Advances on Hormones and Steroids Determination: A Review of Voltammetric Methods since 2000

This article presents advances in the electrochemical determination of hormones and steroids since 2000. A wide spectrum of techniques and working electrodes have been involved in the reported measurements in order to obtain the lowest possible limits of detection. The voltammetric and polarographic techniques, due to their sensitivity and easiness, could be used as alternatives to other, more complicated, analytical assays. Still, growing interest in designing a new construction of the working electrodes enables us to prepare new measurement procedures and obtain lower limits of detection. A brief description of the measured compounds has been presented, along with a comparison of the obtained results.

Delphinidin immobilized on silver nanoparticles for the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid, noradrenalin, uric acid, and tryptophan

In the present study, the fabrication of a new modified electrode for electrocatalytic oxidation of noradrenalin, based on the delphinidin immobilized on silver nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode. Cyclic voltammetry was used to investigate the redox properties of this modified electrode. The surface charge transfer rate constant (k_s) and the charge transfer coefficient (α) for the electron transfer between the glassy carbon electrode and the immobilized delphinidin were calculated. The differential pulse voltammetry exhibited two linear dynamic ranges and a detection limit of 0.40μM for noradrenalin determination. Moreover, the present electrode could separate the oxidation peak potentials of ascorbic acid, noradrenalin, uric acid, and tryptophan in a mixture. The usefulness of this nanosensor was also investigated for the determination of ascorbic acid, noradrenalin, and uric acid in pharmaceutical and biological fluid samples with satisfactory results.

Synergetic catalysis based on the proline tailed metalloporphyrin with graphene sheet as efficient mimetic enzyme for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of dopamine

In this paper, linking with the butoxycarbonyl (BOC) protection of proline, a new tailed metalloporphyrin with many useful active functions, nickel (II) 5-[4-N-(tert-Butoxycarbonyl)-l-prolinecoxylpropyloxy]phenyl-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (NiTBLPyP), was designed and synthesized. And the NiTBLPyP polymer (poly(NiTBLPyP)) was successfully obtained via a low-cost electrochemical method and exploited as an efficient mimic enzyme. Subsequently, a noncovalent nanohybrid of poly(NiTBLPyP) with graphene (rGO) sheet (rGO-poly(NiTBLPyP)) was prepared through π-π stacking interaction for the ultrasensitive and selective detection of DA. The nanohybrid was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Due to the excellent electrocatalytic ability of poly(NiTBLPyP) film and aromatic π-π stacking interaction between poly(NiTBLPyP and rGO sheet, the obtained rGO-poly(NiTBLPyP) film exhibited a great synergistic amplification effect toward dopamine oxidation. Under optimum experimental conditions, the logarithm of catalytic currents showed a good linear relationship with that of the dopamine concentration in the range of 0.01-200 μM with a low detection limit of 1.40 nM. With good sensitivity and selectivity, the present method was applied to the determination of DA in real sample and the results was satisfactory. Thus, the rGO-poly(NiTBLPyP) film is one of the promising mimetic enzyme for electrocatalysis and relevant fields.

Simultaneous determination of norepinephrine, acetaminophen and tyrosine by differential pulse voltammetry using Au-nanoparticles/poly(2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol) film modified glassy carbon electrode

A novel Au-nanoparticles/poly-(2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3-diol) film modified glassy carbon electrode (AuNPs/poly(trisamine)/GCE) was constructed for the simultaneous determination of norepinephrine (NE), acetaminophen (AC) and L-tyrosine (Tyr) by differential pulse voltammetry. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicate that the trisamine film was successfully polymerized on the surface of GCE and the film efficiently decreased the charge transfer resistance value of electrode and improved the electron transfer kinetic between analytes and electrode. The separation of the oxidation peak potentials for NE-AC and AC-Tyr were about 160 mV and 240 mV, respectively. The calibration curves for NE, AC and Tyr were obtained in the range of 1.3-230.1 μmol L(-1), 1.90-188.0 μmol L(-1), and 3.9-61.8 μmol L(-1), respectively. The detection limits (S/N=3) were 0.07 μmol L(-1), 0.1 μmol L(-1) and 0.9 μmol L(-1), for NE, AC and Tyr, respectively. The diffusion coefficient and the catalytic rate constant for the oxidation reaction of NE at AuNPs/poly(trisamine)/GCE were calculated as 1.55 (±0.2)×10(-6) cm2 s(-1) and 2.28 (±0.17)×10(3) mol(-1) L s(-1), respectively. Finally, AuNPs/poly(trisamine)/GCE was satisfactorily used for the determination of NE, AC, and Tyr in pharmaceutical and biological samples.

This review focuses on the chemosensors for neurotransmitters published for the last 12 years, covering biogenic amines (dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, histamine and acetylcholine), amino acids (glutamate, aspartate, GABA, glycine and tyrosine), and adenosine.

