Superhydrophobic surfaces: From nature to biomimetic through VOF simulation

Computational fluid dynamics simulation experimental verification and analysis of droplets deposition behaviour on vibrating pear leaves

BACKGROUND

The interaction between canopy and droplets is very important in the process of crop spraying. During the actual air-assisted application process, air-mist flow inevitably disturbs the leaves before droplets reaching them, which will also affect the final deposition state of the droplets on the leaf. Currently, researches on the interaction between droplets and the target leaf surface mainly focuses on the deposition behaviour on the surface of stationary target leaves rather than the dynamic leaves. Therefore, the deposition characteristics after the collision between the droplets and dynamic leaves are important for practical application and worth further study.

RESULTS

Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to characterise the surface roughness, contact angle, and mechanical vibration. The interaction platform between the droplet and the vibrating pear leaf was built for experimental verification under laboratory conditions. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, which revealed the main reason for the droplet spreading and sliding was the inertial force generated by the relative velocity. It also indicated that the pear leaf vibration can improve the deposition of low-velocity and small droplets, which is different from that of static pear leaves.

CONCLUSION

The deposition effect of droplets in vibrating pear leaves was investigated. This study also provides a simulation method for the collision between a vibrating leaf and moving droplets, and provides reference for the study of droplet deposition characteristics under the vibration of fruit trees.

CFD simulation of wettability of laser-structured surfaces

This paper describes the numerical analysis of the wettability of the micro structured surfaces. The structure of the surface are the grooves created by the laser ablation. The main goal is to find the influence of the groove parameters on the wettability, specifically the contact angle. Ansys Fluent using the VOF method for multiphase simulation is used. In total, five different structures were investigated. The work started with the validation of the CFD methodology based on the experimental data for some structures. The CFD analysis was then performed. The fields of volume fraction as a results have been assessed to reach the contact angle value. The influence of structure parameters on the contact angle value were discussed. Finally, the recommendations for the optimal structure were defined.

Prediction of Droplet Sliding on the Continuity of the Three-Phase Contact Line

Many animals and plants have evolved wonderful hydrophobic abilities to adapt to the complex climate environment. The microstructure design of a superhydrophobic surface focuses on bionics and will be restricted by processing technology. Although certain functions can be achieved, there is a lack of unified conclusion on the wetting mechanism and a few quantitative analyses of the continuity of the three-phase contact line. Therefore, the relationship between the surface microstructure of the lattice pattern and the critical sliding angle of the water droplet in the Cassie state was investigated in this paper, and we proposed a method to quantitatively analyze the continuity of the three-phase contact line by a dimensionless length f. The results showed that the three-phase contact line was an important factor to determine the sliding performance of the droplet. The upward traction force generated by the surface tension through the force analysis on the three-phase contact line can enhance the sliding ability of the droplet on the solid surface. There was a good negative linear correlation between the critical sliding angle and dimensionless length, which provided a guiding basis for the optimal design of superhydrophobic surfaces.

Exploring Contact Angle Hysteresis Behavior of Droplets on the Surface Microstructure

It is confirmed that surfaces with specific microstructures could exhibit good superhydrophobic properties, and there are also a lot of conclusions about droplet hysteresis behavior. However, most of the research methods are based on two-dimensional ideal model and experimental observation at the macroscale. Further research needs to be conducted about the hysteresis behavior of droplets on the microstructure surface under three-dimensional conditions. In this paper, the influence of curvature variation of the liquid surface between pillars on the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) has been investigated. The simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Analyses were conducted on the morphology change and force of the liquid surface between pillars, and an index was proposed to describe the degree of difficulty of liquid surface movement. It was revealed that a change in the direction of the surface tension at the three-phase interface caused by curvature variation of the liquid surface between pillars played an important role in the movement of the liquid surface. The greater the surface tension component in the normal direction of the liquid surface, the more likely it was for the liquid surface to advance or recede. The local curvature of the liquid surface increased or the angles between the pillars increased, and the effect of the CAH would be weakened.

Optimization of Performance Parameters and Mechanism of Bionic Texture on Friction Surface

In this paper, a variety of micro-textures made by imitating the biological body surface are mentioned, and four common biomimetic texture types—convex hull, pit, groove and corrugation—are summarized by referring to a large number of literatures. These texture types that are widely used are those of the grooves and the pits of non-smooth surface because their viscosity drag reduction effects are relatively optimal for wear-resistance; in view of these two types of textures (with others including pit diameter, groove width, depth and area of share, and morphology spacing), we use data analysis and comparisons to find optimal parameter values in order to find the optimal effect of drag reduction and anti-sticking wear-resistance. Several texture processing methods are briefly introduced through case analysis and an illustration of the viscosity drag reduction mechanism of wear-resistance, and general fluid dynamic pressure is deduced from a theory formula in order to facilitate future research work on the basis of the optimal parameters to further improve the friction, wear lubrication, and hydrophobic properties, thus improving the bionic texture surface efficiency of saving energy and reducing consumption in industrial applications.
