Recent advances in CO2 capture and mineralization using layered double hydroxide-based materials: A review

The continuous release of substantial amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere has resulted in numerous severe adverse effects. Several materials have been synthesized and utilized for CO2 capture. One class of such materials is layered double hydroxides (LDHs), which have emerged as promising materials for CO2 capture due to their tunable properties, high surface area, and excellent CO2 adsorption capabilities. Although there are some review articles on CO2 capture and conversion using various materials, there is still a notable lack of thorough reviews focusing on the utilization of LDH-based materials for CO2 capture. Additionally, the field of CO2 capture and mineralization using LDH-based materials is rapidly evolving, necessitating up-to-date comprehensive reviews to analyze, evaluate, and condense the dispersed information found in recently published research articles. Accordingly, this review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in CO2 capture using LDH-based materials. After briefly introducing the topic, different synthesis protocols of LDH-based materials are briefly reviewed. Then, CO2 capture using LDHs, calcined LDHs, impregnated LDHs, composites containing LDHs, amine functionalized LDHs, and during steam methane reforming, are thoroughly analyzed and discussed. Additionally, the effects of synthesis method and post treatment of LDH-based materials on CO2 capture, effect of modification and functionalization on LDHs, and the effects of various process conditions including temperature, pressure, water vapor, and gas composition on the performance of CO2 capture by LDH-based materials are reviewed. Limitations, challenges, obstacles, and remaining knowledge gaps are highlighted, and future research works to address them are proposed.

Intercalation of a Cationic Cyanine Dye Assisted by Anionic Surfactants within Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxide

An original route for the intercalation of a 1,1'-diethyl-2,2'-cyanine iodide (PIC) cationic dye, through the use of anionic surfactants as vector/carrier phases, within Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) was investigated. From the data acquired from complementary techniques (X-ray diffraction, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies, thermogravimetry, and fluorimetry), it appears that both the intercalation and aggregation states of the cationic dye within the internal structure of LDH mainly depend on both the surfactant state (monomer form or spherical micelle) and its amount. The intercalation of PIC at a low molar ratio to the anionic surfactant leads to the formation of J-aggregates with singular fluorescence properties that mainly depend on the nature of the anionic surfactant used for the co-intercalation process. The results obtained in this study open new routes for the intercalation of cationic species, assisted by anionic surfactants, within LDHs.

Improved Water-Gas Shift Performance of Au/NiAl LDHs Nanostructured Catalysts via CeO2 Addition

Supported gold on co-precipitated nanosized NiAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was studied as an effective catalyst for medium-temperature water–gas shift (WGS) reaction, an industrial catalytic process traditionally applied for the reduction in the amount of CO in the synthesis gas and production of pure hydrogen. The motivation of the present study was to improve the performance of the Au/NiAl catalyst via modification by CeO₂. An innovative approach for the direct deposition of ceria (1, 3 or 5 wt.%) on NiAl-LDH, based on the precipitation of Ce³⁺ ions with 1M NaOH, was developed. The proposed method allows us to obtain the CeO₂ phase and to preserve the NiAl layered structure by avoiding the calcination treatment. The synthesis of Au-containing samples was performed through the deposition–precipitation method. The as-prepared and WGS-tested samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, N₂-physisorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in order to clarify the effects of Au and CeO₂ loading on the structure, phase composition, textural and electronic properties and activity of the catalysts. The reduction behavior of the studied samples was evaluated by temperature-programmed reduction. The WGS performance of Au/NiAl catalysts was significantly affected by the addition of CeO₂. A favorable role of ceria was revealed by comparison of CO conversion degree at 220 °C reached by 3 wt.% CeO₂-modified and ceria-free Au/NiAl samples (98.8 and 83.4%, respectively). It can be stated that tuning the properties of Au/NiAl LDH via CeO₂ addition offers catalysts with possibilities for practical application owing to innovative synthesis and improved WGS performance.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of NiFe- layered double hydroxides as efficient electrode materials in supercapacitors

Under ultrasound irradiation, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanostructures with three molar ratios and three dissimilar reaction times were prepared. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to characterize the synthesized nanomaterials. Using a sonochemichal route, various morphologies of the NiFe-LDH nanostructures without any impurity and variations in the structure were produced. During the optimization process, it was found that sonication time and reagent concentration in a fixed irradiation frequency can affect the size and the morphology of the produced nanostructures. Under ultrasound irradiation, non-aggregated particles with uniform, spherical morphology were obtained with molar ratios of 4:1 (Ni:Fe) with 45 W at 180 min. The NiFe-LDH samples were observed to be supercapacitor under a 6 M KOH solution. When morphologically-controlled NiFe-LDH samples were used, the pseudo-capacitive behavior of the nanostructures was tuned. After 3 h of ultrasonic irradiation, the optimized sample (NiFe-LDH spherical nanostructures with 4:1 M ratio) had a high value of specific capacitance (168F g^-1).

The NiGa-LDH@NiWO4 nanocomposite as an electrode material for pseudocapacitors

NiGa-LDH@X-NiWO₄ (X: 3, 5 or 10 wt% NiWO₄) nanocomposites were prepared at room temperature under mild conditions.
