Abstract
Our study aims to describe the status of workplace violence against medical students during clinical practice, which consists of its prevalence, types, perpetrators, students' responses and influences on them, reasons for workplace violence and to determine some relevant factors of this issue through both quantitative questionnaire and qualitative interview. A descriptive cross-sectional study with mixed methods was conducted on 320 students from the second-year to the sixth-year classes at Hanoi Medical University from August 2022 to February 2023. The questionnaire was based on the WHO questionnaire survey 'Workplace violence in the health sector - country case studies research instruments - Geneva 2003'. 10 students from quantitative research who completed the questionnaire, experienced at least one type of workplace violence and consented to continue taking part in the research were chosen for in-depth interviews. The prevalence of students witnessing and/or experiencing workplace violence was 35.6% and 19.4% of the sample population had experienced at least one kind of workplace violence. Medical staff were the most common perpetrators. 86.8% of students who were exposed to workplace violence did not report the incidents for a variety of reasons. The major reasons leading to workplace violence related to patients, patients' relatives and students, among which the first-ranked ones were the patients' education level and their unsatisfied expectations. Some relevant factors to workplace violence against medical students were determined by quantitative analysis such as students' grade (OR = 3.09) and region (OR = 3.31) and were explored additionally by qualitative interview such as the student management of the instructors, students' personality, attitude and appearance as well as hospital environment. Based on the research findings, establishing prevention methods, which require action from both individuals (students, medical staff) and organizations (universities, hospitals) is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychosocial traumatisation associated with giving birth, can occur in those present with the woman giving birth, a phenomenon known as vicarious trauma. It has been identified that there are currently no interventions available for midwifery students who have experienced vicarious trauma following difficult birth experiences. OBJECTIVE To explore whether the counselling intervention developed by Gamble et al. (2005), can be adapted for midwifery students to be appropriately and feasibly used as a counselling intervention with peers who have experienced midwifery practice-related vicarious trauma. DESIGN Interpretive descriptive methodology. SETTING This study was set at two Australian universities from which pre-registration midwifery courses are delivered. PARTICIPANTS The work of reviewing the original tool and adapting it for use by and with midwifery students associated with this project was conducted by a key stakeholder group of seven representative midwifery students and five midwifery academics. METHODS Ethics were approved. Data were collected via one face to face and two online conversations using the Microsoft Teams™ platform. Reflexive Thematic analysis were applied to revise the tool following each round of data collection and to finalise the adaptation of the intervention for its new intended purpose. RESULTS The Midwifery Student Peer Debriefing Tool is presented as a six-step intervention that guides the midwifery student through a process of debriefing with their peer. The feasibility of the tool resulted in an overarching theme labelled "I want this to mean something" and captures the therapeutic power of peer debriefing toward a meaningful outcome that fostered growth, and a deeper understanding of the profession. CONCLUSION Vicarious trauma is widely recognised as a core reason for midwives and midwifery students leaving the workforce. The peer debriefing tool helps midwifery students move through the process of recovering from adversity but also fostered learnings about midwifery practice and the profession.

Abstract
Background In Morocco, despite various initiatives to improve the quality of reproductive healthcare, the indicators remain unfavorable. To strengthen the skills of midwives and support the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5 by 2030, Morocco has developed and implemented a competency-based training framework. However, there is a lack of information on the successful implementation of this program and its impact on the quality of student midwives' preparation for practice. Objective This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding and explore the barriers affecting the development of clinical learning skills among midwifery students and newly qualified midwives. Methods This study employed a descriptive, exploratory qualitative approach. Data were collected through nine focus group discussions with 30 midwifery students and 24 newly graduated midwives between April and June 2023 from six higher education institutions in northern and central Morocco. Inductive content analysis was used to analyze the transcribed discussions. Results The barriers varied between locations. Overall, the internship design was inadequate, and the clinical environment was insufficient. Participants highlighted limited opportunities to experience the full range of midwifery skills. However, most midwifery students and new graduates had deficient competencies in managing high-risk situations and emergencies. Conclusion This work provides an overview of the nature and extent of the challenges faced by many student midwives in Morocco, resulting in newly graduated midwives being poorly prepared for the full range of midwifery practice. These findings can inform various initiatives to strengthen midwifery education at the global, regional, and national levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent decades, increased midwifery university places have been offered to address midwifery workforce shortages. As a result, more graduate midwives entered the workforce, in turn leading to more midwifery students precepted by novice midwives when on professional placement. It is not known whether this more junior midwifery workforce impacts student experience. AIMS To explore undergraduate midwifery students' experiences with novice and expert midwifery preceptors, and to identify the benefits and challenges of working with novice and expert preceptors, from the perspective of undergraduate student midwives. METHOD This study used a qualitative descriptive approach. Nineteen third/fourth-year Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) students attended six focus groups (ranging from 2 to 5 participants). Data were analysed thematically. RESULTS Three overarching themes were identified: 'Building relationships'; 'Teaching and learning'; and 'Improvements to professional placement'. Benefits and challenges existed with both novice and expert preceptors. Importantly, feeling welcomed and receiving critical feedback were identified. CONCLUSION The student/preceptor relationship is based upon feeling welcomed, and relatability, and is developed more easily with novice preceptors. Expert preceptors provide insightful and valuable feedback and are more able to actively teach. Novice preceptors' consolidation of practice can impact student learning opportunities. Including students in decision-making aids development of critical thinking. Allocation practices which address student learning needs will improve the student professional practice experience. Midwifery students benefit from working with midwifery preceptors of all experience levels. Translating the findings from this project into preceptorship training programs for midwives will improve student satisfaction and outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Workplace violence (WPV) poses a significant occupational hazard for nurses. The efficacy of current education and training programs in mitigating WPV incidence among nurses remains uncertain, possibly due to insufficient consideration of clinical contexts and nurses' specific needs. Therefore, this study developed a WPV prevention strategy based on the actual requirements of clinical nurses and situational prevention theory and aimed to explore its application effects. METHODS Under the guidance of situational prevention theory, a WPV prevention strategy for nurses was constructed through literature review, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion. This study adopted a self-controlled research design, and trained 130 nurses selected from a comprehensive tertiary grade A hospital in Suzhou in this WPV prevention strategy. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, including the revised WPV questionnaire, WPV severity grading scale, and hospital WPV coping resources scale. The WPV incidence, severity, and WPV coping resource scores of nurses were collected before the intervention, as well as at 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months after training. RESULTS The WPV prevention strategy comprised 11 prevention plans based on 11 high-risk situational elements of WPV. Each prevention plan included the WPV prevention flowchart, treatment principle, and communication strategy. The strategy demonstrated excellent feasibility and practicality. Following the intervention, the overall incidence of WPV among nurses significantly decreased from 63.85% (baseline) to 46.15% (9 months after training) (P < 0.05). After the training, the severity of psychological violence (Wald χ² = 20.066, P < 0.001) and physical violence (Wald χ² = 9.100, P = 0.028) reported by nurses decreased compared to the baseline (P < 0.05). Moreover, the overall WPV coping resource score significantly increased from [66.50 (57.00, 77.25) points] (baseline) to [80.00 (68.00, 97.25) points] (9 months after training) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The described WPV prevention strategy, grounded in situational prevention theory and tailored to the needs of clinical nurses, effectively reduced WPV incidence, mitigated its severity, and enhanced nurses' WPV coping resources. This approach offered new avenues for nurses in the prevention of WPV.

Abstract
Purpose To analyze the key factors related to workplace vertical violence among nursing interns in China and to propose strategies to improve the nursing practice environment. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method to analyze the key factors and significance of workplace vertical violence for nursing interns. The data were obtained by administering a workplace vertical violence survey, designed specifically for this study, to 120 nursing interns at a tertiary general hospital in Zhejiang Province, China. Results The results demonstrated that the variables "I was ordered to do something beyond my ability and lacked guidance (C3)," "Errors in work have been repeatedly emphasized, spread, or exaggerated (C8)," "I was unjustly criticized (C9)," "I was withheld or blocked information purposefully (C1)," and "I was belittled at work (C2)" were the most crucial variables for determining the presence of workplace vertical violence of nursing interns. Moreover, they are priority improvement variables. Conclusion Managers must prioritize the use of relevant resources during internships to minimize false reinforcement and unfair criticism. Efforts should focus on improving information sharing, emphasizing the role of nursing interns in clinical work, providing better guidance when arranging for nursing interns to do work that exceeds their capacity, reducing workplace vertical violence, and improving nursing intern practice environments.

