Validity of instruments for measuring the satisfaction of a woman and her partner with care received during labour and childbirth: Systematic review

Psychometric Reliability to Assess the Perception of Women's Fulfillment of Maternity Rights

The fulfillment of rights to maternal healthcare is a key factor for the wellbeing of women. However, there is a lack of an instrument to ascertain the experience of women during maternity to enable adequate monitoring. The aim of this study was to validate a new instrument to measure women's perception of the fulfillment of rights during healthcare in pregnancy and childbirth and immediately postpartum. The initial version of the instrument consists of 50 items and was validated using exploratory factor analysis. Additionally, the final version of the instrument consists of 29 items and was validated by confirmatory factor analysis and known-group validity. The instrument was applied to 185 Spanish women. The global Aiken's V of the initial instrument proposal was 0.89. The process resulted in an instrument with five factors (information, privacy, consent, support, and participation) that explained the 60% of the total variance. The score of the instrument was correlated with resilience, maternity beliefs, and positive and negative affect. External validation showed relations with age, gravida, and the number of times a woman has been in labor. Additionally, the Cronbach's α reliability was 0.93 [0.91; 0.94]. In conclusion, the instrument developed is consistent and has appropriate psychometric properties for assessing the fulfillment rights of maternity healthcare.

Factor structure and psychometric properties of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised in Portuguese postpartum women

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to develop a Portuguese-language version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) for clinical and research use in Portugal (PT-BSS-R). The factor structure, its invariance across depression levels, and the internal consistency of the PT-BSS-R were analysed.

METHOD

A sample of 1373 Portuguese-speaking postpartum women completed a sociodemographic and clinical form, the PT-BSS-R, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale through an online survey tool. Four competing models were tested through confirmatory factor analyses and bifactor model-based psychometric indices were calculated. The internal consistency and the divergent/convergent validity are analysed.

RESULTS

The psychometric properties of PT-BSS-R were found to be generally excellent. Both the original correlated three-factor model and the bifactor model exhibited a good fit to the data. Results from the bifactor model support the use of both the BSS-R total score and the subscale scores. Exemplary invariance findings were observed between groups stratified on the basis of depression screening. PT-BSS-R has demonstrated both divergent and convergent validity as well as internal consistency.

CONCLUSION

PT-BSS-R is a psychometrically robust measure of birth satisfaction appropriate for clinical and research use in Portugal.

The Childbirth Experiences of Pregnant Women Living with HIV Virus: Scoping Review

OBJECTIVE

Understand and explore the childbirth experiences of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWHIV). With the advent of several measures to decrease the intrapartum HIV infection and a strong emphasis on the humanization of childbirth, there is a growing focus on providing positive childbirth experiences for pregnant women. Indeed, a positive childbirth experience is even more important in the group of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWHIV) as it plays a pivotal role in enhancing the mother's adherence to her postpartum treatment and the newborn's engagement in Infectious Disease services.

METHODOLOGY

A scoping review was conducted. Searches were performed on databases, such as MEDLINE, PUBMED, WEB OF SCIENCE and Cochrane Library, using the following keywords: childbirth, birth, parturition, HIV, humaniz*, perceived safety, experience, maternal satisfaction, healthcare professional and midwi*. Articles meeting pre-established criteria were selected within the timeframe of 2013 to 2023 for inclusion in the review.

RESULTS

Out of a total of 2,340,391 articles, 4 were chosen based on our defined criteria. Three primary themes emerged from the selected articles: the assessment of childbirth experience quality, vulnerability and autonomy.

CONCLUSIONS

The four studies identified had a small sample size and were not adequately conducted with a specific focus on studying the childbirth experience of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWHIV). This scoping review revealed a gap in the existing literature, indicating a need for further research and clarification in the identified area.

Revisiting the Mackey Childbirth Satisfaction Rating Scale: Spanish adaptation, factor analysis, and sources of construct validity

BACKGROUND

Women's dissatisfaction with perinatal health care services is associated with poor postpartum outcomes for the mother and the baby. The Mackey Childbirth Satisfaction Rating Scale is a frequently used measure of women's childbirth satisfaction. However, its factor structure has been inconsistent across investigations. The goal of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale (i.e., factor structure and sources of validity evidence).

METHODS

This study is a descriptive prospective investigation. Participants included 106 pregnant women (mean age = 31.86, SD = 4.12) recruited from a public university hospital situated in South Madrid. Sources of construct validity of the Mackey were explored with the Women's View of Birth Labor Satisfaction Questionnaire. Sources of criterion validity were investigated with measures of pain (labor, delivery, and just after birth) and post-traumatic stress symptoms.

RESULTS

Minor adaptations in item distribution resulted in an adequate fit of the original six-factor solution of the Mackey scale (i.e., oneself, the partner, the baby, the nurse, the physician, and overall satisfaction). Sources of validity evidence supported the construct and criterion validity of the scale.

CONCLUSIONS

Obtaining a psychometrically and conceptually sound factor solution is fundamental when validating a scale. With the present study, researchers and clinicians (e.g., midwives) will be able to measure women's childbirth satisfaction in a more robust manner. Both antecedents and consequences of satisfaction were found to correlate with several satisfaction subscales, which might help guide prevention programs in mother care in a more efficient way.

Measuring Women's Satisfaction with Childbirth: A Literature Review of Measurement Properties

Introduction

Patient satisfaction is an important indicator of the quality of care provided. Evaluating women's satisfaction with childbirth is essential to improving obstetric care and ensuring a positive experience for mothers and newborns. The tools used to measure women's satisfaction with childbirth are very heterogeneous and multidimensional. Assessment tools used in practice should be tested and meet characteristics that are consistently validated.The aim is to identify currently available instruments measuring women's satisfaction with childbirth and to evaluate their structure, content and psychometric properties.

Methods

A systematic search for sources was carried out according to the criteria set. For the included studies, psychometric properties were assessed in accordance with the principles of the guideline for completing systematic reviews of patient-reported outcome measures, COSMIN.

