Unveiling the spatiotemporal dynamics of membrane fouling: A focused review on dynamic fouling characterization techniques and future perspectives

Membrane technology has emerged as a crucial method for obtaining clean water from unconventional sources in the face of water scarcity. It finds wide applications in wastewater treatment, advanced treatment, and desalination of seawater and brackish water. However, membrane fouling poses a huge challenge that limits the development of membrane-based water treatment technologies. Characterizing the dynamics of membrane fouling is crucial for understanding its development, mechanisms, and effective mitigation. Instrumental techniques that enable in situ or real-time characterization of the dynamics of membrane fouling provide insights into the temporal and spatial evolution of fouling, which play a crucial role in understanding the fouling mechanism and the formulation of membrane control strategies. This review consolidates existing knowledge about the principal advanced instrumental analysis technologies employed to characterize the dynamics of membrane fouling, in terms of membrane structure, morphology, and intermolecular forces. Working principles, applications, and limitations of each technique are discussed, enabling researchers to select appropriate methods for their specific studies. Furthermore, prospects for the future development of dynamic characterization techniques for membrane fouling are discussed, underscoring the need for continued research and innovation in this field to overcome the challenges posed by membrane fouling.

IEF-CSNET: Information Enhancement and Fusion Network for Compressed Sensing Reconstruction

The rapidly growing requirement for data has put forward Compressed Sensing (CS) to realize low-ratio sampling and to reconstruct complete signals. With the intensive development of Deep Neural Network (DNN) methods, performance in image reconstruction from CS measurements is constantly increasing. Currently, many network structures pay less attention to the relevance of before- and after-stage results and fail to make full use of relevant information in the compressed domain to achieve interblock information fusion and a great receptive field. Additionally, due to multiple resamplings and several forced compressions of information flow, information loss and network structure redundancy inevitably result. Therefore, an Information Enhancement and Fusion Network for CS reconstruction (IEF-CSNET) is proposed in this work, and a Compressed Information Extension (CIE) module is designed to fuse the compressed information in the compressed domain and greatly expand the receptive field. The Error Comprehensive Consideration Enhancement (ECCE) module enhances the error image by incorporating the previous recovered error so that the interlink among the iterations can be utilized for better recovery. In addition, an Iterative Information Flow Enhancement (IIFE) module is further proposed to complete the progressive recovery with loss-less information transmission during the iteration. In summary, the proposed method achieves the best effect, exhibits high robustness at this stage, with the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improved by 0.59 dB on average under all test sets and sampling rates, and presents a greatly improved speed compared with the best algorithm.

MRI on a new polymeric multichannel membrane for ultrafiltration

Membrane ultrafiltration in new polymeric multi-channel membranes designed for in-out filtration was investigated to get insights into structure, flow and filtration properties. The apparent novelty of the membrane concerns the geometry and configuration of the feed channels. In-situ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows non-invasive and non-destructive investigations with adequate spatial and time resolution. The structure of the new polymeric membrane was measured with an in-plane spatial resolution of 35 µm/pixel revealing first the polymer density distribution over the 19-channel membrane and second the wettability of the fiber and its cavities of different dimensions. MRI was also used to answer questions about flow and consequently feed distribution in the channels. Finally, in-situ filtration of an aqueous solution of sodium alginate was observed which led to deposit formation at the channel’s inner surfaces. The kinetics of this deposit formation was quantified. Backwashing and flushing gave insight into the cleanability of the channels.

Designing sustainable membrane-based water treatment via fouling control through membrane interface engineering and process developments

Membrane-based water treatment processes have been established as a powerful approach for clean water production. However, despite the significant advances made in terms of rejection and flux, provision of sustainable and energy-efficient water production is restricted by the inevitable issue of membrane fouling, known to be the major contributor to the elevated operating costs due to frequent chemical cleaning, increased transmembrane resistance, and deterioration of permeate flux. This review provides an overview of fouling control strategies in different membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane bioreactors, and desalination via reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. Insights into the recent advancements are discussed and efforts made in terms of membrane development, modules arrangement, process optimization, feed pretreatment, and fouling monitoring are highlighted to evaluate their overall impact in energy- and cost-effective water treatment. Major findings in four key aspects are presented, including membrane surface modification, modules design, process integration, and fouling monitoring. Among the above mentioned anti-fouling strategies, a large part of research has been focused on membrane surface modifications using a number of anti-fouling materials whereas much less research has been devoted to membrane module advancements and in-situ fouling monitoring and control. At the end, a critical analysis is provided for each anti-fouling strategy and a rationale framework is provided for design of efficient membranes and process for water treatment.

Study on Experiment and Simulation of Shear Force on Membrane with Dynamic Cross-Flow for Lignin in Black Liquor

To address the problem of lignin membrane fouling caused by dynamic cross-flow in the process of retaining and concentrating the black liquor byproduct of papermaking, this paper uses three different rotating structures (vane, disk and propeller) to increase the surface shear force and filtration flux of the membrane. In this paper, under different rotating speeds and different transmembrane pressure differences, numerical simulations were conducted on the shear forces generated by the three structures and the retention process on the surface of the membrane. The variation laws were also studied and compared. Under the same filtration conditions, the vane structure demonstrates better results than the propeller and disk structures in terms of increasing filtration flux. Based on the result, the vane shear force was simulated in terms of changing the particle deposition, and compared with vane rotating speeds of 100-700 r/min, the surface particle deposition of the membrane was significantly reduced at a rotating speed of 800 r/min. Finally, the numerical simulation results were experimentally validated to ensure the accuracy of the simulation. The findings provide a theoretical basis and practical value for solving the problem of lignin membrane fouling caused by dynamic cross-flow in the process of retaining and concentrating the black liquor byproduct of papermaking.
