Competitive adsorption of ternary dye mixture using pine cone powder modified with β-cyclodextrin

Pirarucu hydroxyapatite applied to ternary competitive adsorption of synthetic basic dyes as contaminants of emerging concern: kinetic, equilibrium, and ANN studies

This study investigated the single and multicomponent adsorption of three emerging pollutants, the basic dyes Rhodamine 6G (R6G), Auramine-O (AO), and Brilliant Green (BG) by using hydroxyapatite synthesized from Pirarucu scales as adsorbent (HAP). The adsorption process was studied using seven different systems: AO-single, R6G-single, BG-single, R6G + AO, BG + AO, BG + R6G, and R6G + AO + BG. For kinetics, the initial concentration of each adsorbate per system was 50 mg/L, the results showed that the singular adsorption of these dyes was best-represented by the pseudo-second-order model (qAO = 62.54 mg/g, qR6G = 7.91 mg/g, qBG = 62.40 mg/g), however, the multicomponent adsorption was well-fitted by a pseudo-first-order model (ternary system: qAO = 56.21 mg/g, qR6G = 14.95 mg/g, qBG = 60.62 mg/g). For equilibrium, the initial concentration of each adsorbate per system was 10-300 mg/L, and the single adsorption systems were best represented by the Langmuir model. Nonetheless, the results displayed in the multicomponent mixture showed the presence of inflection points of AO and R6G whenever BG was present in solution with C0 > 150 mg/L, thus indicating that BG has greater affinity with HAP. The presence of inflection points in the curves represented a limitation for applying traditional equilibrium models, thus, an artificial neural network (ANN) was applied to non-linear curve fit this process and satisfactorily predicted the kinetics and equilibrium data. Finally, the analysis of thermodynamics for the ternary mixture revealed that the adsorption process is spontaneous (ΔG < 0), endothermic (ΔH > 0), and increases to a disorganized state as the temperature rises (ΔS > 0).

A magnetically recyclable carboxyl-functionalized chitosan composite for efficiently removing methyl orange from wastewater: Isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamic, and adsorption mechanism

In this study, a kind of magnetically recyclable adsorbent for dyes was synthesized by grafting diethylenetriamine pentaacetate acid (DTPA) to the composite of Fe3O4 microspheres and crosslinked chitosan (CS). The microstructures, molecular structure, crystal structure, and magnetic hysteresis loops of the chitosan matrix adsorbent before and after grafting was characterized. The results suggested that DTPA was covalent bonded with the composite of Fe3O4 microspheres and chitosan. The modified composite has larger specific surface area and can realize rapid solid-liquid separation. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize the parameters affecting the adsorption of methyl orange (MO). The adsorption process could be better described by pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm equation, and its saturated adsorption capacity of the modified adsorbents was 1541.5 mg·g-1 at 25 °C, which was 1.40 times of that the unmodified adsorbent (1104.1 mg·g-1). The obtained values of the thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous process. The regeneration experiment proved the stability and reproducibility of the adsorbent even after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. The primary adsorption mechanism was electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The adsorbent could be potentially applied for removing dyes from wastewater in wide pH of range, especially acid wastewater.

A critical review on biochar production from pine wastes, upgradation techniques, environmental sustainability, and challenges

Pine wastes, including pine needles, cones, and wood, are abundantly produced as an agroforestry by-product globally and have shown tremendous potential for biochar production. Various thermochemical conversion technologies have exhibited promising results in converting pine wastes to biochar, displaying impressive performance. Hence, this review paper aims to investigate the possibilities and recent technological advancements for synthesizing biochar from pine waste. Furthermore, it explores techniques for enhancing the properties of biochar and its integrated applications in various fields, such as soil and water remediation, carbon sequestration, battery capacitor synthesis, and bio-coal production. Finally, the paper sheds light on the limitations of current strategies, emphasizing the need for further research and study to address the challenges in pine waste-based biochar synthesis. By promoting sustainable and effective utilization of pine wastes, this review contributes to environmental conservation and resource management.

Adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline using MnO2-engineered pine-cone biochar: thermodynamic and kinetic investigation and process optimization

Indiscriminate use of oxytetracycline is linked to the development of antibiotic-resistant genes, posing a serious threat to human health and ecosystem balance. This article reports the adsorptive elimination of oxytetracycline (OTC) from aqueous solution using a newly developed MnO2-modified pine-cone biochar (MnO2/PCBC). The MnO2/PCBC was characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, CHNS analyzer, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller N2 adsorption analyzer. Batch adsorption experiments, designed using the central composite design framework of response surface methodology, were conducted to investigate the influence of process variables on the adsorption of OTC onto MnO2/PCBC. The optimized conditions for achieving maximum removal (88.1%) were found to be at pH 8, MnO2/PCBC dose 0.44 g/L, initial OTC concentration 200 mg/L, and temperature 303 K. The adsorption process follows Langmuir (R2=0.95) and Freundlich (R2=0.95) isotherms and pseudo-second-order (R2=0.99) adsorption kinetics. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic (ΔH0 = 33.04 kJ/mol) and spontaneous in nature (ΔG0 from -1.33 kJ/mol at 283 K to -5.65 kJ/mol at 313 K). The synthesized MnO2/PCBC could be recycled and reused for OTC removal with a percentage removal of around 80% after fifth cycle. The results indicate an effective removal of oxytetracycline with only 0.44 g/L MnO2/PCBC with maximum adsorption capacity of 357.14 mg/g which demonstrates improved performance in comparison to many adsorbents reported in literature. This implies that MnO2/PCBC offers potential to be developed into a cost-effective technique for antibiotic removal from water.

Interactions between plant-derived antioxidants and cyclodextrins and their application for improving separation, detection, and food quality issues

Plant-derived antioxidants (PD-AOs) are important for food preservation, as well as for human health and nutrition. However, the poor chemical stability and water solubility of many PD-AOs currently limit their application as functional ingredients in foods and pharmaceuticals. Moreover, it is often difficult to isolate and detect specific antioxidants in multi-component systems, which again limits their potential in the food and medical industries. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the use of cyclodextrins (CDs) to overcome these limitations by forming simple, modified and competitive host-guest interactions with PD-AO. The host-guest properties of CDs can be used to enhance the separation efficiency of PD-AOs, as well as to improve their dispersion and stability in food systems. Moreover, the competitive complexation properties of CDs with target molecules can be used to selectively isolate PD-AOs from multi-component systems and develop detection technologies for PD-AOs. Overall, CD-antioxidant interactions have great potential for addressing isolation, detection, and food quality issues.

Fabrication of Stable MIL-53(Al) for Excellent Removal of Rhodamine B

Adsorptive purification of organic dyes in wastewater is significant to protect the water environment. Herein, MIL-53(Al) was successfully fabricated through a facile and versatile solvothermal strategy. The stability of MIL-53(Al) under high temperature, acid, base, and peroxide conditions was investigated. The porous MIL-53(Al) had high chemical stability, and the thermal stability reached up to 500 °C, which provided a good foundation for dye removal. MIL-53(Al) showed excellent adsorption performance. The maximum adsorption capacity of MIL-53(Al) for rhodamine B (RhB) can reach 1547 mg g^-1 under 303 K, and the corresponding removal efficiency exceeded 90% at the equilibrium time (120 min). The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model can well fit RhB adsorption on MIL-53(Al). Thermodynamic study and activation energy values over the range of 298-323 K revealed that the adsorption of RhB was a spontaneous and endothermic physical process in nature. The batch experimental results, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses suggested that the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between the hydroxyl/carboxyl groups of MIL-53(Al) and RhB were the primary adsorption mechanisms. Besides, MIL-53(Al) had a higher selectivity to RhB than the coexisting ions in aqueous solution and a superior adsorption performance after five cycles.

