Progress in layered double hydroxides (LDHs): Synthesis and application in adsorption, catalysis and photoreduction

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, have attracted significant attention in energy and environmental applications due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. These materials possess a unique structure with surface hydroxyl groups, tunable properties, and high stability, making them highly desirable. In this review, the synthesis and functionalization of LDHs have been explored including co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods. Furthermore, extensive research on LDH application in toxic pollutant removal has shown that modifying or functionalizing LDHs using materials such as activated carbon, polymers, and inorganics is crucial for achieving efficient pollutant adsorption, improved cyclic performance, as well as effective catalytic oxidation of organics and photoreduction. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the field of LDHs and LDH-based composites for water and wastewater treatment. It critically discusses and explains both direct and indirect synthesis and modification techniques, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, this review critically discusses and explains the potential of LDH-based composites as absorbents. Importantly, it focuses on the capability of LDH and LDH-based composites in heterogeneous catalysis, including the Fenton reaction, Fenton-like reactions, photocatalysis, and photoreduction, for the removal of organic dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals. The mechanisms involved in pollutant removal, such as adsorption, electrostatic interaction, complexation, and degradation, are thoroughly explained. Finally, this study outlines future research directions in the field.

Advancements in textile dye removal: a critical review of layered double hydroxides and clay minerals as efficient adsorbents

The textile industry is responsible for producing large volumes of wastewater that contain a wide variety of dye compounds. This poses a significant environmental hazard and risks harming both ecosystems and living organisms. This review study explores the advancements in adsorption research for dye removal, with a particular emphasis on the development of various adsorbents. The article provides detailed insights into the toxicity and classification of dyes, different treatment techniques, and the characteristics of numerous adsorbents, with special attention to layered double hydroxides (LDH) and clay minerals. A comprehensive list of adsorbents, encompassing natural materials, agricultural by-products, industrial waste, and activated carbon, is discussed for effective removal of different dyes. Furthermore, the review extensively examines the influence of various adsorption variables, such as pH, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, contact time, ionic strength, and pore volume of the adsorbent. Additionally, the application of response surface methodology for optimizing adsorption variables is elucidated. Commonly, electrostatic attraction, π-π interactions, n-π interactions, van der Waals forces, H-bonding, and pore diffusion play a major role in adsorption mechanism. The review also found that LDH can eliminate a wide range of dyes from wastewater, achieving excellent uptake capacities often exceeding 500 mg/g, with a removal efficiency of 99%. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic equations gave the best fit to most of the adsorption data. Overall, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners seeking sustainable solutions to address the environmental challenges posed by textile dye contamination.

Starch modified NiFe layered double hydroxide composites for better adsorption and photocatalytic removal of reactive dye and piroxicam-20 drug

One of the most omnipresent problems to the environment is the efficient removal of textile dyes and non-steroidal drugs from wastewater. For this purpose, renewable, sustainable, and biodegradable biopolymers are used. In this study, starch (S) modified NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) composites were successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation method and have been examined as a catalyst for the effective adsorption of reactive blue 19 dye, reactive orange 16 dye, and piroxicam-20 NSAID from wastewater and photocatalytic degradation of reactive red 120 dye. The physicochemical properties of the prepared catalyst were assessed by XRD, FTIR, HRTEM, FE-SEM, DLS, ZETA, and BET. The coarser and more porous micrographs are shown in FESEM, indicating the homogeneous dispersion of layered double hydroxide on starch polymer chains. The S/NiFe-LDH composites have a slightly greater S_BET (6.736 m²/g) than NiFe LDH (4.78 m²/g). The S/NiFe-LDH composite shows remarkable ability in the removal of reactive dyes. The band gap value of NiFe LDH, S/NiFe LDH (0.5:1), and S/NiFe LDH (1:1) composites was calculated as 2.28 eV, 1.80 eV, and 1.74 eV, respectively. The q_max assessed from Langmuir isotherm for removal of piroxicam-20 drug, reactive blue 19 dye, and reactive orange 16 was 2840 mg/g, 149.47 mg/g, and 182.4 mg/g, respectively. The activated chemical adsorption without product desorption is predicted by the Elovich kinetic model. With reactive red 120 dye, S/NiFe-LDH shows photocatalytic degradation within 3 h of irradiation of visible light with 90% removal efficiency and follows a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The scavenging experiment confirms the involvement of electrons and holes in photocatalytic degradation. With a little decline in adsorption capacity up to five cycles, starch/NiFe LDH was easily regenerated. So, the suitable adsorbent required for wastewater treatment is nanocomposites of LDHs and starch as they enhance the chemical and physical attributes of the composite structure with greater absorption capabilities.

