Association behavior of a mixed system of the antidepressant drug imipramine hydrochloride and dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt: Effect of temperature and salt

A novel amidine-based fluorescent probe TPE-4+ for rapid detection of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate

An accurate, fast, and simple surfactant detection method is of great significance for monitoring surfactants pollution. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is one of the most commonly used anionic surfactants and has been listed as an important monitoring pollutant for surfactant residues. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe named TPE-4+ with four amidines as the recognition functional group and tetraphenylethene as the fluorophore was fabricated. Due to the special intramolecular environment, the probe showed selectively identification towards SDS which made an aggregation induced fluorescence enhencement. Under the optimum conditions, the fluorescence enhencement of TPE-4+ is linearly related to the concentration of SDS in the range of 5.0-60.0 μM with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.010 μM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.034 μM. Relative to the reported methods, the probe in our work showed better selectivity and sensitivity. The proposed method was successfully applied for the SDS determination of disinfecting bowls.

Study on the association and phase separation behavior of surfactants and promethazine hydrochloride: impact of ammonium electrolytes

In the current study, the association and phase separation of cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and nonionic Triton X-100 (TX-100) surfactants with promethazine hydrochloride (PMH) were investigated in aqueous ammonium-based solutions. The micellization nature of the TTAB and PMH drug mixture was examined by evaluating critical micelle concentration (CMC) and counterion binding extent (β) at different salt contents and temperatures (298.15-323.15 K). Micelle formation in the TTAB + PMH mixture was enhanced in the presence of ammonium salts, whereas the process was delayed with an increase in temperature in the respective salt solution. With an increase in salt content, the cloud point (CP) of the TX-100 + PMH mixture decreased, which revealed that the respective progression occurred through the salting out phenomenon. In micellization and clouding processes, the changes in free energies ΔG0m and ΔG0c were found to be negative and positive, respectively, demonstrating that the corresponding processes are spontaneous and non-spontaneous. Standard enthalpies (ΔH0m/ΔH0c) and standard entropies (ΔS0m/ΔS0c) for the association and clouding processes, respectively, were also calculated and discussed. The core forces amid TTAB/TX-100 and PMH in the manifestation of electrolytes are dipole-dipole and hydrophobic forces among the employed components according to the values for ΔH0m/ΔH0c and ΔS0m/ΔS0c, respectively.

Aggregation phenomena and physico-chemical properties of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and protein (bovine serum albumin) mixture: Influence of electrolytes and temperature

It is important for biological, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries to understand how proteins and surfactants interact. Herein, the interaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) in different inorganic salts (KCl, K2SO4, K3PO4.H2O) has been explored through the conductivity measurement method at different temperatures (300.55 to 325.55 K) with a specific salt concentration and at a fixed temperature (310.55 K) using different salts concentrations. The extent of micelle ionization (α) and different thermodynamic parameters associated with BSA and TTAB mixtures in salt solutions were calculated. Evaluation of the magnitudes of ∆Hm0 and ∆Sm0 showed that the association was exothermic and primarily an enthalpy-operated process in all cases at lower contents of BSA, but the system became endothermic, and entropy driven in the presence of K3PO4.H2O at a relatively higher concentration of BSA. The enthalpy-entropy compensation variables were determined, which explained the types and nature of interactions between TTAB and BSA in salt media. Molecular docking analysis revealed that the main stabilizing factors in the BSA-TTAB complex are electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. These findings aligned with the significant results obtained from the conductometry method regarding the nature and characteristics of binding forces observed between BSA and TTAB.

Insights into the Characterization of the Self-Assembly of Different Types of Amphiphilic Molecules Using Dynamic Light Scattering

The self-assembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecylsulfate, Triton X-100, and sulfobetaine surfactants in aqueous solutions was examined by dynamic light scattering, both in the presence and absence of 0.1 M NaCl salt, across various temperatures. For each surfactant, critical parameters, such as concentration and phase transition temperatures, of micelles were determined by monitoring changes in the hydrodynamic diameter with concentration and temperature. Additionally, we explored the self-assembly behavior of these surfactants when they are introduced alongside polystyrene nanoparticles. Our findings enabled the elucidation of surfactant molecule adsorption mechanisms onto polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces. Furthermore, by analyzing variations in the z-average diameter and zeta potential, we were able to establish the Krafft point, a parameter that remains imperceptible when polystyrene nanoparticles are absent from the solution.