Adsorption of Cationic Contaminants by Cyclodextrin Nanosponges Cross-Linked with 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic Acid and Poly(vinyl alcohol)

Cationic organic pollutants (dyes and pesticides) are mainly hydrosoluble and easily contaminate water and create a serious problem for biotic and abiotic species. The elimination of these dangerous contaminants from water was accomplished by adsorption using cyclodextrin nanosponges. These nanosponges were elaborated by the cross-linking between 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid and β-cyclodextrin in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol). Their physicochemical characteristics were characterized by gravimetry, acid-base titration, TGA, 13C NMR, ATR-FTIR, Raman, X-ray diffraction, and Stereomicroscopy. The BP5 nanosponges displayed 68.4% yield, 3.31 mmol/g COOH groups, 0.16 mmol/g β-CD content, 54.2% swelling, 97.0% PQ removal, 96.7% SO removal, and 98.3% MG removal for 25 mg/L of initial concentration. The pseudo-second-order model was suitable for kinetics using 180 min of contact time. Langmuir isotherm was suitable for isotherm with the maximum adsorption of 120.5, 92.6, and 64.9 mg/g for paraquat (PQ), safranin (SO), and malachite green (MG) adsorption, respectively. Finally, the reusability performance after five regeneration times reached 94.1%, 91.6%, and 94.6% for PQ, SO, and MG adsorption, respectively.

Multifunctional β-Cyclodextrin-EDTA-Chitosan polymer adsorbent synthesis for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic dyes from wastewater

Heavy metals and organic dyes are the major source of water pollution. Herein, a trifunctional β-cyclodextrin-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-chitosan (β-CD-EDTA-CS) polymer was synthesized using an easy and simple chemical route by the reaction of activated β-CD with CS through EDTA as a cross-linker (amidation reaction) for the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from aqueous solution under different parameters such as pH, time effect, initial concentration, reusability, etc. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), thermogravimetric analyzer techniques to investigate their structural, functional, morphological, elemental compositions, surface area and thermal properties, respectively. Two types of heavy metals, i.e., mercury (Hg²⁺) and cadmium (Cd²⁺), and three organic dyes, i.e., methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and safranin O (SO) were chosen as inorganic and organic pollutants, respectively, to study the adsorption capacity of β-CD-EDTA-CS in aqueous solution. The β-CD-EDTA-CS shows monolayer adsorption capacity 346.30 ± 14.0 and 202.90 ± 13.90 mg g^-1 for Hg²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively, and a heterogeneous adsorption capacity 107.20 ± 5.70, 77.40 ± 5.30 and 55.30 ± 3.60 mg g^-1 for MB, CV and SO, respectively. Kinetics results followed pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetics behavior for both metal ions and dyes, and higher rate constants values (0.00161-0.00368 g mg^-1 min^-1) for dyes confirmed the cavitation of organic dyes (physisorption). In addition, we have also demonstrated the performance of β-CD-EDTA-CS for the of four heavy metals Hg²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Cu²⁺ and three dyes MB, CV, and SO in secondary treated wastewater. Findings of this study indicate that β-CD-EDTA-CS simple and essay to synthesize and can be use in wastewater treatment.

Biodegradation of Indanthrene Blue RS dye in immobilized continuous upflow packed bed bioreactor using corncob biochar

The current study describes the aerobic biodegradation of Indanthrene Blue RS dye by a microbial consortium immobilized on corn-cob biochar in a continuous up-flow packed bed bioreactor. The adsorption experiments were performed without microbes to monitor the adsorption effects on initial dye decolorization efficiency. The batch experiments were carried out to estimate the process parameters, and the optimal values of pH, temperature, and inoculum volume were identified as 10.0, 30 °C, and 3.0 × 10⁶ CFU mL⁻¹, respectively. During the continuous operation, the effect of flow rate, initial substrate concentration, inlet loading rate of Indanthrene Blue RS on the elimination capacity, and its removal efficiency in the bioreactor was studied. The continuous up-flow packed bed bioreactor was performed at different flow rates (0.25 to 1.25 L h⁻¹) under the optimal parameters. The maximum removal efficiency of 90% was observed, with the loading rate varying between 100 and 300 mg L⁻¹ day⁻¹. The up-flow packed bed bioreactor used for this study was extremely useful in eliminating Indanthrene Blue RS dye using both the biosorption and biodegradation process. Therefore, it is a potential treatment strategy for detoxifying textile wastewater containing anthraquinone-based dyes.

