Static and dynamic properties of nano-confined water in room-temperature ionic liquids

Ionic Liquids in Metal, Photo-, Electro-, and (Bio) Catalysis

Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Structural evolution of water-in-propylene carbonate mixtures revealed by polarized Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics

The liquid structure of systems wherein water is limited in concentration or through geometry is of great interest in various fields such as biology, materials science, and electrochemistry. Here, we present a combined polarized Raman and molecular dynamics investigation of the structural changes that occur as water is added incrementally to propylene carbonate (PC), a polar, aprotic solvent that is important in lithium-ion batteries. Polarized Raman spectra of PC solutions were collected for water mole fractions 0.003 ≤ χwater ≤ 0.296, which encompasses the solubility range of water in PC. The novel approach taken herein provides additional hydrogen bond and solvation characterization of this system that has not been achievable in previous studies. Analysis of the polarized carbonyl Raman band in conjunction with simulations demonstrated that the bulk structure of the solvent remained unperturbed upon the addition of water. Experimental spectra in the O-H stretching region were decomposed through Gaussian fitting into sub-bands and comparison to studies of dilute HOD in D2O. With the aid of simulations, we identified these different bands as water arrangements having different degrees of hydrogen bonding. The observed water structure within PC indicates that water tends to self-aggregate, forming a hydrogen bond network that is distinctly different from the bulk and dependent on concentration. For example, at moderate concentrations, the most likely aggregate structures are chains of water molecules, each with two hydrogen bonds.

Structural Features of the [C4mim][Cl] Ionic Liquid and Its Mixtures with Water: Insight from a 1H NMR Experimental and QM/MD Study

The 1H NMR chemical shift of water exhibits non-monotonic dependence on the composition of an aqueous mixture of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C4mim][Cl], ionic liquid (IL). A clear minimum is observed for the 1H NMR chemical shift at a molar fraction of the IL of 0.34. To scrutinize the molecular mechanism behind this phenomenon, extensive classical molecular dynamics simulations of [C4mim][Cl] IL and its mixtures with water were carried out. A combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach based on the density functional theory was applied to predict the NMR chemical shifts. The proliferation of strongly hydrogen-bonded complexes between chloride anions and water molecules is found to be the reason behind the increasing 1H NMR chemical shift of water when its molar fraction in the mixture is low and decreasing. The model shows that the chemical shift of water molecules that are trapped in the IL matrix without direct hydrogen bonding to the anions is considerably smaller than the 1H NMR chemical shift predicted for the neat water. The structural features of neat IL and its mixtures with water have also been analyzed in relation to their NMR properties. The 1H NMR spectrum of neat [C4mim][Cl] was predicted and found to be in very reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Finally, the experimentally observed strong dependence of the chemical shift of the proton at position 2 in the imidazolium ring on the composition of the mixture was rationalized.

Neural Network Analysis of Electron Microscopy Video Data Reveals the Temperature-Driven Microphase Dynamics in the Ions/Water System

Real-time field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurements and neural network analysis were successfully merged to observe the temperature-induced behavior of soft liquid microdomains in mixtures of different ionic liquids with water. The combination of liquid FE-SEM and in situ heating techniques revealed temperature-driven solution restructuring for ions/water systems with different water states and their critical point behavior expressed in a rapid switch between thermal expansion and shrinkage of liquid microphases at temperatures of ≈100-130 °C, which was directly recorded on electron microscopy videos. Automation of FE-SEM video analysis by a neural network approach allowed quantification of the morphological changes in ions/water systems during heating on the basis of thousands of images processed with a speed almost equal to the frame rate of original electron microscopy videos. Tracking and evolution of the micro-heterogeneous domains, hypothesized in the Ioliomics concept, was mapped and quantified for the first time. The present study describes the concept for quick acquisition of big data in electron microscopy, develops rapid neural network analysis and shows how to link microscopic data to fundamental molecular properties.

Revisiting Ionic Liquid Structure-Property Relationship: A Critical Analysis

In the last few years, ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of extensive studies concerning the relationship between structure and properties and how this impacts their application. Despite a large number of studies, several topics remain controversial or not fully answered, such as: the existence of ion pairs, the concept of free volume and the effect of water and its implications in the modulation of ILs physicochemical properties. In this paper, we present a critical review of state-of-the-art literature regarding structure–property relationship of ILs, we re-examine analytical theories on the structure–property correlations and present new perspectives based on the existing data. The interrelation between transport properties (viscosity, diffusion, conductivity) of IL structure and free volume are analysed and discussed at a molecular level. In addition, we demonstrate how the analysis of microscopic features (particularly using NMR-derived data) can be used to explain and predict macroscopic properties, reaching new perspectives on the properties and application of ILs.

