Carbon nanotubes as adsorbents for uranyl ions from aqueous solutions: A molecular dynamics study

Toward a quasiphase transition in the single-file chain of water molecules: Simple lattice model

Recently, Ma et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 027402 (2017)] have suggested that water molecules encapsulated in (6,5) single-wall carbon nanotube experience a temperature-induced quasiphase transition around 150 K interpreted as changes in the water dipoles orientation. We discuss further this temperature-driven quasiphase transition performing quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations and, most importantly, suggesting a simple lattice model to reproduce the properties of the one-dimensional confined finite arrays of water molecules. The lattice model takes into account not only the short-range and long-range interactions but also the rotations in a narrow tube, and both ingredients provide an explanation for a temperature-driven orientational ordering of the water molecules, which persists within a relatively wide temperature range.

A novel nanocomposite of Liquidambar styraciflua fruit biochar-crosslinked-nanosilica for uranyl removal from water

Biochar adsorption has been protruded as a sustainable green and economic process for water remediation. This technology is facing high challenges in removing different pollutants, owning to the stable chemical and physical features of biochar. Therefore, a novel nanocomposite of Liquidambar styraciflua fruit biochar-crosslinked-nanosilica (BC-Gl-NSi) was synthesized and characterized (surface area = 60.754 m² g^-1 and particle size = 17.32-36.25 nm). The designed BC-Gl-NSi nanocomposite was explored for removal of uranyl ions by the batch adsorption technique under the influence of different factors including temperature, contact time, nanocomposite dosage, pH, uranyl ion concentration as well as co-existing ions. The adsorption process was principally confirmed to rely on the solution pH and reached 86.3% in pH 4.0. The results showed also that one-minute contact duration was sufficient to reach the maximum extraction of uranyl (30.0 mg L^-1). Besides, [BC-Gl-NSi] exhibited excellent selectivity and good recovery of uranyl ions with other competing ions.

Carboxylated carbon nanotubes corked with tetraalkylammonium cations: A concept of nanocarriers in aqueous solutions

An explicit water molecular dynamics simulations were used to probe (6,6) and (9,9) single-walled carbon nanotubes, functionalized with three carboxylate ion groups at each of the two openings, as potential nanocarriers in aqueous solutions. Three tetraalkylammonium cations (i.e., tetraethyl-, tetrapropyl-, and tetrabuthylammonium) were tested as corks to cap the nanotube openings. The variation of the sizes of the nanotubes (diameter) and of the cork cations (bulkiness) allowed us to select the proper corks that fit the nanotube openings best. Smaller tetraalkylammonium ions could easily fit the openings, but since they are less hydrophobic compared to their larger analogues they showed less affinity for the interior of the nanotubes. On the other hand, the hydrophobicity (and thus the affinity for the nanotubes) can be adjusted through the increase of tetraalkylammonium cation size, providing that the cork still fits the opening. Additionally, an external electric field was tested as a means of nanotube uncorking. The field is capable of disjoining corked ions from the functionalized nanotube openings, triggering in this way a potential cargo release stored inside the nanotubes.
