Abstract
AbstractA sensitive, simple and selective voltammetric method was developed for the quantification of plant‐derived podophyllotoxin, which is included in antineoplastic drugs, using a disposable pencil graphite electrode. Using the square‐wave voltammetry technique, podophyllotoxin gave a very good voltammetric response at +1.24 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) potential (at 0.0 V and after 60 s pre‐concentration) in Britton Robinson (pH 4.0) media. This procedure was used to detection the compound in the concentration range of 12.4–299.5 nM with a limit of detection to 2.62 nM (1.08 μg L−1). The proposed method has been successfully applied to human urine samples.

Abstract
Increased activation and proliferation of T lymphocytes plays an essential role in the development of chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Currently used immunosuppressive drugs often do not provide long-lasting relief of symptoms and show a gradual loss of efficacy over time, and are accompanied by various side effects. Therefore, novel immunosuppressive lead substances are needed. For this purpose, an in-house library consisting of 600 extracts of plants from Panama was screened for inhibition of human T lymphocyte proliferation. As one of the hits, an ethyl acetate extract from the aerial parts of Hyptis brachiata (Lamiaceae) exhibited strong inhibitory effects. Subsequent investigation resulted in the isolation of seven aryltetralin lignans, five arylnaphthalene lignans, two flavonoids, three triterpenes, and cinnamyl cinnamate. Aryltetralin lignans inhibited T lymphocyte proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner without induction of apoptosis. No relevant inhibition was observed for the arylnaphthalene lignans, flavonoids, and triterpenes. Additional cell cycle arrest investigations revealed that isolated aryltetralin lignans potently inhibited cell division in G2/M phase similarly to podophyllotoxin. Multifluorescence panel analyses of the extract also showed weak suppressive effects on the production of IL-2 and TNF-α. Therefore, preparations made out of H. brachiata could be further explored as an interesting herbal alternative in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

Abstract
Lignan is a class of diphenolic compounds that arise from the condensation of two phenylpropanoid moieties. Oilseed and cereal crops (e.g., flaxseed, sesame seed, wheat, barley, oats, rye, etc.) are major sources of plant lignan. Methods for commercial isolation of the lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) are not well reported, as most publications describing the detection, extraction, and enrichment of SDG use methods that have not been optimized for commercial scale lignan recovery. Simply scaling up laboratory methods would require expensive infrastructure to achieve a marketable yield and reproducible product quality. Therefore, establishing standard protocols to produce SDG and its derivatives on an industrial scale is critical to decrease lignan cost and increase market opportunities. This review summarizes the human health benefits of flaxseed lignan consumption, lignan physicochemical properties, and mammalian lignan metabolism, and describes methods for detecting, extracting, and enriching flaxseed lignan. Refining and optimization of these methods could lead to the development of inexpensive lignan sources for application as an ingredient in medicines, dietary supplements, and other healthy ingredients.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The subtribe Hyptidinae contains approximately 400 accepted species distributed in 19 genera (Hyptis, Eriope, Condea, Cantinoa, Mesosphaerum, Cyanocephalus, Hypenia, Hyptidendron, Oocephalus, Medusantha, Gymneia, Marsypianthes, Leptohyptis, Martianthus, Asterohyptis, Eplingiella, Physominthe, Eriopidion and Rhaphiodon). This is the Lamiaceae clade with the largest number of species in Brazil and high rates of endemism. Some species have been used in different parts of the world mainly as insecticides/pest repellents, wound healing and pain-relief agents, as well as for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders. AIM OF THE REVIEW This review aims to discuss the current status concerning the taxonomy, ethnobotanical uses, phytochemistry and biological properties of species which compose the subtribe Hyptidinae. MATERIALS AND METHODS The available information was collected from scientific databases (ScienceDirect, Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, ChemSpider, SciFinder ACS Publications, Wiley Online Library), as well as other literature sources (e.g. books, theses). RESULTS The phytochemical investigations of plants of this subtribe have led to the identification of almost 300 chemical constituents of different classes such as diterpenes, triterpenes, lignans, α-pyrones, flavonoids, phenolic acids and monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, as components of essential oils. Extracts, essential oils and isolated compounds showed a series of biological activities such as insecticide/repellent, antimicrobial and antinociceptive, justifying some of the popular uses of the plants. In addition, a very relevant fact is that several species produce podophyllotoxin and related lignans. CONCLUSION Several species of Hyptidinae are used in folk medicine for treating many diseases but only a small fraction of the species has been explored and most of the traditional uses have not been validated by current investigations. In addition, the species of the subtribe appear to be very promising as alternative sources of podophyllotoxin-like lignans which are the lead compounds for the semi-synthesis of teniposide and etoposide, important antineoplastic agents. Thus, there is a wide-open door for future studies, both to support the popular uses of the plants and to find new biologically active compounds in this large number of species not yet explored.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hyptis verticillata Jacq. (Lamiaceae) is a Mexican medicinal plant for the treatment of skin infections and illness affecting the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. OBJECTIVE To associate the efficient resolution provided by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography combined to the accuracy of a hybrid Fourier-transform (FT) mass spectrometer in order to dereplicate podophyllotoxin-type lignans in a plant extract. METHODS An ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array-high resolution electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-PDA-HRESI-MS/MS) method was applied in an Orbitrap hybrid FT spectrometer for dereplication of podophyllotoxin and related cytotoxic lignans in wild bushmint. This procedure included high-resolution mass values for positively charged ions [M + H]+ and [M + NH4 ]+ , MS/MS data, and comparison of UV maxima and retention times with pure compounds. RESULTS Podophyllotoxin in addition to seven aryltetralins, four arylnaphthalenes, and one dibenzylbutyrolactone were dereplicated from the methanol extract in a short-time analysis (5 min). 4'-O-Demethyl-dehydro-deoxypodophyllotoxin was identified as a new natural product. CONCLUSION The applied UHPLC-MS/MS dereplication method is suitable for a rapid analysis of podophyllotoxin-type lignans and the resulting chemical fingerprinting could be valuable in quality control of herbal drugs and their phytopharmaceuticals.

Abstract
The prevalence of allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergy and atopic dermatitis has increased dramatically in recent decades. Conventional therapies for allergy can induce undesirable effects and hence patients tend to seek alternative therapies like natural compounds. Considering the fact above, there is an urgency to discover potential medicinal plants as future candidates in the development of novel anti-allergic therapeutic agents. The Lamiaceae family, or mint family, is a diverse plant family which encompasses more than 7,000 species and with a cosmopolitan distribution. A number of species from this family has been widely employed as ethnomedicine against allergic inflammatory skin diseases and allergic asthma in traditional practices. Phytochemical analysis of the Lamiaceae family has reported the presence of flavonoids, flavones, flavanones, flavonoid glycosides, monoterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenoids, essential oil and fatty acids. Numerous investigations have highlighted the anti-allergic activities of Lamiaceae species with their active principles and crude extracts. Henceforth, this review has the ultimate aim of compiling the up-to-date (2018) findings of published scientific information about the anti-allergic activities of Lamiaceae species. In addition, the botanical features, medicinal uses, chemical constituents and toxicological studies of Lamiaceae species were also documented. The method employed for data collection in this review was mainly the exploration of the PubMed, Ovid and Scopus databases. Additional research studies were obtained from the reference lists of retrieved articles. This comprehensive summarization serves as a useful resource for a better understanding of Lamiaceae species. The anti-allergic mechanisms related to Lamiaceae species are also reviewed extensively which aids in future exploration of the anti-allergic potential of Lamiaceae species.
