UiO-66(Zr) as sorbent for porous membrane protected micro-solid-phase extraction androgens and progestogens in environmental water samples coupled with LC-MS/MS analysis: The application of experimental and molecular simulation method

NiFe-LDH/nylon 6 composite electrospun on polypropylene membrane: A new extractive device development for porous membrane protected micro-solid-phase extraction of organophosphate pesticides from fresh fruit juice samples coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass analysis

A unique strategy for developing porous membrane protected micro-solid phase extraction has been provided. An electrospun composite was fabricated on the sheet of membrane. To this end, NiFe-layered double hydroxide/Nylon 6 composite nanofibers were coated on a polypropylene membrane sheet followed by folding into a pocket shape, which were then utilized as a novel extractive device to extract of organophosphorus pesticides from fresh fruit juice samples prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The fabricated hybrid composites were successfully characterized. The effective parameters on extraction performance were investigated. LODs were 0.020-0.065 ng mL-1. Excellent linearity (R2≥0.996) was observed between 0.05 and 100.0 ng mL-1. RSDs% were in the range of 3.1-5.8% (intra-day, n = 3) and 2.6-5.5% (inter-day, n = 3×3). Satisfactory related recovery values within the acceptable range of 90.7-111.2% with RSDs% below 6.7% were achieved for the analysis of real samples.

Trends in Innovations and Recent Advances in Membrane Protected Extraction Techniques for Organics in Complex Samples

Membrane protected extraction is an ongoing innovation for isolation and pre-concentration of analytes from complex samples. The extraction process, clean-up and pre-concentration of analytes occur in a single step. The inclusion of solid sorbents such as molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) after membrane extraction ensures that selective double extraction occurs in a single step. The first step involves selective extraction using the membrane and diffused analytes are trapped on the solid sorbent enclosed in the membrane. No further clean-up is required even for very dirty samples like plant extracts and wastewaters samples. Sample clean-up occurs during extraction in the first process and not as additional step since matrix components are prevented from trapping on the sorbent. This can be referred to as prevention is better than cure approach. In this work, the analytical methods that employed membrane protected extraction for various organics such as pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pharmaceuticals are reviewed. The designs of these analytical methods, their applications, advantages and drawbacks are discussed in this review. Literature suggests that the introduction of solid sorbents in membrane creates the much-needed synergy in selectivity. Previous reviews focused on membrane combinations with MIPs while discussing micro-solid-phase extraction. The scope of this review was broadened to include other sample preparation aspects such as membrane protected stir bar solvent extraction and membrane protected solid-phase microextraction. In addition, novel sample preparation methods for solid samples which include Soxhlet membrane protected molecular imprinted solid phase extraction and membrane protected ultra sound assisted extracted are discussed.

On the use of metal-organic frameworks for the extraction of organic compounds from environmental samples

The determination of trace metals and organic contaminants in environmental samples, such as water, air, soil, and sediment, is until today a challenging process for the analytical chemistry. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel porous nanomaterials that are composed of metal ions and an organic connector. These materials are gaining more and more attention due to their superior characteristics, such as high surface area, tunable pore size, mechanical and thermal stability, luminosity, and charge transfer ability between metals and ligands. Among the various applications of MOFs are gas storage, separation, catalysis, and drug delivery. Recently, MOFs have been successfully introduced in the field of sample preparation for analytical chemistry and they have been used for sample pretreatment of various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of MOFs as novel adsorbents for the extraction of organic compounds from environmental samples.

A Comprehensive Review on Metal Organic Framework Based Preconcentration Strategies for Chromatographic Analysis of Organic Pollutants

Organic pollutants (OPs) are of worldwide concern for being hazardous to human existence and natural flora and fauna in view of their contaminating nature, bio-aggregation properties and long range movement abilities in environment. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new kind of crystalline porous material, composed of metal ions and multi dentate organic ligands with well-defined co-ordination geometry exhibiting promising application respect to adsorptive evacuation of OPs for chromatographic analysis. Applications of MOFs as preconcentration material and column packing material are reviewed. Key analytical characteristics of MOF based preconcentration techniques and coupled chromatographic procedures are summarized in detail. MOF based preconcentration strategies are compared with conventional sorbent based extraction techniques for thorough evaluation of performance of MOF materials.

