Recent Progress in the Synthesis and Applications of Composite Photocatalysts: A Critical Review

Photocatalysis is an advanced technique that transforms solar energy into sustainable fuels and oxidizes pollutants via the aid of semiconductor photocatalysts. The main scientific and technological challenges for effective photocatalysis are the stability, robustness, and efficiency of semiconductor photocatalysts. For practical applications, researchers are trying to develop highly efficient and stable photocatalysts. Since the literature is highly scattered, it is urgent to write a critical review that summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in the design of a variety of semiconductor composite photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications. Herein, a comprehensive review is presented that summarizes an overview, history, mechanism, advantages, and challenges of semiconductor photocatalysis. Further, the recent advancements in the design of heterostructure photocatalysts including alloy quantum dots based composites, carbon based composites including carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and graphene, covalent-organic frameworks based composites, metal based composites including metal carbides, metal halide perovskites, metal nitrides, metal oxides, metal phosphides, and metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks based composites, plasmonic materials based composites and single atom based composites for CO₂ conversion, H₂ evolution, and pollutants oxidation are discussed elaborately. Finally, perspectives for further improvement in the design of composite materials for efficient photocatalysis are provided.

Precursor-mediated synthesis of Cu2−xSe nanoparticles and their composites with TiO2 for improved photocatalysis

Simple, but effective. Successful isolation and characterization of an intermediate during the reaction of ^tBu₂Se with Cu(TFA)₂ establishes the route for the formation of copper selenide NPs and Cu_2−xSe–TiO₂ composites as active photocatalysts.

Synthesis, characterization and enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity of novel NiO/HTi2NbO7nanocomposite

Electron-transfer dependent photocatalytic hydrogen generation over cross-linked CdSe/TiO2 type-II heterostructure

Developing type-II heterostructures with a spatial separation of photoexcited electrons and holes is a useful route to promote photocatalytic hydrogen generation. However, few investigations on the charge transfer process across the heterojunction have been carried out, which can allow us to uncover the reaction mechanism. Herein, CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and TiO₂ nanocrystals were synthesized and combined in water yielding CdSe/TiO₂ type II heterostructures. It was found that mercaptopropionic acid as bifunctional molecules could bind with CdSe and TiO₂ to form a cross-linked morphology. The charge carrier dynamics of bare CdSe and CdSe/TiO₂ were detected using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. In the presence of TiO₂, the average exciton lifetime of CdSe QDs was apparently decreased, owing to the electron transfer from photoexcited CdSe to TiO₂. Particularly, the electron-transfer rate from small CdSe QDs (3.0 nm) was much faster than that from big CdSe QDs (4.2 nm). The improved photocatalytic hydrogen generation was observed for CdSe/TiO₂ compared to bare CdSe QDs. The enhancement factor for small CdSe QDs was higher than that for big CdSe QDs, which was in good agreement with the electron-transfer rates. This result indicated that the electron transfer between CdSe and TiO₂ played an important role in photocatalytic hydrogen generation on CdSe/TiO₂ type-II heterostructure. Our study provides a fundamental guidance to construct efficient heterostructured photocatalysts by delicate control of the band alignment.
