Abstract
The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a crucial electrochemical process for the proposed hydrogen economy since it has the potential to provide pure hydrogen for fuel cells. Nowadays, hydrogen electroproduction is considerably expensive, so promoting the development of new non-noble catalysts for the cathode of alkaline electrolyzers appears as a suitable way to reduce the costs of this technology. In this sense, a series of tungsten-based carbide materials have been synthesized by the urea-glass route as candidates to improve the HER in alkaline media. Moreover, two different pyridinium-based ionic liquids were employed to modify the surface of the carbide grains and control the amount and nature of their surface species. The main results indicate that the catalyst surface composition is modified in the hybrid materials, which are then distinguished by the appearance of tungsten suboxide structures. This implies the action of ionic liquids as reducing agents. Consequently, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) is used to precisely determine the onset potentials and rate-determining steps (RDS) for the HER in alkaline media. Remarkably, the modified surfaces show high catalytic performance (overpotentials between 45 and 60 mV) and RDS changes from Heyrovsky-Volmer to Heyrovsky as the surface oxide structures get reduced. H2O molecule reduction is then faster at tungsten suboxide, which allows the formation of the adsorbed hydrogen at the surface, boosting the catalytic activity and the kinetics of the alkaline HER.

Abstract
The rapid and sensitive voltammetric determination of organic UV filters benzophenone-3 (BP-3) and avobenzone (AVO) was performed by an ionic liquid carbon paste electrode (IL-CPE). Namely, the synthesized pyridinium-based ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylpyridinium chloride ([N-C4-3C1Py]Cl) and 1-ethoxyethyl-3-methylpyridinium chloride ([N-C2OC2-3C1Py]Cl) were compared as bulk CPE modifiers for BP-3 determination. [N-C4-3C1Py]Cl-CPE showed more favorable interactions with the target analyte, and it was tested for AVO determination, too. Cyclic voltammetric (CV) studies suggested that the irreversible electrode reaction is adsorption controlled in the case of both UV filters. Also, the square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetric (SW-AdSV) method was optimized for quantifying selected UV filters. In the model solutions, the linear calibration curve was obtained by the SW-AdSV method in the concentration range from 0.05 to 0.89 μg mL-1 at pH 3.0 for BP-3 (Eacc = -0.7 V, tacc = 100 s), and from 0.05 to 1.77 μg mL-1 at pH 11.98 for AVO (Eacc = 0.2 V, tacc = 100 s). The evaluated limit of detection (LOD) was 0.015 μg mL-1 in both cases, while the relative standard deviation (RSD) was lower than 1.5%. The affordable IL-based voltammetric sensor fulfills the main requirements for application in real samples due to an adequate selectivity towards selected analytes in the presence of interferents usually found in swimming pool water. Therefore, the BP-3 and AVO were quantified in a swimming pool water matrix with good repeatability and recovery. The obtained results demonstrate an excellent potential of the IL-CPEs, especially of the [N-C4-3C1Py]Cl-CPE, for determining selected UV filters in various real samples.

Abstract
Influence of the cation-anion interaction (expressed as internal hydrogen bonds) on the nonlinear optical properties (dipole moment, polarizability, anisotropy of polarizability and first-order hyperpolarizability) for the ionic liquids pyridinium hydrogen sulfate (PHS) and pyridinium bis(dihydrogen phosphate) (P2HP) was investigated in this paper. It was achieved analyzing vibrational modes (FT-IR) and electronic transitions (UV-vis) in PHS and P2HP. Molecular geometry of the title compounds was optimized by means of density functional theory calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level. Structural analysis exposed stronger internal hydrogen bonds (H7···O3 and H18···O4) between cationic and anionic fragments in the pyridinium hydrogen sulfate than these (H26···O4 and H25···O12) in pyridinium bis(dihydrogen phosphate). These observations are confirmed by FT-IR and UV-vis methods, where: (i) the infrared bands due to H···O and N-C interactions in P2HP appear at lower frequencies than the same ones in the spectrum of PHS and (ii) the n → π* electron transitions in PHS are more pronounced in comparison with these in P2HP. Based on the weaker cation-anion interaction in P2HP with respect to PHS, the former one is characterized with a remarkably higher first-order hyperpolarizability value. Hence, the ionic liquid P2HP was referred as a better nonlinear optical material than PHS.