A Review on Polymer Nanocomposites and Their Effective Applications in Membranes and Adsorbents for Water Treatment and Gas Separation

Globally, environmental challenges have been recognised as a matter of concern. Among these challenges are the reduced availability and quality of drinking water, and greenhouse gases that give rise to change in climate by entrapping heat, which result in respirational illness from smog and air pollution. Globally, the rate of demand for the use of freshwater has outgrown the rate of population increase; as the rapid growth in town and cities place a huge pressure on neighbouring water resources. Besides, the rapid growth in anthropogenic activities, such as the generation of energy and its conveyance, release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, warming the planet. Polymer nanocomposite has played a significant role in finding solutions to current environmental problems. It has found interest due to its high potential for the reduction of gas emission, and elimination of pollutants, heavy metals, dyes, and oil in wastewater. The revolution of integrating developed novel nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and activated carbon, in polymers, have instigated revitalizing and favourable inventive nanotechnologies for the treatment of wastewater and gas separation. This review discusses the effective employment of polymer nanocomposites for environmental utilizations. Polymer nanocomposite membranes for wastewater treatment and gas separation were reviewed together with their mechanisms. The use of polymer nanocomposites as an adsorbent for toxic metals ions removal and an adsorbent for dye removal were also discussed, together with the mechanism of the adsorption process. Patents in the utilization of innovative polymeric nanocomposite membranes for environmental utilizations were discussed.

A combined molecular dynamic simulation, DFT calculations, and experimental study of the eriochrome black T dye adsorption onto chitosan in aqueous solutions

This study aims to evaluate and understand the adsorption of eriochrome black T (EB) by chitosan extracted from local shrimp shells under different experimental conditions. Chitosan samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR. Experimental results indicate that the process was pH-dependent with a high adsorption capacity in acidic medium. The adsorption was rapid and kinetic data were suitably correlated to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. EB molecules were adsorbed on monolayer according to the Langmuir model with an adsorption capacity of 162.3 mg/g. On the other hand, it should be noted that calculated quantum chemical parameters support the experimentally obtained results. The interaction energies calculated for (molecule/chitosan) complexes were in the order of H₂EB^- > HEB^2- (O38) > HEB^2- (O48) > EB > H₃EB > EB^3-, which means that the best and possible adsorption process can take place with H₂EB^- form. The molecular dynamics (MD) approach was performed to illuminate the nature of the relationship between the EB and the chitosan (110) surface. It was found that the chitosan (110) surface adsorbs EB molecule in a nearby parallel orientation. The higher negative adsorption energy determined for the H₂EB^- implies that the adsorption mechanism is the typical chemisorption.

The Role of β-Cyclodextrin in the Textile Industry-Review

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is an oligosaccharide composed of seven units of D-(+)-glucopyranose joined by α-1,4 bonds, which is obtained from starch. Its singular trunk conical shape organization, with a well-defined cavity, provides an adequate environment for several types of molecules to be included. Complexation changes the properties of the guest molecules and can increase their stability and bioavailability, protecting against degradation, and reducing their volatility. Thanks to its versatility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, β-CD is widespread in many research and industrial applications. In this review, we summarize the role of β-CD and its derivatives in the textile industry. First, we present some general physicochemical characteristics, followed by its application in the areas of dyeing, finishing, and wastewater treatment. The review covers the role of β-CD as an auxiliary agent in dyeing, and as a matrix for dye adsorption until chemical modifications are applied as a finishing agent. Finally, new perspectives about its use in textiles, such as in smart materials for microbial control, are presented.

