Abstract
Responding to the growing concerns about environmental pollutants, scientists are increasingly turning to innovative solutions rooted in the field of environmental science. One such promising avenue combines the robustness of traditional photocatalysis with the precision of molecular imprinting, leading to the proposition of molecularly imprinted photocatalysts (MIPCs). These MIPCs hold the potential to specifically target and eliminate environmental pollutants, marking them as a promising tool in modern environmental remediation. As researchers delve deeper into this field, the design and optimization of MIPCs have become hotbeds for scientific inquiry. This comprehensive overview delves into the multifaceted approaches to MIPC design, elucidating on aspects like the selection of appropriate photocatalytic bases, the pivotal role of templates, the choice of monomeric building blocks, and the integration of effective cross-linking agents. However, as with all burgeoning technologies, the development of MIPCs is not without its challenges. These potential impediments to the successful innovation and implementation of MIPCs are also explored.

Recent Advances in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Antibiotic Analysis. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2023; 28:molecules28010335. [PMID: 36615529 PMCID: PMC9822428 DOI: 10.3390/molecules28010335] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 9.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2022] [Revised: 12/16/2022] [Accepted: 12/18/2022] [Indexed: 01/04/2023]
Abstract
The abuse and residues of antibiotics have a great impact on the environment and organisms, and their determination has become very important. Due to their low contents, varieties and complex matrices, effective recognition, separation and enrichment are usually required prior to determination. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), a kind of highly selective polymer prepared via molecular imprinting technology (MIT), are used widely in the analytical detection of antibiotics, as adsorbents of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and as recognition elements of sensors. Herein, recent advances in MIPs for antibiotic residue analysis are reviewed. Firstly, several new preparation techniques of MIPs for detecting antibiotics are briefly introduced, including surface imprinting, nanoimprinting, living/controlled radical polymerization, and multi-template imprinting, multi-functional monomer imprinting and dummy template imprinting. Secondly, several SPE modes based on MIPs are summarized, namely packed SPE, magnetic SPE, dispersive SPE, matrix solid-phase dispersive extraction, solid-phase microextraction, stir-bar sorptive extraction and pipette-tip SPE. Thirdly, the basic principles of MIP-based sensors and three sensing modes, including electrochemical sensing, optical sensing and mass sensing, are also outlined. Fourthly, the research progress on molecularly imprinted SPEs (MISPEs) and MIP-based electrochemical/optical/mass sensors for the detection of various antibiotic residues in environmental and food samples since 2018 are comprehensively reviewed, including sulfonamides, quinolones, β-lactams and so on. Finally, the preparation and application prospects of MIPs for detecting antibiotics are outlined.

Abstract
Nickel-impregnated TiO2 photocatalyst (NiTP) responding to visible light was prepared by the liquid phase plasma (LPP) method, and its photoactivity was evaluated in degrading an antibiotic (oxytetracycline, OTC). For preparing the photocatalyst, nickel was uniformly impregnated onto TiO2 (P-25) powder, and the nickel content increased as the number of LPP reactions increased. In addition, the morphology and lattice of NiTP were observed through various instrumental analyses, and it was confirmed that NiO-type nanoparticles were impregnated in NiTP. Fundamentally, as the amount of impregnated nickel in the TiO2 powder increased sufficiently, the band gap energy of TiO2 decreased, and eventually, the NiTP excited by visible light was synthesized. Further, OTC had a decomposition reaction pathway in which active radicals generated in OTC photocatalytic reaction under NiTP were finally mineralized through reactions such as decarboxamidation, hydration, deamination, demethylation, and dehydroxylation. In effect, we succeeded in synthesizing a photocatalyst useable under visible light by performing only the LPP single process and developed a new advanced oxidation process (AOP) that can remove toxic antibiotics.

