Abstract
In this paper, a series of tetrameric surfactants (4CnSAZs, n = 12, 14, 16) endowed with zwitterionic characteristic were synthesized by a simple and convenient method and their structures were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and elemental analysis. Their physicochemical properties were studied using the Wilhelmy plate method, fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering technique. 4CnSAZs have higher surface activities and tend to adsorb at the air/water surface rather than self-assembling in aqueous solution. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from surface tension measurements show that both processes of adsorption and micellization of 4CnSAZs are spontaneous and that the micellization processes of 4CnSAZs are entropy-driven processes. Both adsorption and micellization of 4CnSAZs are inclined to occur with the increase of alkyl chain length or temperature. For 4C12SAZs, there are only small-size aggregates (micelles), while the large aggregates (vesicles) are observed at the alkyl length of 4CnSAZs of 14 or 16. This shows that the alkyl chain length for oligomeric surfactants has a greater sensitivity for aggregate growth. The aggregate morphologies obtained from the calculated values of critical packing parameter (p) for 4C14SAZs and 4C16SAZs can be supported by the DLS measurement results. The test results obtained by the separation-water-time method show that 4CnSAZs have good emulsification performance and that the prepared emulsions appear to exit in the form of multiple emulsions. In addition, 4CnSAZs have good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The present study reveals the unique behavior of a zwitterionic tetrameric surfactant and may give new insights into molecular design and synthesis of a high degree of surfactants with different structure characteristics for potential application in various industrial fields.

Evaluation of the Oil Recovery Potential and Cost Implication Analysis of Alternative ASP Formulations for Sandstone and Carbonate Reservoirs. ACS OMEGA 2024; 9:20859-20875. Abstract
This study explores alternative chemical agents to enhance oil recovery in sandstone and carbonate reservoirs, aiming to address limitations in alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding. Existing ASP methods face technical and environmental challenges, prompting research into alternative chemical agents. However, there are limited field deployments of these alternative chemical agents due to high costs, and ternary combinations of these agents remain unexplored. The study investigates a combination of organic alkali, amino acid-based surfactant/surface-active ionic liquid, and biopolymer. Comparative analysis with conventional ASP formulations reveals promising results. Organic alkali and biopolymer combination mitigates the adverse effects of inorganic alkalis on partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, enhancing the oil recovery potential. A unit technical cost (UTC) calculation showed that despite higher chemical costs per incremental barrel of oil, the alternative ASP formulations demonstrate comparable costs due to reduced facility cost. Cost-effectiveness will improve with incorporation of factors such as environmental friendliness and reduced preflush requirements. Mass production of these agents could further enhance the economic feasibility. Therefore, this study reveals that careful cost-benefit analysis, the development of low-concentration formulations, and mass production of these chemical agents could facilitate the implementation of these alternatives, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and enabling ASP flooding in challenging reservoir conditions.

Abstract
Environmental awareness is receiving increasing attention in the petroleum industry, especially when associated with chemical agents applied in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology. The bio-based surfactant sodium cocoyl alaninate (SCA) is environmentally friendly and can be easily biodegraded, which makes it a promising alternative to traditional surfactants. Herein, the SCA surfactant is proposed as a foaming agent for enhanced oil recovery. Laboratory investigations on the surfactant concentration, foaming performance, microbubble characterization, interfacial tension, and foam-flooding of the traditional surfactants SDS and OP-10 have been conducted. In particular, the anti-salt abilities of these three surfactants have been studied, taking into consideration the reservoir conditions at Bohai Bay Basin, China. The results show that concentrations of 0.20 wt%, 0.20 wt% and 0.50 wt% for SCA, SDS and OP-10, respectively, can achieve optimum foaming ability and foaming stability under formation salinity conditions, and 0.20 wt% SCA achieved the best foaming ability and stability compared to 0.20 wt% SDS and 0.50 wt% OP-10. Sodium fatty acid groups and amino acid groups present in the SCA molecular structure have high surface activities under different salinity conditions, making SCA an excellent anti-salt surfactant for enhanced oil recovery. The microstructure analysis results showed that most of the SCA bubbles were smaller in size, with an average diameter of about 150 μm, and the distribution of SCA bubbles was more uniform, which can reduce the risk of foam coalescence and breakdown. The IFT value of the SCA/oil system was measured to be 0.157 mN m-1 at 101.5 °C, which was the lowest. A lower IFT can make liquid molecules more evenly distributed on the surface, and enhance the elasticity of the foam film. Core-flooding experimental results showed that a 0.30 PV SCA foam and secondary waterflooding can enhance oil recovery by more than 15% after primary waterflooding, which can reduce the mobility ratio from 3.7711 to 1.0211. The more viscous SCA foam caused a greater flow resistance, and effectively reduced the successive water fingering, leading to a more stable driving process to fully displace the remaining oil within the porous media. The bio-based surfactant SCA proposed in this paper has the potential for application in enhanced oil recovery in similar high-salt oil reservoirs.