Results

The review included 31 studies that reported the psychometric properties of six measurement instruments (questionnaires, scales). Content validity, structural validity, internal consistency, reliability and cross-cultural validity were assessed for the included studies. The Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ/CEQ2) and Birth Satisfaction Scale - Revised (BSS-R) were the most commonly used questionnaires in the studies.

Conclusions

Thorough testing of tools measuring women's satisfaction with childbirth, and adapting them to cultural and social contexts, is still essential. It is crucial that valid and reliable questionnaires are available for midwives in practice, for use in research, to inform clinical practice and for the results to help develop the services offered.

Key dimensions of women's and their partners' experiences of childbirth: A systematic review of reviews of qualitative studies

BACKGROUND

The World Health Organization 2018 intrapartum guideline for a positive birth experience emphasized the importance of maternal emotional and psychological well-being during pregnancy and the need for safe childbirth. Today, in many countries birth is safe, yet many women report negative and traumatic birth experiences, with adverse effects on their and their families' well-being. Many reviews have attempted to understand the complexity of women's and their partners' birth experience; however, it remains unclear what the key dimensions of the birth experience are.

OBJECTIVE

To synthesize the information from reviews of qualitative studies on the experience of childbirth in order to identify key dimensions of women's and their partners' childbirth experience.

METHODS

Systematic database searches yielded 40 reviews, focusing either on general samples or on specific modes of birth or populations, altogether covering primary studies from over 35,000 women (and >1000 partners) in 81 countries. We appraised the reviews' quality, extracted data and analysed it using thematic analysis.

FINDINGS

Four key dimensions of women's and partners' birth experience (covering ten subthemes), were identified: 1) Perceptions, including attitudes and beliefs; 2) Physical aspects, including birth environment and pain; 3) Emotional challenges; and 4) Relationships, with birth companions and interactions with healthcare professionals. In contrast with the comprehensive picture that arises from our synthesis, most reviews attended to only one or two of these dimensions.

CONCLUSIONS

The identified key dimensions bring to light the complexity and multidimensionality of the birth experience. Within each dimension, pathways leading towards negative and traumatic birth experiences as well as pathways leading to positive experiences become tangible. Identifying key dimensions of the birth experience may help inform education and research in the field of birth experiences and gives guidance to practitioners and policy makers on how to promote positive birth experiences for women and their partners.

Cultural adaptation, validation and evaluation of the psychometric properties of Childbirth Experience Questionnaire version 2.0 in the Spanish context

BACKGROUND

Several instruments have been designed to assess the childbirth experience. The Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) is one of the most widely used tools. There is an improved version of this instrument, the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ 2.0), which has not been adapted or validated for use in Spain. The aim of present study is to adapt the CEQ 2.0 to the Spanish context and evaluate its psychometric properties.

METHODS

This research was carried out in 2 stages. In the first stage, a methodological study was carried out in which the instrument was translated and back-translated, content validity was assessed by 10 experts (by calculating Aiken's V coefficient) and face validity was assessed in a sample of 30 postpartum women. In the second stage, a cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate construct validity by using confirmatory factor analysis, reliability evaluation (internal consistency and temporal stability) and validation by known groups.

RESULTS

In Stage 1, a Spanish version of the CEQ 2.0 (CEQ-E 2.0) was obtained with adequate face and content validity, with Aiken V scores greater than 0.70 for all items. A final sample of 500 women participated in Stage 2 of the study. The fit values for the obtained four-domain model were RMSEA = 0.038 [95% CI: 0.038-0.042], CFI = 0.989 [95% CI: 0.984-0.991], and GFI = 0.990 [95% CI: 0.982-0.991]. The overall Omega and Cronbach's Alpha coefficients were 0.872 [95% CI: 0.850-0.891] and 0.870 [95% CI: 0.849-0.890] respectively. A coefficient of intraclass correlation of 0.824 [95% CI: 0.314-0.936] (p ≤ 0.001) and a concordance coefficient of 0.694 [95% CI: 0.523-0.811] were obtained.

CONCLUSIONS

The Spanish version of CEQ 2.0 (CEQ-E 2.0), has adequate psychometric properties and is a valid, useful, and reliable instrument for assessing the childbirth experience in Spanish women.

Maternal satisfaction with group care: a systematic review

OBJECTIVE

This review examined the quantitative relationship between group care and overall maternal satisfaction compared with standard individual care.

DATA SOURCES

We searched CINAHL, Clinical Trials, The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from the beginning of 2003 through June 2023.

STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

We included studies that reported the association between overall maternal satisfaction and centering-based perinatal care where the control group was standard individual care. We included randomized and observational designs.

METHODS

Screening and independent data extraction were carried out by 4 researchers. We extracted data on study characteristics, population, design, intervention characteristics, satisfaction measurement, and outcome. Quality assessment was performed using the Cochrane tools for Clinical Trials (RoB2) and observational studies (ROBINS-I). We summarized the study, intervention, and satisfaction measurement characteristics. We presented the effect estimates of each study descriptively using a forest plot without performing an overall meta-analysis. Meta-analysis could not be performed because of variations in study designs and methods used to measure satisfaction. We presented studies reporting mean values and odds ratios in 2 separate plots. The presentation of studies in forest plots was organized by type of study design.

RESULTS

A total of 7685 women participated in the studies included in the review. We found that most studies (ie, 17/20) report higher satisfaction with group care than standard individual care. Some of the noted results are lower satisfaction with group care in both studies in Sweden and 1 of the 2 studies from Canada. Higher satisfaction was present in 14 of 15 studies reporting CenteringPregnancy, Group Antenatal Care (1 study), and Adapted CenteringPregnancy (1 study). Although indicative of higher maternal satisfaction, the results are often based on statistically insignificant effect estimates with wide confidence intervals derived from small sample sizes.

CONCLUSION

The evidence confirms higher maternal satisfaction with group care than with standard care. This likely reflects group care methodology, which combines clinical assessment, facilitated health promotion discussion, and community-building opportunities. This evidence will be helpful for the implementation of group care globally.

