Rapid and accurate determination of gold in geological materials by an improved ICP-MS method

A new desorption method of polyurethane foam for the determination of gold and a comparative study on four desorption methods based on meta-analysis

Accurate determination of gold in geological samples is an important prerequisite and guarantee for studying geological problems. There are many methods for digestion and enrichment of gold among which polyurethane foam (PUF) enrichment after aqua regia digestion is the most commonly used in the experiments. A new method to help the relief of gold from the PUF was put forward in this study, and it was applied to four certified reference materials (CRMs) together with three previously used methods, and the optimal extraction and enrichment conditions were determined through experiments. The four methods were compared by meta-analysis, and the thiourea liberation method was superior to the other three methods because of its simple operation and high accuracy. Out of consideration for the incomplete adsorption of gold in the solution by only one piece of PUF, repetitive adsorption of gold with a second and a third piece of PUF in the solution was proposed in this study. Results show that the gold content obtained by secondary and tertiary adsorption accounts for 11.03% of the total content, and the highest can reach 20.74%. When the third adsorption was carried out, the gold content in several samples was below the detection limit. Therefore, repeated adsorption of gold in the solution is necessary, and three times of adsorption is necessary.

Gold determination in soil by ICP-MS: comparison of sample pretreatment methods

At present, the direct gold determination in geological samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is still an arduous challenge due to both spectral and background interferences. It is very important and necessary to study the pretreatment processes; therefore, the polyurethane foam treatment and sample digestion methods are explored and compared here. The experimental results showed that the gold adsorption rate of treated foam was significantly improved as the impurities in the foam were cleaned up, and the potential difference of the liquid membrane was increased. Meanwhile, the combination of the foam enrichment and thiourea desorption achieved the selective adsorption and desorption of gold ions, eliminated the interference of coexisting ions, and perfected the detection limits. Compared with the traditional electric heating plate digestion method, microwave digestion, a closed digestion method, had the advantages of less sample and reagent dosage, short time consumption, high degree of automation, thorough digestion, good security, and environmental friendliness and met the requirements of green chemistry development. The proposed microwave digestion-foam enrichment-thiourea desorption-ICP-MS determination method was applied to the gold test in soil samples of the actual gold mining area. It has the great potential as a routine laboratory procedure.

Development of a selective and sensitive colour reagent for gold and silver ions and its application to desktop scanner analysis

Desktop scanners can be favorable alternatives to sophisticated spectrophotometers for the assessment of analytes in complex real samples. Distinctively, our method has been thoroughly investigated, optimized, validated and successfully applied to the assessment of silver and gold in complex real samples, applying syringal rhodanine (SR) as a novel specifically tailored chromogenic reagent and using a desktop scanner as a versatile sensor. Maximum colour absorbance was obtained in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) for silver and gold chelates, respectively. For each metal ion, two ternary complexes were formed depending on the SR concentration with stoichiometries of 1 : 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 : 3 (Ag-SR-CPC) and 1 : 2 : 3 and 1 : 3 : 4 (Au-SR-CTAC), respectively. The methods adhered to Beer's law for 0.15-2.5 and 0.15-2.25 μg mL-1 with detection limits of 0.0089 and 0.0163 μg mL-1 for silver and gold, respectively. The molar absorptivities were 3.63 × 104 and 6.15 × 104 L mol-1 cm-1 at 550 nm and 554 nm, with Sandell's sensitivity indexes of 0.0029 and 0.0032 μg cm-2, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the assessment of silver and gold in a wide range of complex environmental samples.

Comparative Study on Two Pretreatment Processes for Chemical Phase Analysis of Gold in Geological Samples by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Sample pretreatment is important for chemical phase analysis of elements. In this study, the geological samples of the Laozuoshan gold mine are chosen to pretreat by ultrasonic centrifugation and cyclotron oscillation, and the content of gold in eight chemical phases (water-soluble, ion exchange and clay adsorption, organic matter bound, iron-manganese oxide bound, naked or seminaked, carbonate bound, sulfide bound, and insoluble silicate states) is determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The results show that the gold content of water-soluble, ion exchange and clay adsorption, iron-manganese oxide, and naked or seminaked states in the rock and ore samples is low, and some samples have high gold content of insoluble silicate states in the two methods. However, the gold content of organic matter bound, carbonate bound, and sulfide bound states obtained by ultrasonic centrifugation and cyclotron oscillation methods is significantly different. According to the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry data and the actual geological condition, the result given by the cyclotron oscillation method is more reasonable. The gold content of sulfide bound state in sediment samples is the highest and consistent with the mineral information, which could be applied to preliminarily predict the rock and ore conditions in the corresponding mining areas. In contrast with ultrasonic centrifugation, the cyclotron oscillation method has the advantages of simplicity, high efficiency, practicality, and environmental protection, and it can be better used for the determination of gold chemical phase state in geological samples by atomic absorption spectrometry.