Abstract
The formation of aggregates, which are widely used in the field of biochemistry and the medical industry, was studied with different compositions of alkyl betaine gemini surfactant (C14Ab) in conjugation with chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ). The results were compared with those of a single-chain zwitterionic surfactant (C12DmCB) of the same type with CPZ. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods were used to distinguish the aggregates for the CPZ/C14Ab system in aqueous solutions above a certain mole fraction of the drug CPZ (αCPZ = 0.2). Time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements of acridine orange revealed relative polarity near the head group regions of mixed micelle (CPZ/C14Ab and CPZ/C12DmCB) systems. The hydrophilic environment around the head group regions of the CPZ/C14Ab system was different from that in the case of the CPZ/C12DmCB system. On the other hand, several theoretical models were employed (Clint, Rubingh, Motomura, and SPB) for mixed micellar systems to elucidate the different interaction parameters. Such a systematic study of a zwitterionic gemini amphiphile and its interaction with other amphiphiles and an amphiphilic drug molecule is rare in the literature.

Abstract
Through our present study, three novel Gemini-fluorinated cationic surfactants bearing different spacers (FSG6-2, FSG6-4, and FSG6-6) were synthesized, and their structures were explained via different spectroscopic instruments such as 1H, 13C, and 19F NMR spectra. The surface activity of the as-prepared surfactants was examined. The inhibiting influence of FSG6 molecules on the X60 steel corrosion in the pickling solution (HCl) was examined by diverse methods comprising electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experimentations, and computational calculations. The inhibition effectiveness of FSG6 surfactants followed the order of 93.37% (FSG6-2) < 96.74% (FSG6-4) < 98.37% (FSG6-6) at 2.0 × 10-4 M. The FSG6 surfactants function as mixed-type inhibitors, according to PDP investigations. The H2O molecules that adsorbed on the steel interface were substituted with surfactant molecules, and the surfactant's inhibitory activity is likely caused by the improvement in an adsorptive layer on the steel substrate, as specified by the EIS results. The Langmuir isotherm describes the absorption of FSG6 molecules on the metal surface. The XPS investigations validate the steel interface's extremely protective nature. The mechanism of interaction between FSG6 molecules with an X60-steel employing the DFT calculations and MC simulations methods was also examined and discussed.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to synthesize lignin carboxyl betaine zwitterionic surfactants (LCBS) from alkali lignin through a three-step reaction involving epoxidation, amination, and quaternization. The synthesized LCBS were characterized using infrared spectroscopy (IR) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. To assess their potential for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), the physicochemical properties of the LCBS surfactants, such as surface tension, emulsification, temperature resistance, salt resistance, and interfacial properties, were evaluated using standard experimental methods for surfactants applied in oil displacement. The LCBS surfactants exhibited higher surface activity, with low surface tension values ranging from 29.65 mN m-1 to 31.85 mN m-1 at the corresponding critical micelle concentration (cmc), also the significant emulsifying performance of LCBS surfactants was proved in the emulsifying experiments. Moreover, the synthesized LCBS surfactants were found to be suitable for use in harsh reservoirs of high-salinity and high-temperature, as confirmed by the temperature and salt resistance measurements. The interfacial tension (IFT) tests between Huabei crude oil and LCBS surfactants suggested that these surfactants could effectively extract the crude oil containing heavy components such as colloid and asphaltene, and ultra-low IFT values could be achieved with the addition of weak alkali.