Recent Advances in Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) for Analysis of Hormones

Steroid hormones are active substances that are necessary in the normal functioning of all physiological activities in the body, such as sexual characteristics, metabolism, and mood control. They are also widely used as exogenous chemicals in medical and pharmaceutical applications as treatments and at times growth promoters in animal farming. The vast application of steroid hormones has resulted in them being found in different matrices, such as food, environmental, and biological samples. The presence of hormones in such matrices means that they can easily come into contact with humans and animals as exogenous compounds, resulting in abnormal concentrations that can lead to endocrine disruption. This makes their determination in different matrices a vital part of pollutant management and control. Although advances in analytical instruments are constant, it has been determined that these instruments still require some sample preparation steps to be able to determine the occurrence of pollutants in the complex matrices in which they occur. Advances are still being made in sample preparation to ensure easier, selective, and sensitive analysis of complex matrices. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been termed as advanced solid-phase (SPE) materials for the selective extraction and preconcentration of hormones in complex matrices. This review explores the preparation and application of MIPs for the determination of steroid hormones in different sample types.

Application of electrospun polyacrylonitrile/Zn-MOF-74@GO nanocomposite as the sorbent for online micro solid-phase extraction of chlorobenzenes in water, soil, and food samples prior to liquid chromatography analysis

An online micro solid-phase extraction (online-µSPE) using electrospun nanofibers, as an efficient sorbent, was developed to extract chlorobenzenes (CBs) from paddy soil, agricultural wastewater, and food samples (fruit juices, vegetables, rice samples) followed by high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Electrospun nanofibers were fabricated using a nanocomposite containing polyacrylonitrile and Zn-metal organic framework 74 @graphene oxide (PAN/Zn-MOF-74@GO), and subsequently characterized. Under the optimal conditions, acceptable linearity was obtained in the range of 0.25-700.00 ng mL^-1 for 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB) and 2.50-700.00 ng mL^-1 for both 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (1,2,3-TCB) and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TCB) with determination coefficients ≥ 0.9991. The limits of detection ranged from 0.08 to 1.10 ng mL^-1. The intra-day and inter-day single fiber and fiber to fiber relative standard deviations were observed in the range of 4.1%-9.5% and 5.8%-12.1%, respectively. The performance of this method was examined by determining the target analytes in the different spiked samples.

Defective Zr-based metal-organic frameworks as sorbent for the determination of fungicides in environmental water samples by rapid dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry

In this work, defective Zr-based metal-organic framework was successfully synthesized and evaluated as a dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction sorbent for efficient preconcentration and determination of fungicides in complex water samples. The defective Zr-based metal-organic framework crystal with increased adsorption capacity was successfully synthesized by employing formic acid as the modulator. The extraction conditions, including the pH, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time, were comprehensively investigated. Under optimum conditions, it was found that dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction method, coupled with liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, exhibited a good linear relationship with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9980. The relative standard deviations of inter-day and intra-day precisions ranged from 2.6 to 9.2% and the limits of detection ranged from 0.004 to 0.036 μg/L. These merits, combined with their satisfactory recoveries (>80%), suggested the great potential of defective Zr-based metal-organic framework as a new adsorbent for efficient extraction of trace fungicides. This method exhibits good application potential for the pretreatment of fungicides from environmental water samples.

Zinc Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Ofloxacin Adsorbents in Polluted Waters: ZIF-8 vs. Zn3(BTC)2

Two different zinc-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were investigated to remove one of the most used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, Ofloxacin (OFL), from polluted water. The most common zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and the green Zn(II) and benzene-1,3,5-tri-carboxylate (Zn3(BTC)2) were prepared through a facile synthetic route and characterized by means of Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy, X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. The two MOFs were compared in terms of both adsorption and kinetic aspects under real conditions (tap water, natural pH). Results showed that OFL was adsorbed in remarkable amounts, 95 ± 10 and 25.3 ± 0.8 mg g-1 on ZIF-8 and Zn3(BTC)2, respectively, following different mechanisms. Specifically, a Langmuir model well described the ZIF-8 profile, while for Zn3(BTC)2, cooperative adsorption occurred. Moreover the kinetic results were quite different, pseudo-second-order and sigmoidal, respectively. The suitability of ZIF-8 and Zn3(BTC)2 as adsorbent phases for water depollution was tested on tap water samples spiked with OFL 10 µg L-1. The obtained removal efficiencies, of 88% for ZIF-8 and 72% for Zn3(BTC)2, make these materials promising candidates for removing fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) from polluted waters, notwithstanding their limited reusability in tap water, as demonstrated by in-depth characterization of the two MOFs after usage.

