Determination of hazardous vapors from the thermal decomposition of organochlorinated silica xerogels with adsorptive properties

The incorporation of organic groups into sol-gel silica materials is known to have a noticeable impact on the properties and structure of the resulting xerogels due to the combination of the properties inherent to the organic fragments (functionality and flexibility) with the mechanical and structural stability of the inorganic matrix. However, the reduction of the inorganic content in the materials could be detrimental to their thermal stability properties, limiting the range of their potential applications. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the thermal stability of hybrid inorganic-organic silica xerogels prepared from mixtures of tetraethoxysilane and organochlorinated triethoxysilane precursors. To this end, a series of four materials with a molar percentage of organochlorinated precursor fixed at 10%, but differing in the type of organic group (chloroalkyls varying in the alkyl-chain length and chlorophenyl), has been selected as model case study. The gases and vapors released during the thermal decomposition of the samples under N2 atmosphere have been analyzed and their components determined and quantified using a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled to a Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer and to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry unit. These analyses have allowed to identify up to three different thermal events for the pyrolysis of the organochlorinated xerogel materials and to elucidate the reaction pathways associated with such processes. These mechanisms have been found to be strongly dependent on the specific nature of the organic group.

Performance Comparison of Cross- and Forward-Flow Configurations for Multiple-Effect Vacuum Membrane Distillation

This work addresses retrofitting the infrastructure of multiple-effect vacuum membrane distillation (V-MEMD) units by using cross-flow configuration (CFC). In this configuration, the feed water is evenly divided and distributed over the effects. In this case, the feed water stream for each effect is kept at a high temperature and low flow rate. This will lead to an increase in the vapor pressure gradient across the hydrophobic membrane and can also maintain the thermal energy of the stream inside the individual effect. It is found that CFC improves internal and global performance indicators of productivity, energy, and exergy. A mathematical model was used to investigate the performance of such a modification as compared to the forward-flow configuration (FFC). The cross-flow configuration led to a clear improvement in the internal performance indicators of the V-MEMD unit, where specifically the mass flux, recovery ratio, gain output ratio, and heat recovery factor were increased by 2 to 3 folds. Moreover, all the global performance indicators were also enhanced by almost 2 folds, except for the performance indicators related to the heat pump, which is used to cool the cold water during the operation of the V-MEMD unit. For the heat pump system, the specific electrical energy consumption, SEEC, and the exergy destruction percentage, Ψ_des, under the best-operating conditions, were inferior when the feed water flow was less than 159 L/h. This can be attributed to the fact that the heat rejected from the heat pump system is not fully harnessed.

Network Structure Engineering of Organosilica Membranes for Enhanced CO2 Capture Performance

The membrane separation process for targeted CO2 capture application has attracted much attention due to the significant advantages of saving energy and reducing consumption. High-performance separation membranes are a key factor in the membrane separation system. In the present study, we conducted a detailed examination of the effect of calcination temperatures on the network structures of organosilica membranes. Bis(triethoxysilyl)acetylene (BTESA) was selected as a precursor for membrane fabrication via the sol-gel strategy. Calcination temperatures affected the silanol density and the membrane pore size, which was evidenced by the characterization of FT-IR, TG, N2 sorption, and molecular size dependent gas permeance. BTESA membrane fabricated at 500 °C showed a loose structure attributed to the decomposed acetylene bridges and featured an ultrahigh CO2 permeance around 15,531 GPU, but low CO2/N2 selectivity of 3.8. BTESA membrane calcined at 100 °C exhibited satisfactory CO2 permeance of 3434 GPU and the CO2/N2 selectivity of 22, displaying great potential for practical CO2 capture application.
