Sulfated fibrous ZrO2/Al2O3 core and shell nanocomposites: A novel strong acid catalyst with hierarchically macro–mesoporous nanostructure

Regioselective Friedel-Crafts Acylation Reaction Using Single Crystalline and Ultrathin Nanosheet Assembly of Scrutinyite-SnO2

Peculiar physicochemical properties of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have attracted research interest in developing new synthetic technology and exploring their potential applications in the field of catalysis. Moreover, ultrathin metal oxide nanosheets with atomic thickness exhibit abnormal surficial properties because of the unique 2D confinement effect. In this work, we present a facile and general approach for the synthesis of single crystalline and ultrathin 2D nanosheets assembly of scrutinyite-SnO₂ through a simple solvothermal method. The structural and compositional characterization using X-ray diffraction (Rietveld refinement analysis), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and so on reveal that the as-synthesized 2D nanosheets are ultrathin and single crystallized in the scrutinyite-SnO₂ phase with high purity. The ultrathin SnO₂ nanosheets show predominant growth in the [011] direction on the main surface having a thickness of ca. 1.3 nm. The SnO₂ nanosheets are further employed for the regioselective Friedel-Crafts acylation to synthesize aromatic ketones that have potential significance in chemical industry as synthetic intermediates of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. A series of aromatic substrates acylated over the SnO₂ nanosheets have afforded the corresponding aromatic ketones with up to 92% yield under solvent-free conditions. Comprehensive catalytic investigations display the SnO₂ nanosheet assembly as a better catalytic material compared to the heterogeneous metal oxide catalysts used so far in the view of its activity and reusability in solvent-free reaction conditions.

Vapor Phase Alkylation of Isomeric Cresols with Tert-Butyl Alcohol over Perlite Supported Sulfated Zirconia Catalyst

In the present study, perlite was thermally activated and then modified desirably to generate super acidity by loading different weight percentages of sulfated zirconia (SZ) via the two-step sol-gel method. As-prepared sulfated zirconia perlite (SZP) catalysts showed suitable catalytic potential in the vapor phase alkylation of o, m, and p-cresols with tert-butyl alcohol. The presence of crystalline phases in SZP catalysts was confirmed by XRD and FT-IR studies. TEM images revealed the nano size of the catalysts in the range of 9–25 nm. The presence of SZ on the surface of perlite was further confirmed by N2 adsorption–desorption, SEM, SEM-EDX, TGA, and UV-Vis DRS techniques. The pyridine FT-IR results confirmed the existence of Brønsted, Lewis acidic sites and their combination as super acidic catalytic active centers on the surface of catalyst utilized in the vapor phase alkylation of o, m, and p-cresols with tert-butyl alcohol. The regeneration and reusability of the preferred catalyst until the 5th reaction cycle without any considerable loss in catalytic activity demonstrated the stability of the catalyst. Comparative studies show that SZP can be regenerated and is superior compared to other catalysts previously used for other alkylation reactions with the potential for use on a large scale.

Well-Dispersed Trifluoromethanesulfonic Acid-Treated Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Immobilized on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon as Catalysts for Friedel-Crafts Acylation

Although strong acid-treated metal oxides are useful heterogeneous superacid catalysts for various organic transformations, they usually have a limited density of acidic sites due to their low surface areas. Herein, heterogeneous trifluoromethanesulfonic acid immobilized nitrogen-doped carbon-incarcerated titanium nanoparticle (NP) catalysts have been developed that are composed of well-dispersed, small Ti NPs (ca 7 nm) that are otherwise difficult to achieve using acid-treated metal oxides. The catalysts showed high activity for Friedel-Crafts acylation with low titanium loading (2 mol%, <1 mg of metal for 1 mmol of substrate). A range of microscopic, spectroscopic and physicochemical studies revealed that the nitrogen-doped carbon immobilized the trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and that the addition of metals further changed the nature of the acidic species and enhanced catalytic activity.

Heterogeneous Catalytic Upgrading of Biofuranic Aldehydes to Alcohols

Heterogeneous catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic components into valuable chemicals and biofuels is one of the promising ways for biomass valorization, which well meets green chemistry metrics, and can alleviate environmental and economic issues caused by the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Among the identified biomass derivatives, furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) stand out as rich building blocks and can be directly produced from pentose and hexose sugars, respectively. In the past decades, much attention has been attracted to the selective hydrogenation of FF and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using various heterogeneous catalysts. This review evaluates the recent progress of developing different heterogeneous catalytic materials, such as noble/non-noble metal particles, solid acids/bases, and alkali metal salts, for the efficient reduction of bio-based furanic aldehydes to alcohols. Emphasis is laid on the insights and challenges encountered in those biomass transformation processes, along with the focus on the understanding of reaction mechanisms to clarify the catalytic role of specific active species. Brief outlook is also made for further optimization of the catalytic systems and processes for the upgrading of biofuranic compounds.

Promoting effect of zirconium oxide on Cu–Al2O3 catalyst for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol

The ZrO₂-promoted Cu–Al₂O₃ catalyst presented excellent catalytic activity for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol.
