Abstract
In this article, three unsymmetrical 7-(diethylamino)quinolone chalcones with D-π-A-D and D-π-A-π-D type push-pull molecular arrangements were synthesized via a Claisen-Schmidt reaction. Using 7-(diethylamino)quinolone and vanillin as electron donor (D) moieties, these were linked together through the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl system acting as a linker and an electron acceptor (A). The photophysical properties were studied, revealing significant Stokes shifts and strong solvatofluorochromism caused by the ICT and TICT behavior produced by the push-pull effect. Moreover, quenching caused by the population of the TICT state in THF-H2O mixtures was observed, and the emission in the solid state evidenced a red shift compared to the emission in solution. These findings were corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing the wb97xd/6-311G(d,p) method. The cytotoxic activity of the synthesized compounds was assessed on BHK-21, PC3, and LNCaP cell lines, revealing moderate activity across all compounds. Notably, compound 5b exhibited the highest activity against LNCaP cells, with an LC50 value of 10.89 μM. Furthermore, the compounds were evaluated for their potential as imaging agents in living prostate cells. The results demonstrated their favorable cell permeability and strong emission at 488 nm, positioning them as promising candidates for cancer cell imaging applications.

Abstract
A divergent diazo approach toward alkyl 5/4-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-4/5-carboxylates has been developed. The reaction of 1,3-diketones with alkyl 2-diazo-3-oxo-3-(2H-azirin-2-yl)propanoates catalyzed by Co(acac)3 or Ni(acac)2 gives various alkyl 3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-2-diazo-3-oxopropanoate in good yields. The latter undergo Wolff rearrangement followed by the 6π-cyclization of transient ketene to form alkyl 5-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-4-carboxylates bearing various substituents in positions 1, 2, 7, and 8, as well as derivatives of methyl 4-hydroxy-6H-thieno[2,3-e]indole-5-carboxylates and methyl 5-hydroxy-7H-benzo[c]carbazole-6-carboxylate under thermolysis or Rh2(OAc)4 catalysis. Isomeric benzoindoles, alkyl 4-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-5-carboxylates, have been prepared by Boc-protection of the pyrrole nitrogen of alkyl 3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-2-diazo-3-oxopropanoates followed by an intramolecular formal carbene insertion into the aromatic C-H bond catalyzed by Cu(OTf)2. The hydroxyl group of alkyl 5/4-hydroxy-3H-benzo[e]indole-4/5-carboxylates, through the formation of the corresponding triflates, allows the introduction of various substituents into the 5/4 position of benzo[e]indoles using the cross-coupling reaction and even form a new heterocyclic backbone, benzo[k]pyrrolo[2,3-i]phenanthridine, via a tandem Suzuki reaction/nucleophilic acyl substitution.

Abstract
Imidazole-based donor-acceptor materials are well known for their polarity-controlled trade-off phenomenon between the localized excitation-based short-wavelength (SW) emission in nonpolar solvents and charge transfer dominated long-wavelength (LW) emission in polar solvents. To attain concurrent SW- and LW-based dual-emission characteristics, a series of imidazole-based donor-acceptor fluorophores (CBImDCN, TPImDCN, PZImDCN) possessing different electron-donating groups such as carbazole, triphenylamine, and phenothiazine linked via the N-position of the imidazole core unit were synthesized and verified by NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques. As a result, the strong donating TPImDCN and PZImDCN exhibited dual emission in different solvents of varying polarity, covering the blue (SW) and green/orange (LW) regions. On the other hand, in contrast, only an SW emission band is observed with the weak donating CBImDCN. Moreover, PZImDCN shows panchromatic emission under 365 nm illumination, while only orange color emission is observed under visible light excitation, revealing two different origins of SW and LW emissions, as also evidenced from DFT calculations. Overall, this work reveals a new approach for attaining concurrent SW and LW emission characteristics from imidazole-based D-A materials and sheds light on the design and development of novel panchromatic emitters with intriguing properties for lighting and display applications.

Abstract
The introduction of an electron-donating triphenylamine motive into a 2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) moiety, a cornerstone molecular unit in coordination chemistry, opens new ways for a rational design of photophysical properties of organic and inorganic compounds. A push-pull compound, 4′-(4-(di(4-tert-butylphenyl)amine)phenyl)-2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (tBuTPAterpy), was thoroughly investigated with the use of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that solvent parameters have an enormous influence on the optical properties of this molecule, acting as knobs for external control of its photophysics. The Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process introduces a remarkable solvent polarity effect on the emission spectra without affecting the lowest absorption band, as confirmed by DFT simulations, including solvation effects. The calculations ascribe the lowest absorption transitions to two singlet ICT excited states, S1 and S2, with S1 having several orders of magnitude higher oscillator strength than the “dark” S2 state. Temperature and viscosity investigations suggest the existence of two emitting excited states with different structural conformations. The phosphorescence emission band observed at 77 K is assigned to a localized 3terpy state. Finally, protonation studies show that tBuTPAterpy undergoes a reversible process, making it a promising probe of the pH level in the context of acidity determination.