Abstract
The glassy, supercooled, and normal liquid states of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide series [CnC1im][TCM] (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16) were investigated by dielectric and mechanical (rheological) experiments supplemented by X-ray diffraction. The conductivity relaxation was found to be accompanied by a pronounced secondary relaxation. However, based on ambient and high-pressure results as well as the coupling model, we assumed that the latter one can not be classified as Johari-Goldstein relaxation. Moreover, the studies on the nanoscale organization of ionic liquids indicated that 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ILs begin to form nanoscale aggregates when the alkyl chain of the cation has six carbon atoms.

Abstract
This study performs a screening of potential Ionic Liquids (ILs) for the extraction of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) compounds by the calculation of capacity values. For this purpose, a Conductor-Like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) was employed to study the molecular structures of the ILs, and therefore, predict their extraction potential. The capacity values of 22 anions combined with 16 cations based ILs, were investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of ILs in the extraction of DHA. It was found that among the investigated ILs, a combination of tetramethyl ammonium with SO4 or Cl was the best fit for DHA extraction, followed by pyrrolidinium, imidazolium, pyridinium and piperidinium. Furthermore, it was observed that the extraction capacity and the selectivity of ILs decreased with an increase in alkyl chain length; therefore, ethyl chain-ILs, with the shortest chain lengths, were found to be most suitable for DHA extraction. The predicted results were validated through the experimentally calculated extraction yield of a DHA compound from Nannochloropsis sp. Microalgae. Five selected ILs, namely [EMIM][Cl], [BMIM][Cl], [TMAm][Cl], [EMPyr][Br] and [EMPyrro][Br], were selected from COSMO-RS for empirical extraction purposes, and the validation results pinpointed the good prediction capabilities of COSMO-RS. The findings in this study can simplify the process of selecting suitable ILs for DHA extraction and reduce the number of required empirical evaluations.

Abstract
Asphaltenes are heavy petroleum crude oil components which limit the production of petroleum crude oil due to their aggregation and their stabilization for all petroleum crude oil water emulsions. The present study aimed to modify the chemical structures of isolated asphaltenes by converting them into amphiphilic polymers containing ionic liquid moieties (PILs) to demulsify the emulsion and replace the asphaltene layers surrounding the oil or water droplets in petroleum crude oil emulsions. The literature survey indicated that no modification occurred to produce the PILs from the asphaltenes. In this respect, the asphaltenes were modified via oxidation of the lower aliphatic chain through carboxylation followed by conversion to asphaltene acid chloride that reacted with ethoxylated N-alkyl pyridinium derivatives. Moreover, the carboxylation of asphaltenes was carried out through the Diels–Alder reaction with maleic anhydride that was linked with ethoxylated N-alkyl pyridinium derivatives to produce amphiphilic asphaltene PILs. The produced PILs from asphaltenes acid chloride and maleic anhydride were designated as AIL and AIL-2. The chemical structure and thermal stability of the polymeric asphaltene ionic liquids were evaluated. The modified structure of asphaltenes AIL and AIL-2 exhibited different thermal characteristics involving glass transition temperatures (Tg) at −68 °C and −45 °C, respectively. The new asphaltenes ionic liquids were adsorbed at the asphaltenes surfaces to demulsify the heavy petroleum crude emulsions. The demulsification data indicated that the mixing of AIL and AIL-2 100 at different ratios with ethoxylated N-alkyl pyridinium were demulsified with 100% of the water from different compositions of O:W emulsions 50:50, 90:10, and 10:90. The demulsification times for the 50:50, 90:10, and 10:90 O:W emulsions were 120, 120, and 60 min, respectively. The interaction of the PILs with asphaltene and mechanism of demulsification was also investigated.

