Towards a systematic determination of multicomponent gas separation with membranes: the case of CO2/CH4 in cellulose acetates

A molecular simulation study on amine-functionalized silica/polysulfone mixed matrix membrane for mixed gas separation

Polysulfone (PSF) based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are one of the most broadly studied polymeric materials used for CO₂/CH₄ separation. The performance of existing PSF membranes encounters a bottleneck for widespread expansion in industrial applications due to the trade-off amongst permeability and selectivity. Membrane performance has been postulated to be enhanced via functionalization of filler at different weight percentages. Nonetheless, the preparation of functionalized MMMs without defects and its empirical study that exhibits improved CO₂/CH₄ separation performance is challenging at an experimental scale that needs prior knowledge of the compatibility between the filler and polymer. Molecular simulation approaches can be used to explore the effect of functionalization on MMM's gas transport properties at an atomic level without the challenges in the experimental study, however, they have received less scrutiny to date. In addition, most of the research has focused on pure gas studies while mixed gas transport properties that reflect real separation in functionalized silica/PSF MMMs are scarcely available. In this work, a molecular simulation computational framework has been developed to investigate the structural, physical properties and gas transport behavior of amine-functionalized silica/PSF-based MMMs. The effect of varying weight percentages (i.e., 15-30 wt.%) of amine-functionalized silica and gas concentrations (i.e., 30% CH₄/CO₂, 50% CH₄/CO₂, and 70% CH₄/CO₂) on physical and gas transport characteristics in amine-functionalized silica/PSF MMMs at 308.15 K and 1 atm has been investigated. Functionalization of silica nanoparticles was found to increase the diffusion and solubility coefficients, leading to an increase in the percentage enhancement of permeability and selectivity for amine-functionalized silica/PSF MMM by 566% and 56%, respectively, compared to silica/PSF-based MMMs at optimal weight percentage of 20 wt.%. The model's permeability differed by 7.1% under mixed gas conditions. The findings of this study could help to improve real CO₂/CH₄ separation in the future design and concept of functionalized MMMs using molecular simulation and empirical modeling strategies.

Molecular Characterization of Membrane Gas Separation under Very High Temperatures and Pressure: Single- and Mixed-Gas CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 Permselectivities in Hybrid Networks

This work illustrates the potential of using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) and grand-canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations prior to experiments in order to pre-screen candidate membrane structures for gas separation, under harsh conditions of temperature and pressure. It compares at 300 °C and 400 °C the CO₂/CH₄ and CO₂/N₂ sieving properties of a series of hybrid networks based on inorganic silsesquioxanes hyper-cross-linked with small organic PMDA or 6FDA imides. The inorganic precursors are the octa(aminopropyl)silsesquioxane (POSS), which degrades above 300 °C, and the octa(aminophenyl)silsesquioxane (OAPS), which has three possible meta, para or ortho isomers and is expected to resist well above 400 °C. As such, the polyPOSS-imide networks were tested at 300 °C only, while the polyOAPS-imide networks were tested at both 300 °C and 400 °C. The feed gas pressure was set to 60 bar in all the simulations. The morphologies and densities of the pure model networks at 300 °C and 400 °C are strongly dependent on their precursors, with the amount of significant free volume ranging from ~2% to ~20%. Since measurements at high temperatures and pressures are difficult to carry out in a laboratory, six isomer-specific polyOAPS-imides and two polyPOSS-imides were simulated in order to assess their N₂, CH₄ and CO₂ permselectivities under such harsh conditions. The models were first analyzed under single-gas conditions, but to be closer to the real processes, the networks that maintained CO₂/CH₄ and CO₂/N₂ ideal permselectivities above 2 were also tested with binary-gas 90%/10% CH₄/CO₂ and N₂/CO₂ feeds. At very high temperatures, the single-gas solubility coefficients vary in the same order as their critical temperatures, but the differences between the penetrants are attenuated and the plasticizing effect of CO₂ is strongly reduced. The single-gas diffusion coefficients correlate well with the amount of available free volume in the matrices. Some OAPS-based networks exhibit a nanoporous behavior, while the others are less permeable and show higher ideal permselectivities. Four of the networks were further tested under mixed-gas conditions. The solubility coefficient improved for CO₂, while the diffusion selectivity remained similar for the CO₂/CH₄ pair and disappeared for the CO₂/N₂ pair. The real separation factor is, thus, mostly governed by the solubility. Two polyOAPS-imide networks, i.e., the polyorthoOAPS-PMDA and the polymetaOAPS-6FDA, seem to be able to maintain their CO₂/CH₄ and CO₂/N₂ sieving abilities above 2 at 400 °C. These are outstanding performances for polymer-based membranes, and consequently, it is important to be able to produce isomer-specific polyOAPS-imides for use as gas separation membranes under harsh conditions.

Cellulose acetate in fabrication of polymeric membranes: A review

Developing biodegradable polymers to fabricate filtration membranes is one of the main challenges of membrane science and technology. Cellulose acetate (CA) membranes, due to their excellent film-forming property, high chemical and mechanical stability, high hydrophilicity, eco-friendly, and suitable cost, are extensively used in water and wastewater treatment, gas separation, and energy generation purposes. The CA is one of the first materials used to fabricate filtration membranes. However, in the last decade, the possibility of modification of CA to improve permeability and stability has attracted the researcher's attention again. This review is focused on the properties of cellulose derivatives and especially CA membranes in the fabrication of polymeric separation membranes in various applications such as filtration, gas separation, adsorption, and ion exchange membranes. Firstly, a brief introduction of CA properties and used molecular weights in the fabrication of membranes will be presented. After that, different configurations of CA membranes will be outlined, and the performance of CA membranes in several applications and configurations as the main polymer and as an additive in the fabrication of other polymer-based membranes will be discussed.

Recent Advances of Polymeric Membranes in Tackling Plasticization and Aging for Practical Industrial CO2/CH4 Applications—A Review

Membranes are a promising technology for bulk CO₂ separation from natural gas mixtures due to their numerous advantages. Despite the numerous fundamental studies on creating better quality membrane efficiency, scaling up the research work for field testing requires huge efforts. The challenge is to ensure the stability of the membrane throughout the operation while maintaining its high performance. This review addresses the key challenges in the application of polymeric technology for CO₂ separation, focusing on plasticization and aging. A brief introduction to the properties and limitations of the current commercial polymeric membrane is first deliberated. The effect of each plasticizer component in natural gas towards membrane performance and the relationship between operating conditions and the membrane efficiency are discussed in this review. The recent technological advancements and techniques to overcome the plasticization and aging issues covering polymer modification, high free-volume polymers, polymer blending and facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) have been highlighted. We also give our perspectives on a few main features of research related to polymeric membranes and the way forwards. Upcoming research must emphasize mixed gas with CO₂ including minor condensable contaminants as per real natural gas, to determine the competitive sorption effect on CO₂ permeability and membrane selectivity. The effects of pore blocking, plasticization and aging should be given particular attention to cater for large-scale applications.