Abstract
AIMS To systematically identify, appraise and synthesise qualitative studies investigating Registered Nurse students' (RNS) experiences of workplace violence (WPV) while on clinical placement. It is expected that the literature review findings will guide the development of targeted programs and policies to address WPV against RNS. BACKGROUND WPV affects RNS during clinical placements as they are vulnerable to violence due to their limited experience and skills to challenge abusive behaviour. In this review, RNS are students enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing program to become registered nurses and exclude students who are enrolled in nursing program that does not lead to registration as a registered nurse. For example, enrolled in nursing programs and postgraduate nursing programs. RNS are chosen for their scope of practice and the training requirements. RNS reported experiencing WPV mainly from colleagues, staff, teachers, doctors and supervisors, which resulted in leaving nursing practice, impacting students' progression and healthcare systems. This review examines all types of violence RNS face irrespective of the abuser. METHODS A qualitative systematic review of existing literature was conducted through a comprehensive database search of eight databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Central and ProQuest. Furthermore, reference lists of included studies were searched to identify further research. English language qualitative primary studies of any study design were searched from inception to 6th June 2022 and included if they met the inclusion criteria. Double review process utilised from screening until data synthesis reported according to PRISMA. JBI critical appraisal tools were used to assess the studies, and data extraction utilised JBI QARI tool and screened for credibility and confidence in findings. RESULTS A total of 18 studies met the inclusion criteria, and the studies were conducted in nine countries. Five main themes relating to RNS experiences of WPV while on clinical placement were identified, including: 'Types of workplace violence', 'Perpetrators', 'Causes', 'Consequences' and 'Management of workplace violence'. CONCLUSIONS This qualitative systematic review provides new and significant knowledge in understanding the phenomenon of WPV experienced by RNS while on clinical placement. RELATIVE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This review highlights the unwillingness of RNS to reach out to instructors or clinical placement leaders in many situations and identifies avenues of support and awareness that are crucial to empower and enabling students to seek support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current study was conducted with the aim of explaining domains of clinical competence in undergraduate midwifery students so that it addresses the challenges in midwifery curriculum and improving clinical assessment methods in Iranian undergraduate midwifery students. METHODS Qualitative approach and conventional content analysis were used in the design of the present study. The research setting included midwifery and nursing schools and hospitals and health centers affiliated to Tehran and Guilan universities of medical sciences in Iran. The target population consisted of undergraduate midwifery students in the fourth to eighth semesters of school, midwives working in hospitals and health centers, midwifery faculty members, and obstetricians. The participants were selected through purposive maximum variation sampling, which continued until data saturation. After in-depth semi-structured interviews, the content of the interviews was analyzed according to the steps proposed by Zhang & Wildemuth. RESULTS Twenty-four people participated in this study, including seven midwifery students, seven midwives, nine midwifery and reproductive and sexual health faculty members, and one obstetrician. The participants were aged 20-56 years and their mean age was 39.75 years. Their level of education varied from midwifery student to PhD. The mean work experience of the participants was 13.62 years and the mean duration of the interviews was 48 min. The analysis of the data obtained from the experiences of the participants led to the formation of the four categories of ethical and professional function in midwifery, holistic midwifery care, effective interaction, and personal and professional development, along with ten subcategories. CONCLUSION The findings of the present study showed that clinical competence in midwifery students involves different domains that correspond well overall to the general definitions of clinical competence in different sources. These findings can be used as a basis for the design and psychometric assessment of a clinical competence assessment tool for undergraduate midwifery students.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study is to identify and map what is known about workplace violence involving midwives in Australia and New Zealand. BACKGROUND Research from the United Kingdom demonstrates that workplace violence within maternity services is a pervasive issue with significant and wide-ranging clinical, individual and organisational consequences. To date, little is known about this issue within Australian and New Zealand maternity services. EVALUATION A scoping review, guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework, was conducted. Reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Just one identified study aimed to explore midwives' experiences of workplace violence. A further nine arrived at related results or themes. KEY ISSUES Workplace violence is present in a variety of forms across maternity services in Australia and New Zealand. Its prevalence is, however, yet to be understood. Workplace violence causes physical and mental health issues for midwives, premature workforce attrition, and jeopardizes the quality and safety of maternity care. CONCLUSIONS Workplace violence has been acknowledged as one of the key contributing factors towards premature attrition from the midwifery profession, with new graduate midwives most likely to leave. With the midwifery workforce ageing and evidence of serious clinical implications emerging, workplace violence needs urgent research and organisational attention. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Workplace violence is a key contributing factor towards recruitment and retention challenges for managers. To help tackle this, managers have a key role to play in identifying and effectively addressing workplace violence by acting as positive role models, taking a zero-tolerance approach and fostering collegial relationships. Managers, holding key clinical leadership positions, are pivotal to ensuring all complaints raised are handled with transparency and consistency regardless of one's position within the clinical hierarchy and organisational structure.