Risk factors for a negative birth experience using the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the risk factors for a negative birth experience using the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) questionnaire.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study including women who gave birth at a single tertiary hospital between February 2021 and January 1, 2022. Birth satisfaction was measured using the BSS-R questionnaire. Maternal, pregnancy, and delivery characteristics were collected. Negative birth experience was defined as a BSS-R score lower than the median. Multivariable regression analysis was used to examine the association between birth characteristics and negative birth experience.

RESULTS

A total of 1495 women answered the questionnaire and were included in the analysis; 779 women comprised the positive birth experience group and 716 women comprised the negative birth experience group. Prior deliveries, prior abortions, and smoking (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.52 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.41-0.66]; aOR, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.62-0.99]; aOR, 0.52 [95% CI, 0.27-0.99], respectively) were independently associated with lower risk of negative birth experience. Immigration, answering the questionnaires in person, and cesarean delivery were independently associated with increased negative birth experience risk (aOR, 1.39 [95% CI, 1.01-1.86]; aOR 1.37 [95% CI, 1.04-1.79]; aOR, 1.92 [95% CI, 1.52-2.41], respectively).

CONCLUSION

Parity, prior abortions, and smoking were associated with a lower risk of negative birth experience, while immigration, answering questionnaires in person, and cesarean delivery were associated with a higher risk of negative birth experience.

Translation and validation of the Swedish version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R)

BACKGROUND

Optimizing women's childbirth experience is essential for development of quality mother infant relationships. The Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) can be used to measure birth satisfaction.

AIM

The current investigation sought to translate and validate a Swedish version of the BSS-R.

METHOD

Following translation, a comprehensive psychometric validation of the Swedish-BSS-R (SW-BSS-R) was carried out using a multi-model, cross-sectional, between- and within-subjects design.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 619 Swedish-speaking women participated, from which 591 completed SW-BSS-R and were eligible for analysis.

DATA ANALYSIS

Discriminant, convergent, divergent and predictive validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and factor structure were evaluated.

RESULTS

The SW-BSS-R was found to have excellent psychometric properties and hence is a valid translation of the original UK(English)-BSS-R. Important insights into relationships between mode of birth, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and postnatal depression (PND) were observed.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The SW-BSS-R is a psychometrically valid translation of the original BSS-R and is suitable for use in a Swedish-speaking population of women. The study has also highlighted important dynamics between birth satisfaction and areas of significant clinical concern (i.e., mode of birth, PTSD and PND) in Sweden.

Experiences of childbirth care among immigrant and non-immigrant women: a cross-sectional questionnaire study from a hospital in Norway

BACKGROUND

Immigrant women have higher risks for poor pregnancy outcomes and unsatisfactory birth experiences than the general population. The mechanisms behind these associations remain largely unknown, but they may result from differential care provided to immigrant women or unsatisfactory interactions with health providers. This study aimed to investigate immigrant and non-immigrant women's experiences of health care during childbirth, particularly assessing two dimensions: perceived general quality of care and attainment of health care needs during childbirth.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study carried out over 15 months in 2020 and 2021, and data were collected from a self-completed questionnaire. The labour and birth subscale from the Experience of Maternity Care questionnaire was used to assess the primary outcome of care experiences. A total of 680 women completed the questionnaire approximately within two days after birth (mean 2.1 days) at a hospital in Trondheim, in central Norway. The questionnaire was provided in eight languages.

RESULTS

The 680 respondents were classified as immigrants (n = 153) and non-immigrants (n = 527). Most women rated their quality of care during childbirth as high (91.5%). However, one-quarter of the women (26.6%) reported unmet health care needs during childbirth. Multiparous immigrant women were more likely than multiparous non-immigrant women to report that their health care needs were unmet during childbirth (OR: 3.31, 95% CI: 1.91-5.72, p < 0.001, aOR: 2.83, 95% CI: 1.53-5.18, p = 0.001). No other significant differences between immigrant versus non-immigrant women were found in subjective ratings of childbirth care experiences. Having a Norwegian-born partner and a high level of Norwegian language skills did not influence the immigrant women's experience of childbirth care.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that many women feel they receive high-quality health care during childbirth, but a considerable number still report not having their health care needs met. Also, multiparous immigrant women report significantly more unmet health care needs than non-immigrants. Further research is required to assess immigrant women's childbirth experiences and for health care providers to give optimal care, which may need to be tailored to a woman's cultural background and individual expectations.

Translation and validation of the Dutch version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R)

BACKGROUND

Recent observations suggest birth satisfaction may be significantly associated with postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD). The Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) is increasingly used Internationally as a short, valid and reliable multi-dimensional measure of birth experience. The current study sought to develop a Dutch version of the BSS-R (D-BSS-R) for clinical and research application in the Netherlands.

METHODS

Post-translation, a cross-sectional design with an embedded between-subjects component was used to evaluate key indices of validity and reliability of the D-BSS-R in a purposive sampled cohort of 244 Dutch-speaking women in the Netherlands. Confirmatory factor analysis, divergent, convergent and known-groups discriminant validity were evaluated as was the internal consistency of the measure.

RESULTS

The D-BSS-R was found to be a generally valid and reliable measure of birth experience with the key measurement characteristics of the original English-language measure transferring well to the Dutch context. Statistically significant negative correlations were observed between all D-BSS-R sub-scales and a validated measure of PTSD.

CONCLUSIONS

The D-BSS-R represents a valid and reliable measure of birth experience suitable and appropriate for use in the Netherlands. The study corroborates previous suggestions of linkage between birth satisfaction and PP-PTSD using a robust and diagnostically valid measure of trauma.

Factors that Promote a Positive Childbearing Experience: A Qualitative Study

INTRODUCTION

Experiences of pregnancy and birth are important and have long-term impacts on the well-being of women and their families. Perinatal services should aim for care that promotes a positive childbearing experience, as well as optimizing health outcomes for the woman and newborn. This study aimed to understand the health system factors that promote a positive childbearing experience.

