Abstract
This study presented the mixture of biochar and soil for removal of bisphenol A (BPA) to assess environmental remediation ability. Using phoenix tree leaves as biomass and phosphoric acid as activator, after one-step hydrothermal and short-term activation, the eventual solid product was phosphoric acid hydrothermal activated carbon (HPC). The characterizations showed that HPC had the high specific surface (994.21 m2·g-1), and large unsaturated esters and hydroxyl groups. The saturated adsorption capacities of batch and column adsorption for the addition of 0.5% HPC to soil were 0.790 mg·g-1 and 67.23 mg·kg-1, while to the natural soil were 0.236 mg·g-1 and 8.75 mg·kg-1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process utilizing HPC incorporated into soil was a chemical reaction rate-controlled, physical-dominated multilayer adsorption, and spontaneous endothermic. Also, batch adsorption experiments and analysis were performed under different pH levels, HPC contents, organic acid concentrations, and cationic strengths. Successively, fixed-bed column experiments were carried out with and without the HPC; the results showed that the wide mass transfer zone led to the effective fixation of BPA, and the organic acid had no obvious effect on the fixation of BPA when the 1.0% HPC mixed with soil. Finally, through characterizations and data analysis, the enhanced adsorption of BPA by HPC mixed with soil mainly relied on π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, followed by electrostatic attraction and pore filling.

Abstract
Cr (VI) is still of great concern due to its high toxicity, solubility, and mobility. The transformation of waste biomass to biochar is favorable for sustainable development. Hazelnut shell, an agriculture waste, was utilized as precursor to prepare biochar at 700 °C and firstly conducted for Cr (VI) removal. Nearly all 50 mg L-1 of Cr (VI) was removed from aqueous media in 180 min under the optimal conditions. The best compliance with pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.999) indicated Cr (VI) removal was a monolayer chemisorption process. The hazelnut shell biochar exhibited superior performance on Cr (VI) removal at low pH (2.0) and Cr (VI) concentrations (≤ 50 mg L-1). Various techniques illustrated that the predominant mechanism of Cr (VI) removal by hazelnut shell biochar involved electrostatic attraction, reduction, and complexation. This study provides a promising low-cost alternative for Cr (VI) elimination from acidic wastewater and groundwater after extraction following by pH adjustment to 2.0.

Abstract
Aminated lignin (AL) was obtained by modifying technical lignin (TL) with the Mannich reaction, and aminated lignin-based titanate nanotubes (AL-TiNTs) were successfully prepared based on the AL by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method. The characterization of AL-TiNTs showed that a Ti-O bond was introduced into the AL, and the layered and nanotubular structure was formed in the fabrication of the nanotubes. Results showed that the specific surface area increased significantly from 5.9 m2/g (TL) to 188.51 m2/g (AL-TiNTs), indicating the successful modification of TL. The AL-TiNTs quickly adsorbed 86.22% of Cr(VI) in 10 min, with 99.80% removal efficiency after equilibration. Under visible light, AL-TiNTs adsorbed and reduced Cr(VI) in one step, the Cr(III) production rate was 29.76%, and the amount of total chromium (Cr) removal by AL-TiNTs was 90.0 mg/g. AL-TiNTs showed excellent adsorption capacities of Zn2+ (63.78 mg/g), Cd2+ (59.20 mg/g), and Cu2+ (66.35 mg/g). After four cycles, the adsorption capacity of AL-TiNTs still exceeded 40 mg/g. AL-TiNTs showed a high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 95.86% in simulated wastewater, suggesting a promising practical application in heavy metal removal from wastewater.