Textural properties and adsorption behavior of Zn-Mg-Al layered double hydroxide upon crystal violet dye removal as a low cost, effective, and recyclable adsorbent

The preparation of adsorbents plays a vital role in the adsorption method. In particular, many adsorbents with high specific surface areas and unique shapes are essential for the adsorption strategy. A Zn-Mg-Al/layer double hydroxide (LDH) was designed in this study using a simple co-precipitation process. Adsorbent based on Zn-Mg-Al/LDH was used to remove crystal violet (CV) from the wastewater. The impacts of the initial dye concentration, pH, and temperature on CV adsorption performance were systematically examined. The adsorbents were analyzed both before and after adsorption using FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The roughness parameters and surface morphologies of the produced LDH were estimated using 3D SEM images. Under the best conditions (dose of adsorbent = 0.07 g and pH = 9), the maximum adsorption capacity has been achieved. Adsorption kinetics studies revealed that the reaction that led to the adsorption of CV dye onto Zn-Mg-Al/LDH was a pseudo-second-order model. Additionally, intraparticle diffusion suggests that Zn-Mg-Al/LDH has a fast diffusion constant for CV molecules (0.251 mg/(g min^1/2)). Furthermore, as predicted by the Langmuir model, the maximal Zn-Mg-Al/LDH adsorption capacity of CV was 64.80 mg/g. The CV dimensionless separation factor (R_L) onto Zn-Mg-Al/LDH was 0.769, indicating that adsorption was favorable. The effect of temperature was performed at 25, 35, and 45 °C in order to establish the thermodynamic parameters ∆H^o, ∆S^o, and ∆G^o. The computed values indicated exothermic and spontaneous adsorption processes. The study presented here might be used to develop new adsorbents with enhanced adsorption capabilities for the purpose of protecting the water environment.

Engineered biochar supported layered double hydroxide-cellulose nanocrystals composite-: Synthesis, characterization and azo dye removal performance

In this work, engineered biochar decorated layered double hydroxides and cellulose nanocrystals (B-CuFe-CNC) biocomposites were synthesized by the facile ultrasonicated-co-precipitation technique. The biocomposite was investigated for purification of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) dye from water. The characterization results showed that the presence of CNC in biochar-layered double hydroxides resulted in a two-dimensional rod-like structure with excellent crystallinity, improved surface functionalities, and provides an attractive platform for the enhanced adsorption of azo anionic dye molecules. The adsorption system was appropriately demonstrated by the BBD-RSM (R² > 0.994). The biocomposite exhibited higher EBT adsorption in the acidic pH range (2-5) due to strong electrostatic and chemical interactions. The kinetic and isotherm results were well demonstrated by pseudo-second order, Freundlich, and Redlich Peterson models. The maximum adsorption capacity of biocomposite was 876.2 mg/g achieved within 45 min. The spectroscopic analyses imply that the high removal of EBT by biocomposite is mainly governed by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and chemical/metal complexation mechanisms. The biocomposite maintained high EBT removal after six successive adsorption cycles and excellent dye adsorption in the different water matrices. The results suggest that tailoring biochar properties with layered double hydroxide and CNC is a promising way for the enhanced removal of dye contaminants from wastewater.

Efficient Removal of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) Dye and Chromium (Cr) by Hydrotalcite-Derived Mg-Ca-Al Mixed Metal Oxide Composite

Eriochrome Black T (EBT) and chromium (Cr) are considered to be potential pollutants due to their toxicity and severe impact on the environment. In the current study, hydrotalcite-derived Mg-Ca-Al-LDO mixed metal oxide composite was prepared using a conventional co-precipitation method and explored in terms of the removal of Cr and EBT dye from aqueous solution in a batch mode adsorption process. The prepared Mg-Ca-Al-LDH, Mg-Ca-Al-LDO and spent Mg-Ca-Al-LDO adsorbents were characterized to propose the adsorption mechanism. Different adsorption parameters were examined, such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, pH, reaction temperature and contact time. The EBT adsorption kinetic results matched strongly with the pseudo-second-order model for both Cr (R2 = 0.991) and EBT (R2 = 0.999). The Langmuir isotherm model exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 65.5 mg/g and 150.3 mg/g for Cr and EBT, respectively. The structure and morphology results obtained after Cr and EBT dye adsorption reveal that the adsorption mechanism is associated with electrostatic interactions and surface complexation of Cr and EBT dye with Mg-Ca-Al-LDO surface functional groups. Moreover, more than 84% of the initial adsorption capacity of EBT and Cr can be achieved on the Mg-Ca-Al-LDO surface after five adsorption/desorption cycles. Finally, the Mg-Ca-Al-LDO mixed metal oxide composite can be potentially used as a cost-effective adsorbent for wastewater treatment processes.

