Properties of protic ionic liquids composed of N-alkyl (= hexyl, octyl and 2-ethylhexyl) ethylenediaminum cations with trifluoromethanesulfonate and trifluoroacetate anion

Self-propelled motion controlled by ionic liquids

We studied the self-propulsion of a camphor disk floating on a water surface using two types of ionic liquids (hexylammonium-trifluoroacetate (HHexam-TFA) and hexylethylenediaminium-trifluoroacetate (HHexen-TFA)). Bifurcation between continuous, oscillatory, and no motion was observed depending on the concentration of the ionic liquid. The bifurcation concentration between oscillatory and no motion for HHexam-TFA was lower than that for HHexen-TFA. The different bifurcation concentrations are discussed in relation to the surface tension and Fourier transform infrared spectra of the mixtures of camphor and ionic liquids. These results suggest that the interaction between the ionic liquid molecules at the air/water interface is weakened by the addition of camphor molecules and the features of self-propulsion vary due to the change in the driving force.

Experimental Investigation on Thermophysical Properties of Ammonium-Based Protic Ionic Liquids and Their Potential Ability towards CO2 Capture

Ionic liquids, which are extensively known as low-melting-point salts, have received significant attention as the promising solvent for CO₂ capture. This work presents the synthesis, thermophysical properties and the CO₂ absorption of a series of ammonium cations coupled with carboxylate anions producing ammonium-based protic ionic liquids (PILs), namely 2-ethylhexylammonium pentanoate ([EHA][C5]), 2-ethylhexylammonium hexanoate ([EHA][C6]), 2-ethylhexylammonium heptanoate ([EHA][C7]), bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium pentanoate ([BEHA][C5]), bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium hexanoate ([BEHA][C6]) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium heptanoate ([BEHA][C7]). The chemical structures of the PILs were confirmed by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy while the density (ρ) and the dynamic viscosity (η) of the PILs were determined and analyzed in a range from 293.15K up to 363.15K. The refractive index (n_D) was also measured at T = (293.15 to 333.15) K. Thermal analyses conducted via a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) indicated that all PILs have the thermal decomposition temperature, T_d of greater than 416K and the presence of glass transition, T_g was detected in each PIL. The CO₂ absorption of the PILs was studied up to 29 bar at 298.15 K and the experimental results showed that [BEHA][C7] had the highest CO₂ absorption with 0.78 mol at 29 bar. The CO₂ absorption values increase in the order of [C5] < [C6] < [C7] anion regardless of the nature of the cation.

Transport of imidazolium-based ionic liquids with different anion/cation species in sand/soil columns

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely used as environmentally friendly solvents to replace volatile organic solvents in the chemistry industries. They have a high water solubility and potential risk to organisms in the soil-water environment. At present, most studies focused on the batch sorption of ILs in soil and neglected the investigation of IL transports in soil, which results in a lack of understanding of the structure-dependent mobility of ILs in the environment. Laboratory-scale sand/soil column experiments were performed to study the transport of imidazolium-based ILs, such as [C₄mim][OTF], [C₄mim][TOS], [C₄mim][MeSO₃], [C₄mim][BF₄], [C₂mim][BF₄], and [C₆mim][BF₄] including different counteranions and alkyl chain lengths of IL cations. Batch experiments were also carried out to compare the difference of sorption distribution coefficient (K_d) between the batch and column experiments. A one-dimensional convective-dispersive model using CXTFIT code was created based on the measured breakthrough curves (BTCs) to estimate the column transport parameters. For the anion, [BF₄^-], the K_d of ILs in both batch and column experiments increased with increasing alkyl chain lengths of the IL cation. In batch tests, counteranions showed no influence on the K_d of [C₄mim][OTF], [C₄mim][TOS], [C₄mim][MeSO₃], [C₄mim][BF₄], [C₂mim][BF₄], and [C₆mim][BF₄]. However, in column tests, the BTCs of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ILs were anion dependent as evidenced by the change of retardation factor (R) for different counteranions. Furthermore, the effects of transport distance (11cm, 15cm, 19cm, and 24cm) on the mobility of ILs were estimated. The longer distances signified an increase in the contact time and more binding sites for ILs and therefore, the smoother shapes of BTCs in column experiments.

Application of a General Computer Algorithm Based on the Group-Additivity Method for the Calculation of Two Molecular Descriptors at Both Ends of Dilution: Liquid Viscosity and Activity Coefficient in Water at Infinite Dilution

The application of a commonly used computer algorithm based on the group-additivity method for the calculation of the liquid viscosity coefficient at 293.15 K and the activity coefficient at infinite dilution in water at 298.15 K of organic molecules is presented. The method is based on the complete breakdown of the molecules into their constituting atoms, further subdividing them by their immediate neighborhood. A fast Gauss–Seidel fitting method using experimental data from literature is applied for the calculation of the atom groups’ contributions. Plausibility tests have been carried out on each of the calculations using a ten-fold cross-validation procedure which confirms the excellent predictive quality of the method. The goodness of fit (Q²) and the standard deviation (σ) of the cross-validation calculations for the viscosity coefficient, expressed as log(η), was 0.9728 and 0.11, respectively, for 413 test molecules, and for the activity coefficient log(γ)^∞ the corresponding values were 0.9736 and 0.31, respectively, for 621 test compounds. The present approach has proven its versatility in that it enabled the simultaneous evaluation of the liquid viscosity of normal organic compounds as well as of ionic liquids.