Abstract
Regulating the states of hydrogen bonds in ionic liquids (ILs) is an effective way to improve their catalytic performance. In this paper, disulfonic-functionalized acidic ionic liquids (DSFAILs) were synthesized successfully, including novel SO3H-functionalized binuclear IL (bis[3-(CH2)3SO3H-1-(CH2)2-Im][HSO4]2). For the biodiesel synthesis, compared with the traditional ILs catalysts, DSFAILs bis[(3-(CH2)3SO3H-1-(CH2)2-Im][HSO4]2, [Im(N (CH2)3SO3H)2][HSO4]) had higher catalytic activity even under mild reaction conditions. Using the density functional theory (DFT) method, the role of hydrogen bonds in different SO3H-functionalized acidic ionic liquids (SFAILs) was explored. The forms of hydrogen bonds existing in different ILs directly determine their acidity. It suggested that the forming status of the active sites (hydrogen bonds) were diverse in different SFAILs. Also, deep ionization of the hydrogen atoms from the cation-anion strong interaction could increase the acidity and catalytic performance of SFAILs. From this, the structure-activity relationship between the SFAILs structures and the catalytic activity of methyl oleate synthesis was proposed. Besides, the experimental results also showed that bis[3-(CH2)3SO3H-1-(CH2)2-Im][HSO4]2 catalyst had a high catalytic activity to obtain methyl oleate and the catalyst could be separated easily owing to its larger molecular weight. However, [Im(N(CH2)3SO3H)2][HSO4] had a stronger acidity and a lower steric hindrance and thus a higher catalytic activity and was the optimal catalyst for the methyl oleate synthesis. In the presence of a small amount of catalyst (6 wt %) and at low reaction temperature (353 K), the methyl oleate yield could reach up to 93%. After six recycles of the catalyst, the methyl oleate yield remained at 90%.

Abstract
Surfactants have a great number of applications. Among these chemicals, petroleum sulfonates have been widely used due to their effectiveness in reducing interfacial tension. This is the case of sodium octylnaphthalene sulfonate which is a solid with a very low solubility in water. To overcome these drawbacks, this work aimed to synthesize new surface active ionic liquids based on a naphthalene sulfonate anion and traditional cations of these salts (imidazolium, pyrrolidinium, and pyridinium). The new chemicals showed high thermal stability, ionic liquid nature, and a stronger surfactant character than the original naphthalene. Moreover, they were found to be water soluble which greatly facilitates their application in the form of aqueous formulations. 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium 4-(n-octyl)naphthalene-1-sulfonate showed the best capacity to reduce water-air and water-oil interfacial tension.

Abstract
The surface interactions in [H-Pyr]+[HSO4]-/γ-Al2O3 system (prepared by wetness impregnation method) are investigated theoretically and experimentally. For that purpose, atoms in molecules theory, natural bond orbital and natural charge population analyses in a combination with a vibrational spectroscopy (FT-IR) are used. It is established that a bond formation between the hydrogen sulfate anion and the alumina influences the IL-support interaction in a great extent. However, a support-cation and a cation-anion interaction in the immobilized [H-Pyr]+[HSO4]- present as well. A comparative analysis between the experimental and the calculated vibrational modes is carried out and a significant number of infrared bands are assigned. The results indicate a good correlation between the experimental and the theoretical IR frequencies. It is found that the aforementioned interactions affected the vibrational frequencies in the supported IL.

Abstract
The molecular structure, vibrational frequencies of the fundamental modes and electronic transitions of the ionic liquid pyridinium nitrate ([H-Pyr]+[NO3]-) have been determined by means of density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-311++G (2d,2p) level. The chemical bonds nature and the intermolecular interactions in the title compound were investigated using the Quantum theory of atoms in molecules and Hirshfeld surface analysis. Natural bond orbital analysis has been performed in order to elucidate the hybridization and delocalization of electron density within the ion pair [H-Pyr]+[NO3]-. A detailed vibrational spectral analysis was carried out and the assignments of the observed bands have been proposed on the basis of potential energy distribution. A good correlation between experimental and theoretical IR frequencies was observed. To study the charge transfers occurred in the title molecule, UV-vis analysis was conducted.
