Assessment of the influence of counter ions on biosorption of copper cations in brewer's spent grain - Waste product generated during beer brewing process

The significance of heterophasic ion exchange in active biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution of surface waters

We have carried out studies to examine the possibility of using biosorbents: the epigeic mosses Pleurozium schreberi (Willd. ex Brid.) Mitt., and the epiphytic lichens Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. in active biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution of surface waters. The dried sea algae Palmaria palmata (L.) Weber & Mohr were used as the third biosorbent. The studies were conducted in the waters of the Turawa Reservoir, a dam reservoir with a significant level of eutrophication in south-western Poland. Incremental concentrations of Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb were determined in the exposed samples. It was shown that a 2-h exposure period increases the concentration of some metals in the exposed samples, even by as much as several hundred percent. High increments of nickel concentrations in the algae Palmaria palmata (mean: 0.0040 mg/g, with the initial concentration of c0 < 0.0016 in the algae) were noted, with negligible increments in concentrations of this metal in mosses and lichens. In contrast, mosses and lichens accumulated relatively high amounts of Cd (mean: 0.0033 mg/g, c0 = 0.00043 mg/g) and Pb (mean: 0.0243 mg/g, c0 = 0.0103 mg/g), respectively.

Sustainable Re-Use of Brewer's Spent Grain for the Production of High Protein and Fibre Pasta

Brewer’s spent grains are one of the principal by-products of the brewing industry. For protein and fibre content, this by-product represents an interesting raw material to be reused for manufacturing many other products. To maximize the nutritional characteristics of this by-product, in this study, ingredients derived from brewer’s spent grains were included in the design of innovative dry pasta. Two brewer’s spent grains derivative ingredients, one enriched in proteins and the other in fibre were blended with semolina. Based on the rheological evaluation, the optimal amount of the two ingredients for producing pasta was determined. In particular, pasta responding to the claims “High Protein” and “High Fibre” was realized using the formulation enriched with 15% of protein-rich ingredient and the claim “High Fibre” and “Source of proteins” using the formulation enriched with 10% of fibre-rich ingredient. The final products were compared to 100% semolina and 100% wholegrain semolina pasta for composition, color, texture, and cooking quality, revealing excellent quality characteristics. The newly formulated pasta represents a successful match of technological aptitude, nutritional/sensorial quality, and sustainability.

Brewer's Spent Grains-Valuable Beer Industry By-Product

The brewing sector is a significant part of the global food industry. Breweries produce large quantities of wastes, including wastewater and brewer’s spent grains. Currently, upcycling of food industry by-products is one of the principles of the circular economy. The aim of this review is to present possible ways to utilize common solid by-product from the brewing sector. Brewer’s spent grains (BSG) is a good material for sorption and processing into activated carbon. Another way to utilize spent grains is to use them as a fuel in raw form, after hydrothermal carbonization or as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion. The mentioned by-products may also be utilized in animal and human nutrition. Moreover, BSG is a waste rich in various substances that may be extracted for further utilization. It is likely that, in upcoming years, brewer’s spent grains will not be considered as a by-product, but as a desirable raw material for various branches of industry.

Upcycling spent brewery grains through the production of carbon adsorbents-application to the removal of carbamazepine from water

Spent brewery grains, a by-product of the brewing process, were used as precursor of biochars and activated carbons to be applied to the removal of pharmaceuticals from water. Biochars were obtained by pyrolysis of the raw materials, while activated carbons were produced by adding a previous chemical activation step. The influence of using different precursors (from distinct fermentation processes), activating agents (potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and phosphoric acid), pyrolysis temperatures, and residence times was assessed. The adsorbents were physicochemically characterized and applied to the removal of the antiepileptic carbamazepine from water. Potassium hydroxide activation produced the materials with the most promising properties and adsorptive removals, with specific surface areas up to 1120 m² g^-1 and maximum adsorption capacities up to 190 ± 27 mg g^-1 in ultrapure water. The adsorption capacity suffered a reduction of < 70% in wastewater, allowing to evaluate the impact of realistic matrices on the efficiency of the materials.

Mild hydrothermally treated brewer's spent grain for efficient removal of uranyl and rare earth metal ions

The increasing concerns on uranium and rare earth metal ion pollution in the environment require sustainable strategies to remove them from wastewater. The present study reports an eco-friendly approach to convert a kind of protein-rich biomass, brewer's spent grain (BSG), into effective biosorbents for uranyl and rare earth metal ions. The employed method reduces the energy consumption by performing the hydrothermal treatment at a significantly lower temperature (150 °C) than conventional hydrothermal carbonization. In addition, with the aid of the Maillard reaction between carbohydrates and proteins forming melanoidins, further activation processes are not required. Treatment at 150 °C for 16 h results in an altered biosorbent (ABSG) with increased content of carboxyl groups (1.46 mmol g⁻¹) and a maximum adsorption capacity for La³⁺, Eu³⁺, Yb³⁺ (pH = 5.7) and UO₂²⁺ (pH = 4.7) of 38, 68, 46 and 221 mg g⁻¹, respectively. Various characterization methods such as FT-IR, ¹³C CP/MAS NMR, SEM-EDX and STA-GC-MS analysis were performed to characterize the obtained material and to disclose the adsorption mechanisms. Aside from oxygen-containing functional groups, nitrogen-containing functional groups also contribute to the adsorption. These results strongly indicate that mild hydrothermal treatment of BSG could be applied as a greener, low-cost method to produce effective adsorbents for uranyl and rare earth metal ion removal.

Effective biosorbent ABSG is obtained via hydrothermal treatment of BSG at low temperature without activation, minimizing energy consumption and environmental impact.