Abstract
The possibility of generating organically modified hollow TiO2 microspheres via a simple sol-gel synthesis was demonstrated for the first time in this work. A mixture of titania precursors, including an organically modified precursor, was used to obtain methyl-modified hollow TiO2 microspheres selective for bilirubin by the molecular imprinting technique (Methyl-HTM-MIM). Methyl-HTM-MIM were prepared by a sol-gel method using titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP), and methyltitanium triisopropoxide (MTTIP) as precursors. Two ratios of titania precursors were tested (1/6 and 1/30 molMTTIP/molTTIP). With the characterization results obtained by the SEM and ATR-FTIR techniques, it was possible to establish that only the 1/30 molMTTIP/molTTIP ratio allowed for the preparation of hollow spheres with a reasonably homogeneous methylated-TiO2 shell. It was possible to obtain a certain degree of organization of the hybrid network, which increased with calcination temperatures. By adjusting isothermal adsorption models, imprinting parameters were determined, indicating that the new methylated microspheres presented greater selectivity for bilirubin than the totally inorganic hollow TiO2 microspheres. The effectiveness of the molecular imprinting technique was proven for the first time in an organically modified titania material, with imprinting factor values greater than 1.4, corresponding to a significant increase in the maximum adsorption capacity of the template represented by the molecularly imprinted microspheres. In summary, the results obtained with the new methyl-HTM-MIM open the possibility of exploring the application of these microspheres for selective sorption (separation or sensing, for example) or perhaps even for selective photocatalysis, particularly for the degradation of organic compounds.

Abstract
This study developed a new water treatment method using liquid-phase plasma (LPP) process that can decompose oxytetracycline (OTC) remaining in the aquatic environment. Relatedly, the OTC causes damage to the human body and cannot be removed by traditional water treatment methods. The study also prepared Fe/TiO2 photocatalyst responding to visible light using the LPP process. In particular, the OTC decomposition efficiency of the LPP process improved by more than 10% with the use of the Fe/TiO2 photocatalyst as compared to that of the one with the use of bare TiO2 photocatalyst. Further, the optimal LPP process parameters and Fe/TiO2 photocatalyst amount in the LPP process for OTC decomposition were established in the study. Finally, the degradation pathway of the OTC in the LPP process was found based on the five intermediates of the LPP reaction that were detected by the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. In particular, the decomposition pathway was estimated to be involving the mineralization of the OTC through demethylation, deamination, dehydration, and ring cleavage.

Abstract
Fly ash is readily available and cheaply generated as 47a by-product of the combustion of organic matter. A tremendous amount of fly ash is generated worldwide, and its disposal has imposed 47a severe environmental concern. Its good adsorption capacities attracted several researchers to study the use of fly ash as 47a support for photocatalysts for the degradation of contaminants from wastewater. Undoubtedly the photocatalysts supported on fly ash have represented excellent degradation efficiencies due to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic capacity. The utilization of fly ash as 47a precursor has solved the problem of disposal and added value to the waste by-product. Various preparation techniques for fly ash-based nanocomposites such as the sol-gel method, hydrothermal method, solvothermal method, precipitation and co-precipitation, modified metalorganic decomposition, electrospinning, incipient impregnation, and wet chemical synthesis, along with 47a brief study of their characterization using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction technique and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the mechanism of photodegradation of dyes have been discussed in this paper. The literature shows that SiO2, TiO2, and Al2O3 present in fly ash play an essential role in the photodegradation of dyes. Factors affecting the degradation of dyes, their kinetic studies, and methods to enhance photodegradation efficiency have also been discussed.

Abstract
In this study, MoS2/ZnSnO3 (MS-ZSO) composite photocatalyst with loading MS nanosheets onto the surface of porous ZSO microcubes was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal route. The prepared MS-ZSO composite can be easily excited under visible light, and 3 % MS-ZSO exhibits an outstanding photo-degradation (>80 % in 60 min) and mineralization performance (>42 % in 60 min) of the tetracycline. A remarkable improvement in the photocatalytic activity of MS-ZSO composite derived from a positive synergistic effect of well-matched energy level positions, increasement the absorption of visible light, prolonged life time decay and improved interfacial charge transfer between MS and ZSO. In-depth investigation on charge carrier separation mechanism toward MS/ZSO composite under visible light was proposed, which was further evidenced by capture experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques. Furthermore, the corresponding intermediates of tetracycline degradation over MS-ZSO composites were inspected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, and the possible degradation paths were proposed.