Association of bovine serum albumin and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride: An investigation of the effects of temperature and hydrotropes

Interactions between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) were studied utilizing conductivity approach. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), micelle ionization (α) along with counter ion binding (β) of CTAC micellization in aqueous solutions of BSA/BSA + hydrotropes (HYTs) have been computed at 298.15-323.15 K. Increase in temperatures of CTAC + BSA/BSA mixtures in HYTs resulted in elevation of CMC due to the association of chemical species in the respective systems which reduced the degree of micelle formation. CTAC + BSA consumed greater extents of surfactant species to generate micelle formation in the corresponding systems at higher temperatures. Standard free energy change associated with the assembling processes of CTAC in BSA was found negative suggesting the spontaneous nature of micellization processes. Magnitudes of ∆Hm0 and ∆Sm0 obtained from CTAC + BSA aggregation revealed the existence of H-bonding, electrostatic interactions along with hydrophobic forces among the constituents employed in the respective systems. ∆Gm0 The estimated thermodynamic parameters of transfer (free energy (∆Gm,tr0), enthalpy (∆Hm,tr0) and entropy (∆Sm,tr0)) and compensation variables (∆Hm0,∗ and Tc) provided significant insights on the association behaviors of the CTAC + BSA system in the selected HYTs solutions.

Physico-chemical properties of the association of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and bovine serum albumin mixture in aqueous-organic mixed solvents

Herein, we have investigated the association behavior of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) using the conductivity method in H₂O and H₂O + organic mixed solvents at different temperatures. The association phenomenon was detected from the deviation of the conductivity changes with enhancing the surfactant concentration and changes of numerous physico-chemical properties, such as CMC, α, β and thermodynamic variables (∆G⁰_m, ∆H⁰_m and ∆S⁰_m). The values of CMC for the CTAB + BSA system in 10 % (v/v) solvents follow the trend: CMC_water < CMC_water+DMSO < CMC_water+AN < CMC_water+DX < CMC_water+DMF. The interaction of BSA with CTAB is notably influenced due to a change of temperature and extent of hydration of BSA and surfactant. The obtained values of -∆G⁰_m manifest that the association of BSA and CTAB mixture is a spontaneous process, while the values of -∆G⁰_m in presence of 10 % (v/v) aq. organic solvents come out in the given sequence: -∆G_m^o (H₂O + DMSO) > ∆G_m^o (H₂O + DMF) > -∆G_m^o (H₂O + DX) > -∆G_m^o (H₂O + AN). The H-bonding, ion-dipole, along with the hydrophobic interactions, are believed to be the binding interactions between BSA and CTAB in the study media.

A Novel Study on the Self-Assembly Behavior of Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) Polymer Probed by Curcumin Fluorescence

Understanding the self-assembly behavior of block copolymers is of great importance due to their usefulness in a wide range of applications. In this work, the physical properties of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA polymer) are studied for the first time in solution using the fluorescence technique and curcumin as a molecular probe. First, curcumin at a concentration of 2 μM was added to different concentrations of PLGA, and the fluorescence of curcumin was tracked. It was found that the critical micellar concentration (CMC) was equal to 0.31 g/L and the critical micellar temperature (CMT) was obtained to be 25 °C. Furthermore, an insight on the effect of NaCl salt on the CMC value of PLGA is assessed through curcumin probing. A decrease in the CMC has been observed with the increase in the concentration of NaCl, which could be due to the salting out effect. Moreover, in order to understand the aggregation behavior of PLGA in different solutions, CMC experiments were investigated using chloroform as a solvent. Results showed that the solvent does not affect the CMC value of the polymer; however, it only affects the shape of the obtained micelle forming a reversed micelle. Finally, fluorescence quenching of curcumin with hydrophobic cetyl-pyridinium bromide (CPB) and hydrophilic KI quenchers was established, where it was proved that curcumin is located near the hydrophobic pocket of the Stern layer of the PLGA micelle.