Molecular Dynamics Insights into the Nanoscale Structural Organization and Local Interaction of Aqueous Solutions of Ionic Liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Nitrate

Considering the growing number of applications of the aqueous ionic liquids (ILs), atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to probe the effect of water molar fraction, x_w, ranging from 0.00 to 0.90, on the nanoscale local structure of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate, [bmim][NO₃], IL. The results prove that, with water addition, the cation-anion, cation-cation, and anion-anion structural correlations are weakened, while strong anion-water and unconventional cation-water hydrogen bonds are formed in the solutions. Water molecules were detected as bridges between nitrate anions, and the water cluster size distribution at different x_w's was investigated. Simulation shows a similar pattern of probability densities for water and anion around the acidic hydrogen atoms of the reference cation ring, while both species move away from the cation butyl chain. Increasing the water concentration to x_w = 0.90 causes decreasing of the local arrangement of the nearest-neighboring cations, because of the weakening of cation-cation π-π stacking. In addition, this dilution reduces the probability of the in-plane cation-anion conformation, disrupts both the polar ionic network and nonpolar domains, and diminishes the nanoaggregation of the cation butyl chains compared to those of the neat IL. These results can rationalize the origins of the fluidity enhancements and transport property trends upon adding water to the imidazolium-based ILs. The current study proposes a deep atomistic-level insight into the complex coupling between water concentration, microscopic structure, and local interactions of aqueous imidazolium-based ILs with hydrophilic anions.

Molecular Assembling in Mixtures of Hydrophilic 1-Butyl-1-Methylpyrrolidinium Dicyanamide Ionic Liquid and Water

The infrared absorbance spectrum of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium dicyanamide, mixed with water at two different concentrations, was measured between 160 and 300 K in the mid infrared range. Both mixtures do not crystallize on cooling; however, remarkably, the one with an ionic liquid (IL):water composition of 1:3 displays a cold crystallization process on heating in a restricted temperature range between 240 and 250 K. A portion of the water participates to the cold crystallization. On the contrary, with an IL:water composition of 1:6.6 no crystallization takes place. Upon water addition the vibration frequencies of the anion and of some lines of the cation are blue shifted, while the absorption lines of water are red shifted. These facts are interpreted as the evidence of the occurrence of the hydrogen bonding of water, as the hydrogen bonding acceptor with respect to the anion (anion∙∙∙O-H bonds develop) and as hydrogen donor for the cation (C-H∙∙∙O bonds can form). Microscopic inhomogeneities in the samples and their evolution with temperature are discussed.

Tuning Water Networks via Ionic Liquid/Water Mixtures

Water in nanoconfinement is ubiquitous in biological systems and membrane materials, with altered properties that significantly influence the surrounding system. In this work, we show how ionic liquid (IL)/water mixtures can be tuned to create water environments that resemble nanoconfined systems. We utilize molecular dynamics simulations employing ab initio force fields to extensively characterize the water structure within five different IL/water mixtures: [BMIM+][BF4−], [BMIM+][PF6−], [BMIM+][OTf−], [BMIM+][NO3−] and [BMIM+][TFSI−] ILs at varying water fraction. We characterize water clustering, hydrogen bonding, water orientation, pairwise correlation functions and percolation networks as a function of water content and IL type. The nature of the water nanostructure is significantly tuned by changing the hydrophobicity of the IL and sensitively depends on water content. In hydrophobic ILs such as [BMIM+][PF6−], significant water clustering leads to dynamic formation of water pockets that can appear similar to those formed within reverse micelles. Furthermore, rotational relaxation times of water molecules in supersaturated hydrophobic IL/water mixtures indicate the close-connection with nanoconfined systems, as they are quantitatively similar to water relaxation in previously characterized lyotropic liquid crystals. We expect that this physical insight will lead to better design principles for incorporation of ILs into membrane materials to tune water nanostructure.

Water as a tuneable solvent: a perspective

Water is the most sustainable solvent, but its polarity limits the solubility of non-polar solutes. Confining water in hydrophobic nanopores could be a way to modulate water solvent properties and enable using water as tuneable solvent (WaTuSo).
