Application of magnetic ion-imprinted polymer as a new environmentally-friendly nonocomposite for a selective adsorption of the trace level of Cu(II) from aqueous solution and different samples

In Situ Fabrication and Characterization of g-C3N4 onto Cellulose Nanofibers and Selective Separation of Heavy Metal Ions

Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets were synthesized onto cellulose nanofiber surfaces utilizing an eco-friendly salt melt approach. The fabricated material CNF@C3N4 selectively removes Ni(II) and Cu(II) from electroplating wastewater samples. The immobilization of g-C3N4 on solid substrates eases handling of nanomaterial in a flow-through approach and mitigates sorbent loss during column operations. Characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, tunneling electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron microscopy were employed to analyze the surface morphology and chemical bonding within the synthesized material. Selective Cu(II) and Ni(II) sorption predominantly arises from the soft-soft interaction between metal ions and associated nitrogen groups. An inner-sphere surface complexation mechanism effectively elucidated the interaction dynamics between the metal and CNF@C3N4. Experimental findings demonstrated satisfactory separation of Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions, with the extraction of 340.0 and 385.0 mg g-1 of material, respectively. Additionally, the devised technique was executed for the preconcentration and quantification of trace metals ions in water samples with a detection limit and limit of quantification of 0.06 and 0.20 μg L-1, respectively.

APTMS-BCAD modified magnetic iron oxide for magnetic solid-phase extraction of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions

Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane-1,8-bis (3-chloropropoxy) anthracene-9,10-dione was synthesized as a new, sustainable, and environmentally friendly adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The structure of the adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM analysis. Optimum conditions for Cu(II) adsorption were determined as adsorbent dose 0.04 g, pH 5.0, contact time 120 min, and beginning concentration of 30 mg/L in the adsorption process. The adsorption capacity for Cu(II) ions was 43.67 mg/g and the removal efficiency was 84.72 percent. The Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order model fit the experimental data better. Adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process based on the obtained thermodynamic properties such as ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°. The results showed that the sorbent has good selectivity in the presence of competing ions. The method was determined to be accurate and effective using real water samples and CRM.

Preparation of Magnetic Surface Ion-Imprinted Polymer Based on Functionalized Fe3O4 for Fast and Selective Adsorption of Cobalt Ions from Water

A novel cobalt ion-imprinted polymer (Co(II)-MIIP) based on magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles was prepared by using Co(II) as the template ion, and bis(2-methacryloxyethyl) phosphate and glycylglycine as dual functional monomers. The fabricated material was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The adsorption experiments with Co(II)-MIIP, found that the maximum adsorption capacity could reach 33.4 mg·g−1, while that of the non-imprinted polymer (Co(II)-NIP) was found to reach 15.7 mg·g−1. The adsorption equilibriums of Co(II)-MIIP and Co(II)-NIP was established within 20 min and 30 min, respectively. The adsorption process could be suitably described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. In binary mixtures of Co(II)/Fe(II), Co(II)/Cu(II), Co(II)/Mg(II), Co(II)/Zn(II), and Co(II)/Ni(II), the relative selectivity coefficients of Co(II)-MIIP toward Co(II)-NIP were 5.25, 4.05, 6.06, 11.81, and 4.48, respectively. The regeneration experiments indicated that through six adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of Co(II)-MIIP remained nearly 90%.

Preparation of a novel amino functionalized ion-imprinted hybrid monolithic column for the selective extraction of trace copper followed by ICP-MS detection