Recyclable Composite Membrane of Polydopamine and Graphene Oxide-Modified Polyacrylonitrile for Organic Dye Molecule and Heavy Metal Ion Removal

Developing efficient and recyclable membranes for water contaminant removal still remains a challenge in terms of practical applications. Herein, a recyclable membrane constituted of polyacrylonitrile-graphene and oxide-polydopamine was fabricated and demonstrated efficient adsorption capacities with respect to heavy metal ions (62.9 mg g^-1 of Cu²⁺ ion, CuSO₄ 50 mg L^-1) and organic dye molecules (306.7 mg g^-1 of methylene blue and 339.6 mg g^-1 of eriochrome black T, MB/EBT 50 mg L^-1). The polyacrylonitrile fibers provide the skeleton of the membrane, while the graphene oxide and polydopamine endow the membrane with hydrophilicity, which is favorable for the adsorption of pollutants in water. Benefitting from the protonation and deprotonation effects of graphene oxide and polydopamine, the obtained membrane demonstrated promotion of the selective adsorption or desorption of pollutant molecules. This guarantees that the adsorbed pollutant molecules can be desorbed promptly from the membrane through simple pH adjustment, ensuring the reusability of the membrane. After ten adsorption-desorption cycles, the membrane could still maintain a desirable adsorption capacity. In addition, compared with other, similar membranes reported, this composite membrane displays the highest mechanical stability. This work puts forward an alternative strategy for recyclable membrane design and expects to promote the utilization of membrane techniques in practical wastewater treatment.

Enhanced removal of Eriochrome Black T from water using biochar/layered double hydroxide/chitosan hybrid composite: Performance evaluation and optimization using BBD-RSM approach

In this research work, a novel hybrid composite consisting of biochar (B), layered double hydroxide (CuFe) and chitosan (CS) (B-CuFe-CS) was produced using an ultrasonication-assisted co-precipitation method. The resultant composite was employed for adsorptive removal of Eriochrome black T (EBT) from water. Physicochemical characterization indicated that the B-CuFe-CS containing 10 wt % CS exhibited a heterogeneous structure with better crystallographic and textural characteristics. The B-CuFe-CS with abundant surface functionalities (-CO, -C-O, -OH, -NO_3, and MMO), facilitates faster and enhanced removal of the EBT. The kinetic results showed better fitting to the pseudo-second order model, and equilibrium was achieved within 30 min. Equilibrium data was well explained by Langmuir and Redlich Peterson isotherm models (R² > 0.98), indicating the EBT removal onto B-CuFe-CS followed monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was 806.4 mg/g, which was higher than pristine B-CuFe (476.19 mg/g) and many other adsorbents. The spectroscopic analysis (FTIR and XPS) and experimental results suggested that EBT adsorption is mainly governed by electrostatic, chemical and anion-exchange interactions. It is evident from these results that coupling B-CuFe composite with bio-filler (chitosan) resulted in an efficient bio-adsorbent to effectively purify dye-contaminated water streams.

A practical method to remove perfluorooctanoic acid from aqueous media using layer double hydride system: a prospect for environmental remediation

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an organic compound that is persistent and very toxic to living organisms and the environment. In this study, two kinds of Mg-Al-layered double hydroxides (namely LDH-1 and 2) were synthesized using hydrothermal and dry grinding methods and used to adsorb PFOA from aqueous solution. The kinetic study revealed that a pseudo-2nd order model was the best method for describing the kinetics of sorption, which could emphasize the chemical interaction between PFOAs and LDHs. Among the models tested, the Freundlich model was the best fit for the sorption isotherms. The removal rates of PFOA adsorption by LDH-1 and LDH-2 were 90% and 98.9%, respectively, in the lowest time compared with similar past studies using different adsorbents. The currently synthesized LDHs showed the least equilibrium time, without thermal treatment and the need for activation. The research bears prospects for removing PFOA from aqueous media, thereby demonstrating the potential of employing synthesized LDHs in a fixed-bed filter for the environmental remediation of PFOA-contaminated wastewater bodies.

