Performance of different pretreatment methods on alleviating reverse osmosis membrane fouling caused by soluble microbial products

Integrating reverse osmosis and forward osmosis (RO-FO) for printing and dyeing wastewater treatment: impact of FO on water recovery

Reverse osmosis (RO) alone has low water recovery efficiency because of membrane fouling and limited operating pressure. In this study, a combined reverse osmosis-forward osmosis (RO-FO) process was used for the first time to improve the water recovery efficiency of secondary effluent in printing and dyeing wastewater. The effects of operating pressure and pH on water recovery and removal efficiency of RO-FO were investigated. The results showed that the optimum conditions were an operating pressure of 1.5 MPa and a feed solution pH of 9.0. Under optimal operating conditions, most of the organic and inorganic substances in the wastewater can be removed, and the rejection of total organic carbon (TOC), Sb, Ca, and K were 98.7, 99.3, 97.0, and 92.7%, respectively. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrices coupled with parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis indicated that two components (tryptophan and tyrosine) in the influent were effectively rejected by the hybrid process. The maximum water recovery (Rw, max) could reach 95%, which was higher than the current single RO process (75%). This research provided a feasible strategy to effectively recover water from printing and dyeing wastewater.

Molecular insights into membrane fouling caused by polysaccharides with different structures in polyaluminum chloride coagulation-ultrafiltration process

In this study, mechanisms of membrane fouling caused by polysaccharides with different molecular structures in polyaluminum chloride (PACl) coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) process were explored. Carrageenan and xanthan gum were chosen for model foulants of straight chain and branched chain polysaccharides, respectively. Filtration experiments showed that, with PACl dosage of 0-5 mM, specific filtration resistance (SFR) of carrageenan and xanthan solution showed a unimodal pattern and a continuous decrease pattern, respectively. A series of experimental characterizations indicated that the different SFR pattern was closely related to structure of foulants layer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggested that Al³⁺ preferentially coordinating with the terminal sulfonyl groups of carrageenan chains to promote gel layer formation at low PACl concentration (0.15 mM). There existed a chemical potential gap between bound water in gel layer and free water in the permeate, so that, filtration through gel layer corresponded to rather high SFR for overcoming this gap. In contrast, Al³⁺ coordinating with the non-terminal sulfonyl groups of carrageenan at high PACl concentration caused transition from gel layer to cake layer, leading to SFR decrease. However, xanthan gum itself can form a dense gel layer with a complex polymer network by virtue of the interlacing of main chains and branches. Al³⁺ coordinating with the carboxyl groups on branched chains of xanthan gum resulted in clusters of polymer chains and flocculation, corresponding to the reduced SFR. This proposed molecular-level mechanism well explained membrane fouling behaviors of polysaccharides with different molecular structure, and also facilitated to optimize C-UF process for water treatment.

CO2 as an Alternative to Traditional Antiscalants in Pressure-Driven Membrane Processes: An Experimental Study of Lab-Scale Operation and Cleaning Strategies

Scaling, or inorganic fouling, is a major factor limiting the performance of membrane-based water treatment processes in long-term operation. Over the past few decades, extensive studies have been conducted to control the scale growth found in membrane processes and to develop sustainable and greener processes. This study details the role of CO2 in scale inhibition in membrane processes. The core concept of CO2 utilization is to reduce the influent pH and to minimize the risk of scale formation from magnesium or calcium salts. Three reverse osmosis (RO) units were operated with a control (U1), CO2 (U2), and a commercial antiscalant, MDC-220 (U3). The performances of all the units were compared in terms of change in transmembrane pressure (TMP). The overall efficiency trend was found as U1 > U3 > U2. The membrane surfaces were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) for the morphological and elemental compositions, respectively. The surface analysis signified a significant increase in surface smoothness after scale deposition. The noticeable reduction in surface roughness can be described as a result of ionic deposition in the valley region. A sludge-like scale layer was found on the surface of the control membrane (U1) which could not be removed, even after an hour of chemical cleaning. After 20−30 min of cleaning, the U2 membrane was successfully restored to its original state. In brief, this study highlights the sustainable membrane process developed via CO2 utilization for scale inhibition, and the appropriate cleaning approaches.

Possibility assessment of ultrafiltration membrane pre-treatment efficiency for brackish water reverse osmosis-based wastewater reuse: Lab and demonstration

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are considered a pre-treatment for brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) membranes because of the high rejection rate of particulates and the productivity of the final water quantity. This study presents the performance and membrane surface property analysis of UF membranes for commercial membrane manufacturers, and their structural strength and chemical resistance were evaluated. Moreover, the pilot-scale UF-BWRO process was operated for two months using real wastewater based on the results of this study. Although the overall properties were similar, the poly (ether-sulfone) UF membrane showed higher tensile strength than the polyvinylidene difluoride and polyacrylonitrile UF membranes. The UF membrane showed a high removal rate of particulates (over 90%) but low rejection rate of organic compounds, such as humic acid and sodium alginate (below 30%). After exposure to high concentrations of chemicals, the contact angle of the membranes was reduced by approximately 15% compared to that of the virgin membranes. In addition, despite the exposure to low-and high-concentration chemicals, UF membranes were relatively stable in terms of tensile strength. During the operation period of the pilot-scale UF-RO process, the UF membrane showed a high turbidity removal of over 93%, and the UF-BWRO process presented a high salt rejection of over 92%. The UF membrane showed potential for the pre-treatment of BWRO membranes.

Pretreatment for alleviation of RO membrane fouling in dyeing wastewater reclamation

Adsorption and coagulation were commonly used to alleviate reverse osmosis (RO) membrane fouling caused by dissolved organic matters (DOM), but the effects of changed composition and structure of DOM in dyeing wastewater after adsorption and coagulation on RO membrane fouling have seldom been studied. This study aimed at resolving the mechanism how the RO membrane fouling during dyeing wastewater treatment was alleviated by using adsorption and coagulation. The dyeing wastewater caused serious RO membrane fouling. Pretreatment with granular activated carbon (GAC), polyferric sulfate (PFS) and polyaluminum chloride (PACl) were conducted. It was shown that GAC could remove most of the DOM (95%) and preferred to adsorb protein, hydrophobic neutrals and fluorescent compounds. Both coagulants of PFS and PACl preferred to remove polysaccharides (the removal rate was 9-19% higher than that of DOM), high-MW compounds and these compounds with high fouling potential. Afterwards, the RO membrane fouling potential of the dyeing wastewater was tested. The GAC and PFS performed well to alleviate fouling. After GAC treatment, the decline rate of RO flux was similar to that of raw wastewater after 6-fold dilution. With pretreatment by PFS or PACl, the fouling potential of dyeing wastewater was much lower than that of raw wastewater after diluted to the same DOM content. Changes in polysaccharides content in the DOM had more effects on RO membrane fouling than that of proteins after these pretreatment. Although the DOM changed significantly after pretreatment, the fouling type was still intermediate blocking.
