Abstract
Owing to the unique quantum size effect and surface effect, gold-based nanomaterials (GNMs) are promising for pathogen detection and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. This review summarizes recent research on GNMs as sensors for detecting pathogens and as tools for their elimination. Firstly, the need for pathogen detection is briefly introduced with an overview of the physicochemical properties of gold nanomaterials. And then strategies for the application of GNMs in pathogen detection are discussed. Colorimetric, fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques, dark-field microscopy detection and electrochemical methods can enable efficient, sensitive, and specific pathogen detection. The third section describes the antimicrobial applications of GNMs. They can be used for antimicrobial agent delivery and photothermal conversion and can act synergistically with photosensitizers to achieve the precise killing of pathogens. In addition, GNMs are promising for integrated pathogen detection and treatment; for example, combinations of colorimetric or SERS detection with photothermal sterilization have been demonstrated. Finally, future outlooks for the applications of GNMs in pathogen detection and treatment are summarized.

Abstract
Even though it is very important, it is still rather difficult to detect minuscule levels of the bacterial pathogen in clinical practice, such as samples from dental implants. We construct here an efficient scaffold for label-free and sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) detection. The precise recognition of target bacteria by the detection scaffold leads to the self-assembly of Chain i and DNAzyme based cleavage of Chain iii. In detail, active DNAzyme conformation is formed based on the hybridization of Chain iii and Chain ii, and a nicking site is generated in Chain iii, making it possible to form a self-primer in Chain i. With the assistance of DNA polymerase, a single-strand DNA chain is added to the 3' terminal of Chain i, in which process the bacteria is released for the complex to bind with a next detection scaffold, forming a signal recycle. Following DNAzyme-based cleavage, the liberated sequences unroll MB and release G-rich sequences that can specifically bind with the fluorescent dye Thioflavin T (ThT), initiating ThT's fluorescence signal production. The approach demonstrates a wide detection range of 102 CFU/mL and 106 CFU/mL with a low limit of detection of 45 CFU/mL based on the developed detection scaffold, offering good prospects in the diagnosis of bacterial illnesses.

Abstract
In this work, aptamers against E. coli with better performance were obtained via cell systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (cell-SELEX) and dissociation constants (Kd) of aptamers were estimated to range from 133.87 to 199.44 nM. Furthermore, the selected aptamer was employed for label-free colorimetric detection of E. coli using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce color development. This colorimetric apta-assay started with an aptamer-bacteria binding step, and the concentration of residual aptamers after binding depended on the amount of target bacteria. Then, the amount of separated residual aptamers determined the degree of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-inhibited catalytic activity of AuNPs, which resulted in a color change from dark blue to light blue. Owing to the excellent peroxidase activity of AuNPs, they could emit strong visible color intensity in less than 1 minute to improve visual detection sensitivity. Under optimized conditions, the sensitivity of detection was 5 × 103 CFU mL-1 visually and 75 CFU mL-1 using the UV-vis spectrum with a linear range from 5 × 102 to 1 × 106 CFU mL-1. And it had shown a good recovery rate in real samples of water, juice and milk compared with classical counting methods.

Abstract
Recent years have witnessed an exponential increase in the research on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based colorimetric sensors to revolutionize point-of-use sensing devices. Hence, this review is compiled focused on current progress in the design and performance parameters of AuNPs-based sensors. The review begins with the characteristics of AuNPs, followed by a brief explanation of synthesis and functionalization methods. Then, the mechanisms of AuNPs-based sensors are comprehensively explained in two broad categories based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) characteristics of AuNPs and their peroxidase-like catalytic properties (nanozyme). SPR-based colorimetric sensors further categorize into aggregation, anti-aggregation, etching, growth-mediated, and accumulation-based methods depending on their sensing mechanisms. On the other hand, peroxidase activity-based colorimetric sensors are divided into two methods based on the expression or inhibition of peroxidase-like activity. Next, the analytes in environmental and food samples are classified as inorganic, organic, and biological pollutants, and recent progress in detection of these analytes are reviewed in detail. Finally, conclusions are provided, and future directions are highlighted. Improving the sensitivity, reproducibility, multiplexing capabilities, and cost-effectiveness for colorimetric detection of various analytes in environment and food matrices will have significant impact on fast testing of hazardous substances, hence reducing the pollution load in environment as well as rendering food contamination to ensure food safety.