In this work, a novel amino functionalized Cu(II) ion-imprinted organic-inorganic hybrid monolithic column (Cu(II)-IIHMC) was prepared via one-pot co-condensation and the combination of sol-gel and ion-imprinting techniques in a fused capillary. The Cu(II)-IIHMC was used as solid phase microextraction (SPME) matrix followed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the analysis of trace Cu(II). The prepared Cu(II)-IIHMC has good mechanical strength, stable imprinting sites and homogeneous structure of network skeleton with large flow-through pores by optimizing the synthesis process. Under the optimized conditions, the Cu(II)-IIHMC can selectively adsorb Cu(II) with the adsorption capacity of 3.13 mg g^-1. With enrichment factor of 10-fold, the calibration curve was established in the range of 0.05-50 μg L^-1 with r² of 0.9992 and the detection limit was 0.008 μg L^-1 for Cu(II). Compared with the non-imprinted hybrid monolithic column (Cu(II)-NIHMC), the Cu(II)-IIHMC possesses better selectivity, anti-interference ability and adsorption capacity. The Cu(II)-IIHMC can specifically capture the target ion in the presence of competitive ions, with the selectivity coefficients exceeding 39.4. The protocol was validated by analyzing Certified Reference Materials of standard sediment, soil and iron ore, and the results were in good agreement with certified values. Moreover, the proposed in-tube SPME procedure can not only preconcentrate trace Cu(II), but also effectively reduce the matrix effect and powerfully eliminate the interference from the main metals in real samples. Therefore, the developed SPME-ICP-MS method with facile preparation, specific selectivity, high sensitivity and efficient analysis, was applied in the determination of trace Cu(II) in environmental and mineral samples with the recoveries of 89.8-111.8% in all spiked samples.

Selective and rapid removal of Mo(VI) from water using functionalized Fe3O4-based Mo(VI) ion-imprinted polymer

Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles-based magnetic Mo(VI) surface ion-imprinted polymer (Mo(VI)-MIIP) was elaborated employing 4-vinyl pyridine as a functional monomer. The adsorbent preparation was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, thermogravimetric analysis, and surface area analysis. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Mo(VI)-MIIP was 296.40 mg g^-1 at pH 3, while that of the magnetic non-imprinted polymer (MNIP) was only 147.10 mg g^-1. The adsorption isotherm model was well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption experiments revealed that Mo(VI)-MIIP reached adsorption equilibrium within 30 min, and the kinetics data fitting showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetics model suitably described the adsorption process. Mo(VI)-MIIP exhibited an excellent adsorption selectivity to Mo(VI) in binary mixtures of Mo(VI)/Cr(VI), Mo(VI)/Cu(II), Mo(VI)/H₂PO4₄^-, Mo(VI)/Zn(II), and Mo(VI)/I^-, with relative selectivity coefficients toward MNIP of 13.71, 30.27, 20.01, 23.53, and 15.89, respectively. After six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of Mo(VI)-MIIP decreased by 9.5% (from 228.4 mg g^-1 to 206.7 mg g^-1 at initial Mo(VI) concentration of 250 mg L^-1), demonstrating its reusability.

A Critical Review on the Synthesis and Application of Ion-Imprinted Polymers for Selective Preconcentration, Speciation, Removal and Determination of Trace and Essential Metals from Different Matrices

The presence of toxic trace metals and high concentrations of essential elements in the environment presents a serious threat to living organism. Various methods have been used for the detection, preconcentration and remediation of these metals from biological, environmental and food matrices. Owing to the complexicity of samples, methods with high selectivity have been used for detection, preconcentration and remediation of these trace metals. These methods are achieved by the use of ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) due to their impressive properties such as selectivity, high extraction efficiency, speciation capability and reusability. Because of the increase of toxic trace and essential metals in the environment, IIPs have attracted great use in analytical chemistry. This review, provide a brief background on IIPs and polymerization method that are used for their preparation. Recent applications of IIPs as adsorbents for preconcentration, removal, speciation and electrochemical detection of trace and essential metal is also discussed.

Preparation of a new magnetic ion-imprinted polymer and optimization using Box-Behnken design for selective removal and determination of Cu(II) in food and wastewater samples

A new magnetic Cu(II) IIP (Fe₃O₄@IIP-IDC) is synthesized by polymerization of Imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid functionalized Allyl chloride, and significant improvement of its performance has been compared. SPE parameters were optimized using Box-Behnken design to achieve the twin objectives of quantitative determination and removal of Cu(II). FLPSO kinetic model and BS isotherm model fits well with the capacity of 175 mg g^-1. Analytical figures of merit includes a linearity range of 10-5,000 µg L^-1 (R² = 0.9986), preconcentration factor of 50 after eluting with 5 mL of 1 M HNO₃, LOD of 1.03 µg L^-1 and LOQ of 4.5 µg L^-1. Accuracy was assessed by analysis of SRM (Standard Reference Material) and recovery experiments after spiking in food samples (Tea, coffee, chocolate, spinach, infant milk substitute) and battery wastewater. Ease of use, reusability (15 cycles), rapid adsorption and high selectivity makes it a promising candidate for efficient and selective removal and trace determination.
