Advances in magnetic analytical extraction techniques for detecting antibiotic residues in edible samples

The widespread use of antibiotics in agricultural and animal husbandry to treat bacterial illnesses has resulted in a rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These bacteria can grow when antibiotic residues are present in food items, especially in edible animal products. As a result, it is crucial to monitor and regulate the amounts of antibiotics in food. Magnetic analytical extractions (MAEs) have emerged as a potential approach for extracting antibiotic residues from food using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Recent improvements in MAEs have resulted in the emergence of novel MNPs with better selectivity and sensitivity for the extraction of antibiotic residues from food samples. Consequently, this review paper addresses current developments in MAE for extracting antibiotic residues from edible samples. It also provides a critical analysis of contemporary MAE practices. The current issues and potential future developments in this field are also discussed, thereby providing a framework for future study paths.

How to apply terpenoid-based deep eutectic solvents for removal of antibiotics and dyes from water: Theoretical prediction, experimental validation and quantum chemical evaluation

This study proposed a theoretical prediction method and mechanism investigation for the extraction of antibiotics and dyes from aqueous media using terpenoid-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Firstly, Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) approach was applied to predict selectivity, capacity and performance index in the extraction of 15 target compounds including antibiotics (tetracyclines, sulfonamides, quinolones, β-lactams) and dyes by 26 terpenoid-based DESs, and thymol-benzyl alcohol shows promising theoretical selectivity and extraction efficiency for the target compounds. Moreover, the structures of both hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and hydrogen bond donors (HBD) have an impact on the predicted extraction performance, which can be improved by tailoring those candidates with higher polarity, smaller molecular volume, shorter alkyl chain length and the presence of aromatic ring structures, etc. According to the predicted molecular interactions revealed by σ-profile and σ-potential, the DESs with HBD ability can promote the separation process. Furthermore, reliability of proposed prediction method was confirmed by experimental verification, indicating that the trends of theoretical extraction performance index were similar with the experimental results by using actual samples. At last, the extraction mechanism was evaluated by quantum chemical calculations based on visual presentations, thermodynamic calculations and topological properties; and the target compounds showed favorable energies of solvation to transfer from aqueous phase to DESs phase. The proposed method has been proved with potential to provide the efficient strategies and guidance for more applications (e.g., microextraction, solid phase extraction, adsorption) with similar molecular interactions of green solvents in environmental research.

Restricted access polypyrrole employed in pipette-tip solid-phase extraction for determination of nimodipine and nicardipine in breast milk

A HPLC-UV method for the determination of nimodipine and nicardipine in breast milk using restricted access polypyrrole as an adsorbent in pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) has been developed. The chromatographic conditions were a C₁₈ column (150 mm × 4.60 mm, 5 μm) using methanol : acetonitrile : ultrapure water (55 : 30 : 15, v/v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min^-1 and detection at 236 nm. The adsorbents have been synthesized and characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, surface analysis, wettability and point zero charge, and were then applied in sample preparation. The main parameters that affect analyte recovery from breast milk by PT-SPE were optimized and the analytical method showed recoveries around 100%, linearity from 3 to 3000 ng mL^-1, and correlation coefficients (r) ≥ 0.99 for the two analytes, in addition to adequate precision, accuracy and robustness. Finally, the validated method has been successfully applied in analyses of breast milk from volunteers.

Facile room temperature synthesis of a NiFe2O4-based magnetic covalent organic framework for the extraction of tetracycline residues in environmental water samples prior to HPLC

In this study, a functionalized magnetic covalent organic framework (NiFe₂O₄@TAPB-TPA) was fabricated with NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles as the magnetic core, and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and terephthalaldehyde (TPA) as building blocks by a facile room temperature strategy. Benefitting from the π-π stacking and hydrogen bond interaction, NiFe₂O₄@TAPB-TPA showed great potential as a magnetic adsorbent for the extraction of tetracyclines (TCs). Under optimal conditions, good linearities (R² > 0.9990) were obtained between the peak area and TC concentration in the range of 1-500 μg L^-1 with limits of detection ranging from 0.09 to 0.26 μg L^-1. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were less than 2.2% and 4.7%, respectively. The established method was successfully applied for the determination of TCs in diverse environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range of 91.6-102.7%. In addition, NiFe₂O₄@TAPB-TPA showed good reusability with the recoveries for TCs higher than 73.1% after nine recycles, indicating potential application of NiFe₂O₄@TAPB-TPA as an ideal adsorbent for the enrichment of TCs.