Silicate Scaling Formation: Impact of pH in High-Temperature Reservoir and Its Characterization Study. BULLETIN OF CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING & CATALYSIS 2022. Abstract
Silicate scaling tends to form and be aggravated during high pH Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) floods and this silicate scale deposition affects oil production. Hence, it is important to examine the conditions that lead to silicate scale forming. The severity of the silicate scaling reaction, the type and morphology of silica/silicate scale formed in an experimental ASP flood were studied for pH values 5, 8.5, and 11, whilst the temperature was kept constant at 90 ℃. In addition, the impact of calcium ion was studied and spectroscopic analyses were used to identify the extent of scaling reaction, morphology type and the functional group present in the precipitates. This was performed using imagery of the generated precipitates. It was observed that the silica/silicate scale is most severe at the highest pH and Ca:Mg molar ratios examined. Magnesium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide were observed to precipitate along with the silica and Mg-silicate/Ca-silicate scale at pH 11. The presence of calcium ions altered the morphology of the precipitates formed from amorphous to microcrystalline/crystalline. In conclusion, pH affects the type, morphology, and severity of the silica/silicate scale produced in the studied scaling system. The comprehensive and conclusive data showing how pH affects the silicate scaling reaction reported here are vital in providing the foundation to further investigate the management and prevention of this silicate scaling. Abstract
This study aimed to develop novel bio-nanofluids using Solanum torvum extracts in synergy with nanoparticles of different chemical nature as a proposal sustainable for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications. For this, saponin-rich extracts (SRE) were obtained from Solanum torvum fruit using ultrasound-assisted and Soxhlet extraction. The results revealed that Soxhlet is more efficient for obtaining SRE from Solanum torvum and that degreasing does not generate additional yields. SRE was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectrophotometry, thermogravimetric analysis, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, and critical micelle concentration analyses. Bio-nanofluids based on SiO2 (strong acid), ZrO2 (acid), Al2O3 (neutral), and MgO (basic) nanoparticles and SRE were designed to evaluate the effect of the chemical nature of the nanoparticles on the SRE performance. The results show that 100 mg L-1 MgO nanoparticles improved the interfacial tension up to 57% and the capillary number increased by two orders of magnitude using this bio-nanofluid. SRE solutions enhanced with MgO recovered about 21% more than the system in the absence of nanoparticles. The addition of MgO nanoparticles did not cause a loss of injectivity. This is the first study on the surface-active properties of Solanum torvum enhanced with nanomaterials as an environmentally friendly EOR process.

Abstract
Oil production faces challenges such as limited oil production from carbonate reservoirs, high oil production costs, and environmental issues. Chemical flooding as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method (CEOR) can increase oil production by the use of chemical additives such as surfactants into the reservoirs. Surfactants can increase oil recovery by interfacial tension (IFT) reduction and alteration of the rock wettability from oil-wet to water-wet. The synthesis of chemicals such as synthetic surfactants is usually costly and harmful to the environment. To solve these problems, many researchers have oriented on the use of natural surfactants instead of synthetic ones within the CEOR process. A new approach to increase the efficiency of CEOR is the synergizing of the chemical additives with nanoparticles as a hybrid fluid, which is known as the nanotechnology-assisted EOR method. In this research, a natural surfactant derived from Cyclamen persicum (CP) plant was extracted, and its performance was optimized with the zinc oxide/montmorillonite (ZnO/MMT) nanocomposite in a synergistic usage. At the optimum concentration of the surfactant, the measurements of the IFT and the contact angle show 57.78 and 61.58% optimizations, respectively. Also, in the presence of NaCl, the performance of CP is improved. IFT and contact angle measurements were also conducted for ZnO/MMT nanofluids and CP-ZnO/MMT as hybrid nanofluids. Results indicate that ZnO/MMT nanocomposites can alter the wettability of the carbonate rock to the water-wet state. Also, the CP-ZnO/MMT hybrid nanofluid shows a good potential in both IFT reduction and altering wettability from oil-wet to water-wet. Finally, to investigate the effects of solutions on increasing oil recovery factor (RF), the optimum concentrations of the surfactant, nanocomposite, and hybrid solutions were selected for dynamic core flooding experiments, and improvements showed oil RF increases of 8.2, 6, and 13%, respectively.