Abstract
Coal fly ash was functionalized and modified with graphene oxide and polyaniline (CFA/GO/PANI nanocomposite) through hydrothermal synthesis, which was used for remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time on the removal of Cr(VI). The ideal pH for this work was 2, and it was used for all other studies. The Cr(VI)-loaded spent adsorbent CFA/GO/PANI + Cr(VI) was reused as a photocatalyst for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The CFA/GO/PANI nanocomposite removed Cr(VI) ions rapidly. The adsorption process was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm model. The CFA/GO/PANI nanocomposite demonstrated a high adsorption capacity of 124.72 mg/g for Cr(VI) removal. In addition, the Cr(VI)-loaded spent adsorbent played a significant role in the photocatalytic degradation of BPA with 86% degradation. The reuse of the Cr(VI)-loaded spent adsorbent as a photocatalyst presents a new solution for the reduction of secondary waste from the adsorption process.

Abstract
In this study, the manganese (Mn) was doped in the MnFe2O4 crystal by the solid-phase synthesis method. Under the optimum conditions (pH = 3), the max removal rate and adsorption quantity of Cr(VI) on MnFe2O4 adsorbent obtain under pH = 3 were 92.54% and 5.813 mg/g, respectively. The DFT calculation results indicated that the adsorption energy (Eads) between HCrO4- and MnFe2O4 is -215.2 KJ/mol. The Cr(VI) is mainly adsorbed on the Mn atoms via chemical bonds in the form of HCrO4-. The adsorption of Mn on the MnFe2O4 surface belonged to chemisorption and conformed to the Pseudo-second-order equation. The mechanism investigation indicated that the Mn in MnFe2O4 has an excellent enhancement effect on the Cr(VI) removal process. The roles of Mn in the Cr(VI) removal process included two parts, providing adsorbing sites and being reductant. Firstly, the Cr(VI) is adsorbed onto the MnFe2O4 via chemisorption. The Mn in MnFe2O4 can form ionic bonds with the O atoms of HCrO4-/CrO42-, thus providing the firm adsorbing sites for the Cr(VI). Subsequently, the dissolved Mn(II) can reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The disproportionation of oxidized Mn(III) produced Mn(II), causing Mn(II) to continue to participate in the Cr(VI) reduction. Finally, the reduced Cr(III) is deposited on the MnFe2O4 surface in the form of Cr(OH)3 colloids, which can be separated by magnetic separation.

Abstract
A simple method was used to synthesize magnetic xanthate-modified chitosan/polyacrylic acid hydrogels that were used to remove heavy metal ions from an aqueous solution. Xanthate modification of chitosan significantly improved adsorption performance: individual adsorption capacities of the hydrogel for Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Co(II) ions were 206, 178, 168, and 140 mg g-1, respectively. The magnetic hydrogels had good regeneration ability and were effectively separated from the solution by use of a magnet. Adsorption kinetic data showed that the removal mechanism of heavy metal ions from the solution by magnetic hydrogels occurs mainly by chemical adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption isotherms were well-described by the Freundlich and Langmuir equations. Positive values were found for the Gibbs standard free energy and enthalpy, indicating an increase in the disorder at the solid-liquid interface during adsorption. Magnetic xanthate-modified chitosan-based hydrogels that exhibit high adsorption efficiency, regeneration, and easy separation from a solution have broad development prospects in various industrial sewage and wastewater treatment fields.

Abstract
A high-performance mesoporous biochar (MBCX) was fabricated from chicken bone via a facile and low-energy consumption pyrolysis process without any additional activators and templates. The physicochemical properties of biochar were carried out by elemental compositions, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, FTIR, and TG. The results illustrated that lower carbonization temperature leaded to a lower specific surface area and more polar functional groups. And the meso-structure of biochar was obtained at 350 °C. Combined with the result of batch experiment, Cr(VI) adsorption capacity was decreased with the increasing in pyrolysis temperature, which suggested that the removal performance was depended on the functional groups of mesoporous biochar rather than the surface area. Kinetic analysis showed that the Cr(VI) adsorption process on MBCX was suitable for Elovich kinetic. The experimental data was well explained by Langmuir isotherm models. And the maximum adsorption capacity was 58.195 mg/g, which was higher than that of most report pristine biochars. This work not only paved a way for subsequent mesoporous biochar preparation but also demonstrated the application potentials of MBCX as an environment benign Cr(VI) adsorbent.
