Synthesis of conductive poly (3-aminobenzoic acid) nanostructures with different shapes in acidic ionic liquids medium

Cytochrome c electrochemical detection utilizing molecularly imprinted poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) on a disposable screen printed carbon electrode

Cytochrome c (cyt c) has been found to play a function in apoptosis in cell-free models. This work presents the creation of molecularly imprinted conducting poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiopene) (MIPEDOT) on the surface of a screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) for cyt c. Cyt c was imprinted by electropolymerization due to the presence of an EDOT monomer hydrophobic functional group on SPCE, using CV to obtain highly selective materials with excellent molecular recognition ability. MIPEDOT was characterized by CV, EIS, and DPV using ferricyanide/ferrocyanide as a redox probe. Further, the characterization of the sensor was accomplished using SEM for surface morphological confirmation. Using CV, the peak current measured at the potential of +1 to -1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) is linear in the cyt c concentration range from 1 to 1200 pM, showing a remarkably low detection limit of 0.5 pM (sensitivity:0.080 μA pM). Moreover, the applicability of the approach was successfully confirmed with the detection of cyt c in biological samples (human plasma). Similarly, our research has proven a low-cost, simple, and efficient sensing platform for cyt c detection, rendering it a viable tool for the future improvement of reliable and exact non-encroaching cell death detection.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted Fabrication of Bioactive Heterogeneous Magnetic Nanocatalyst with Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities for the Synthesis of Polyhydroquinoline Derivatives

Antibacterial materials have obtained much attention in recent years due to the presence of hazardous agents causing oxidative stress and observation of pathogens. However, materials with antioxidant and antibacterial activities can cause toxicity due to their low biocompatibility and safety profile, urging scientists to follow new ways in the synthesis of such materials. Ionic liquids have been employed as a green and environmentally solvent for the fabrication of electrically conductive polymers. In the present study, an antibacterial poly(p-phenylenediamine)@Fe3O4 (PpPDA@Fe3O4) nanocomposite was fabricated using [HPy][HSO4] ionic liquid. The chemical preparation of PpPDA@Fe3O4 nanocomposite was initiated through the oxidative polymerization of p-phenylenediamine by ammonium persulfate in the presence of [HPy][HSO4]. The PpPDA@Fe3O4 nanocomposite exhibited antibacterial properties against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) bacteria. The PpPDA@Fe3O4 nanocomposite was employed as a heterogeneous nanocatalysis for one-pot synthesis of polyhydroquinoline derivatives using aromatic aldehyde, dimedone, benzyl acetoacetate, and ammonium acetate. Polyhydroquinoline derivatives were synthesized in significant yields (90-97%) without a difficult work-up procedure in short reaction times. Additionally, PpPDA@Fe3O4 nanocatalyst was recycled for at least five consecutive catalytic runs with a minor decrease in the catalytic activity. In this case, 11 derivatives of polyhydroquinoline showed in vitro antioxidant activity between 70-98%.

Solid-state synthesis of CdFe2O4 binary catalyst for potential application in renewable hydrogen fuel generation

Clean energy is highly needed at this time when the energy requirements are rapidly increasing. The observed increasing energy requirement are largely due to continued industrialization and global population explosion. The current means of energy source is not sustainable because of several reasons, most importantly, environmental pollution and human health deterioration due to burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, this study develops a new catalyst for hydrogen and oxygen evolution by water splitting as a potential energy vector. The binary metal oxide catalyst CdFe₂O₄ was synthesized by the solventless solid-mechanical alloying method. The as-prepared catalyst was well characterized by several methods including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform infrared red spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (XEDS). The as-prepared catalyst, CdFe₂O₄ was successfully applied for water electrolysis at a moderate overpotential (470 mV). Specifically, the onset potential for the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER) were 1.6 V_/RHE and 0.2 V_/RHE respectively (vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode). The electrode potential required to reach 10 mA/cm^-2 for OER (in alkaline medium) and HER (in acidic medium) was 1.70 V_/RHE (corresponding to overpotential η = 0.47 and − 0.30 V_/RHE (η = − 0.30 V) respectively. Similarly, the developed OER and HER catalyst displayed high current and potential stability for a period of 12 h. This approach is seen as the right track of making water electrolysis for hydrogen energy feasible through provision of low-energy requirement for the electrolytic process. Therefore, CdFe₂O₄ is a potential water splitting catalyst for hydrogen evolution which is a clean fuel and an antidote for world dependence on fossil fuel for energy generation.

Development of dispersive solid-phase microextraction coupled with high-pressure liquid chromatography for the preconcentration and determination of the selected neonicotinoid insecticides

Neonicotinoid insecticides have raised a lot of societal concerns due to their environmental ubiquity and unique mode of action. Therefore, it is of great research interest to monitor their occurrence in the environmental waters. However, these compounds exist at low concentrations that is below instrument detection limits. This study reports the applicability of magnetic poly (3 aminobenzoic acid)-based activated carbon (Fe3O4@PABA/AC) composite as an adsorbent in dispersive magnetic solid-phase microextraction (d-MSPME) of neonicotinoid insecticides from wastewater and river water samples. The as-synthesized adsorbent was characterized and confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The analytes of interest were detected and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector (HPLC–DAD). The parameters affecting the extraction and preconcentration processes, such as pH, extraction time, mass of adsorbent, desorption time and eluent volume, were optimized using fractional factorial design and central composite design. Under optimum conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were in the ranges of 0.41–0.82 µg L−1 and 1.4–2.7 µg L−1, respectively. The linearity ranged from 1.4–700 µg L−1 with correlation of determination (R2) values varied between 0.9933 and 0.9987. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were 0.35–0.75% and 1.7–5.5%, respectively. The spike recovery experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the d-MSPME analytical method in real samples, and the percentage recoveries ranged from 86.7 to 99.2%. Therefore, this method shows great potential applicability in preconcentrating the pollutants from the environment.