Interaction of TX-100 and Antidepressant Imipramine Hydrochloride Drug Mixture: Surface Tension, 1H NMR, and FT-IR Investigation

Interfacial interaction amongst the antidepressant drug-imipramine hydrochloride (IMP) and pharmaceutical excipient (triton X-100 (TX-100-nonionic surfactant)) mixed system of five various ratios in dissimilar media (H₂O/50 mmol·kg⁻¹ NaCl/250 mmol·kg⁻¹ urea) was investigated through the surface tension method. In addition, in the aqueous solution, the ¹H-NMR, as well as FT-IR studies of the studied pure and mixed system were also explored and deliberated thoroughly. In NaCl media, properties of pure/mixed interfacial surfaces enhanced as compared with the aqueous system, and consequently the synergism/attractive interaction among constituents (IMP and TX-100) grew, whereas in urea (U) media a reverse effect was detected. Surface excess concentration (Γ_max), composition of surfactant at mixed monolayer (X1σ), activity coefficient (f₁^σ (TX-100) and f₂^σ (IMP)), etc. were determined and discussed thoroughly. At mixed interfacial surfaces interaction, parameter (β^σ) reveals the attractive/synergism among the components. The Gibbs energy of adsorption (ΔGadso) value attained was negative throughout all employed media viewing the spontaneity of the adsorption process. The ¹H NMR spectroscopy was also employed to examine the molecular interaction of IMP and TX-100 in an aqueous system. FT-IR method as well illustrated the interaction amongst the component. The findings of the current study proposed that TX-100 surfactant could act as an efficient drug delivery vehicle for an antidepressant drug. Gels can be used as drug dosage forms due to recent improvements in the design of surfactant systems. Release mechanism of drugs from surfactant/polymer gels is dependent upon the microstructures of the gels and the state of the drugs within the system.

Polyelectrolyte–Dye Interactions: An Overview

Polyelectrolytes are polymers with repeating units of ionizable groups coupled with counterions. Recently, polyelectrolytes have drawn significant attention as highly promising macromolecular materials with potential for applications in almost every sector of our daily lives. Dyes are another class of chemical compounds that can interact with substrates and subsequently impart color through the selective absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the visible range. This overview begins with an introduction to polyelectrolytes and dyes with their respective definitions, classifications (based on origin, molecular architecture, etc.), and applications in diverse fields. Thereafter, it explores the different possible interactions between polyelectrolytes and dyes, which is the main focus of this study. The various mechanisms involved in dye–polyelectrolyte interactions and the factors that influence them are also surveyed. Finally, these discussions are summarized, and their future perspectives are presented.

Influences of NaCl and Na2SO4 on the Micellization Behavior of the Mixture of Cetylpyridinium Chloride + Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone at Several Temperatures

Herein, the conductivity measurement technique is used to determine the interactions that may occur between polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) polymer and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) surfactant in the presence of NaCl and Na2SO4 of fixed concentration at variable temperatures (298.15-323.15 K) with an interval of 5 K. In the absence or presence of salts, we observed three critical micelle concentrations (CMC) for the CPC + PVP mixture. In all situations, CMC1 values of CPC + PVP system were found to be higher in water than in attendance of salts (NaCl and Na2SO4). Temperature and additives have the tendency to affect counterion binding values. Various physico-chemical parameters were analyzed and demonstrated smoothly, including free energy (ΔG0m), enthalpy (ΔH0m) and entropy change (ΔS0m). The micellization process is achieved to be spontaneous based on the obtained negative ΔG0m values. The linearity of the ΔHmo and ΔSmo values is excellent. The intrinsic enthalpy gain (ΔH0*m) and compensation temperature (Tc) were calculated and discussed with logical points. Interactions of polymer hydrophobic chains or the polymer + surfactant associated with amphiphilic surface-active drugs can employ a strong impact on the behavior of the gels.

Synthesis, self-assembly and biolabeling of perylene diimide-tyrosine alkyl amide based amphiphiles: nanomolar detection of AOT surfactant

Perylene diimide-tyrosine alkyl amide based amphiphiles were synthesized and characterized. PDI 3a showed ‘beehive’ nanostructure and applied for biolabeling of MG-63 live cells. PDI 3b can be used for NIR detection of anionic surfactant.