Abstract
Background Workplace bullying and violence (WBV) are well-documented issues in the midwifery profession. Negative workplace culture, conflict, and bullying are the most common forms of workplace violence experienced by midwives. Workplace violence increases the risk of midwives experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, psychological trauma, poor mental health, absenteeism, loss of passion for the midwifery profession, job dissatisfaction, and poor job retention. Midwifery students describe workplace violence in the form of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse, and bullying. Therefore, there is a justification to develop conflict resolution strategies and resilience in midwifery students prior to graduation. Objective Our aim is to develop and facilitate a bespoke education program for South Australian midwifery students to enable them to develop skills in conflict resolution, build resilience, and identify self-care strategies. Methods This study will undertake a preparatory phase summarizing the body of literature on midwifery students’ knowledge, understanding, and experiences of WBV. Following this, a 3-phase sequential mixed methods research design study will be undertaken. In Phase 1, quantitative data will be collected via a semistructured questionnaire and a validated conflict measurement tool, before and after attending an education workshop, and will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results from Phase 1 will inform and guide the development of an interview schedule for Phase 2. In Phase 2, qualitative data will be gathered by facilitating one-to-one interviews and a thematic analysis will be undertaken to gain a deeper understanding of midwifery students’ experiences of WBV. In Phase 3, data integration using triangulation will be undertaken and meta-inferences will be developed via the integration of results and findings from Phases 1 and 2. Results The preparatory phase will commence in October 2021. Phase 1 will commence in 2022 with analysis of pre- and posteducation results anticipated to be completed by December 2022. Phase 2 will be developed from findings of the preparatory phase and results of Phase 1. An interpretation of verbatim interview transcripts is estimated to be undertaken by April 2023. Phase 3 of the study is expected to commence in May 2023, and this will involve the analysis of collective evidence gathered from Phases 1 and 2. The anticipated completion date for the study is December 2023. Conclusions The outcomes of this research will provide insights into the prevalence and impact of WBV experienced by midwifery students. The findings of the research will report on levels of knowledge, skills, and confidence, and will assess the impact of a bespoke conflict resolution and resilience education workshop for midwifery students in managing WBV. Abstract
PROBLEM Bullying in the midwifery profession has been documented and the problem is now known to extend to the poor treatment of midwifery students. In nursing, research has shown that bullying in the clinical workplace can adversely impact on quality of care. To date, no research has explored whether the bullying of midwifery students has secondary impacts on the experiences and care of mothers, babies, and their support persons. AIM To examine how midwifery students, who self-identify as having been bullied, perceive the repercussions on women and their families. METHODS This qualitative descriptive study explored 120 Australian and United Kingdom (UK) based midwifery students. Data were collected using an anonymous online qualitative survey and were thematically analysed. FINDINGS The findings suggest that the bullying of midwifery students impacts women and their families in a number of ways. Midwifery students perceive that mothers and babies are frequently implicated either directly or indirectly in the enactment of bullying. This can impact their safety, fractures relationships, and impairs the women's confidence in the student and the profession. Students additionally reported that women and/or their support persons can feel compelled to step in to defend and protect the student. CONCLUSIONS The bullying of midwifery students is perceived to place women at risk, in uncomfortable situations, damage rapport and undermines their confidence in students and the profession. This also impacts adversely on the student's ability to provide women centred care as they lose confidence in front of the woman and her family when they are bullied by registered midwives.

Abstract
The context within which midwifery students are professionally socialised is thought to impact upon the development of their sense of belongingness, their attitudes and values, and their commitment to the midwifery profession. Negative forms of socialisation are known to lead to undesirable outcomes including desensitisation about humanistic needs. This has potential to extend to an acceptance of workplace bullying and unfair treatment of others, including midwifery students whilst on clinical placement. This study aimed to explore how the social culture of the maternity setting influences midwifery students' experiences of being bullied whilst on clinical placement. One hundred and twenty midwifery students from Australia and the United Kingdom completed a qualitative online survey and the data was thematically analysed. One main overarching theme and four sub themes were identified. These were: 'the organisational culture of acceptance: "in front of"', 'brazen expression', 'group buy-in', 'suppression of dissent', and 'collateral damage'. Each of these factors enabled replication of the problem and led to perpetuation of the bullying cycle. This study illuminated that an entrenched culture of acceptance exists which impacts the students educational experience, the care received by mothers and babies, and the reputation of the midwifery profession.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstetric violence is a worldwide public health problem, which seems greater in Spain. As no studies were found that identify the most representative healthcare professionals, times, and areas involved in obstetric violence, the objective of this work was to study at what time of maternity, with which professionals, and in what areas women identified obstetric violence. METHODS This descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was performed from January 2018 to June 2019. The main variables were the area (hospital, primary care, both), the time (pregnancy, birth, puerperium), and the professionals attending to women. RESULTS Our sample comprised 17,541 participants. The area identified with the most obstetric violence for the different studied variables was hospitals. Women identified more obstetric violence at time of birth. Findings such as lack of information and informed consent (74.2%), and criticism of infantile behavior and treatment (87.6%), stood out. The main identified healthcare professionals were midwives and gynecologists, and "other" professionals repeatedly appeared. CONCLUSIONS Having identified the professionals, times, and areas of most obstetric violence in Spain, it seems necessary to reflect on not only the Spanish National Health System's structure and management but also on healthcare professionals' training.
