Abstract
A high phosphoric acid uptake and retention capacity are crucial for the high performance and stable operation of phosphoric acid/polybenzimidazole (PA/PBI)-based high-temperature proton exchange membranes. In this work, amine end-functionalized side-chain grafted PBI (AGPBI) with different grafting degrees are synthesized to enhance both the phosphoric acid uptake and the acid retention ability of the accordingly formed membranes. The optimized acid-base membrane exhibits a PA uptake of 374.4% and an anhydrous proton conductivity of 0.067 S cm-1 at 160 °C, with the remaining proton conductivity percentages of 91.0% after a 100 h stability test. The accordingly fabricated membrane electrode assembly deliver peak power densities of 0.407 and 0.638 W cm-2 under backpressure of 0 and 200 kPa, which are significantly higher than 0.305 and 0.477 W cm-2 for the phosphoric acid-doped unmodified PBI membrane under the same conditions.

Abstract
We reported a new ternary hybrid anhydrous proton-conducting material based on triazole (Tz), wherein it interacted with TiO2 and cesium hydrogen sulfate (CHS) constructed based on the acid-base interaction. It exhibited high proton conductivity derived by the two acid-base interactions: between CHS and Tz and between Tz and TiO2. As a starting point of discussion, we attempted to theoretically predict the high/low proton conductivity using the push-pull protonated atomic distance (PAD) law, which makes it possible to predict the proton conductivity in the acid-base part based on density functional theory. The calculations indicate the possibility of achieving higher proton conductivity in the ternary composites (CHS·Tz-TiO2) involving two acid-base interactions than in binary hybrids, such as CHS·Tz and TiO2-Tz composites, suggesting the positive effect of two simultaneous acid-base interactions for achieving high proton conductivity. This result is supported by the experimental result with respect to synthesized materials obtained using the mechanochemical method. Adding TiO2 to the CHS·Tz system causes a change in the CHS·Tz interaction and promotes proton dissociation, producing a new and fast proton-conducting layer through the formation of Tz-TiO2 interaction. Applying CHS·Tz-TiO2 to high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells results in improved membrane conductivity and power-generation properties at 150 °C under anhydrous conditions.

Proton-Conducting Polymer-Coated Carbon Nanofiber Mats for Pt-Anodes of High-Temperature Polymer-Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell. MEMBRANES 2023; 13:membranes13050479. Abstract
High-temperature polymer-electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEM FC) are a very important type of fuel cell since they operate at 150-200 °C, allowing the use of hydrogen contaminated with CO. However, the need to improve stability and other properties of gas diffusion electrodes still hinders their distribution. Anodes based on a mat (self-supporting entire non-woven nanofiber material) of carbon nanofibers (CNF) were prepared by the electrospinning method from a polyacrylonitrile solution followed by thermal stabilization and pyrolysis of the mat. To improve their proton conductivity, Zr salt was introduced into the electrospinning solution. As a result, after subsequent deposition of Pt-nanoparticles, Zr-containing composite anodes were obtained. To improve the proton conductivity of the nanofiber surface of the composite anode and reach HT-PEMFC better performance, dilute solutions of Nafion®, a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) and N-ethyl phosphonated polybenzimidazole (PBI-OPhT-P) were used to coat the CNF surface for the first time. These anodes were studied by electron microscopy and tested in membrane-electrode assembly for H2/air HT-PEMFC. The use of CNF anodes coated with PBI-OPhT-P has been shown to improve the HT-PEMFC performance.