Abstract
Hydrocortisone (termed as D1) and dexamethasone (termed as D2) are corticosteroids currently used to treat COVID-19. COVID-19 is a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Exploring additional chemical properties of drugs used in the treatment protocols for COVID-19 could help scientists alike improve these treatment protocols and potentially even the vaccines (i.e., Janssen, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech). In this work, the charge-transfer (CT) properties of these two corticosteroids (D1 and D2) with two universal acceptors: 7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (termed as TCNQ) and fluoranil (termed as TFQ) in five different solvents were investigated. The examined solvents were MeOH, EtOH, MeCN, CH2Cl2, and CHCl3. The CT interactions formed stable corticosteroid CT complexes in all examined solvents. Several spectroscopic parameters were derived, and the oscillator strength (f) and transition dipole moment (μe.g. ) values revealed that the interaction between the investigated corticosteroids with TCNQ acceptor is much stronger than their interaction with TFQ acceptor. The CT interactions were proposed to process via n → π* transition.

Abstract
COVID-19 is the disease caused by a novel coronavirus (CoV) named the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (termed SARS coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2). Since the first case reported in December 2019, infections caused by this novel virus have led to a continuous global pandemic that has placed an unprecedented burden on health, economic, and social systems worldwide. In response, multiple therapeutic options have been developed to stop this pandemic. One of these options is based on traditional corticosteroids, however, chemical modifications to enhance their efficacy remain largely unexplored. Obtaining additional insight into the chemical and physical properties of pharmacologically effective drugs used to combat COVID-19 will help physicians and researchers alike to improve current treatments and vaccines (i.e., Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Janssen). Herein, we examined the charge-transfer properties of two corticosteroids used as adjunctive therapies in the treatment of COVID-19, hydrocortisone and dexamethasone, as donors with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone as an acceptor in various solvents. We found that the examined donors reacted strongly with the acceptor in CH2Cl2 and CHCl3 solvents to create stable compounds with novel clinical potential.

Abstract
We have synthesized a π-conjugated acceptor-donor-acceptor-donor (A2-D2-A1-D1) type of unsymmetrical squaraine dye, signified by USQ-1 based on 1-ethyl-2,3,3,8-tetramethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,2-h] quinoline moiety to improve the absorption as well as emission spectra to the red-emitting region. The influence of pyridine as a subsidiary electron acceptor unit on various properties in USQ-1 dye was compared with their close relative dye (USQ-2). The synthesized dyes were examined by FT-IR, HR-MS, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. This novel unsymmetrical squaraine dye shows a strong absorption with high molar absorptivity (˃105 L mol-1 cm-1) in the range of 676-661 nm from non-polar to polar solvents. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process from donor to the acceptor moiety in a non-polar to polar solvent has been investigated with the help of oscillator strengths (f), as well as transition dipole moments (μeg). These dyes showed a negative solvatochromic shift from non-polar to polar solvent. The quantitative analysis of charge transfer from the ground to the excited state of these squaraine dyes was calculated by Reichardt's ET (30) scale plot. The comparative electrochemical, as well as the thermal study of these unsymmetrical squaraines, were studied with the aid of cyclic voltammetry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Additionally, A2-D2-A1-D1 type dye (USQ-1) showed an improved photo-stability compared to D2-A1-D1 type dye (USQ-2). The computational (theoretical) study of these dyes was supported with the assistance of density functional theory (DFT) together with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT).

Abstract
The excited state dynamics processes of two diphenylamine substituted symmetric 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives in different solvents were studied through femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. It was revealed that in cyclohexane, the locally excited (LE) state relaxes to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state within 2 ps timescale, then decays to the ground state. In tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile, the ICT state can be stabilized via solvation, so besides the LE → ICT conversion within 1 ps, another ICT → solvent stabilized ICT (SSICT) conversion in the 1-200 ps time scale could also be observed, and eventually decay to the ground state. Whereas, ICT → SSICT process in acetonitrile is slower than that in tetrahydrofuran, which leads to radiationless deactivation dominates the ICT state deactivation process and low fluorescence quantum efficiency. These results offer a guidance to understand the relationship of low fluorescence quantum efficiency and excited state deactivation mechanism of organic π-conjugated molecules, which would be very helpful for designing new advanced opto-electronic materials.