METHODS

Women who had a positive experience and had given birth in Australia in the previous 12 months were recruited for individual semistructured interviews. The interview guide focused on health system factors that participants credited with contributing to their positive experience of perinatal care. Interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Data from 36 interviews were thematically analyzed, and 4 major themes were generated: health care provider attributes, health system attributes, communication and decision-making, and experience of care. The salient factors that promoted positive experiences included care that was respectful and individualized with effective communication, access to midwifery continuity of care models, and good integration between services. Competent and professional health care providers who facilitated shared decision-making were also essential.

DISCUSSION

Although women often sought out care that promoted physiologic birth, they emphasized that the way they were cared for was more important than fulfilling specific birth aspirations. Quality maternity care has the capacity to support a woman's confidence in her own abilities and promote a positive, and sometimes transformative, childbearing experience.

Women's experiences throughout the birthing process in health facilities in Arab countries: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Mistreatment of women during facility-based childbirth has become a significant public health issue globally and is gaining worldwide attention. This systematic review of quantitative studies aimed to estimate the prevalence of mistreatment women may experience throughout the birthing process in health facilities in Arab countries. The review also aimed to identify the types of mistreatment, terminology, tools, and methods used to address this topic.

METHODOLOGY

The search was conducted using three electronic databases: "PubMed," "Embase," and "CINAHL" in May 2020. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included and assessed for risk of bias. The analysis was conducted based on the evidence-based typology developed by Bohren et al. as a guide to try to estimate the prevalence of mistreatment.

RESULTS

Eleven studies out of 174 were included. The included studies belonged to only seven Arab countries out of 22 Arab countries. The mistreatment of women during childbirth is still new in the region. Searching within the included studies yielded diverse and indirect terms that were a proxy for the word mistreatment. These terms were not comprehensive to cover different aspects of the topic. The tools that were used to measure the terms widely varied.. Moreover, it was not possible to estimate the prevalence of mistreatment of women due to high heterogeneity among the 11 studies.

CONCLUSION

The topic of mistreatment of women in Arab countries was not adequately addressed in the studies included in this review. More research on this topic is recommended due to its importance in improving maternal health in the region. However, a standardized and comprehensive terminology for mistreatment of women, a standardized tool, and a standardized methodology are recommended to enable comparability between results and allow pooling to estimate the prevalence.

Avaliação da satisfação de mulheres com trabalho de parto e parto em hospital de ensino

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a satisfação de puérperas quanto ao trabalho de parto e parto. Método: Pesquisa analítica e transversal, realizada com puérperas de um hospital de ensino. Os dados foram coletados de outubro a dezembro de 2020, por meio de um questionário sociodemográfico e obstétrico e da Escala de Avaliação da Satisfação com o Parto de Mackey. A escala possui 34 itens divididos em seis domínios, com pontuação mínima de 34 e máxima de 170 pontos. Resultados: Em uma amostra de 243 puérperas, a pontuação média foi de 141 pontos, com desvio padrão de 16,8. Verificou-se alta satisfação das mulheres em todos os domínios da escala e baixa adesão às boas práticas de atenção ao parto e nascimento, recomendadas atualmente. Conclusão: As participantes se mostraram satisfeitas com a experiência. A limitação do processo educativo em saúde durante o pré-natal pode diminuir o discernimento e o julgamento crítico das parturientes.

Assessment of women’s satisfaction with labor and childbirth at a teaching hospital

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the satisfaction of puerperal women regarding labor and childbirth. Method: Analytical and cross-sectional research carried out with puerperal women at a teaching hospital. Data were collected from October to December 2020 by a sociodemographic and obstetric questionnaire and the Mackey Childbirth Satisfaction Rating Scale. The scale has 34 items divided into six domains, with a minimum score of 34 and a maximum of 170 points. Results: The mean score was 141 points in a sample of 243 puerperal women, with a standard deviation of 16.8. There was high satisfaction among women in all domains of the scale and low adherence to the best practices in labor and childbirth care currently recommended. Conclusion: The women were satisfied upon the experience. The limitation of the health education process during prenatal care may reduce the parturient’ discernment and critical judgment.

Outcomes to measure the effects of pharmacological interventions for pain management for women during labour and birth: a review of systematic reviews and randomised trials

BACKGROUND

Pharmacological pain management options can relieve women's pain during labour and birth. Trials of these interventions have used a wide variety of outcomes, complicating meaningful comparisons of their effects. To facilitate better assessment of the effectiveness of labour pain management in trials and meta-analyses, consensus about key outcomes and the development of a core outcome set is essential.

OBJECTIVE

To identify all outcomes used in studies of pharmacological pain management interventions during labour and birth.

DESIGN

A review of systematic reviews and their included randomised controlled trials was undertaken.

SEARCH STRATEGY

Cochrane CENTRAL was searched to identify all Cochrane systematic reviews describing pharmacological pain management options for labour and birth. Search terms included 'pain management', 'labour' and variants, with no limits on year of publication or language.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Cochrane reviews and randomised controlled trials contained within these reviews were included, provided they compared a pharmacological intervention with other pain management options, placebo or no treatment.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

All outcomes reported by reviews or trials were extracted and tabulated, with frequencies of individual outcomes reported.

MAIN RESULTS

Nine Cochrane reviews and 227 unique trials were included. In total, 146 unique outcomes were identified and categorised into maternal, fetal, neonatal, child, health service, provider's perspective or economic outcome domains.

CONCLUSIONS

Outcomes of pharmacological pain management interventions during labour and birth vary widely between trials. The standardisation of trial outcomes would permit the assessment of meta-analyses for best clinical practice.

Given the stark disparities in maternal mortality and adverse birth outcomes among Black, indigenous, and other people of color, there is a need to better understand and measure how individuals from these communities experience their care during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to develop and validate a tool that can be used to measure person-centered prenatal care that reflects the experiences of people of color.

