Abstract
Hydrogen bonds play an important role in the interaction between surfactants. In this study, the effect of three different ethoxylated alcohols (OP-10, NP-10, AEO-9) on the collecting behavior of sodium oleate (NaOL) in the flotation of quartz was investigated. To explore the mechanism, the hydrogen bond between ethoxylated alcohols and NaOL was analyzed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results showed that ethoxylated alcohols promoted the collecting performance of NaOL and reduced the dosage of the activator CaO and the collector NaOL in the flotation of quartz. The Zeta potential measurement illustrated that ethoxylated alcohols promoted the adsorption of OL- on the activated quartz surface and the degree of promotion was in the order of OP-10 > NP-10 > AEO-9. The MD simulation results showed that a hydrogen bond presented between ethoxylated alcohols and OL-. Due to the hydrogen bond between the ethoxylated alcohols and OL-, the attraction force between OL- and the quartz surface increased with the addition of ethoxylated alcohols in the order of OP-10 > NP-10 > AEO-9 based on the MD simulation results. As the result, the addition of ethoxylated alcohols increased the adsorption density of OL- on the activated quartz surface, which explained the promotion of the collecting performance of OL- in the flotation of quartz.

Abstract
Quartz, a common inorganic nonmetallic mineral, is usually removed or purified by beneficiation, normally flotation. Given the strong polarity of the quartz surface, it is easy to hydrate to form a hydroxylation layer, which makes it impossible to float quartz with sodium oleate (OL) used alone. An ideal flotation method for quartz is preactivation with Ca2+, followed by collection with OL. Herein, the effects of surface hydroxylation on the adsorption of the anionic collector OL on the quartz surface before and after Ca2+ activation are systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the displacement adsorption of surface hydroxyl substituted by OL- is not feasible in thermodynamics, and the OL- can only bind to the H atoms of the hydroxylated quartz surface via hydrogen bonds, namely, hydrogen binding adsorption. Due to the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance effect induced by the surface hydroxylation structure, the adsorption ability of OL- on the quartz surface mediated by hydroxyl bridges is very weak, which is insufficient to realize quartz floating. However, Ca2+ ions are easily adsorbed on the hydroxylated quartz surface, providing favorable active sites for subsequent adsorption of OL-, thus becoming a credible solution for the industrial flotation of the strong hydrophilic mineral quartz. These findings shed some new insights for accurately understanding the flotation mechanism of strongly hydrophilic oxide minerals and are beneficial to promoting the development of mineral flotation fundamentals.

Abstract
Molecular dynamic simulations of polyacrylic acid polyelectrolyte (PAA) analyzed its interaction with the main minerals that make up characteristic tailings of the mining industry, in this case, quartz, kaolinite, and montmorillonite. The simulations were carried out with the package Gromacs 2020.3. The interaction potentials used were General AMBER Force Field (GAFF) for PAA and CLAYFF-MOH for mineral surfaces. The SPC/E model described water molecules and Lennard-Jones 12-6 parameters adjusted for SPC/E model were used for Na+ and Cl− ions. The studied systems were carried out at pH 7, obtaining stable adsorption between the PAA and the studied surfaces. Interestingly, the strongest adsorptions were for montmorillonite at both low and high salt concentrations. The effect of salinity differs according to the system, finding that it impairs the absorption of the polymer on montmorillonite surfaces. However, a saline medium favors the interaction with quartz and kaolinite. This is explained because montmorillonite has a lower surface charge density and a greater capacity to adsorb ions. This facilitated the adsorption of PAA. It was possible to identify that the main interaction by which the polymer is adsorbed is through the hydroxyl of the mineral surface and the COO−Na+ complexes. Molecular dynamics allows us to advance in the understanding of interactions that define the behavior of this promising reagent as an alternative for sustainable treatment of complex tailings in highly saline environments.

Abstract
Abstract
To study the sodium oleate (NaOL) adsorption on quartz and its effect on flotation under weak-acidic conditions, the adsorption characteristics of NaOL on the surface of quartz were determined at pH = 6.5 by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The solution chemical calculation results show that NaOL exists as oleic acid (HOL) under weakly acidic conditions. The existence form and charge distribution of quartz and HOL were analyzed by Molecular Dynamics Simulation (MDS) using Materials Studio (MS) software, and the results showed that HOL is prone to the (101) and (100) surfaces of quartz under weak-acidic conditions by hydrogen bonding. The flotation verification test with NaOL as a collector was also performed under weak-acidic conditions. The flotation test led to a partial flotation of quartz into the froth products, reducing the grade of hematite direct flotation concentrate, which is consistent with industrial production.

Abstract
A scientific and rigorous study on the adsorption behavior and molecular mechanism of collector sodium oleate (NaOL) on a Ca2+-activated hydroxylated α-quartz surface was performed through experiments and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The rarely reported hydroxylation behaviors of water molecules on the α-quartz (101) surface were first innovatively and systematically studied by DFT calculations. Both experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that the adsorbed calcium species onto the hydroxylated structure can significantly enhance the adsorption of oleate ions, resulting in a higher quartz recovery. The calculated adsorption energies confirmed that the adsorbed hydrated Ca2+ in the form of Ca(H2O)3(OH)+ can greatly promote the adsorption of OL− on hydroxylated quartz (101). In addition, Mulliken population analysis together with electron density difference analysis intuitively illustrated the process of electron transfer and the Ca-bridge phenomenon between the hydroxylated surface and OL− ions. This work may offer new insights into the interaction mechanisms existing among oxidized minerals, aqueous medium, and flotation reagents.

Abstract
Pregelatinized starch (PS) was used for the selective flocculation and flotation of fine siderite in a carbonate-containing iron ore. With PS, the flotation of fine siderite was improved. The repulsive forces between fine siderite particles and the attractive forces between siderite and hematite or quartz were decreased after treatment with PS, indicating that the aggregation of siderite was enhanced and the aggregations of mixed minerals were weakened. An analysis of the changes in X-ray photoelectron spectra showed that coordination bonds were formed when PS was adsorbed on siderite and hematite. However, PS could not adsorb on quartz. Moreover, the molecular simulation showed that the main mechanism for PS adsorption on siderite was confirmed as a "tail model" with end -OH coordinated with Fe2+. The bridge connection of PS enhanced the flocculation of fine siderite. The flotation of fine siderite was also enhanced. For hematite treated with PS, the combination of coordination bond and hydrogen bond resulted in the "loop model" and "train model" as the main adsorption mechanisms of PS. The molecules covered the hematite surface and prevented the adsorption of the collector. The flotation of hematite was depressed. As a result, the selective flocculation and flotation of fine siderite were realized.
