The effect of dispersion interactions on the structure and performance of electrical double layer of ionic liquids

Incorporating ion-specific van der Waals and soft repulsive interactions in the Poisson-Boltzmann theory of electrical double layers

Electrical double layers (EDLs) arise when an electrolyte is in contact with a charged surface, and are encountered in several application areas including batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalytic reactors, and colloids. Over the last century, the development of Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) models and their modified versions have provided significant physical insight into the structure and dynamics of the EDL. Incorporation of physics such as finite-ion-size effects, dielectric decrement, and ion-ion correlations has made such models increasingly accurate when compared to more computationally expensive approaches such as molecular simulations and classical density functional theory. However, a prominent knowledge gap has been the exclusion of van der Waals (vdW) and soft repulsive interactions in modified PB models. Although short-ranged as compared to electrostatic interactions, we show here that vdW and soft repulsive interactions can play an important role in determining the structure of the EDL via the formation of a Stern layer and in modulating the differential capacitance of an electrode in an electrolyte. To this end, we incorporate ion-ion and wall-ion vdW attraction and soft repulsion via a 12-6 Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential, resulting in a modified PB-LJ approach. The wall-ion LJ interactions were found to have a significant effect on the electrical potential and concentration profiles, especially close to the wall. However, ion-ion LJ interactions do not affect the EDL structure at low bulk ion concentrations (<1 M). We also derive dimensionless numbers to quantify the impact of ion-ion and wall-ion LJ interactions on the EDL. Furthermore, in the pursuit of capturing ion-specific effects, we apply our model by considering various ions such as Na, K+, Mg2+, Cl-, and SO42-. We observe how varying parameters such as the electrolyte concentration and electrode potential affect the structure of the EDL due to the competition between ion-specific LJ and electrostatic interactions. Lastly, we show that the inclusion of vdW and soft repulsion interactions, as well as hydration effects, leads to a better qualitative agreement of the PB models with experimental double-layer differential capacitance data. Overall, the modified PB-LJ approach presented herein will lead to more accurate theoretical descriptions of EDLs in various application areas.

On Capacitance and Energy Storage of Supercapacitor with Dielectric Constant Discontinuity

The classical density functional theory (CDFT) is applied to investigate influences of electrode dielectric constant on specific differential capacitance Cd and specific energy storage E of a cylindrical electrode pore electrical double layer. Throughout all calculations the electrode dielectric constant varies from 5, corresponding to a dielectric electrode, to εwr= 10⁸ corresponding to a metal electrode. Main findings are summarized as below. (i): By using a far smaller value of the solution relative dielectric constant εr=10, which matches with the reality of extremely narrow tube, one discloses that a rather high saturation voltage is needed to attain the saturation energy storage in the ultra-small pore. (ii): Use of a realistic low εr=10 value brings two obvious effects. First, influence of bulk electrolyte concentration on the Cd is rather small except when the electrode potential is around the zero charge potential; influence on the E curve is almost unobservable. Second, there remain the Cd and E enhancing effects caused by counter-ion valency rise, but strength of the effects reduces greatly with dropping of the εr value; in contrast, the Cd and E reducing effects coming from the counter-ion size enhancing remain significant enough for the low εr value. (iii) A large value of electrode relative dielectric constant εrw always reduces both the capacitance and energy storage; moreover, the effect of the εrw value gets eventually unobservable for small enough pore when the εrw value is beyond the scope corresponding to dielectric electrode. It is analyzed that the above effects take their rise in the repulsion and attraction on the counter-ions and co-ions caused by the electrode bound charges and a strengthened inter-counter-ion electrostatic repulsion originated in the low εr value.

Effect of surface roughness on partition of ionic liquids in nanopores by a perturbed-chain SAFT density functional theory

In this work, the distribution and partition behavior of ionic liquids (ILs) in nanopores with rough surfaces are investigated by a two-dimensional (2D) classical density functional theory (DFT) model. The model is consistent with the equation of state (EoS) that combines the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) and the mean spherical approximation (MSA) theory for bulk fluid. Its performance is verified by comparing the theoretical predictions to the results from molecular simulations. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) and a hybrid iteration method of Picard iteration and Anderson mixing are used to efficiently obtain the solution of density profile for the sizeable 2D system. The molecular parameters for IL-ions are obtained by fitting to experimental densities of bulk ILs. The model is applied to study the structure and partition of the ILs in nanopores. The results show that the peak of the density profile of counterions near a rough surface is much higher than that near a smooth surface. The adsorption of counterion and removal of coions are enhanced by surface roughness. Thus the nanopore with rough surfaces can store more charge. At low absolute surface potential, the partition coefficient for ions on rough surfaces is lower than that on smooth surfaces. At high absolute surface potential, increasing surface roughness leads to an increase in partition coefficient for counterions and a decrease in partition coefficient for coions.

Double-Edged Sword of Ion-Size Asymmetry in Energy Storage of Supercapacitors

The advanced supercapacitor is of great significance for renewable energy storage. Achieving its high energy and high power densities remains a huge challenge. Herein, the contribution of ion-size asymmetry to the charging behavior of a supercapacitor is systematically studied using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). We track the time evolution of the ionic microstructure inside the porous electrode and its reservoir and reveal a kinetic charge inversion in the asymmetrical ion-size cases. Compared with the symmetrical ion-size case, we find that the ion-size asymmetry has a double-edged sword effect on the energy storage of a supercapacitor: it accelerates the charging process yet reduces the differential capacitance. Additionally, the energy density and power density can simultaneously increase in the asymmetrical cases, which provides important insights toward the experimental design of supercapacitors with high energy and high power densities.

Effect of Electric Potential and Chain Length on Tribological Performances of Ionic Liquids as Additives for Aqueous Systems and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

As pure lubricants, ILs performed very well by forming the classical self-assembly bilayer at the sliding interface. The interface mechanism is still not clear in a very polar, e.g., water-based lubricating system. In this work, the interfacial absorption and tribological behavior of carboxylic alkanolamine ionic liquids (CAILs) serving as aqueous lubricating additives were studied by applying positive and negative potentials on the friction pair, accompanied by the comprehensive discussion of data from critical micelle concentration, quartz crystal microbalance, ECR, and MD results. The results reveal that the adsorption behavior, unexpectedly, was affected by the high polarity of H₂O, where a less dense double-layer structure is observed at the interface by model imitation. Conversely, the monomolecular adsorption layer constructed electrostatically between the polar head (-COO^-) and the positive base dominates the tribofilm. Meanwhile, the cations are partially accumulating around anions in the presence of static electricity, which does not form a neat and dense one-to-one corresponding cation-anion pair. In the solution, the IL maintains a state of dissociation and minor agglomeration. Furthermore, an increase in alkyl chains contributes to the thickness of the protective film generated by CAILs on the sliding asperity. Eventually, the synergistic effect from physical adsorption and the tribochemical reaction is responsible for excellent lubricity and antiwear performance of CAILs.