Effects of various media on micellization, adsorption and thermodynamic behaviour of imipramine hydrochloride and antimicrobial surfactant mixtures

The effect of various media (aqueous, NaCl, urea (U) and thiourea (TU)) on the micellization and adsorption activity of varied mixtures of imipramine hydrochloride (IMP) and benzethonium chloride (BZCl) is investigated via tensiometry. In an aqueous medium, the interactions between IMP and BZCl are also evaluated using UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopy. The interaction between components increases with increased mole fraction (α 1) of BZCl in the mixed system (IMP + BZCl). Different parameters, such as micellar and the mixed monolayer component composition, the interaction parameters of the solution and the interface, the activity coefficients of the components in solution and at the interface, and thermodynamic parameters, are computed using different proposed theoretical models (i.e. Clint, Motomura, Rubingh and Rosen). The cmc values obtained for the pure components and mixtures (IMP + BZCl) of all the compositions are found to be less in NaCl than in the aqueous solution while found more in the presence of U or TU. TU is more effective in increasing the cmc of the pure and mixed systems than U. The Gibbs free energy ( Δ G mic ∘ ) values of the studied pure and mixed systems are negative, showing the spontaneous nature of the reaction.

Impacts of polyols and temperature on the micellization, interaction and thermodynamics behavior of the mixture of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and polyvinyl alcohol

Herein, the aggregation manner of the mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) was performed in polyols (glucose, maltose and galactose) media over 300.55–320.55 K temperatures range with 5 K interval through conductivity measurement method. The micelle formation of TTAB + PVA mixture was identified by the assessment of critical micelle concentration (CMC) from the plots of specific conductivity (κ) versus TTAB concentration. The degree of micelle ionization (α), the extent of bound counter ions (β) as well as thermodynamic properties ( Δ G m 0 ${\Delta}{G}_{m}^{0}$ , Δ H m 0 ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{0}$ and Δ S m 0 ${\Delta}{S}_{m}^{0}$ ) of TTAB + PVA systems have been estimated. The CMC values reveal that the micelle formation of TTAB + PVA mixture experience an enhancement in the manifestation of polyols. The values of free energy of micellization ( Δ G m 0 ${\Delta}{G}_{m}^{0}$ ) are negative for the TTAB + PVA system in aqueous polyols media, suggesting a spontaneous aggregation phenomenon. The Δ H m 0 ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{0}$ and Δ S m 0 ${\Delta}{S}_{m}^{0}$ values of TTAB + PVA systems direct that the PVA molecule interacts with TTAB through the exothermic, ion-dipole, and hydrophobic interactions. The thermodynamic properties of transfer were also determined for the move of TTAB + PVA mixture from H2O to water + polyols mixed solvents. The values of compensation temperature (T c) and intrinsic enthalpy gain ( Δ H m 0 , ∗ ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{0,\ast }$ ) were evaluated and discussed for the studied system.

Interaction of cationic surfactant with acid yellow dye in absence/presence of organic and inorganic additives: conductivity and dye solubilization methods

In the present study, the conductometric and dye-solubilization techniques have been utilized to investigate the interaction between an anionic dye (acid yellow 23 [AY]) and a cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide [CTAB]) in presence of organic (ethanol)/inorganic (NaCl) additives. From the conductometric method, two critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were found for AY + CTAB mixture in an aqueous system and the cmc values were found to undergo a change with the variation of AY concentrations. The cmc values of AY + CTAB systems were observed higher in the alcoholic medium, while the same was found to be lower in the NaCl solutions. The change in cmc of AY + CTAB systems shows an U-like curve with an increase of temperature. The negative free energy of micellization ( Δ G m o ${\Delta}{G}_{m}^{o}$ ) for the AY + CTAB systems has indicated a spontaneous micelle formation in all of the cases studied. The enthalpy ( Δ H m o ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{o}$ ), as well as the entropy of micellization ( Δ S m o ${\Delta}{S}_{m}^{o}$ ) for the AY + CTAB systems, were assessed and discussed with proper reasoning. Additionally, the enthalpy-entropy compensation parameters were also investigated and illustrated. The solubility of AY and C D was observed to rise linearly with an increase in the concentration of CTAB/NaCl solution. The solubilization capacity (χ) of AY, the molar partition coefficient (K M) amongst the micellar and the aqueous phase, and free energy of solubilization ( Δ G S o ${\Delta}{G}_{S}^{o}$ ) were evaluated and discussed in detail. The former parameters undergo an increase with an increase of NaCl concentrations.
