Novel ecofriendly cation exchange membranes for low-cost electrodialysis of brackish water: Desalination and antiscaling performance

Spontaneous thermal energy transfer and anti-gravitational water pumping using Al2O3 fiber-enhanced flexible nonwoven material as a high-performance and self-floating solar evaporator

Solar-driven evaporation is promising to address water scarcity. However, preserving the heat inside evaporators instead of allowing run-off, and synergistically utilizing it to wick water from the bulk, is still underexplored. Herein, a dual-functional bridge of longitudinal orientated channels of Al2O3 fibers (AOFs) embedded in a multi-layered nonwoven evaporator was proposed to create a buffer for spontaneous thermal conduction and anti-gravitational water pumping. As a self-floating system with high porosity and flexibility, benefiting from the strong water transporting ability and high thermal conductivity of the AOFs, a superhigh evaporation rate (2.79 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun) can be achieved with great stability and durability. This work highlights the potential of promoting thermal management using a large-scale vapour chamber and mass-producible nonwoven technology to prepare a high-performance evaporator for practical applications.

Biochar-Based Photothermal Hydrogel for Efficient Solar Water Purification

The development of technology for solar interface evaporation has a significant meaning for the sustainable use of water resources in remote regions. However, establishing a solar evaporator with a high evaporation rate and favorable water treatment capabilities remains challenging. In this work, we reported a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)@carbonized cattail (CC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogel (ACPH) membrane. Because of the successfully loaded AgNPs, which have a photothermal synergy with the CC, the ACPH-10 membrane obtained an excellent photothermal conversion performance. Additionally, the hydrophilicity of the ACPH-10 membrane ensures a sustainable water supply which is necessary for the improvement of the evaporation rate. Therefore, the ACPH-10 membrane achieves an evaporation rate of 1.66 kg m^-2 h^-1 and an efficiency of 88.0%, attributed to the remarkable photothermal conversion and water transmission. More importantly, the membrane exhibits superior purification ability in a variety of sewage. Pollutant removal rates in heavy metal and organic dye sewage have exceeded 99.8%. As a result, the ACPH membrane holds great promise for wastewater recovery and seawater desalination, which can aid in resolving the water crisis issue.

Fabrication of trimethylphosphine-functionalized anion exchange membranes for desalination application via electrodialysis process

The design of conductive, improved durable and selective anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for desalination application via electrodialysis (ED) process is critical for a more sustainable future. This work reports the design of a series of homogeneous trimethylphosphine (TMP)-functionalized anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for desalination application via electrodialysis (ED) process. Physico-chemical characterization and electrochemical performance of the trimethylphosphine-functionalized anion exchange membranes was conducted and the activity found to be tuned by varying the quantity of trimethylphosphine into the membrane architecture. For anion exchange membranes M1 to M4, the ion exchange capacity (IEC) was increased from 1.35 to 2.16 mmol/g, water uptake (W_R) from 4.30 to 17.72%, linear expansion ratio (LER) from 3.70 to 12.50% with enhancing the quantity of trimethylphosphine into the polymer architecture. The ionic resistance decreased from 15.14 to 2.61 Ω cm² with increasing quantities of trimethylphosphine whereas transport number increased from 0.98 to 0.99. The performance of synthesized trimethylphosphine-functionalized anion exchange membranes in desalination of NaCl was evaluated via electrodialysis process (flux of 3.42 mol/m². h and current efficiency of 64.30%). Results showed that the prepared trimethylphosphine-functionalized membrane (optimum M4) possess improved desalination performance as compared to commercial membrane Neosepta AMX under identical experimental conditions.

Effect of Pulsed Electric Field on the Electrodialysis Performance of Phosphate-Containing Solutions

A comparative analysis of mass transfer characteristics and energy consumption was carried out for the electrodialysis recovery of P^V from of NaH₂PO₄ solutions and multicomponent (0.045 M Na_xH_(3-x)PO₄, 0.02 M KCl, 0.045 M KOH, 0.028 M CaCl₂, and 0.012 M MgCl₂, pH 6.0 ± 0.1) solution in conventional continuous current (CC) and pulsed electric field (PEF) modes. The advantages of using PEF in comparison with CC mode are shown to increase the current efficiency and reduce energy consumption, as well as reduce scaling on heterogeneous anion-exchange membranes. It has been shown that PEF contributes to the suppression of the "acid dissociation" phenomenon, which is specific for anion-exchange membranes in phosphate-containing solutions. Pulse and pause lapse 0.1 s-0.1 s and duty cycle 1/2 were found to be optimal among the studied PEF parameters.
