Competitive hydrogenation/dehalogenation of halogenoarenes with surfactant-stabilized aqueous suspensions of rhodium and palladium colloids: A major effect of the metal nature

Single-ion chelation strategy for synthesis of monodisperse Pd nanoparticles anchored in MOF-808 for highly efficient hydrogenation and cascade reactions

Ultrafine Pd nanoparticles are prepared using a single-ion precursor on a MOF-808 carrier. The ligand 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid (Pza) is dispersed in porous MOF-808 via grafting on formic acid sites, and thus Pd²⁺ ions are chelated by Pza to form a new single-ion precursor Pd@MOF-808-Pza. Then a Pd-nano@MOF-808-Pza catalyst is prepared by direct reduction of this precursor using NaBH₄. Material characterization reveals the homogeneous dispersion of 3-6 nm Pd nanoparticles within the MOF-808 matrix. Pd-nano@MOF-808-Pza exhibits excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of unsaturated nitrogen-containing compounds, and other typical reactions, such as the Knoevenagel condensation, Suzuki/Heck cross-coupling, and hydrogen tandem reactions. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out to elucidate the chelation of Pd²⁺ ions by Pza on MOF-808 and propose mechanisms of hydrogenation reactions. This work provides an effective reduction catalyst, and more importantly, a single-ion chelation strategy for design and synthesis of metal supported catalysts.

A Convenient and Stable Heterogeneous Nickel Catalyst for Hydrodehalogenation of Aryl Halides Using Molecular Hydrogen

Hydrodehalogenation is an effective strategy for transforming persistent and potentially toxic organohalides into their more benign congeners. Common methods utilize Pd/C or Raney-nickel as catalysts, which are either expensive or have safety concerns. In this study, a nickel-based catalyst supported on titania (Ni-phen@TiO2 -800) is used as a safe alternative to pyrophoric Raney-nickel. The catalyst is prepared in a straightforward fashion by deposition of nickel(II)/1,10-phenanthroline on titania, followed by pyrolysis. The catalytic material, which was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS, consists of nickel nanoparticles covered with N-doped carbon layers. By using design of experiments (DoE), this nanostructured catalyst is found to be proficient for the facile and selective hydrodehalogenation of a diverse range of substrates bearing C-I, C-Br, or C-Cl bonds (>30 examples). The practicality of this catalyst system is demonstrated by the dehalogenation of environmentally hazardous and polyhalogenated substrates atrazine, tetrabromobisphenol A, tetrachlorobenzene, and a polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).

Water-Soluble Noble Metal Nanoparticle Catalysts Capped with Small Organic Molecules for Organic Transformations in Water

This article recaps a variety of interesting catalytic studies based on solubilized and freely movable noble metal nanoparticle catalysts employed for organic reactions in either pure water or water-organic biphasic systems. Small organic ligand-capped metal nanoparticles are fundamentally attractive materials due to their enormous potential as a well-defined system that can provide spatial control near active catalytic sites. The nanoparticle catalysts are first grouped based on the synthetic method (direct reduction, phase transfer, and redispersion) and then again based on the type of reaction such as alkene hydrogenation, arene hydrogenation, nitroaromatic reduction, carbon-carbon coupling reactions, etc. The impacts of various ligands on the catalytic activity and selectivity of semi-heterogeneous nanoparticles in water are discussed in detail. The catalytic systems using polymers, dendrimers, and ionic liquids as supporting or protecting materials are excluded from the subject of this review.

A decennary update on applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocyclic scaffolds

Heterocycles have been found to be of much importance as several nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycle compounds exist amongst the various USFDA-approved drugs. Because of the advancement of nanotechnology, nanocatalysis has found abundant applications in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Numerous nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilized for several organic transformations, which led us to make dedicated efforts for the complete coverage of applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds reported from 2010 to 2019. Our emphasize during the coverage of catalyzed reactions of the various MNPs such as Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Si, Ti, and Zn has not only been on nanoparticles catalyzed synthetic transformations for the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds, but also provide an inherent framework for the reader to select a suitable catalytic system of interest for the synthesis of desired heterocyclic scaffold.

Comparative study on catalytic hydrodehalogenation of halogenated aromatic compounds over Pd/C and Raney Ni catalysts

Catalytic hydrodehalogenation (HDH) has proved to be an efficient approach to dispose halogenated aromatic compounds (HACs). Liquid-phase HDH of single and mixed halobenzenes/4-halophenols with H₂ over 5% Pd/C and Raney Ni catalyst are investigated and compared. For liquid-phase HDH of single HACs, hydrogenolytic scission reactivity of C-X bonds decreases in order of C-Br > C-Cl > C-I > C-F over Pd/C catalyst, and in order of C-I > C-Br > C-Cl > C-F over Raney Ni catalyst. To clarify the reason why hydrogenolytic scission reactivity of C-X bonds over Pd/C and Raney Ni catalysts exhibits different trends, liquid-phase HDH of mixed HACs over Pd/C and Raney Ni catalysts were studied, and catalysts are characterized by SEM, EDX, and XRD techniques. It was found that the high adsorption of iodoarenes on Pd/C catalyst caused the HDH reactivity of iodoarenes to be lower than that of chloroarenes and bromoarenes in the HDH of single HACs. Moreover, the adsorption of in situ produced iodine ion (I⁻) to catalyst surface would result in the decline of catalytic activity, which might be the main reason why the HDH reactivity of HACs in the presence of NaI is rather low.

Ni(0)-CMC-Na - nickel colloids in sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose: catalytic evaluation in hydrogenation reactions

A recyclable catalyst, Ni(0)-CMC-Na, composed of nickel colloids dispersed in a water soluble bioorganic polymer, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na), was synthesized by a simple procedure from readily available reagents. The catalyst thus obtained is stable and highly active in alkene hydrogenations.

Metallic Ca-Rh/C-methanol, a high-performing system for the hydrodechlorination/ring reduction of mono- and poly chlorinated aromatic substrates

We investigated the reduction of some substituted mono- and poly chlorobenzenes bearing functional groups such as methyl, methoxy, hydroxyl, and amino, under mild conditions (80 degrees C and magnetic stirring, for 2 h) using a system consisting of metallic calcium and methanol (as hydrogen donor system) and 5% wt. Rh/C (as hydrodechlorination/ring reduction catalyst). Hydrodechlorination easily took place for methoxy- and alkyl-chlorobenzenes, yielding the corresponding hydrodechlorinated compounds (57-76%) and affording as secondary reaction products the ring-reduced compounds (16-43%). Treatment of hydroxy- and amino-chlorobenzenes under the same conditions, respectively, gave corresponding hydrodechlorinated compounds (over 60%) along with the ring-reduced compounds. Results show that the reaction of substituted polychlorinated benzenes needs a longer reaction time (6 h), the transformation being nevertheless complete.

Polyhydroxylated ammonium chloride salt: a new efficient surfactant for nanoparticles stabilisation in aqueous media. Characterization and application in catalysis

A trihydroxyammonium chloride has proved to be an efficient protective agent for Rh(0) nanoparticles and the hydrogenation of arene compounds has been investigated. Significant formation of cyclohexanone in the reduction of anisole has been demonstrated.
