Elemental analysis for iron, cobalt, copper and zinc decorated hydroxyapatite synthetic bone dusts by EDXRF and SEM

The effect of metal rate on the gamma shielding parameters of hydroxyapatite at medical treatment energies

The hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a kind of biomaterial which is used for bone treatment applications. We have scrutinized the gamma attenuation parameters such as such as the effective atomic number (Zeff), electron density (Nel), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL) and mean free path (MFP) for only single liquid gamma source and a narrow beam geometry for the energy (medical treatment energy) ranging from 778 keV to 1408 keV (Eu-152) for the animal bone, iron, cobalt, copper, and zinc decorated Nano hydroxyapatite (nFeHAp, nCoHAp, nCuHAp, and nZnHAp) artificial bone powders. The gamma-rays were counted with using Ultra Low Energy Germanium detection system with a resolution 150 eV at 5,95 keV and a high purity germanium detector with a resolution of 1.85 keV at 1.33 MeV experimentally. The gamma ray attenuation parameters are calculated for the metal doped hydroxyapatite and compare with the animal bone. The results were compared with the output XCOM NIST data. While the mass absorption coefficient values for animal bone range from 0.08 to 0.05 at current energy levels, the values for metal-added artificial bone powders range from 0.07 to 0.05. While the linear absorption coefficient values for existing energy values for animal bone range from 0.04 to 0.02, they range from 0.03 to 0.02 for metal-added artificial bone powders. Mean free path values for real bone range from 24 to 36 at current energies, while half value layer values range from 16 to 25 and tenth value layer values range from 56 to 83. For metal-doped artificial bone powders, these parameters range from 26 to 35, 18 to 24, and 61 to 80, respectively. The results points that, the data of the gamma ray attenuation parameters are very close to the value of the animal bone due to the removal of calcium atoms from the structure when metal is added.

Biomimetic chitosan against bioinspired nanohydroxyapatite for repairing enamel surfaces

In this study, chitosan was employed as a novel biomimetic mineralization model to repair damaged enamel to compare its performance with that of bioinspired zinc-doped nanohydroxyapatite. Fifty human premolar tooth slices were prepared, and artificial caries lesions were induced to produce demineralized enamel surfaces. The etched slices were randomly divided into two groups: a chitosan-hydrogel-treated group and a zinc-doped nanohydroxyapatite-treated group. In vitro assessment using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy was conducted at the baseline, demineralization and remineralization stages. Baseline results were matched with those for normal enamel; a marked reduction in the calcium (Ca)/phosphorus (P) ratio to 1·12 and the lack of the characteristic hydroxyapatite diffraction peaks were detected for demineralized enamel. The remineralization stage revealed evident recovery of the mineral contents (the calcium/phosphorus ratio was 1·61 for the chitosan-treated group and 1·58 for the bioinspired-nanohydroxyapatite-treated one), with apparent distinctive X-ray diffraction patterns of hydroxyapatite in both groups. Scanning electron microscopic analysis showed the absence of etched enamel porosity, with the formation of a newly formed rod-like apatite layer, similar to natural enamel, which extended over the treated enamel surfaces of both groups. Chitosan hydrogel is recommended as a biomimetic mineralization smart system for repairing demineralized carious enamel.

Synthesis, physical characterization, and antifungal and antibacterial activities of oleic acid capped nanomagnetite and cobalt-doped nanomagnetite

Nanoparticles, 10–14 nm, consisting of either Fe3O4 or Co0.2Fe2.8O4 stabilized with oleic acid, were prepared using solution combustion. Their structural and magnetic properties were examined using X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The properties of both sets of materials are similar, except that the cobalt-doped particles are considerably less magnetic. The in vitro inhibitory activities of the nanoparticles were assessed against pathogenic bacteria Shigella dysenteriae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Streptococcus pyogenes, and pathogenic fungi and molds Candida albicans, Fusarium oxysporum, and Aspergillus fumigatus. The magnetite nanoparticles were moderately effective against all tested pathogens, but the activity of the cobalt-doped nanoparticles was significantly lower, possibly due to an interruption of the Fenton reaction at the bacterial membrane. This work suggests that potentially doping magnetite with stronger metal oxidants may instead enhance their antimicrobial effects.

Electrochemical behavior of CoCrMo alloy for dental applications in acidic artificial saliva containing albumin

The electrochemical properties of CoCrMo alloy immersed in different artificial saliva with or without Ca²⁺ and albumin were studied by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PP), and meanwhile the microstructures features, phase identification and chemical composition of the alloy were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD and RA-IR to further understand the electrochemical behavior of the alloy. The results indicated that the self-passivation behavior of the alloy occurred universally and was obviously distinct with each other in different acidic artificial saliva. No phase transformation was observed and the oxide layer and corrosion products exhibited amorphous nature. There was an obvious complexation of the adsorbed albumin with the alloy, and the adsorption capacity of albumin increased with the prolongation of immersion time. The adsorbed albumin presenting black stripped spots had a certain inhibition to the formation of passivation film, and Ca²⁺ in saliva promoted the further adsorption of albumin as an intermediate bridge, going against the improvement of the corrosion resistance of passivation film/alloy system. In addition, the passivation state of the alloy surface was changed by different methods to investigate the adsorption behavior of albumin and its influence on the further passivation behavior in depth. Hitherto, we tried to propose a model to explain the dynamic adsorption process of albumin and its influencing mechanism on the growth behavior of passivation film.
