Solid-state polymer electrolytes with polypropylene separator-reinforced sandwich structure for room-temperature lithium ion batteries

Ultrathin, Mechanically Durable, and Scalable Polymer-in-Salt Solid Electrolyte for High-Rate Lithium Metal Batteries

Polymer-in-salt solid-state electrolytes (PIS SSEs) are emerging for high room-temperature ionic conductivity and facile handling, but suffer from poor mechanical durability and large thickness. Here, Al2O3-coated PE (PE/AO) separators are proposed as robust and large-scale substrates to trim the thickness of PIS SSEs without compromising mechanical durability. Various characterizations unravel that introducing Al2O3 coating on PE separators efficiently improves the wettability, thermal stability, and Li-dendrite resistance of PIS SSEs. The resulting PE/AO@PIS demonstrates ultra-small thickness (25 µm), exceptional mechanical durability (55.1 MPa), high decomposition temperature (330 °C), and favorable ionic conductivity (0.12 mS cm-1 at 25 °C). Consequently, the symmetrical Li cells remain stable at 0.1 mA cm-2 for 3000 h, without Li dendrite formation. Besides, the LiFePO4|Li full cells showcase excellent rate capability (131.0 mAh g-1 at 10C) and cyclability (93.6% capacity retention at 2C after 400 cycles), and high-mass-loading performance (7.5 mg cm-2). Moreover, the PE/AO@PIS can also pair with nickel-rich layered oxides (NCM811 and NCM9055), showing a remarkable specific capacity of 165.3 and 175.4 mAh g-1 at 0.2C after 100 cycles, respectively. This work presents an effective large-scale preparation approach for mechanically durable and ultrathin PIS SSEs, driving their practical applications for next-generation solid-state Li-metal batteries.

Gradual gradient distribution composite solid electrolyte for solid-state lithium metal batteries with ameliorated electrochemical performance

Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) have emerged as promising contenders for tackling the safety concerns associated with lithium metal batteries and attaining elevated energy densities. Nonetheless, augmenting ion conductivity and curtailing the growth of lithium dendrites within the electrolyte remain pressing challenges. We have developed CSEs featuring a unique structure, in which Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) is distributed in a gradient decline from the center to both sides (GCSE). This distinctive arrangement encompasses heightened polymer content at the edges, thereby enhancing the compatibility between CSEs and electrode materials. Concurrently, the escalated LLZTO content at the center functions to impede the proliferation of lithium dendrites. The uniform gradient distribution state facilitates the consistent and rapid transport of lithium ions. At room temperature, GCSE exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.5 × 10-4 S cm-1, with stable constant current cycling of lithium for over 1200 h. Furthermore, CR2032 coin batteries with a LiFePO4 (LFP)|GCSE|Li configuration demonstrate excellent rate performance and cycling stability, yielding a discharge capacity of 120 mA h g-1 at 0.5C and retaining 90 % capacity after 200 cycles at 60 °C. Flexible solid electrolytes with gradient structures offer substantial advantages in dealing with ion conductivity and inhibition of lithium dendrites, thereby expected to propel the practical application of lithium metal batteries.

Smart and Multifunctional Materials Based on Electroactive Poly(vinylidene fluoride): Recent Advances and Opportunities in Sensors, Actuators, Energy, Environmental, and Biomedical Applications

From scientific and technological points of view, poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, is one of the most exciting polymers due to its overall physicochemical characteristics. This polymer can crystalize into five crystalline phases and can be processed in the form of films, fibers, membranes, and specific microstructures, being the physical properties controllable over a wide range through appropriate chemical modifications. Moreover, PVDF-based materials are characterized by excellent chemical, mechanical, thermal, and radiation resistance, and for their outstanding electroactive properties, including high dielectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric response, being the best among polymer systems and thus noteworthy for an increasing number of technologies. This review summarizes and critically discusses the latest advances in PVDF and its copolymers, composites, and blends, including their main characteristics and processability, together with their tailorability and implementation in areas including sensors, actuators, energy harvesting and storage devices, environmental membranes, microfluidic, tissue engineering, and antimicrobial applications. The main conclusions, challenges and future trends concerning materials and application areas are also presented.

A Highly Salt-Soluble Ketone-Based All-Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte with Superior Performances for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have great potential to be used in high-safety lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it is still a significant challenge for SPEs to develop high ionic conductivity, high mechanical strength, and good interior interfacial compatibility. In this work, a ketone-based all-solid-state electrolyte (PAD) resulting from allyl acetoacetate (AAA), diacetone acrylamide (DAAM), and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) was prepared by UV-inducing photopolymerization. The abundant ketone groups endow the prepared PAD all-solid-state electrolyte with strong dissociation of lithium salts and weak coordination interactions between ketone groups and Li⁺. Depending on the unique properties of the ketone groups in the electrolyte system, the prepared polymer electrolytes show a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.87 and a wide electrochemical window of 4.95 V. Furthermore, the PAD electrolyte also exhibits superior viscoelasticity, which is beneficial for good contact with electrodes. As a result, the assembled LFP/PAD/Li cells with PAD electrolytes show good cycle performance and rate performance. Concretely, the all-solid-state symmetric lithium cells with the PAD electrolyte can achieve stable lithium plating and stripping at 0.05 mA cm^-2 for over 1000 h at 60 °C. This work highlights the advantages of ketone-based electrolyte as a polymer electrolyte and provides a design method for advanced polymer electrolytes applied in high-performance solid lithium batteries.