Facile Synthesis of Tin Dioxide Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Degradation of Congo Red Dye in Aqueous Solution

This research work reports an approach used to prepare a SnO2 photocatalyst by precipitation and calcination pathways and describes an investigation of the effects of preparation parameters on SnO2 yield. The SnO2 photocatalyst was further used for the photocatalytic degradation of Congo red (CR) dye, and the removal efficiency was optimized using response surface methodology. The results indicate that the SnO2 photocatalyst yield was the highest in 0.05 M of the precursor, stannous chloride and 28 wt % ammonia as the precipitant, pH 10, at 30 °C. The transmission electron microscopy results of the SnO2 photocatalyst illustrate that the average particle size was mainly around 30–50 nm and had a solid spherical shape. The X-ray diffraction results reveal that the prepared sample had a highly crystalline SnO2 rutile crystal structure. The prediction and experimental results of the Response surface methodology (RSM) indicate that, when the reaction time was 97 min, the operating temperature was 47 °C, the photocatalyst dosage was 751 mg/L, and the optimal degradation rate of the CR dye was 100%. After five consecutive photodegradation reactions, the degradation rate remained at 100%. The results demonstrated that the SnO2 photocatalyst prepared in this study possesses excellent reusability.

Anionic dye uptake via composite using chitosan-polyacrylamide hydrogel as matrix containing TiO2 nanoparticles; comprehensive adsorption studies

In the present study, TiO₂ nanoparticles dispersed in chitosan grafted polyacrylamide matrix (TiO₂-PAM-CS) was synthesized using in situ technique, and applied for the uptake of Sirius yellow K-CF dye from aqueous solution. The synthesized nano-composite was characterized by FE-SEM, TEM, XRD and FT-IR analysis. The effect of significant parameters such as pH, dose, time and temperature in batch adsorption experiments were investigated. The adsorption process was pH dependent and the optimum value of pH was obtained 2 with 96.81% dye removal at 40 °C. The equilibrium data were compatible well with the Langmuir isotherm having q_m value of 1000 mg/g. The Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm and thermodynamic studies prove that the adsorption is physical, endothermic and spontaneous. Kinetic study also verifies that pseudo second order kinetic model is the predominant model. The interactions between amin groups of polyacrylamide-chitosan (PAM-CS) composite in from of NH₃⁺ and molecules of anionic dye via hydrogen bond formation (Dye-NH₃⁺), also electrostatic interactions between Ti⁺⁴ available in PAM-CS composite and anionic dye (free energy of 1.66 kJ/mol calculated from D-R model) govern the adsorption mechanism. The reusability test showe that TiO₂-PAM-CS composite can be renewed easily with HCl solution as an efficient adsorbent for practical wastewater treatment.

Performance Evaluation and Optimization of Dyes Removal using Rice Bran-Based Magnetic Composite Adsorbent

Although several studies have explored green adsorbent synthesized from many types of agriculture waste, this study represents the first attempt to prepare an environmentally friendly rice bran/SnO₂/Fe₃O₄-based absorbent with economic viability and material reusability, for the promotion of sustainable development. Here, rice bran/SnO₂/Fe₃O₄ composites were successfully synthesized and applied for adsorption of reactive blue 4 (RB4) and crystal violet (CV) dyes in aqueous solutions. The adsorption data were well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities of the RB4 and CV dyes as indicated by the Langmuir isotherm model were 218.82 and 159.24 mg/g, respectively. As results of response surface methodology (RSM) showed, the quadratic model was appropriate to predict the performance of RB4 dye removal. The findings exhibited that an optimum removal rate of 98% was achieved at 60 °C for pH 2.93 and adsorption time of 360 min. Comparative evaluation of different agricultural wastes indicated that the rice bran/SnO₂/Fe₃O₄ composite appeared to be a highly promising material in terms of regeneration and reusability, and showed that the composite is a potential adsorbent for dye removal from aqueous solutions. Overall, the study results clearly suggest that an adsorbent synthesized from rice bran/SnO₂/Fe₃O₄ magnetic particle composites provides encouraging adsorption capacity for practical applications for environmental prevention.