Simultaneous voltammetric determination of norepinephrine, ascorbic acid and uric acid on polycalconcarboxylic acid modified glassy carbon electrode

A novel polycalconcarboxylic acid (CCA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated by electropolymerization and then successfully used to simultaneously determine ascorbic acid (AA), norepinephrine (NE) and uric acid (UA). The characterization of electrochemically synthesized Poly-CCA film was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and voltammetric methods. It was found that the electrochemical behavior of the polymer-modified electrode depended on film thickness, i.e., the electropylmyerization time. Based on the electrochemical data, the charge transfer coefficient (alpha) and the surface coverage (Gamma) were calculated. This poly-CCA modified GCE could reduce the overpotential of ascorbic acid (AA), norepinephrine (NE) and uric acid (UA) oxidation in phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.0), while it increases the peak current significantly. The current peak separations of AA/NE, NE/UA and AA/UA on this modified electrode are 91mV, 256mV and 390mV in CV at 100mVs(-1), respectively. Therefore, the voltammetric responses of these three compounds can be well resolved on the polymer-modified electrode, and simultaneously determination of these three compounds can be achieved. In addition, this modified electrode can be successfully applied to determine AA and NE in injection and UA in urine samples without interferences.

Theoretical study on the electrochemical behavior of norepinephrine at Nafion multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified pyrolytic graphite electrode

DFT-B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) and HF/6-31G (d, p) calculations are performed for deoxidized norepinephrineat (NP(R)) and its oxidized form (NP(O)). The electrochemistry of norepinephrineat (NP) was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at a pyrolytic graphite electrode modified by Nafion multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in phosphate buffers at pH 6.0, showing that the standard electrode potential of half reaction for NP(O), H+/NP(R) is 0.75l V. This experimental standard electrode potential of half reaction is consistent with that calculated using the energies of solvation and sum of electronic and thermal free energies of NP(R) and NP(O). The frontier orbital theory and Mülliken charges of molecular explain the electrochemical behavior of CV at modified electrode well. The singlet vertical excited states for NP(R) and NP(O) are also discussed.

Spectrofluorimetric Estimation of Norepinephrine Using Ethylenediamine Condensation Method

A simple and sensitive method for the determination of norepinephrine is described. Norepinephrine (NE) was oxidized by mercury (II) nitrate and the oxidation product was condensed with ethylenediamine (EDA) to form a strong fluorescent compound. The addition of acetone enhances the light intensity. The measurement was carried out at 507 nm with excitation at 420 nm. A linear relationship was obtained between the fluorescence intensity and norepinephrine concentration in the range of 0.01 microM-0.014 mM; the correlation coefficient and the detection limit are 0.99813 and 2.5 nM, respectively. The interference from dopamine (DA) can be eliminated by first derivative synchronous fluorimetric method using peak to zero technique. The recovery efficiency was performed using known amounts of norepinephrine in urine sample and the results indicate a 95-98.62% recovery. The proposed method was also applied to the determination of norepinephrine in injections solution. The reaction mechanism was also described.

The nano-Au self-assembled glassy carbon electrode for selective determination of epinephrine in the presence of ascorbic acid

Gold nanoparticles were self-assembled to the modified glassy carbon electrode (GC) with cysteamine (CA) to prepare the nano-Au/CA/GC modified electrode. The electrochemical behavior of epinephrine (EP) on the modified electrode was explored with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Epinephrine gave a pair of redox peaks at E(pa)=0.190 mV and E(pc)=-0.224 mV (versus SCE), respectively. The nano-Au/CA/GC modified electrode shows an excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of EP. The modified electrode could be used to determine EP in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA). The response of catalytic current with EP concentration shows a linear relation in the range of 1.0 x 10(-7) to 5.0 x 10(-4) mol L(-1) with the correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is 4.0 x 10(-8) mol L(-1). The modified electrode exhibited a good reproducibility, sensitivity and stability for the determination of EP injection.

Electrocatalytic Response and Determination of Noradrenaline in the Presence of L-Ascorbic and Uric Acids with Poly(Eriochrome Black T)-Modified Electrode

A poly(Eriochrome Black T) chemically modified glassy carbon electrode modified with Eriochrome Black T was prepared by cyclic voltammetry. The modified electrode showed an excellent electrocatalytic activity in oxidation of noradrenaline (NA) and could separate its electrochemical responses from those of L-ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Differences of the oxidation peak potentials for NA-AA and UA-NA were about 150 mV. The responses to NA, AA and UA of the modified electrode are relatively independent. Using differential pulse voltammetry, the peak currents of NA at modified glassy carbon electrode increased linearly with the concentration of NA from 0.5 to 100 μmol l-1. The detection limit was 0.2 μmol l-1. With the modified electrode, UA could be selectively determined in the presence of AA. The method showing a wide linear dynamic range and excellent sensitivity was successfully applied to the determination of NA in pharmaceutical injections and various samples.
