Abstract
Owing to the broad applications of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS), we present the synthesis of benzimidazolium-based analogues with variation in the alkyl and alkoxy group at N-1 and N-3 positions. All the compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques and found stable to air and moisture both in the solid and solution state. Moreover, molecular structures were established through single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The crystal packing of the compounds was stabilized by numerous intermolecular interactions explored by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The enrichment ratio was calculated for the pairs of chemical species to acquire the highest propensity to form contacts. Void analysis was carried out to check the mechanical response of the compounds. Furthermore, theoretical investigations were also performed to explore the optoelectronic properties of compounds. Natural population analysis (NPA) has been conducted to evaluate the distribution of charges on the synthesized compounds, whereas high band gaps of the synthesized compounds by frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis indicated their stability. Nonlinear optical (NLO) analysis revealed that the synthesized QAS demonstrates significantly improved NLO behaviour than the standard urea.

Abstract
In the present study, Ricinus communis seed oil with high free fatty acid content was utilized for the one-pot biodiesel production using 1-(2,3-dihydroxy)-propyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide, a basic ionic liquid catalyst. The 97.83% biodiesel yield was obtained at the optimized conditions of 6.26 % (w/w) of catalyst concentration, 10.51:1 M ratio of methanol to oil, 57.87 °C temperature and reaction time of 61.01 min. The transesterification of Ricinus communis seed oil to biodiesel exhibited an activation energy of 37.60 kJ/mol. The technoeconomic analysis, the profitability and the sensitivity analysis were investigated for the simulated process design. The technoeconomic analysis reported a total revenue of 20,455,431 $/yr, with gross margins, ROI, payback period, IRR, and NPV of 23.54%, 35.72%, 2.8 years, 28.20%, and 19,287,000 $, respectively. According to the sensitivity analysis, the two most important factors determining the economic viability of the simulated process are Ricinus communis seed oil cost and biodiesel selling price.

Abstract
Monitoring the concentration levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is significant in both clinical and industrial applications. Herein, we develop a facile biosensor for the detection of H2O2 based on direct electron transfer of hemoglobin (Hb), which was covalently immobilized on a hydrophobic naphthylimidazolium butyric acid ionic liquid (NIBA-IL) over a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain an Hb/NIBA-IL/MWCNT/GCE. Highly water-soluble Hb protein was firmly immobilized on NIBA-IL via stable amide bonding between the free NH2 groups of Hb and COOH groups of NIBA-IL via EDC/NHS coupling. Thus fabricated biosensor showed a well resolved redox peak with a cathodic peak potential (Epc) at -0.35 V and anodic peak potential (Epa) at -0.29 V with a formal potential (E°') of -0.32 V, which corresponds to the deeply buried FeIII/FeII redox centre of Hb, thereby direct electrochemistry of Hb was established. Further, the modified electrode demonstrated very good electrocatalytic activity towards H2O2 reduction and showed a wide linear range of detection from 0.01 to 6.3 mM with a limit of detection and sensitivity of 3.2 μM and 111 μA mM-1 cm-2, respectively. Moreover, the developed biosensor displayed high operational stability under dynamic conditions as well as during continuous potential cycles and showed reliable reproducibility. The superior performance of the fabricated biosensor is attributed to the effective covalent immobilization of Hb on the newly developed highly conducting and biocompatible NIBA-IL/MWCNT/GCE platform.

Abstract
The first gemini-type benzimidazole ionic liquid ([C4-6-C4BIm]Br2) with two sites of action was synthesized and applied for gold extraction. The effects of [C4-6-C4BIm]Br2 concentration, initial gold(iii) concentration, acidity, and the loading capacity of [C4-6-C4BIm]Br2 were examined in detail. It was found that [C4-6-C4BIm]Br2 has excellent extraction ability for obtaining high purity gold. The anion exchange mechanism between [C4-6-C4BIm]Br2 and Au(iii) was proved by Job's method and 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to prove the mechanism theoretically. The extraction equilibrium process was modeled using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters ΔH, ΔG and ΔS indicated that the extraction process was exothermic and spontaneous. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model well fitted the experimental data (R = 0.99). In addition, [C4-6-C4BIm]Br2 has high selectivity for Au(iii) compared to other base metals. In summary, [C4-6-C4BIm]Br2 has great application prospects in industry due to its excellent characteristics such as low cost, easy availability, and high extraction capacity.

Abstract
A series of 1-substituted-1H-benzimidazolium p-toluenesulfonate salts were synthesized in good yields by the reaction of 1-substituted benzimidazole derivatives and p-toluenesulfonic acid under microwave irradiation. Two iodide salts were synthesized by the anion exchange reaction of the corresponding p-toluenesulfonate salt and NaI. All compounds were characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, IR, LC-MS spectroscopic methods, and elemental analyses. The crystal structure of 1-methoxyethyl-1H-benzimidazolium p-toluenesulfonate 2d showed that cation and anion are interconnected by N-H···O and C-H···O hydrogen bonds. All compounds were examined as inhibitor of human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) I and II, and all of them inhibited hCA I and hCA II. Kinetic investigation results revealed that these compounds inhibit hCA I and hCA II in a non-competitive manner. The iodide salts had higher inhibitory activity than their corresponding p-toluenesulfonate salts.

Abstract
This article provides an overview about specifically modified Mannich reactions where the process involves an ortho-quinone methide (o-QM) intermediate. The reactions are classified on the basis of the o-QM source followed by the reactant, e.g., the dienophile partner in cycloaddition reactions (C=C or C=N dienophiles) or by the formation of multicomponent Mannich adducts. Due to the important pharmacological activities of these reactive o-QM intermediates, special attention is paid to the biological activity of these compounds.
