Study on dispersibility of thermally stable carbon black particles in ink using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF)

A Study on Aqueous Dispersing of Carbon Black Nanoparticles Surface-Coated with Styrene Maleic Acid (SMA) Copolymer

Carbon black (CB) particles tend to aggregate in aqueous solutions, and finding an optimum dispersing condition (e.g., selection of the type of dispersant) is one of the important tasks in related industries. In the present study, three types of styrene maleic acid (SMA) copolymer dispersants were synthesized, labeled respectively 'SMA-1000', 'SMA-2000', and 'SMA-3000', which have 1, 2, and 3 styrene groups in their repeating units. Then, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) was employed to measure the particle size distributions of the aqueous CB dispersions. For the particle size analysis of the CB dispersions, dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed relatively lower reproducibility than AsFlFFF. AsFlFFF showed that the use of SMA-3000 yielded a CB dispersion with the most uniform particle size distribution. When the SMA-3000 dispersant was used, the particle size tended to increase after 1 h of milling as the milling time increased, probably due to the re-agglomeration of the particles by excessive milling. The particle size distributions from AsFlFFF were consistent with the colorimetric observations. With the SMA-3000 dispersant, the lowest L∗ value was observed after 1 h of milling. The AsFlFFF and colorimetric analyses suggest that a stable CB dispersion can be obtained by either 3-h of milling with the SMA-2000 or 1-h of milling with the SMA-3000.

Characterization and Quantitation of Carbon Black Nanomaterials in Polymeric and Biological Aqueous Dispersants by Asymmetrical Flow Field Flow Fractionation

Characterization of carbon black (CB) nanomaterials is required in industrial and research areas. Hence, in this study, asymmetrical flow field flow fractionation coupled to UV-vis and DLS detectors in series (AF4-UV-vis-DLS) was studied to evaluate the CB dispersion behavior in polymeric and biological dispersants, given the relevance of these media in practical applications. Under the experimental conditions, the results indicated that polymeric and biological dispersions showed size distributions with hydrodynamic diameters of 404 and 175 nm, respectively, for a particle core diameter of 40 nm. The polymeric dispersant provided lower stability as a function of time than that achieved by the biological dispersant. AF4 allowed separation of different core-sized CB (40, 69, and 72 nm) according to their hydrodynamic size using cross-flow rates of 0.5 mL·min^-1 and 1 mL·min^-1 for polymeric and biological dispersants, respectively. The dilution of the polymeric dispersion with different real water matrices produced a dramatic loss of dispersion stability, this effect being negligible in the case of biological dispersions.

New Advances and Applications in Field-Flow Fractionation

Field-flow fractionation (FFF) is a family of techniques that was created especially for separating and characterizing macromolecules, nanoparticles, and micrometer-sized analytes. It is coming of age as new nanomaterials, polymers, composites, and biohybrids with remarkable properties are introduced and new analytical challenges arise due to synthesis heterogeneities and the motivation to correlate analyte properties with observed performance. Appreciation of the complexity of biological, pharmaceutical, and food systems and the need to monitor multiple components across many size scales have also contributed to FFF's growth. This review highlights recent advances in FFF capabilities, instrumentation, and applications that feature the unique characteristics of different FFF techniques in determining a variety of information, such as averages and distributions in size, composition, shape, architecture, and microstructure and in investigating transformations and function.

Effect of Different Color Paste on Properties of Fluorine Resin/Aluminum Infrared Low Emissivity Coating

The effect of the four kinds of red, dark yellow, purple, and black pastes on the properties of fluorine resin/aluminum low emissivity coating was studied. The infrared emissivity coatings with red and black pastes were higher than the coatings with dark yellow and purple pastes. The hardness of the coatings with red, dark yellow, and purple color pastes was 6H, and that with black pastes was 6B. The adhesion and impact resistance of dark yellow coating was better, followed by red and purple, and the adhesion and impact resistance of black coating was the worst. Electrochemical polarization curves indicated that fluorine resin coatings with purple paste had better corrosion resistance. After the salt water resistance test, there was no obvious loss of light in the coatings with the four kinds of color pastes. The purple paste coating had no obvious loss of light and less bubble, suggesting that the fluorine resin/aluminum low emissivity coating with purple paste had better performance. The results of this study provide a new prospect for the application of infrared low emissivity coating in infrared stealth and compatibility with visible light.