STUDY DESIGN

We followed standard procedures for scale development-integrated with community-based participatory approaches-to adapt a person-centered maternity care scale that was initially developed and validated for intrapartum care in low-resource countries to reflect the needs and prenatal care experiences of people of color in the United States. The adaptation process included expert reviews with a Community Advisory Board, consisting of community members, community-based health workers, and social service providers from San Francisco, Oakland, and Fresno, to assess content validity. We conducted cognitive interviews with potential respondents to assess the clarity, appropriateness, and relevance of the questions, which were then refined and administered in an online survey to people in California who had given birth in the past year. Data from 293 respondents (84% of whom identified as Black) who received prenatal care were used in psychometric analysis to assess construct and criterion validity and reliability.

RESULTS

Exploratory factor analysis yielded 3 factors with eigenvalues of >1, but with 1 dominant factor. A 34-item version of the person-centered prenatal care scale was developed based on factor analyses and recommendations from the Community Advisory Board. We also developed a 26-item version using stricter criteria for relevance, factor loadings, and uniqueness. Items were grouped into 3 conceptual domains representing subscales for "dignity and respect," "communication and autonomy," and "responsive and supportive care." The Cronbach alphas for the 34-item and the 26-item versions and for the subscales were >0.8. Scores based on the sum of responses for the 2 person-centered prenatal care scale versions and all subscales were standardized to range from 0 to 100, where higher scores indicate more person-centered prenatal care. These scores were correlated with global measures of prenatal care satisfaction suggesting good criterion validity.

CONCLUSION

We present 2 versions of the person-centered prenatal care scale: a 34-item and a 26-item version. Both versions have high validity and reliability in a sample made up predominantly of Black women. This scale will facilitate measurement to improve person-centered prenatal care for people of color and could contribute to reducing disparities in birth outcomes. The similarity with the original scale also suggests that the person-centered prenatal care may be applicable across different contexts. However, validation with more diverse samples in additional settings is needed.

Translation and Validation of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised in Urdu for Use in Pakistan

BACKGROUND

Satisfaction with the birth experience is increasingly recognized as critical to the well-being of mother and baby and thus accurate assessment of this key dimension is essential. The Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) has been shown to be a robust, valid, and reliable measure of birth experience. The current study sought to develop an Urdu version of the measure to be used in Pakistan.

METHODS

Following translation, a cross-sectional design was used to examine the measurement properties of the Pakistan (Urdu)-BSS-R (P-BSS-R). Participants were a purposive sample of Pakistani postnatal women (n = 200). Key psychometric properties were examined using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), internal consistency evaluation, and known-groups discriminant validity testing.

RESULTS

The majority of measurement parameters for clinical application of the P-BSS-R were found to be acceptable with good known-groups discriminant validity and data fit to the tri-dimensional theoretical model of the BSS-R observed. However, some idiosyncratic observations were highlighted, including unexpected low internal consistency.

CONCLUSIONS

The P-BSS-R was found to be a generally valid and reliable measure of the experience, a caveat being low internal consistency warranting further investigation.

Validity and reliability of the Iranian preterm birth experiences and satisfaction scale: A methodological and cross-sectional study

Background: Women’s experience and satisfaction with childbirth care are increasingly being addressed by health care providers, managers, and policymakers. Due to need for a validated special scale for assessing satisfaction of women with preterm birth, we aimed to translate and adapt the first specific tool, Preterm Birth Experiences and Satisfaction Scale (P-BESS), into Persian language and evaluate its psychometric properties.

Methods: A methodological and cross-sectional study was conducted in two tertiary levels of maternal hospitals in Tabriz. The Iranian version of the scale was developed from the original English version using forward-backward translation. After confirmation of its face and content validity, the scale was completed by 201 women who had given birth prematurely.

Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed three factors (staff professionalism and empathy, confidence in Staff, information and explanations) with eigenvalues greater than 1, explaining a total variance of 55.4%. Confirmatory factory analysis showed that the 17-item, three factor model fitted the data well: the root mean square error of approximation 0.060. There were moderate correlations between the total and sub-scales of Iranian P-BESS and overall satisfaction (r = 0.45 to 0.66), as well as need for improvement (r = -0.46 to -0.61), which confirm convergent validity. Internal consistency and test–retest reliability of the scale and its sub-scales were satisfactory (α = 0.852 to 0.922, intraclass correlation coefficient; 0.83 to 0.92).

Conclusion: The Iranian version of P-BESS is a valid and reliable scale which can be used by policy makers, managers, health care providers and researchers.

Obstetric Violence in Spain (Part III): Healthcare Professionals, Times, and Areas

BACKGROUND

Obstetric violence is a worldwide public health problem, which seems greater in Spain. As no studies were found that identify the most representative healthcare professionals, times, and areas involved in obstetric violence, the objective of this work was to study at what time of maternity, with which professionals, and in what areas women identified obstetric violence.

METHODS

This descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was performed from January 2018 to June 2019. The main variables were the area (hospital, primary care, both), the time (pregnancy, birth, puerperium), and the professionals attending to women.

RESULTS

Our sample comprised 17,541 participants. The area identified with the most obstetric violence for the different studied variables was hospitals. Women identified more obstetric violence at time of birth. Findings such as lack of information and informed consent (74.2%), and criticism of infantile behavior and treatment (87.6%), stood out. The main identified healthcare professionals were midwives and gynecologists, and "other" professionals repeatedly appeared.

CONCLUSIONS

Having identified the professionals, times, and areas of most obstetric violence in Spain, it seems necessary to reflect on not only the Spanish National Health System's structure and management but also on healthcare professionals' training.

Women's agenda for the improvement of childbirth care: Evaluation of the Babies Born Better survey data set in Spain

BACKGROUND

Public patient involvement (PPI) generates knowledge about the health-illness process through the incorporation of people's experiences and priorities. The Babies Born Better (BBB) survey is a pan-European online questionnaire that can be used as a PPI tool for preliminary and consultative forms of citizens' involvement. The purpose of this research was to identify which practices support positive birth experiences and which ones women want changed.

METHODS

The BBB survey was distributed in virtual communities of practice and through social networks. The version launched in Spain was used to collect data in 2014 and 2015 from women who had given birth in the previous 5 years. A descriptive, quantitative analysis was applied to the sociodemographic data. Two open-ended questions were analyzed by qualitative content analysis using a deductive and inductive codification process.

