular-weight carbohydrates, such as oligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides, and gentiooligosaccharides. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the use of EMRs for the production of valuable products, such as oligosaccharides and oligodextrans, and we discuss their application in the bioconversion of inulin, lignin, and sugars. Furthermore, we critically summarize the application and limitations of EMRs. This review provides important insights that can aid in the production of valuable products by food and pharmaceutical industries, and it is intended to assist scientists in developing improved quality and environmentally friendly prebiotics using EMRs.

Gluco-oligosaccharides as potential prebiotics: Synthesis, purification, structural characterization, and evaluation of prebiotic effect

Prebiotics have long been used to modulate the gut microbiota and improve host health. Most established prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates, especially short-chain oligosaccharides. Recently, gluco-oligosaccharides (GlcOS) with 2-10 glucose residues and one or more O-glycosidic linkage(s) have been found to exert prebiotic potentials (not fully established prebiotics) because of their selective fermentation by beneficial gut bacteria. However, the prebiotic effects (non-digestibility, selective fermentability, and potential health effects) of GlcOS are highly variable due to their complex structure originating from different synthesis processes. The relationship between GlcOS structure and their potential prebiotic effects has not been fully understood. To date, a comprehensive summary of the knowledge of GlcOS is still missing. Therefore, this review provides an overview of GlcOS as potential prebiotics, covering their synthesis, purification, structural characterization, and prebiotic effect evaluation. First, GlcOS with different structures are introduced. Then, the enzymatic and chemical processes for GlcOS synthesis are critically reviewed, including reaction mechanisms, substrates, catalysts, the structures of resultant GlcOS, and the synthetic performance (yield and selectivity). Industrial separation techniques for GlcOS purification and structural characterization methods are discussed in detail. Finally, in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate the non-digestibility, selective fermentability, and associated health effects of different GlcOS are extensively reviewed with a special focus on the GlcOS structure-function relationship.

Logarithmic Data Processing Can Be Used Justifiably in the Plotting of a Calibration Curve

The article is a response to a recent opinion piece that log concentration values should not be applied in analytical chemistry. An essential aim in the development of analytical chemistry methods is to obtain more sensitive and accurate detection values. For the application of chemical analysis methods, the obtained experiment data need to fit with the mathematical functions in the first place. As influenced by different detection principles and analytical methods, data can be displayed in a coordinate system with two linear axes for linear function fitting, or the data can first be taken through a logarithmic transformation and then for function fitting. Using raw data or data after logarithmic transformation primarily depends on analytical principles, without special rules of data formats. For example, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric data are more suitable for direct linear fitting. However, enzyme-catalyzed reaction or electrochemical data in logarithmic form are more appropriate for function fitting. This transformation of data form will not affect the soundness of fit statistics; rather, it simplifies the complexity of function analysis and calculation, which are the essence of analytical chemistry. In this brief article, we provide justification and legitimacy of the application of logarithmic processing in various fields of quantitative analytical chemistry.