Abstract
Management of coal fly ash as a particulate byproduct of coal burning has become an issue to be solved right away due to environmental concerns related to soil, water, and air pollution. Many attempts have been made by researchers for the conversion of coal fly ash into useful products while searching feasible avenues for its sustainable utilization. Wastewater remediation using coal fly ash is one such attempt solving both waste management and water quality issues. The characteristics like morphology, surface area, porosity, and chemical composition (silica, alumina, iron oxide, titania, etc.) make coal fly ash amenable material for potential application in wastewater treatment. Few reports have summarized the coal fly ash utilization in wastewater treatment but solely discussed the adsorption. Besides adsorption, the current paper aims to highlight the possibilities of using coal fly ash in wastewater treatment by different technologies that extend the utilization scope in the domains of filtration, Fenton process, photocatalysis, and coagulation. The promising use of coal fly ash as an adsorbent, membrane filter, Fenton catalyst, photocatalyst, and as an integral part of these structures is reviewed. Finally, the current trends and future prospects on utilization modes of coal fly ash in wastewater treatment are stated.

Oxytetracycline recovery from aqueous media using computationally designed molecularly imprinted polymers. Anal Bioanal Chem 2016; 408:6845-56. Abstract
Polymers for recovery/removal of the antimicrobial agent oxytetracycline (OTC) from aqueous media were developed with use of computational design and molecular imprinting. 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and mixtures of the two were chosen according to their predicted affinity for OTC and evaluated as functional monomers in molecularly imprinted polymers and nonimprinted polymers. Two levels of AMPS were tested. After bulk polymerization, the polymers were crushed into particles (200-1000 μm). Pressurized liquid extraction was implemented for template removal with a low amount of methanol (less than 20 mL in each extraction) and a few extractions (12-18 for each polymer) in a short period (20 min per extraction). Particle size distribution, microporous structure, and capacity to rebind OTC from aqueous media were evaluated. Adsorption isotherms obtained from OTC solutions (30-110 mg L(-1)) revealed that the polymers prepared with AMPS had the highest affinity for OTC. The uptake capacity depended on the ionic strength as follows: purified water > saline solution (0.9 % NaCl) > seawater (3.5 % NaCl). Polymer particles containing AMPS as a functional monomer showed a remarkable ability to clean water contaminated with OTC. The usefulness of the stationary phase developed for molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction was also demonstrated. Graphical Abstract Selection of functional monomers by molecular modeling renders polymer networks suitable for removal of pollutants from contaminated aqueous environments, under either dynamic or static conditions.

Abstract
An one-step efficient simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was achieved with mixture of TiO₂ and titanate nanotubes (TNTs). Unlike the conventional two-step Cr removal with a first photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and a subsequent adsorption of Cr(III), the proposed single process significantly reduced reaction time (over 50%). The synergy of photocatalysis and adsorption played an important role in enhancing Cr removal process. The synergetic mechanism was interpreted and indirectly confirmed with H₂O₂ variation during photocatalysis. The instant transfer of the reduced Cr from TiO₂ surface to TNTs interlayer greatly promoted the release of photocatalytic sites of TiO₂, which in turn considerably enhanced photocatalytic activity of TNTs by inhibiting electron-hole pairs recombination. The optimum condition for the whole process was at pH 5. Adsorption of Cr(III) was primarily in the interlayer of TNTs at pH ≤ 5. However, higher pH would lead to precipitation of Cr(OH)₃ onto TNTs as observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Addition of Ca(2+) could promoted photocatalysis owing to its ionic bridging function and form of ≡TiOH(+)-Cr(VI)-Ca(2+)-Cr(VI) linkages, while SO₄(2-) only slightly inhibited photo-reduction of Cr(VI), indicating good synergy of photocatalysis and adsorption even at high ionic strength of electrolyte. Besides, the desorbed TNTs could be easily regenerated by remedying the damaged tubular structure and reused for Cr removal with excellent performance. The outstanding synergetic effects with essential explanation of the mechanism make this study not only fundamentally important but also potentially practical applicable.