RESULTS

A total of 2841 women participated. 41.1% of the responses concerned the category "Care received and experienced," followed by "Specific interventions and procedures" (26.6%), "Involved members of care team" (14.2%), and "Environmental conditions" (9%). Best practices were related to how care is provided and received, and the main areas for improvement referred to specific interventions and procedures.

CONCLUSIONS

This survey proved a useful tool to map the best and poorest practices reported. The results suggest a need for improvement in some areas of childbirth care. Women's reports on negative experiences included a wide range of routine clinical interventions, avoidable procedures, and the influence exerted by professionals on their decision-making.

Validation and factor structure of the Italian version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R)

OBJECTIVE

To validate the Italian-language version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) and report key measurement properties of the tool. To evaluate the impact of antenatal class attendance on BSS-R assessed birth satisfaction.

BACKGROUND

Maternal satisfaction is one of the standards of care defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to improve the quality of services. The BSS-R is a multi-dimensional self-report measure of the experience of labour and birth.

METHODS

Cross-sectional instrument evaluation design examining factor structure and key aspects of validity and reliability. Embedded between-subjects design to examine known-group discriminant validity and the impact of antenatal class attendance on BSS-R sub-scale and total scores as dependent variables. After giving birth, 297 women provided data for analysis.

RESULTS

The Italian version of the BSS-R (I-BSS-R) was the key study measure. The established three-factor and bi-factor models of the BSS-R were found to offer an excellent fit to the data. Comparison of the tri-dimensional measurement model and the bi-factor model of the BSS-R found no significant differences between models. Women who attended antenatal classes had significantly lower stress experienced during childbearing sub-scale scores (I-BSS-R SE), compared to those who did not. Good convergent, divergent validity and known-groups discriminant validity were established for the I-BSS-R. Internal consistency observations were found to be sub-optimal in this population.

CONCLUSIONS

On all key psychometric indices, with the exception of internal consistency that requires further investigation, the I-BSS-R was found to be a valid translation of the original BSS-R. The impact of antenatal classes on birth satisfaction warrants further research.

Association between maternal satisfaction and other indicators of quality of care at childbirth: a cross-sectional study based on the WHO standards

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to explore the association between maternal satisfaction and other indicators of quality of care (QoC) at childbirth, as defined by WHO standards.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

Referral hospital in Northeast Italy.

PARTICIPANTS

1244 consecutive mothers giving birth in the hospital participated in a survey.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Univariate analyses were performed to evaluate the association between maternal satisfaction and 61 variables, including measures of 'provision of care', 'experience of care', 'availability of resources' and other maternal characteristics. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to create groups of correlated variables, which were used in multivariate analysis.

RESULTS

Overall, 509 (40.9%) of women were >35 years of age, about half (52.7%) were highly educated, most (95.2%) were married/living with partner and employed (79.3%) and about half (52.9%) were primiparous. Overall, 189 (15.2%) were not born in Italy and 111 (8.9%) did not have Italian citizenship. Most women (84.2%) were highly satisfied (score ≥7/10) with the care received. Among the 61 variables explored, 46 (75.4%) were significantly associated with women's satisfaction, 33 with higher satisfaction and 13 with lower satisfaction. Multivariate analysis largely confirmed univariate findings, with six out of eight groups of correlated variables being statistically significantly associated with women's satisfaction. Factors most strongly associated with women's satisfaction were 'effective communication, involvement, listening to women's needs, respectful and timely care' (OR 16.84, 95% CI 9.90 to 28.61, p<0.001) and 'physical structure' (OR 6.51, 95% CI 4.08 to 10.40, p<0.001). Additionally, 'victim of abuse, discrimination, aggressiveness' was inversely associated with the wish to return to the facility or to recommend it to a friend (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.70, p<0.003).

CONCLUSION

This study suggested that many variables are strongly associated with women's satisfaction with care during childbirth and support the use of multiple measures to monitor the QoC at childbirth.

Associated factors of labor satisfaction and predictor of postnatal satisfaction in the north-east of Peninsular Malaysia

INTRODUCTION

Identifying the factors contributing to maternal satisfaction is a proxy measure to improve the quality of care. It evaluates the health service provision by understanding maternal perceptions and expectations and promoting adherence to health services. This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic, obstetric, and medical factors contributing to labor satisfaction among postpartum women and examine the association between labor and postnatal satisfaction.

METHODOLOGY

A cross-sectional study using systematic random sampling in a ratio of 1:5 based on the delivery list in a labor room in a tertiary hospital was applied. Information was obtained from medical records for sociodemographic characteristics and obstetric and medical histories. Face-to-face interviews were performed to obtain responses for Malay versions of the Women's Views of Birth Labour Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Women's Views of Birth Postnatal Satisfaction Questionnaire. Simple and general linear regression analyses were performed.

RESULTS

A total of 110 participants responded, accounting for a response rate of 100%. High-risk color codes, the period of gestation, household income, and were significantly associated with maternal satisfaction during labor. The association between labor and postnatal satisfaction was significant.

CONCLUSION

Identifying these associated factors and differences may lead to understanding and contributing to specific and targeted strategies for tackling issues related to maternal satisfaction.

Perceived satisfaction of women during labour at the Hospital Universitario Materno-Infantil of the Canary Islands through the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ-E)

OBJECTIVE

To determine the degree of satisfaction of women after childbirth at the Hospital Universitario Materno-Infantil of Gran Canaria (HUMIC) and to establish possible relationships between the degree of satisfaction and the variables studied.

METHOD

A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study with an analytical component. The study population comprised women who gave birth at the HUMIC in November 2018, recruited through consecutive non-probabilistic sampling. The Spanish version of the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ-E) was used (questionnaire with 4 domains: own capacity', professional support, perceived safety and participation/analytical model 2). In a first phase a descriptive analysis was made, and in a second phase an inferential analysis to explore the association between different variables.