Recent progress in the synthesis of Layered Double Hydroxides and their application for the adsorptive removal of dyes: A review

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, are lamellar inorganic solids with a brucite-like structure and consist of positively charged metal hydroxide sheets intercalated by anions and water molecules. Choice of LDH is beneficial as it displays properties like simple synthesis procedures, adjustable structure, stability, large surface area, homogeneous positive charge distribution over the surface, interplanar spacing, and versatility to synthesize a variety of composites. Due to these properties LDHs act as efficient adsorbents for wastewater treatment. This review presents a detailed overview of the removal of hazardous organic dyes using different LDHs and LDH-hybrids/composites. The review also incorporates methods of synthesis of various LDHs and composites and the effect of their morphology on dye removal capacity. The effects of adsorption variables such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of dye, contact time on the adsorption of these materials are also explained along with adsorption isotherms, kinetics and operative mechanisms. This article incorporates 156 references, majority of which have been taken from the available literature of last 5 years.

Adsorptive removal of eriochrome black T (EBT) dye by using surface active low cost zinc oxide nanoparticles: A comparative overview

The ecological toxicity imparted by non-biodegradable organic dyes has been considered as a major risk to handle in front of mankind. In this view, the low-cost zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were facially synthesized by coating the surface with surfactant (CTAB) and ionic liquid (BMTF) molecules for the effective removal of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) from aqueous media. Various advanced characterization techniques have given insight into the morphological features, crystalline structure and physio-chemical properties of as-synthesized ZnO-NPs. The systematic analysis of the adsorption isotherms and kinetics models specifies that the adsorption of EBT follow Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The intraparticle diffusion model displayed a linear relationship (R² = 0.98, 0.97 and 0.94 for BMTF@ZnO, CTAB@ZnO and bare ZnO-NPs), which shows that pore diffusion rate is affected by surface modification and effects the overall EBT adsorption process. Furthermore, after the removal of 87% and 84% of EBT dye by BMTF@ZnO-NPs and CTAB@ZnO-NPs, the fabricated nanoadsorbents of ZnO were successfully regenerated and reused after the treatments up to four times. The adsorption aptitude of ZnO-NPs towards EBT dye was systematically explored in real wastewater samples and interference study of inorganic metallic salts was also performed. The toxicity estimations of the treated dye solutions were made using floral and fungal activities, to ascertain their non-toxic nature before releasing into the environment. These outcomes have supported the immense potential of ZnO-NPs towards the removal of EBT in a cost effective manner.

Effective Adsorptive Removal of Methylene Blue from Water by Didodecyldimethylammonium Bromide-Modified Brown Clay

In the present investigation, brown clay (BC) was modified with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) to produce a sorbent (DDAB-BC), which was characterized and applied for sorption of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous media. BC was functionalized using DDAB by cation exchange of the DDAB moiety with positive ions existing inside the interlayer spaces of the BC. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed that the d-spacing of DDAB-BC became wider (3.39 Å) than that of BC (3.33 Å). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were exploited to explore the functional groups and morphological structure of sorbents, respectively. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of DDAB-BC were determined as 124.6841 m²/g, 0.316780 cm³/g, and 8.75102 nm, respectively. Batch sorption investigations were carried out to determine the optimum experimental conditions, using the one-factor one-time procedure. The sorption of MB on DDAB-BC strongly obeyed the Langmuir isotherm and agreed well with pseudo-second-order kinetics. Sorption of MB onto DDAB-BC showed maximum efficiency (∼98%) and maximum sorption capacity (∼164 mg/g) at optimal values of pertinent factors: dye concentration (100 mg/L), pH (7), and temperature (55 °C). Sorption isothermal studies predicted that removal of MB on DDAB-BC follows multilayer sorption at higher MB dye concentrations and monolayer sorption at lower MB dye concentrations.

Enhanced removal of Eriochrome Black T in wastewater by zirconium-based MOF/graphene oxide

The zirconium-based MOF/graphene oxide (UiO-66-NH2/GO) composites were prepared by ultrasonic dispersing different amounts of graphene oxide (GO) in a well-dissolved zirconium tetrachloride/H2BDC-NH2 mixture, obtaining 2 wt% (UiO-66-NH2/GO-1), 5 wt% (UiO-66-NH2/GO-2), and 10 wt% (UiO-66-NH2/GO-3) GO composites. The products were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, Raman, UV, XPS, and Zeta potential. Adsorption experiments on simulated Eriochrome Black T (EBT) printing and dyeing wastewater were carried out using UiO-66-NH2/GO, and the optimal conditions for adsorption were obtained by exploring the effects of initial EBT concentration, time, pH, and salt ionic strength. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, mechanism, and regeneration were also researched. The adsorption behavior was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and fully compliant with pseudo secondary dynamics model. The adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH2/GO-2 was found to be the highest of the three products, which was 263.158 mg/g. Therefore, the UiO-66-NH2/GO-2 composite was considered to be an excellent adsorbent for the adsorption of EBT from organic dye wastewater.

