Expansion and shrinkage of the electrical double layer in charge-asymmetric electrolytes: A non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann description

Theoretical description of the electrical double layer for a mixture of n ionic species with arbitrary size and charge asymmetries. I. Spherical geometry

In this work, we propose a theoretical finite element description of the ionic profiles of a general mixture of n species of spherical charged particles dissolved in an implicit solvent, with arbitrary size and charge asymmetries, neutralizing a spherical macroion. This approach aims to close the gap between the nano- and the micro-scales in macroion solutions, taking into account the ion correlations and ionic excluded volume effects consistently. When these last two features are neglected, the classical non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory for n ionic species-with different ionic closest approach distances to the colloidal surface-is recovered as a limit case. As a proof of concept, we study the electrical double layer of an electroneutral mixture of oppositely charged colloids and small microions, with an asymmetry 1:333 in size and 1:10 in valence, in salt-free and added salt environments. Our theoretical approach displays a good agreement regarding the ionic profiles, the integrated charge, and the mean electrostatic potential obtained from molecular dynamics simulations with explicit-sized microions. Although the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann colloid-colloid and colloid-microion profiles differ notably from those obtained via molecular dynamics simulations with explicit small-sized ions, the associated mean electrostatic potential agrees well with the corresponding explicit microion simulations.

An evaluation of the capacitive behavior of supercapacitors as a function of the radius of cations using simulations with a constant potential method

We report on the atomistic molecular dynamics, applying the constant potential method to determine the structural and electrostatic interactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface of electrochemical supercapacitors as a function of the cation radius (Cs⁺, Rb⁺, K⁺, Na⁺, Li⁺). We find that the electrical double layer is susceptible to the size, hydration layer volume, and cations' mobility and analyzed them. Besides, the transient potential shows an increase in magnitude and length as a function of the monocation size, i.e., Cs⁺ > Rb⁺ > K⁺ > Na⁺ > Li⁺. On the other hand, the charge distribution along the electrode surface is less uniform for large monocations. Nonetheless, the difference is not observed as a function of the radius of the cation for the integral capacitance. Our results are comparable to studies that employed the fixed charge method for treating such systems.

High efficient dye removal with hydrolyzed ethanolamine-Polyacrylonitrile UF membrane: Rejection of anionic dye and selective adsorption of cationic dye

The dye-water treatment using UF membrane is still a challenge. In the present study, the optimized PAN-ETA ultrafiltration membrane was hydrolyzed and subsequently characterized by SEM, IR, CA, XPS, NMR, mechanic measurement, etc. The obtained membrane (H-PAN-ETA) was used for dye removal and it showed both an excellent anti-dye fouling and a good rejection property for anionic dyes. I.e. 96% rejection for methyl blue (MB), 99% for congo red (CR), 94% for acid fuchsin (AF) with no sign of contamination by dye. The flux of H-PAN-ETA membrane maintained at 50-53 L m^-2⋅ h^-1 during a 10-h filtration, which is higher than that of tight UF membranes reported. Meanwhile, H-PAN-ETA membrane was able to selectively remove cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MEB), rhodamine B (RB) and, crystal violet (CV), or the mixture of anionic dye/cationic dye by adsorption process. Its adsorption capacity remained unchanged after 20 cycles. Finally, the immobile electrical double layer (EDL) theory combined with electrostatic force was introduced to explain the separation mechanism of charged UF membrane, which is helpful to instruct the preparation of UF membrane for dye removal.

Coating for preventing nonspecific adhesion mediated biofouling in salty systems: Effect of the electrostatic and van der waals interactions

Development of anti-biofouling coating has attracted immense attention for reducing the massively detrimental effects of biofouling in systems ranging from ship hulls and surgical instruments to catheters, implants, and stents. In this paper, we propose a model to quantify the role of electrostatic and van der Waals (vdW) forces in dictating the efficacy of dielectric coating for preventing the nonspecific adhesion mediated biofouling in salty systems. The model considers a generic charged lipid-bilayer encapsulated vesicle-like structure representing the bio-organism. Also, we consider the fouling caused by the nonspecific adhesion of the bio-organism on the substrate, without accounting for the explicit structures (e.g., pili, appendages) or conditions (e.g., surface adhesins secreted by the organisms) involved in the adhesion of specific microorganism. The model is tested by considering the properties of actual coating materials and biofouling causing microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, algae). Results show that while the electrostatic-vdW effect can be significant in anti-biofouling action for cases where the salt concentration is relatively low (e.g., saline solution for surgical instruments), it might not be effective for marine environment where the salt concentration is much higher. The findings, therefore, point to a hitherto unexplored driving mechanism of anti-biofouling action of the coating. Such an identification will also enable the appropriate choices of the coating materials (e.g., possible dielectric material with volume charge) and other system parameters (e.g., salinity of the solution for storing the surgical instruments) that will significantly improve the efficiency of the coatings in preventing the nonspecific adhesion mediated biofouling.
