Annealing of grain-like poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) membranes with a single-crystalline electroactive phase and high anti-fouling activity

Enhanced Piezoelectric Performance of PVDF-TrFE Nanofibers through Annealing for Tissue Engineering Applications

This study investigates bioelectric stimulation's role in tissue regeneration by enhancing the piezoelectric properties of tissue-engineered grafts using annealed poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) scaffolds. Annealing at temperatures of 80°C, 100°C, 120°C, and 140°C was assessed for its impact on material properties and physiological utility. Analytical techniques such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) revealed increased crystallinity with higher annealing temperatures, peaking in β-phase content and crystallinity at 140°C. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed that 140°C annealed scaffolds had enhanced lamellar structures, increased porosity, and maximum piezoelectric response. Mechanical tests indicated that 140°C annealing improved elastic modulus, tensile strength, and substrate stiffness, aligning these properties with physiological soft tissues. In vitro assessments in Schwann cells demonstrated favorable responses, with increased cell proliferation, contraction, and extracellular matrix attachment. Additionally, genes linked to extracellular matrix production, vascularization, and calcium signaling were upregulated. The foreign body response in C57BL/6 mice, evaluated through Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and Picrosirius Red staining, showed no differences between scaffold groups, supporting the potential for future functional evaluation of the annealed group in tissue repair.

Enhanced Triboelectric Effects of Self-Poled MoS2-Embedded PVDF Hybrid Nanocomposite Films for Bar-Printed Wearable Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Self-poled molybdenum disulfide embedded polyvinylidene fluoride (MoS₂@PVDF) hybrid nanocomposite films fabricated by a bar-printing process are demonstrated to improve the output performances of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Comparative analyses of MoS₂@PVDF films with different MoS₂ concentrations and the synergic effect based on postannealing at different temperatures were examined to increase the triboelectric open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current (∼200 V and ∼11.8 μA, respectively). A further comprehensive study of the structural and electrical changes that occur on the surfaces of the proposed hybrid nanocomposite films revealed that both MoS₂ incorporation into PVDF and postannealing can individually promote the formation of the β-crystal phase and generate polarity in the PVDF. In addition, MoS₂, which provides triboelectric trap states, was found to play a significant role in improving the charge capture capacity of the nanocomposite film and increasing the potential difference between two electrodes of TENGs. The produced electrical energy of the developed wearable TENGs with excellent operational stability for a long duration was utilized to power a variety of mobile smart gadgets in addition to low-power electronic devices. We believe that this study can provide a simple and effective approach to improving the energy-harvesting capabilities of wearable TENGs based on hybrid nanocomposite films.

Desalination Characteristics of Cellulose Acetate FO Membrane Incorporated with ZIF-8 Nanoparticles

Forward osmosis membranes have a wide range of applications in the field of water treatment. However, the application of seawater desalination is restricted, so the research of forward osmosis membranes for seawater desalination poses new challenges. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was synthesized by a mechanical stirring method, and its crystal structure, surface morphology, functional group characteristics, thermochemical stability, pore size distribution and specific surface area were analyzed. The cellulose acetate (CA)/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane was prepared by using the synthesized ZIF-8 as a modified additive. The effects of the additive ZIF-8 content, coagulation bath temperature, mixing temperature and heat treatment temperature on the properties of the CA/ZIF-8 forward osmosis membrane were systematically studied, and the causes were analyzed to determine the best membrane preparation parameters. The structure of the CA membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membranes prepared under the optimal conditions were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle and Atomic force microscope (AFM). Finally, the properties of the HTI membrane (Membrane manufactured by Hydration Technology Innovations Inc.), CA forward osmosis membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane were compared under laboratory conditions. For the CA membrane, the water flux and reverse salt flux reached 48.85 L·m-2·h-1 and 3.4 g·m-2·h-1, respectively. The reverse salt flux and water flux of the CA/ZIF-8 membrane are 2.84 g·m-2·h-1 and 50.14 L·m-2·h-1, respectively. ZIF-8 has a promising application in seawater desalination.
