Phenomenological Study of Women's Experiences of Neonatal Transport After Childbirth in Korea

OBJECTIVE

To explore the experiences of women in Korea who were separated from their newborns when they were transported to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to receive treatment.

DESIGN

Phenomenological.

SETTING

A university hospital with approximately 600 beds in Seoul, Korea.

PARTICIPANTS

Women who experienced neonatal transport after childbirth from March to May 2021 (N = 9).

METHODS

We collected data through individual in-depth interviews and analyzed them using Colaizzi's procedure.

RESULTS

We extracted four overarching themes that represented the experiences of participants: Outsider Left Alone, Enduring in a Different World, The Lost Starting Line, and Running Together.

CONCLUSION

Our findings captured the unique experiences of women whose newborns were transported from the hospitals where they were born to NICUs at other hospitals to receive treatment. It is necessary to develop and apply tailored nursing interventions, such as assessment and support for postpartum blues or depression, to ensure that postnatal care and healthy maternal transition are not hindered.

Potential of existing online 24-h dietary recall tools for national dietary surveys

OBJECTIVE

To describe existing online, 24-h dietary recall (24-h DR) tools in terms of functionalities and ability to tackle challenges encountered during national dietary surveys, such as maximising response rates and collecting high-quality data from a representative sample of the population, while minimising the cost and response burden.

DESIGN

A search (from 2000 to 2019) was conducted in peer-reviewed and grey literature. For each tool, information on functionalities, validation and user usability studies, and potential adaptability for integration into a new context was collected.

SETTING

Not country-specific.

PARTICIPANTS

General population.

RESULTS

Eighteen online 24-h DR tools were identified. Most were developed in Europe, for children ≥10 years old and/or for adults. Eight followed the five multiple-pass steps but used various methodologies and features. Almost all tools (except three) validated their nutrient intake estimates, but with high heterogeneity in methodologies. User usability was not always assessed, and rarely by applying real-time methods. For researchers, eight tools developed a web platform to manage the survey and five appeared to be easily adaptable to a new context.

CONCLUSIONS

Among the eighteen online 24-h DR tools identified, the best candidates to be used in national dietary surveys should be those that were validated for their intake estimates, had confirmed user and researcher usability, and seemed sufficiently flexible to be adapted to new contexts. Regardless of the tool, adaptation to another context will still require time and funding, and this is probably the most challenging step.

Stakeholders' Views on Mobile Applications to Deliver Infant and Toddler Feeding Education to Latina Mothers of Low Socioeconomic Status

Infant- and toddler-feeding (ITF) practices are critical to long-term health and chronic disease prevention. Using mobile applications (apps) to promote desirable ITF practices shows promise for overcoming challenges of in-person education. However, the viability of ITF apps for Latina mothers of low-socioeconomic status (SES) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to characterize stakeholders' views on Latina mothers' capability, motivation, and barriers to using ITF apps. New York City-based health professionals who frequently engage with Latina mothers of low SES completed in-depth interviews. Directed content analysis was used to identify themes through theoretical and inductive codes. Participants included dietitians, nutrition educators, and physicians (n = 17). The following themes were identified: (1) Most Latina mothers of low-SES are tech-savvy (i.e., high capability and experience using smartphones and apps); (2) Apps are an appealing way to deliver ITF education; (3) There are challenges to using apps that must be carefully considered for ITF education development. Overall, ITF apps are a viable option as skills and use appear high among Latina mothers. Key considerations for app development include targeted app promotion; detailed instructions for obtaining and using app; more visuals, less text for low literacy and multiple dialects; making key features available offline.

A mixed-methods investigation of women's experiences seeking pregnancy-related online nutrition information

BACKGROUND

The objective of this study was to describe women's processes for finding pregnancy-related nutrition information, their experiences seeking this information online and their ideas for improving internet sources of this information.

METHODS

In total, 97 pregnant women completed an online quantitative questionnaire and 10 primiparous pregnant women completed semi-structured telephone interviews. Questionnaires and interviews asked participants to describe sources of pregnancy-related nutrition information; time of seeking; processes of searching online; experiences searching online; ideas for improving information found online. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi square tests; interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Nearly all (96%) survey participants sought nutrition information online. Information was most commonly sought during the first trimester of pregnancy. Motivators for using the internet included convenience and lack of support from health care providers. Barriers to using online information included lack of trust, difficulty finding information and worry. Women adapted the information they found online to meet their needs and reported making positive changes to their diets.

CONCLUSIONS

The internet is a key source of prenatal nutrition information that women report using to make positive dietary changes. Women would benefit from improved access to trustworthy internet sources, increased availability of information on different diets and health conditions, and increased support from health care providers.
