Interaction of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with hydrophilic ionic liquid 1‑butyl‑3‑methylimidazolium chloride [C4mim][Cl] at different temperatures – Conductometric and FT-IR spectroscopic study

Optimizing the method for removing MSNs templates using an ionic liquid ([C4mim]Cl)

The key step in preparing mesoporous silica is to remove the organic template agent, and the most common method used to achieve this goal is high-temperature calcination. However, this method has many disadvantages, one of which is that it reduces the silanol density on the surface of mesoporous silica, which affects its subsequent modification. Ionic liquids (ILs) are often used as extractants. In this work, the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) IL is considered, and the effects of its concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time as well as HCl concentration on the extraction rate and silanol density were investigated using an IL extraction template agent (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)). The results show that an IL concentration of 10%, a reaction temperature of 120 °C, a reaction time of 12 h, and an HCl concentration of 1% are the best reaction parameters; with these parameters, the extraction rate and the silanol density were found to be 93.19% and 2.23%, respectively. The silanol density of mesoporous silica treated by calcination is only 0.81%. A higher silanol density provides more reaction sites, so that the modified mesoporous silica treated with the IL can be loaded with more Zn ions.

Constituent- and Composition-Dependent Surfactant Aggregation in (Lanthanide Salt + Urea) Deep Eutectic Solvents

Due to the ease of tailoring the physicochemical properties by simply changing a constituent or composition, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) possess widely varying capabilities for surfactant self-assembly that could depend on the surfactant headgroup charge. The self-aggregation process of three surfactants, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and Triton X-100 (TX-100), dissolved in DESs composed of a lanthanide salt (Ln) and urea (U) is investigated. The role of the identity of the metal salt is assessed by using [La(NO₃)₃·6H₂O] (La) and [Ce(NO₃)₃·6H₂O] (Ce) and that of the composition is deciphered by systematically changing the mole ratio of the metal salt and urea in (La/U) DESs. The response to a fluorescence probe pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde along with electrical conductance and surface tension measurements is used to obtain the critical aggregation concentration (CAC). While the CACs in 1:3.5 (Ln/U) for SDS are significantly lower than that in water, the values are marginally higher for CTAB and TX-100. The CACs for all three surfactants are similar in 1:3.5 (La/U) and (Ce/U) DESs, implying that the identity of the metal in the salt is not so important. Increasing the urea composition in (La/U) DESs results in increased CAC for SDS and CTAB; however, a minimal decrease in CAC is observed for TX-100. From the temperature dependence of CAC, thermodynamic parameters, ΔG_agg⁰, ΔH_agg⁰, and ΔS_agg⁰, of the surfactant self-aggregation process are estimated. These parameters reveal that while at a lower urea content, the SDS/CTAB self-assembly process is enthalpically driven, it becomes entropically favored at higher urea concentrations. The TX-100 self-aggregation in these DESs is found to be strongly enthalpically favored and entropically un-favored. These parameters are explained as a combination of passage of the solvophobic surfactant chain from the bulk DES to the aggregate pseudo-phase and differential orientation/organization of DES constituents around surfactant monomers and/or aggregates.

Investigation of micellar and interfacial phenomenon of amitriptyline hydrochloride with cationic ester-bonded gemini surfactant mixture in different solvent media

Herein, the interaction among the antidepressant drug amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMT) and a green gemini surfactant, ethane-1, 2-diyl bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-tetradecylammoniumacetoxy) dichloride (14-E2-14), via numerous techniques such as tensiometry, fluorimetry, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy in three different media (aqueous 0.050 mol·kg^-1 NaCl, 0.50 and 1.0 mol·kg^-1 urea) were investigated. AMT is used to treat mental illness or mood problems, such as depression. The aggregation of biologically active ingredients can enhance the bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs. A significant interaction between AMT and 14-E2-14 was detected by tensiometric study as the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of AMT+14-E2-14 is reduced upon an increase of mole fraction (α₁) of 14-E2-14. The decrease in cmc indicates the nonideality of studied mixtures of different compositions. Although, employed drug AMT is freely soluble in the aqueous and non-aqueous system but is not hydrophobic enough to act as its carrier. Instead, gemini surfactant formed spherical micelles in an aqueous system and their high solubilization capability, as well as their relatively lower cmc value, makes them highly stable in vivo. The cmc values of AMT+14-E-14 mixtures in all cases were further decreased and increased in NaCl and urea solutions respectively as compared with the aqueous system. Numerous micellar, interfacial, and thermodynamic parameters have been measured by applying various theoretical models. The obtained changes in the physicochemical assets of AMT upon adding of 14-E2-14 are likely to enhance the industrial and pharmaceutical applications of gemini surfactants. The negative interaction parameters (β^m and β^σ), indicate synergistic attraction is occurring in the mixed systems. The aggregation number (N_agg), Stern–Volmer constant (K_sv), etc. are attained through the fluorescence method, also supporting the attractive interaction behavior of AMT+14-E2-14 mixtures in all solvents. The N_agg was found to increase in the salt solution and decrease in the urea system compared with the aqueous solution. FT-IR and UV-visible analysis also depict the interaction between the constituent alike tensiometry and fluorimetry methods. The results suggested that gemini surfactants may serve as a capable drug delivery agent for antidepressants, improving their bioavailability.
