Effect of an Electric Field on the Structure and Stability of Atmospheric Clusters

We study the influence of an applied electric field on the structure and stability of some common bimolecular clusters that are found in the atmosphere. These clusters play an important role in new particle formation (NPF). For low values of the electric field (i.e., |E| ≤ 0.01 V Å-1), we demonstrate that the field response of the clusters can be predicted from simply calculating the dipole moment of the cluster and the dipole moments of the constituent molecules and that the influence on the association energy of the cluster is minimal (i.e., <0.5 kcal mol-1). For higher field strengths |E| > 0.2 V Å-1, there can be more dramatic effects on both structure and energetics, as the induced dipole, charge transfer, and geometric distortion play a larger role. Although such large fields are not very relevant in the atmosphere, they do exist in some situations of experimental interest, such as near interfaces and in intense laser fields.

Kinetic study on electro-nucleation of water in a heterogeneous propane nano-bubble system to form polycrystalline ice Ic

Elucidating the underlying mechanisms of water solidification in heterogeneous systems is crucially important for a panoply of applications; gaining such an understanding has also proven to be very challenging to the community. Indeed, one such example lies in clarifying the thermodynamics and kinetics of electro-crystallization in heterogeneous systems, such as micro- and nano-bubble systems. Here, we employ non-equilibrium molecular dynamics of water in heterogeneous environments experiencing direct contact with a propane gas phase at various temperatures in externally applied static electric fields, elucidating significant external-field effects in inducing poly-crystalline cubic-ice formation. This is in stark contrast with recent work on homogeneous cubic-ice electro-nucleation to produce largely fault-free single crystals. We explore the kinetics of heterogeneous cubic-ice electro-nucleation under different field intensities and thermal conditions and provide an overview of time-dependent dynamics of evolution of polycrystallinity.

Changes of water hydrogen bond network with different externalities

It is crucial to uncover the mystery of water cluster and structural motif to have an insight into the abundant anomalies bound to water. In this context, the analysis of influence factors is an alternative way to shed light on the nature of water clusters. Water structure has been tentatively explained within different frameworks of structural models. Based on comprehensive analysis and summary of the studies on the response of water to four externalities (i.e., temperature, pressure, solutes and external fields), the changing trends of water structure and a deduced intrinsic structural motif are put forward in this work. The variations in physicochemical and biological effects of water induced by each externality are also discussed to emphasize the role of water in our daily life. On this basis, the underlying problems that need to be further studied are formulated by pointing out the limitations attached to current study techniques and to outline prominent studies that have come up recently.

Inertial effects in the nonlinear transient relaxation of rigid rodlike molecules in a strong dc electric field

A method of calculation of nonlinear transient responses of an assembly of noninteracting polar linear molecules due to sudden changes in a strong external dc electric field is presented. The infinite hierarchy of differential-recurrence relations for the decay functions describing the relaxation of the system is derived by averaging the underlying inertial Langevin equation. The solution of this hierarchy is obtained in terms of matrix continued fractions. The integral relaxation time and the spectrum of the electric polarization for various nonlinear transient responses (step-on, step-off, and rapidly rotating field) are calculated for typical values of the model parameters. The nonlinear transient responses exhibit pronounced nonlinear effects due to the strong dc field. Analytical equations for the quantities of interest are presented in the overdamped limit. Furthermore, the linear response relaxation function and linear dynamic susceptibility are obtained as a particular case of a general nonlinear theory.