Cyclodextrin modified filter paper for removal of cationic dyes/Cu ions from aqueous solutions

A filter paper was functionalized with β-cyclodextrin and citric acid via esterification reaction for the removal of dyes and Cu ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption capacity and removal performance of the modified filter paper (MFP) was investigated using static and dynamic adsorption experiments. The static adsorption data fit well the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, and the adsorption capacity of Methylene Blue (MB), Brilliant Green (BG), Rhodamine-B (RB) and Cu(II) over the MFP were 124.6 mg/g, 130.4 mg/g, 99.7 mg/g and 39.1 mg/g, respectively, which are much higher than the unmodified filter paper (below 2 mg/g). Even better, the decolorization performance and Cu(II) removal of MFP are remarkable in dynamic adsorption. The effluent can reach the National Standard for dyeing and finishing of textile industry of China after three cycles in a continuous filtration-adsorption system. This method provides a new pathway to achieve high efficiency removal of dyes and metal ions from wastewater.

Rapid and high-performance adsorptive removal of hazardous acridine orange from aqueous environment using Abelmoschus esculentus seed powder: Single- and multi-parameter optimization studies

In this research, the performance of naturally abundant lignocellulosic by-product, Abelmoschus esculentus, and its processed seed powder referred as AESP, as a potential biosorbent for the removal of acridine orange (AO) from the aqueous environment was examined. The AESP biosorbent was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and pH_ZPC analyses. The average size of the biosorbent according to particle size distribution analysis was found to be ∼132 μm. The batch adsorption experiments were conducted by altering the parameters such as contact time, solution pH, biosorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, stirring speed and temperature. Sorption of cationic AO dye onto AESP was found to be rapid, and the equilibrium condition reached within 30 min. The isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Sips), kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intra-particle diffusion, Bangham and modified-Freundlich models) and thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated. High values of determination coefficients (R²) and minimal values of non-linear error functions (i.e. HYBRD, RMSE, MPSD, ARE, APE and χ²) indicated that experimental data were best fitted with Sips isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model. Accordingly, the maximum loading capacity of AESP was found to be 259.4, 284.3 and 346.5 mg/g for the temperatures of 15, 30 and 45 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of AO onto the AESP surface was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Besides these, the central composite experimental design (CCD) superimposed with response surface methodology (RSM) modeling was also employed to investigate the effect of four significant parameters (solution pH, contact time, initial AO concentration and AESP dosage) and their interaction-term effects on the adsorption capacity of AESP and to formulate the mathematical model for the experimental data using multi-variate statistical analysis. Maximum dye uptake capacity under the optimum conditions of variables (pH 8.96, contact time 32.06 min, initial dye concentration 867.71 mg/L and AESP dosage 1.89 g/L) was 312.1 mg/g at temperature 30 °C, and it was found to be very close to the experimentally determined values (313.4 ± 0.057 mg/g). The promising reusability potential of AESP using 0.1 M HCl, implied that, the lignocellulosic biosorbent AESP might be helpful for the appropriate designing of the environmental-friendly purification systems.

A Novel Cyclodextrin-Functionalized Hybrid Silicon Wastewater Nano-Adsorbent Material and Its Adsorption Properties

A novel cyclodextrin-functionalized hybrid silicon nano-adsorbent material (6-EA-β-CD-Si) was synthesized via the nucleophilic substitution method. The structure was detected by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray, thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Results reveal that the BET surface area of 6-EA-β-CD-Si is 240 m²/g and the average pore size is 4.16 nm. The adsorption properties of 6-EA-β-CD-Si onto methylene blue (MB) were studied and fitted with adsorption kinetic models. Both the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model were fitted with well shows that the multi-layer adsorption with chemisorption and physisorption co-existing in the system. The maximum adsorption capacities are 39.37, 39.21, 36.90, and 36.36 mg/g at temperatures 303, 313, 323, and 333 K, respectively. The maximum removal rate of MB could reach 99.5%, indicating the potential application value of 6-EA-β-CD-Si in wastewater treatment. The adsorption mechanisms of 6-EA-β-CD-Si showed that the hydrophobic cave of β-CD plays an important role on the adsorption of MB.