Emerging Applications of Versatile Polyaniline-Based Polymers in the Food Industry

Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been widely studied in various applications, such as sensors, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and semiconductors. Specifically, polyaniline (PANI) stands out in food industry applications due to its advantageous reversible redox properties, electrical conductivity, and simple modification. The rising concerns about food safety and security have encouraged the development of PANI as an antioxidant, antimicrobial agent, food freshness indicator, and electronic nose. At the same time, it plays an important role in food safety control to ensure the quality of food. This study reviews the emerging applications of PANI in the food industry. It has been found that the versatile applications of PANI allow the advancement of modern active and intelligent food packaging and better food quality monitoring systems.

Selective capture and determination of doxycycline in marine sediments by using magnetic imprinting dispersive solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography

Antibiotics are frequently used in aquaculture as feed additives and finally enter the marine environment that can pose potential threat to humans. In this study, magnetic molecularly imprinted nanocomposites were prepared by surface imprinting and applied as selective sorbents for specific capture of doxycycline. A multivariate approach based on response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design was adopted to optimize the dispersive solid-phase extraction of doxycycline from marine sediment. Three key parameters, including adsorbent amount and type of washing/eluting solvent, were screened. Under optimum conditions, the limit of detection was 0.03 μg g^-1 with good linearity from 0.5 to 20 μg g^-1 followed by HPLC detection. Finally, two sediment samples were analysed and satisfactory recoveries between 90.60 % and 93.76 % were obtained with acceptable relative standard deviations (≤4.12 %), suggesting a promising applicability of the developed method for efficient extraction and sensitive quantification of antibiotics in complex marine environmental matrix.

S. M. Montenegro MC, Rodríguez-Díaz JM. Contaminants in the cow's milk we consume? Pasteurization and other technologies in the elimination of contaminants

Cow's milk is currently the most consumed product worldwide. However, due to various direct and indirect contamination sources, different chemical and microbiological contaminants have been found in cow's milk. This review details the main contaminants found in cow's milk, referring to the sources of contamination and their impact on human health. A comparative approach highlights the poor efficacy and effects of the pasteurization process with other methods used in the treatment of cow's milk. Despite pasteurization and related techniques being the most widely applied to date, they have not demonstrated efficacy in eliminating contaminants. New technologies have appeared as alternative treatments to pasteurization. However, in addition to causing physicochemical changes in the raw material, their efficacy is not total in eliminating chemical contaminants, suggesting the need for new research to find a solution that contributes to improving food safety.

Covalent organic framework-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4-based magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of tetracyclines from environmental water prior to HPLC analysis

In this work, COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe₃O₄ was synthesized by immobilization of COF-LZU1 onto the surface of polyethyleneimine-functionalized Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (PEI@Fe₃O₄) and employed as an adsorbent for magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of tetracyclines (TCs). COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe₃O₄ was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms analysis. The optimal extraction and desorption conditions were as follows: 15.00 mL sample solution (pH 7.0) extracted with 5.0 mg of adsorbent for 30 min at 30 °C, and then desorbed with 1.50 mL methanol/acetonitrile/0.02 mol L^-1 oxalic acid solution (v/v, 1 : 2 : 7). Good linearities were obtained between the peak area and TC concentration ranging from 5-500 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficients (R²) higher than 0.9992 and limits of detection lower than 0.51 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-day and inter-day were less than 5.7% and 7.4%, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of TCs in environmental water samples with recoveries in the range of 87.0-113.8% and RSDs less than 5.1%, suggesting great potential of COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe₃O₄ for efficient extraction and analysis of trace TCs in water samples.

Highly selective enrichment and direct determination of imazethapyr residues from milk using magnetic solid-phase extraction based on restricted-access molecularly imprinted polymers

Restricted access media magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (RAM-MMIPs) were prepared as magnetic solid phase extraction (M-SPE) material by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique. The resulting RAM-MMIPs had a uniform, imprinted, hydrophilic layer (63 nm), good binding capacity (34.85 mg g-1) and satisfactory selectivity. In addition, these RAM-MMIPs had a robust ability to eliminate the interference of protein macromolecules. These RAM-MMIPs were then coupled with HPLC/UV to identify imazethapyr (IM) residues in untreated milk samples. Several major factors would affect M-SPE extraction efficiency, such as the amount of RAM-MMIPs, pH, extraction time of the sample solution, and the volume ratio of the elution solvent. Under the optimal conditions, the developed method had good linearity (R2 > 0.9993), low detection limit (2.13 μg L-1), and low quantitative limit (7.15 μg L-1). These results indicated this proposed approach is an efficient method for direct enrichment and detection of IM herbicides in milk and other biological samples.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted conducting polymer for determination of praziquantel enantiomers in milk

A new selective adsorbent based on magnetic molecularly imprinted conducting polymer was firstly synthetized and applied to the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) for the determination of PZQ enantiomers in milk samples.