Bacteria cellulose framework-supported solid composite polymer electrolytes for ambient-temperature lithium metal batteries

Composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) films with high room temperature ionic conductivity are urgently needed for the practical application of high-safety solid-state batteries (SSBs). Here, a flexible polymer-polymer CPE thin film reinforced by a three-dimensional (3D) bacterial cellulose (BC) framework derived from natural BC hydrogel was prepared via thein situphoto-polymerization method. The BC film was utilized as the supporting matrix to ensure high flexibility and mechanical strength. The BC-CPE attained a high room temperature ionic conductivity of 1.3 × 10^-4S cm^-1. The Li∣BC-CPE∣Li symmetric cell manifested stable cycles of more than 1200 h. The LCO∣BC-CPE∣Li full cell attained an initial discharge specific capacity of 128.7 mAh g^-1with 82.6% discharge capacity retention after 150 cycles at 0.2 C under room temperature. The proposed polymer-polymer CPE configuration represents a promising route for manufacturing environmental SSBs, especially since cellulose biomaterials are abundant in nature.

Double-Layer Solid Composite Electrolytes Enabling Improved Room-Temperature Cycling Performance for High-Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries

The development of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for high energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) usually needs to take into account of the interfacial compatibility against lithium metal and the electrolyte stability suitable for a high-potential cathode. In this study, through a facile two-step coating process, novel double-layer solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) with Janus characteristics are customized for the high-voltage LMBs with improved room-temperature cycling performance. Among which, high-voltage resistant poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is adopted here for the construction of an electrolyte layer facing the cathode, while the other layer against the lithium anode is composed of the polymer matrix of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blended with PVDF to obtain a lithium metal-friendly interface. With the further incorporation of Laponite clay, the PVDF/(PEO+PVDF)-L SCEs not only exhibit improved mechanical properties, but also achieve a highly increased ionic conductivity (5.2 × 10^-4 S cm^-1) and lithium ion migration number (0.471) at room temperature. The assembled NCM523|PVDF/(PEO+PVDF)-L SCEs|Li cells thus are able to deliver the initial discharge capacity of 153.9 mAh g^-1 with 80.8% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.3 C. Such easily manufactured double-layer SCEs capable of operating steadily at room temperature provide a competitive electrolyte option for high-voltage solid-state LMBs.

Epoxy-Based Interlocking Membranes for All Solid-State Lithium Ion Batteries: The Effects of Amine Curing Agents on Electrochemical Properties

In this study, a series of crosslinked membranes were prepared as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for all-solid-state lithium ion batteries (ASSLIBs). An epoxy-containing copolymer (glycidyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, PGA) and two amine curing agents, linear Jeffamine ED2003 and hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI), were utilized to prepare SPEs with various crosslinking degrees. The PGA/polyethylene oxide (PEO) blends were cured by ED2003 and PEI to obtain slightly and heavily crosslinked structures, respectively. For further optimizing the interfacial and the electrochemical properties, an interlocking bilayer membrane based on overlapping and subsequent curing of PGA/PEO/ED2003 and PEO/PEI layers was developed. The presence of this amino/epoxy network can inhibit PEO crystallinity and maintain the dimensional stability of membranes. For the slightly crosslinked PGA/PEO/ED2003 membrane, an ionic conductivity of 5.61 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹ and a lithium ion transference number (tLi⁺) of 0.43 were obtained, along with a specific capacity of 156 mAh g⁻¹ (0.05 C) acquired from an assembled half-cell battery. However, the capacity retention retained only 54% after 100 cycles (0.2 C, 80 °C), possibly because the PEO-based electrolyte was inclined to recrystallize after long term thermal treatment. On the other hand, the highly crosslinked PGA/PEO/PEI membrane exhibited a similar ionic conductivity of 3.44 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹ and a tLi⁺ of 0.52. Yet, poor interfacial adhesion between the membrane and the cathode brought about a low specific capacity of 48 mAh g⁻¹. For the reinforced interlocking bilayer membrane, an ionic conductivity of 3.24 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹ and a tLi⁺ of 0.42 could be achieved. Moreover, the capacity retention reached as high as 80% after 100 cycles (0.2 C, 80 °C). This is because the presence of the epoxy-based interlocking bilayer structure can block the pathway of lithium dendrite puncture effectively. We demonstrate that the unique interlocking bilayer structure is capable of offering a new approach to fabricate a robust SPE for ASSLIBs.