RESULTS

The total sample comprised 257 women (n=257). The total score using the CEQ was 3.24 (SD .37 points). No statistically significant differences were found in the final CEQ score between the women who had a spontaneous delivery versus induction-stimulation (P=.563) or between primiparous versus multiparous women (P=.060). The women whose labour lasted 12hours or less (P=.024), without perineal trauma (P=.021) and those who had not undergone episiotomy (P=.002) achieved a better final CEQ score. Instrumental delivery (forceps) versus normal delivery is associated with lower scores with respect to the final CEQ-E score (P=≤.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Women's overall satisfaction after delivery in HUMIC was high. Instrumental delivery seems to be associated with lower perceived satisfaction. Aspects such as fear and fatigue in labour could affect satisfaction negatively. These aspects can be improved by establishing strategies to increase comfort and minimise pregnant women's fear of labour.

Cross-cultural validation and psychometrics' evaluation of women's experience of maternity care scale in French: the ESEM

BACKGROUND

Evaluating women's satisfaction should reflect the entire maternity care experience (antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal). The Women's Experience Maternity Care Scale (WEMCS) questionnaire enables this assessment. The purpose of this study was to translate in French, adapt and explore the psychometric properties of the WEMCS and to determine the best cut-off on the optimal satisfaction for the three scales.

METHODS

Backward, forward translation and cross-cultural adaptation were processed to validate the French version of WEMCS: Échelle de Satisfaction de l'Experience des soins en Maternité (ESEM). Psychometric tests assessed the questionnaire, which includes three scales, such as construct validity, internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha coefficients and ceiling and floor effects. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the best cut-off values for optimal satisfaction. Reproducibility was verified by test-retest reliability.

RESULTS

Primiparas with uncomplicated pregnancies were recruited antenatally at the University Hospital of Geneva. Of the 229 patients who agreed to participate, 202 women (88.2%) returned the test and retest questionnaires. Principal component analysis for the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal scales suggested the unidimensional character of the three scales; Cronbach's alpha coefficients were high for the three scales with values of > 0.85. Construct validity based on the five-point Likert scale values showed a Spearman's rho correlation of r = 0.56 for the antenatal scale (p < 0.001) and r = 0.62 for the intrapartum scale (p < 0.001), as well as a strong correlation with the postnatal scale, with r = 0.78 (p < 0.001). Optimum cut-off scores for the ROC curve of the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal scores were equal to or higher than 48, 50 and 70, respectively. The three scales showed good sensitivity and good specificity. The stability of the ESEM questionnaire was confirmed by intra-class correlation coefficients of > 0.80. However, the three scales revealed ceiling effects.

CONCLUSION

The psychometric proprieties of the ESEM demonstrate it's ability to evaluate the quality of perinatal health care. The ESEM should be tested in the context of different models of women's care and with women with different degrees of pregnancy complications to explore the validity of this scale.

The impact of obstetric interventions and complications on women's satisfaction with childbirth a population based cohort study including 16,000 women

Background

As a quality marker and a tool for benchmarking between units, a visual analogue scale (VAS) (ranging from 1 to 10) to estimate woman’s satisfaction with childbirth was introduced in 2014. This study aimed to assess how obstetric interventions and complications affected women’s satisfaction with childbirth.

Methods

A retrospective cohort study including 16,775 women with an available VAS score who gave birth between January 2016 and December 2017. VAS score, maternal and obstetric characteristics were obtained from electronic medical records and crude and adjusted odds ratios (aOR) were calculated.

Results

The total prevalence of dissatisfaction with childbirth (VAS 1–3) was 5.7%. The main risk factors for dissatisfaction with childbirth were emergency cesarean section, aOR 3.98 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.27–4.86, postpartum hemorrhage ≥2000 ml, aOR 1.85 95%CI 1.24–2.76 and Apgar score < 7 at five minutes, aOR 2.95 95%CI 1.95–4.47. The amount of postpartum hemorrhage showed a dose-response relation to dissatisfaction with childbirth. Moreover, labor induction, instrumental vaginal delivery, and obstetric anal sphincter injury were significantly associated with women’s dissatisfaction with childbirth. A total number of 4429/21204 (21%) women giving birth during the study period had missing values on VAS. A comparison of characteristics between women with and without a recorded VAS score was performed. There were statistically significant differences in maternal age and maternal BMI between the study population and excluded women due to missing values on VAS. Moreover, 64% of the women excluded were multiparas, compared to 59% in the study population.

Conclusions

Obstetric interventions and complications, including emergency cesareans section and postpartum hemorrhage, were significantly related to dissatisfaction with childbirth.

Such events are common and awareness of these associations might lead to a more individualized care of women during and after childbirth.

Women's satisfaction with maternity care during preterm birth

BACKGROUND

Women's satisfaction with maternity care is strongly influenced by their sociodemographic characteristics, values, and attitudes. The arrival of a preterm baby is often a traumatic time, with unique factors involved. The Spanish Preterm Birth Experience and Satisfaction Scale (P-BESS) is a robust instrument capable of assessing women's satisfaction during preterm birth. The purpose of this study was to assess women's satisfaction with maternity care during labor and birth with preterm babies in a Spanish-speaking population.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study. Participants were 182 women who gave birth within 37 weeks' gestation. Factors associated with satisfaction were studied through univariate and bivariate analyses and through multiple linear regression using the backward elimination method.

RESULTS

Women reported high satisfaction with maternity care overall (average score of 84 out of 95). Women with a university education were generally less satisfied. Women were more satisfied if they were pregnant for the first time. Women who reported a previous premature birth or neonatal death were more satisfied, and women who had prior miscarriages were less satisfied compared with women without these experiences.

CONCLUSIONS

The analysis confirmed that the majority of women surveyed were very satisfied with their childbirth experience. The Spanish P-BESS can be a useful way of prioritizing intervention measures, focusing on those aspects lowest scored by women, such as "information and explanations" and "confidence in staff," to improve maternity services for families experiencing preterm birth.

Psychometric properties of the Slovak version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R)

OBJECTIVE

This study is focused on assessing psychometric properties of the Slovak version of the 30-item Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and revised 10-item BSS-R.