Preparation of a zirconium terephthalate metal-organic framework coated magnetic nanoparticle for the extraction of berberine prior to high-performance liquid chromatography analysis

In this study, a zirconium terephthalate metal-organic framework-coated magnetic nanoparticle (UiO-66@PA@PEI@Fe₃ O₄ ) was synthesized for the extraction of berberine prior to high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The phytic acid, which could be grafted onto the magnetic nanoparticle through electrostatic interaction with the abundant amino groups of polyethylenimine, possesses outstanding metal ion coordination ability for the immobilization of metal-organic frameworks UiO-66. The physicochemical properties of the obtained nanoparticle were thoroughly investigated by a series of characterization techniques. Then, the factors that will affect the extraction efficiency and recovery of berberine were investigated. Results indicated that the material had good stability and reusability, and high adsorption capacity (50.01 mg/g) to berberine through single-layer adsorption. In addition, a molecular docking study indicated that the interactions between the material and berberine were mainly π-π stacking and hydrophobic interaction. Finally, the material was successfully applied to the extraction of berberine in Rhizoma Coptidis and Cortex Phellodendri extracts with the recoveries of 76.1% and 71.6%, respectively.

MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives: from synthesis to application for wastewater decontamination

MIL-100(Fe), an environmental-friendly and water-stable metal-organic framework (MOF), has caught increasing research and application attention in the recent decade. Thanks to its mesoporous structure and eximious surface area, MIL-100(Fe) has been utilized as precursors for synthesizing various porous materials under high thermolysis temperature, which makes the derivatives of MIL-100(Fe) pretty promising candidates for the decontamination of wastewater. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the versatile synthetic methods and conditions for optimizing the properties of MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives. Then, diverse environmental applications (i.e., adsorption, photocatalysis, and Fenton-like reaction) of MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives and the corresponding removal mechanisms are detailed in the discussion. Finally, existing knowledge gaps related to fabrications and applications are discussed to close and promote the future development of MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives toward environmental applications. Membrane-Protected Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for the Microextraction of Indole-3-butyric Acid in Mung Bean Sprouts

Based on the hollow fiber protected molecularly imprinted polymer, a micro-solid-phase extraction (μ-SPE) method was developed and applied for the analysis of indole-3-butyric acid in mung bean sprouts by high-performance liquid chromatography. The extraction conditions of the μ-SPE method were optimized using L⁹(3⁴) orthogonal, and optimum conditions were found as follows: pH of sample solution was 2.0, chloroform was the organic solvent for embedding the μ-SPE bars, and acetonitrile was the desorption solvent. In addition, the extraction time was 80 min, desorption time was 5 min, stirring speed was 800 rpm, and concentration of NaCl was 10%. Under the optimum conditions, a standard curve was established for IBA, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999. After extraction with phosphate buffer solution (pH = 9.0), successful pretreatment of mung bean sprouts was achieved by the μ-SPE method. The limit of detection was 0.075 mg/kg, and the recoveries were found to be in the range of 88.9-106.4%. This method is simple, environmentally friendly, and can be used for the determination of indole auxin contents in green bean sprouts quickly and accurately.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Green Analytical Chemistry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous hybrid materials composed of metal ions and organic linkers, characterized by their crystallinity and by the highest known surface areas. MOFs structures present accessible cages, tunnels and modifiable pores, together with adequate mechanical and thermal stability. Their outstanding properties have led to their recognition as revolutionary materials in recent years. Analytical chemistry has also benefited from the potential of MOF applications. MOFs succeed as sorbent materials in extraction and microextraction procedures, as sensors, and as stationary or pseudo-stationary phases in chromatographic systems. To date, around 100 different MOFs form part of those analytical applications. This review intends to give an overview on the use of MOFs in analytical chemistry in recent years (2017–2019) within the framework of green analytical chemistry requirements, with a particular emphasis on possible toxicity issues of neat MOFs and trends to ensure green approaches in their preparation.