Abstract
Microorganisms in food do harms to human. They can cause serious adverse reactions and sometimes even death. So it is an urgent matter to find an effective method to control them. The research of intelligent- biosensor packaging is in the ascendant in recent years, which is mainly promoted by reflecting on food safety and reducing resource waste. Intelligent biosensor-packaging is an instant and efficient intelligent packaging technology, which can directly and scientifically manifest the quality of food without complex operation. In this review, the purposes of providing relevant information on intelligent biosensor-packaging are reviewed, such as types of biosensors for monitoring foodborne microorganism, the suitable material for intelligent biosensor-packaging and design and fabrication of intelligent biosensor-packaging. The potential of intelligent biosensor-packaging in the detection of foodborne microorganisms is emphasized. The challenges and directions of the intelligent biosensor-packaging in the detection of foodborne pathogens are discussed. With the development of science and technology in the future, the intelligent biosensor-packaging should be commercialized in a real sense. And it is expected that commercial products can be manufactured in the future, which will provide a far-reaching approach in food safety and food prevention. HighlightsSeveral biosensors are suitable for the detection of food microorganisms.Plastic polymer is an excellent choice for the construction of intelligent biosensor packaging.Design and fabrication can lay the foundation for intelligent-biosensor packaging.Intelligent biosensor-packaging can realize fast and real-time detection of microorganisms in food.

Abstract
Rapid qualitative and quantitative detection of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) takes an important role in ensuring food safety. Herein, a colorimetric assay aptasensor for S. typhimurium utilizing intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles embedded spherical covalent organic framework and the affinity and specificity of S. typhimurium-aptamer has been explored. This aptasensor can capture the S. typhimurium via the selective binding effect of aptamer, and the catalytically active sites were shielded. As a result, the colorimetric signals of the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine-H2O2 system were turned off. Under optimum conditions, the aptasensor gave a linear response over the range of 10 to 107 CFU/mL for S. typhimurium. The detection limit of 7 CFU/mL was obtained within 45 min and was effectively applied to detect S. typhimurium in milk and lake water samples with recoveries in the range from 96.4 to 101.0%. More importantly, combined with a self-developed smartphone-based image analysis system, the proposed aptasensor can be used for point-of-care testing applications.

Abstract
Food-borne diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria are one of the serious factors affecting human health. However, the most commonly used detection methods for pathogenic bacteria not only require expensive instruments, but also take a long time due to the complicated and cumbersome detection process. Therefore, the development of a fast, simple, and low-cost detection method for pathogenic bacteria is crucial for food safety and human health. In this work, based on the high binding ability of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) and polymyxin B (PMB) to bacteria, combined with magnetic separation technology, a new enzyme-free colorimetric strategy was constructed to achieve visual detection of Gram-negative bacteria in complex samples. The sensor system was divided into the following two parts: a colorimetric signal amplification nanoprobe, which was modified with AMP to enable effective binding of the colorimetric probe to the surface of bacteria, and a PMB-modified magnetic nanobead (MNB), which was used as the capture and enrichment unit of Gram-negative bacteria, as a result of which PMB could effectively distinguish Gram-negative bacteria from Gram-positive bacteria. Under optimized conditions, the detection limit of the method for Gram-negative bacteria (e.g. E. coli (G-)) was as low as 10 CFU/mL, and it was successfully applied to complex real samples. In addition, the developed colorimetric sensor offered advantages, such as fast response, less time consumption, high sensitivity, and low cost. It can be expected to become a new diagnostic tool for on-site detection of pathogenic bacteria in remote areas.

Abstract
Protective equipment for detecting bacterial contamination has been in high demand with increasing interest in public health and hygiene. Herein, a fiber-based visually indicating bacteria sensor (VIBS) embedded with iodonitrotetrazolium chloride is developed for the general purpose of detecting live bacteria, and its chromogenic effectiveness is investigated for Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Micrococcus luteus. The developed color intensity is measured by the light absorption coefficient to the scattering coefficient (K/S) based on the Kubelka-Munk equation, and the colorimetric sensitivities of different membranes are examined by calculating the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ). The results demonstrate that the interactions between VIBS and bacteria depend on the wetting properties of membranes. A hydrophobic membrane shows excessive interactions at high concentrations of Gram-negative E. coli bacteria, whose cell membrane is lipophilic. The membrane blended with hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers displays linear colorimetric responses for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria strains, demonstrating a reliable sensing capability in the range of the tested bacteria concentration. This study is significant in that explorative experimentations are performed to conceive a proof of concept of a fiber-based bacteria sensor, which is readily applicable in various fields where bacteria pose a threat.