STUDY DESIGN

Quantitative cross-sectional study design was used, with the primary goal of examining factor structure, internal consistency, and both divergent and known-groups validity of the Slovak version of BSS and BSS-R.

SETTING

Four public hospital sites in central Slovakia PARTICIPANTS: A 30-item BSS questionnaire was administered to 506 women 2-4 days after birth (mean age 29.9 years, SD = 5.1).

RESULTS

The mean BSS score was 112 (SD 13.6, score range 30-150), and BSS-R 27.3 (SD 5.4, score range 0-40). Significantly higher birth satisfaction was found among women after physiological birth, multiparas, women with supporting person at birth, with pain relief, and with university education. Both Slovak version of BSS and BSS-R have been shown to have good reliability, as well as good divergent and known-group validity. The results of confirmatory factor revealed that three-factor model of the BSS-R offers a good fit to the Slovak data (χ², df₃₂) = 79.40, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.96 and RMSEA = 0.05).

KEY CONCLUSIONS

The Slovak version of the 10-item BSS-R has been found to have excellent psychometric properties and can be used as a valid outcome measure of birth satisfaction in Slovak hospital settings.

First-time mothers' satisfaction with their birth experience - a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

To explore first-time mothers´ satisfaction with their birth experience using Visual Analog Scale and to identify possible risk factors for a negative birth experience.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional design using retrospective data collection from electronic medical files.

SETTING

A birthing center in southern Sweden, which has approximately 1400 births annually.

PARTICIPANTS

Primiparous women (N = 584) who gave birth during 2017. The cut-off point for a negative birth experience was set as ≤ 4 on the Visual Analog Scale.

MEASUREMENTS AND FINDINGS

The mean age of the women was 29 years (SD 5.1; range 16-47 years). Prevalence of a negative birth experience was 9.6%. The strongest risk factors for a negative birth experience were having obstetric anal sphincter injuries (AOR 2.8 CI 95% 1.1-7.2) and oxytocin augmentation started in the first stage of labor (AOR 2.2 CI 95% 1.1-4.4).

KEY CONCLUSIONS

Women who had their labours augmented with oxytocin or sustained an anal sphincter injury were statistically significantly more likely to have a negative birth experience. However, it is uncertain whether the women scored pain experience or birth experience when they reported their satisfaction on the Visual Analog Scale; further investigation is required.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

It is important to use a reliable and validated instrument to measure birth experience in order to promote respectful and supportive care for new mothers.

Fathers for the first time: Validation of a questionnaire to asses father experiences of first childbirth in Latin America

The active incorporation of men in the process of childbirth is an increasingly common practice internationally. However, there are no validated instruments for Latin America.

OBJECTIVE

To validate an instrument to assess new fathers' experiences during childbirth in Latin America.

DESIGN

Prospective validation study.

SETTING

Talcahuano, Chile.

POPULATION

Fathers who participated in the birth of their first child (n = 220) between September 2015 to May 2016, in a public hospital in Chile.

METHODS

The Swedish questionnaire "First Time Fathers Questionnaire" was used. As a first step, the questionnaire was translated to Spanish, followed by expert judgment of such translation and validation. For content validity, a descriptive analysis of the expert judgment and combined Kappa evaluation was performed. Construct validity with Exploratory Factor Analysis was done. Reliability based on internal consistency, was tested using Cronbach's Alpha. Criteria validity was tested with Pearson correlation and Student t-test, and logistic regression.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Questionnaire in Spanish with adequate evidence of reliability and validity.

RESULTS

Two components were identified: "Support from the Health System" and "Father Worry", with 19 items and adequate internal reliability (0.84 and 0.79 respectively). There is a statistically significant inverse correlation between "Father Worry" and "Support from the Health System". There is a statistically significant association between "Father Worry" and the type of delivery, being higher in Caesarean sections. There is a statistically significant association between "Support of the Health System" and preparation for childbirth being higher in those who were prepared.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides a validated instrument to assess the experience of fathers who participate in the birth of their first child in Latin America.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The evaluation of the paternal experience during birth contributes to the knowledge of the male's emotional processes involved in this event. Midwifery is in a key position to promote a transcendent parental experience.

Translation, adaptation and psychometric validation of the preterm birth experience and satisfaction scale (P-BESS) into Spanish

BACKGROUND

Preterm labour and birth are two of the most important issues in perinatal care. The birth of a preterm baby is often a stressful and traumatic time for parents. Assessment of satisfaction with maternity services is crucial and questionnaires are the most common method as long as they are well-constructed. Only one, The Preterm Birth Experience and Satisfaction Scale (P-BESS), developed in United Kingdom, has been designed for this specific birth type.

OBJECTIVES

To translate, transculturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the P-BESS into Spanish.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

Maternity unit of a tertiary level hospital in Spain.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 182 woman who gave birth before 37 weeks of gestation.

METHODS

The instrument was translated and back translated. The P-BESS was tested for face validity and construct validity by carrying out an exploratory/confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was estimated from the internal consistency, with the Cronbach's alpha (α), and the test-retest, with the  intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).

FINDINGS

The principal component analysis revealed the presence of three factors with eigenvalues greater than 1, explaining a total variance of 66.6%. A subsequent varimax rotation revealed the presence of strong loadings on each of the three components. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed, offering the model a very good fit to the data: chi-square was χ²_(df=149)=362.727 (p = 0.000); the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.089; the normed fix index (NFI )= 0.852 and the comparative fit index (CFI)=0.905. The total scale and subscales had good reliability with all Cronbach´s alpha above the acceptable level of 0.7. The total ICC was 0.994 (CI 95%, 0.988-0.997).

CONCLUSIONS

The Spanish version of P-BESS appears to be a robust, valid and reliable instrument for assessing satisfaction with care during preterm birth.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

the instrument provides a more comprehensive understanding of this complex experience. It allows the detection of areas of intervention in order to empower strategies to cope with preterm births and to maximise feelings of self-confidence and control.