Abstract
With the increasing demand for efficient extraction of residual oil, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) offers prospects for producing more reservoirs' original oil in place. As one of the most promising methods, chemical EOR (cEOR) is the process of injecting chemicals (polymers, alkalis, and surfactants) into reservoirs. However, the main issue that influences the recovery efficiency in surfactant flooding of cEOR is surfactant losses through adsorption to the reservoir rocks. This review focuses on the key issue of surfactant adsorption in cEOR and addresses major concerns regarding surfactant adsorption processes. We first describe the adsorption behavior of surfactants with particular emphasis on adsorption mechanisms, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorption structures. Factors that affect surfactant adsorption such as surfactant characteristics, solution chemistry, rock mineralogy, and temperature were discussed systematically. To minimize surfactant adsorption, the chemical additives of alkalis, polymers, nanoparticles, co-solvents, and ionic liquids are highlighted as well as implementing with salinity gradient and low salinity water flooding strategies. Finally, current trends and future challenges related to the harsh conditions in surfactant based EOR are outlined. It is expected to provide solid knowledge to understand surfactant adsorption involved in cEOR and contribute to improved flooding strategies with reduced surfactant loss.

Abstract
The wettability of carbonate rocks is often oil-wet or mixed wet. A large fraction of oil is still remained in carbonate reservoirs, it is therefore of particular significance to implement effective methods to improve oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs. Altering wettability from oil-wet to more favorable water-wet has been proven successful to achieve this goal. Surfactants are widely investigated and served as wettability modifiers in this process. Yet a comprehensive review of altering wettability of carbonate reservoirs with surfactants is ignored in literature. This study begins with illustration of wettability evolution process in carbonate reservoirs. Techniques to evaluate wettability alteration extent or to reveal behind mechanisms are also presented. Several surfactant systems are analyzed in terms of their wettability alteration mechanisms, influential factors of performance, applicable conditions, and limitations. Mixture of different types of surfactants could obtain synergic effects, where applicable conditions are extended, and final performance is improved. Gemini surfactants have many desirable properties, which warrants further investigation for understanding their wettability alteration mechanisms and performance. At the end, this review discusses strategies related with surfactant cost, surfactant adsorption, and challenges at high temperature, high salinity reservoirs conditions. Also, some unclear issues are discussed.

Abstract
In this work, we prepared nonionic surfactants from waste cooking oil materials. Hydrolysis was carried out for palm and palm kernel waste cooking oils to get a mixture of free fatty acids. The mixture of free acids was esterified with sorbitan and then ethoxylated at different ethylene oxide units. Two surfactants exhibited promising surface-active properties among the six prepared surfactants based on the results of surface tension. The interfacial tension (IFT) around the critical micelle concentration was measured against a series of n-hydrocarbon to detect the minimum alkane carbon number (ACN) (Πmin) for each of these surfactants. The effect of normal and branched alcohols on Πmin was also studied to design the surfactant/alcohol mixture for the chemical flooding process. From the results of IFT, the ethoxylated ester derivatives of palm kernel fatty acids (EPK-20) exhibited minimum IFT γmin (0.06 mN m-1) at Πmin equal to 12, and the ethoxylated ester derivatives of palm fatty acids (EP-40) achieved γmin equal to 0.09 mN m-1 at Πmin of 10. Branched alcohols shifted Πmin to a higher value to reach the equivalent ACN of the crude oil and decrease the IFT to lower values. The flooding process showed that the maximum oil recovery was obtained by EPK-20 (54.2% when used purely and 66.2% when used with isoamyl alcohol). In comparison, EP-40 exhibited that oil recovery equals 46% without alcohol and 46.4% with iso-butanol alcohol. The results were interpreted and discussed based on interfacial properties, wettability alteration, and the ACN.

Abstract
Abstract
The surfactant flooding becomes an attractive method among several Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes to improve the recovery of residual oil left behind in the reservoir after secondary oil recovery process. The designing of a new effective surfactant is a comparatively complex and often time consuming process as well as cost-effective due to its dependency on the crude oil and reservoir properties. An alternative chemical computational approach is focused in this article to optimize the performance of effective surfactant system for EOR. The molecular dynamics (MD), dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations are mostly used chemical computational approaches to study the behaviour in multiple phase systems like surfactant/oil/brine. This article highlighted a review on the impact of surfactant head group structure on oil/water interfacial property like interfacial tensions, interface formation energy, interfacial thickness by MD simulation. The effect of entropy in micelle formation has also discussed through MD simulation. The polarity, dipole moment, charge distribution and molecular structure optimization have been illustrated by DFT. A relatively new coarse-grained method, DPD is also emphasized the phase behaviour of surfactant/oil/brine as well as polymer-surfactant complex system.