Abstract
A plasma colorimetric aptasensor was developed for rapid determination of chloramphenicol (CAP) in honey on site. Herein, cage gold shell@core nanoparticles (Au@AuNPs) were synthesized to enhance signal response and broaden the linear range. In addition, aptamer-based cascade hybridization chain reaction (cHCR), consisting of HP1, HP2, HP3, and HP4, was also designed for signal amplification and specific analysis. In this assay, HP1 and HP4 were immobilized on the surface of cage Au@AuNPs. In the presence of CAP, cHCR was triggered, and frond-like DNA products were formed, which made the distance among the cage Au@AuNPs closer and the system color changed from red to deep purple. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were carried out according to color changes and UV-Vis spectra. Under the optimized conditions, the wavelength of UV-Vis absorption peak exhibited a good linear relationship with CAP concentration in the range of 5.0 to 500 nmol/L with the detection limit of 1.2 nmol/L (S/N = 3). This aptasensor also showed good specificity for CAP detection compared with other antibiotics similar to the target analyte. Furthermore, the colorimetric aptasensor was successfully applied to the detection of CAP in honey with recoveries of 88.0-107.6%. This cHCR-based aptasensing for CAP possesses high sensitivity, good selectivity, low cost and excellent stability, and could be extended to detect a wide variety of other small molecular analytes, nucleic acids or proteins. Therefore, the versatile method might become a potential alternative tool in food analysis and environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Pathogenic bacteria are primarily kinds of detrimental agents that cause mankind illness via contaminated food with traits of multiple types, universality, and low content. In view of the detection demands for rapidity, aptamer recognition factors emerged as a substitution for antibodies, which are short single strands of nucleic acid selected via in vitro. They display certain superiorities over antibodies, such as preferable stability, liable modification, and cost-efficiency. Taking advantage of the situation, numerous aptamers against pathogenic bacteria have been successfully selected and applied, yet there are still restrictions on commercial availability. In this review, the strategies/approaches to key sections in pathogen aptamers SELEX and post-SELEX are summarized and sorted out. Recently, optical, electrochemical, and piezoelectric aptamer-based assays or sensors dedicated to pathogen detection have been critically reviewed. Ultimately, the existing challenges and future trends in this field are proposed to further promote development prospects.

Abstract
Waterborne bacterial infection is a health threat worldwide, making accurate and timely bacteria detection crucial to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks. Inspired by the intrinsic capability of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) in recognizing the pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), a visual biosensor is developed here for the on-site detection of both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. The biosensor was synthesized by immobilization of the MBL protein onto the blue carboxyl-functionalized polystyrene microparticles (PSM), which is then used in a two-step assay to detect bacterial cells in water samples. The first step involved a 20 min incubation following the MBL-PSM and calcium chloride solution addition to the samples. The second step was to add ethanol to the resultant blue mixture and observe the color change with the naked eye after 15 min. The biosensor had a binary (all-or-none) response, which in the presence of bacterial cells kept its blue color, while in their absence the color changed from blue to colorless. Testing the water samples spiked with four Gram-negative bacteria including Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and two Gram-positive bacteria of Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus showed that the biosensor could detect all tested bacteria with a concentration as low as 101.5 CFU/ml. The performance of biosensor using the water samples from a water treatment plant also confirmed its capability to detect the pathogens in real-life water samples without the need for instrumentation.

Abstract
Biosensors need to meet the rising food industry demand for sensitive, selective, safe, and fast food safety quality control. Disposable colorimetric sensors based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and localized surface plasmon resonance are low-cost and easy-to-perform devices intended for rapid point-of-need measurements. Recent studies demonstrate various facile and versatile AuNPs-based analytical platforms for the detection of bacteria and their toxins in milk, meat, and other foods. In this review, we introduce the general characteristics and mechanisms of AuNPs calorimetric biosensors, and highlight optimizations needed to strengthen and improve the quality of devices for their application in food matrices.

Abstract
Pathogenic bacteria have become a huge threat to social health and economy for their frighteningly infectious and lethal capacity. It is quite important to make a diagnosis in advance to prevent infection or allow a rapid treatment after infection. Noble metal nanoparticles, due to their unique physicochemical properties, especially optical properties, have drawn a great attention during the past decades and have been widely applied into all kinds of fields related to human health. By utilizing these noble metal nanoparticles, optical diagnosis platforms towards pathogenic bacteria have emerged continually, providing highly sensitive, selective, and particularly facile detection tools for clinic or point-of-care diagnosis. This review summarizes the recent development in this field. It begins with a brief introduction of pathogenic bacteria and noble metal nanoparticles. And then, optical detection methods are systematically discussed in three distinct aspects. In addition to these proof-of-concept methods, corresponding algorithms and point-of-care detection devices are also described. Finally, the review ends up with subjective views on present limitations and some appropriate advice for future research directions.