Ceria decorated porous diatom-xerogel as an effective adsorbent for the efficient removal of Eriochrome Black T

Diatomaceous earth or diatom (DE) are naturally available and low cost micro particles with distinct porous structure were used as an adsorbent for the removal of a hazardous dye, Eriochrome Black T (EBT). The surface modification of these DE were performed by sol-gel and hydrothermal methods to obtain a series of adsorbents such as diatom-ceria (DC), diatom-silica xerogel (DX), and diatom-silica xerogel-ceria (DXC). A cauliflower like morphology structure of ceria was observed on DE and DX. The adsorption performance of EBT was conducted by varying various parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time and ionic strength. The materials DE, DC, DX and DXC showed the EBT removal efficiencies of 52, 77, 20, and 93%, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of DE, DC, DX and DXC was found to be 13.83, 23.64, 0.2 and 47.02 mgg^-1 for the adsorption of EBT, respectively. The selectivity of EBT towards DXC was evaluated by treating a mixture of anionic dyes. The dye removal experiments was performed in presence of inorganic salts, however the presence of these salts did not affect the removal efficiency of DXC. Furthermore, the reusability of DXC was studied by recycling it up to 5 times and even at 5th cycle a removal efficiency of ∼66.8% was found. Thus, these studies demonstrate that the DXC material could be a promising candidate for the removal of EBT via adsorption for real time application in water treatment.

Efficient removal of Alizarin Red S from aqueous solution by polyethyleneimine functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes

Alizarin Red S (ARS) has been extensively used in the dyeing industry. In order to effectively remove the ARS form dyeing wastewater, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes (PEI@MCNTs) adsorbent was successfully prepared and its adsorption performances were also investigated in detail. The PEI@MCNTs could efficiently remove the ARS from acidic aqueous solution (pH ≤ 6.0) within 40 min under room temperature. Benefiting from a large number of adsorption sites and multiple interactions, PEI@MCNTs possessed high selectivity towards ARS with spontaneous adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of PEI@MCNTs for ARS was 196.08 mg g^-1 obtained from Langmuir isotherm, higher than that of available conventional adsorbents. Moreover, the PEI@MCNTs could be easily collected by an external magnet, and then effectively regenerated through 10 mM NaOH solution. The prepared PEI@MCNTs could be considered as the promising adsorbent for the removal of anthraquinone dyes in large-scale wastewater treatment.

Date palm ash-MgAl-layered double hydroxide composite: sustainable adsorbent for effective removal of methyl orange and eriochrome black-T from aqueous phase

Date palm ash (DPA) and MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) composites were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The DPA-MgAl-LDH (DPA/MgAl) composites were employed for the removal of methyl orange (MO) and eriochrome black-T (EBT) from aqueous phase. Incorporation of 33.33% (w/w) DPA into the layers of MgAl increased the surface area from 44.46 to 140.65 m²/g, which leads to the improved adsorption performance. The maximum adsorption capacity of DPA/MgAl (1:2) at 298 K was 242.98 and 425.16 (mg/g) for MO and EBT, respectively. The adsorption data of dyes were adequately fitted by a pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm model. The composite showed excellent reusability performance up to three cycles. Addition of DPA into MgAl-LDH resulted in an effective low-cost adsorbent for decontamination of dyes from wastewater. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Polyaspartate extraction of cadmium ions from contaminated soil: Evaluation and optimization using central composite design

The occurrences of heavy metal contaminated sites and soils and the need for devising environmentally friendly solutions have become global issues of serious concern. In this study, polyaspartate (a highly biodegradable agent) was synthesized using L-Aspartic acid via a new modified thermal procedure and employed for extraction of cadmium ions (Cd) from contaminated soil. Response surface methodology approach using 3⁵ full faced centered central composite design was employed for modeling, evaluating and optimizing the influence of polyaspartate concentration (36-145mM), polyaspartate/soil ratio (5-25), initial heavy metal concentration (100-500mg/kg), initial pH (3-6) and extraction time (6-24h) on Cd ions extracted into the polyaspartate solution and its residual concentration in the treated soil. The Cd extraction efficacy obtained reached up to 98.8%. Increase in Cd extraction efficiency was associated with increase in the polyaspartate and Cd concentration coupled with lower polyaspertate/soil ratio and initial pH. Under the optimal conditions characterized with minimal utilization of the polyaspartate and high Cd ions removal, the extractible Cd in the polyaspartate solution reached up to 84.4mg/L which yielded 85% Cd extraction efficacy. This study demonstrates the suitability of using polyaspartate as an effective environmentally friendly chelating agent for Cd extraction from contaminated soils.
