Enzymatic preparation of hydrophobic biomass with one-pot synthesis and the oil removal performance

Oil pollution is causing deleterious damage to aquatic ecosystems and human health. The utilization of agricultural waste such as corn stalk (CS) to produce biosorbents has been considered an ecofriendly and efficient approach for removing oil. However, most previous studies focused on the modification of the whole CS, which is inefficient due to the heterogeneity of CS. In this study, corn stalk pith (CP), which has excellent amphipathic characteristics, was selected to prepare a high-efficiency oil sorbent by grafting dodecyl gallate (DG, a long-chain alkyl) onto CP surface lignin via laccase mediation. The modified biomass (DGCP) shows high hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 140.2°) and superoleophilicity (oil contact angle = 0°) and exhibits a high oil sorption capacity (46.43 g/g). In addition, DGCP has good stability and reusability for adsorbing oil from the aqueous phase. Kinetic and isotherm models and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy integrated with FTIR analyses revealed that the main sorption mechanism involves the H-bond effect, hydrophobic effect and van der Waals force. This work provides an ecofriendly method to prepare oil sorbents and new insights into the mechanisms underlying the removal of spilled oil from wastewater.

Aqueous Modification of Chitosan with Itaconic Acid to Produce Strong Oxygen Barrier Film

In this study, the chemical modification of chitosan using itaconic acid as a natural-based unsaturated dicarboxylic acid was investigated. In an aqueous environment, the amine group of chitosan reacts with itaconic acid to produce a chitosan derivative with pyrrolidone-4-carboxylic acid group. On the basis of the elemental analysis, 15% of the amine groups of chitosan reacted, thus creating modified chitosan with amine and carboxylic acid functionalities. Due to the presence of amine and carboxylic acid groups, the surface charge properties of the chitosan were notably altered after itaconic acid modification. In an aqueous solution, the modified chitosan exhibited zwitterionic properties, being cationic at low pH and turning anionic when the pH was increased over 6.5, whereas the original chitosan remained cationic until pH 9. Furthermore, it was demostrated that the modified chitosan was suitable for the preparation of a self-standing film with similarly high transparency but notably higher mechanical strength and oxygen barrier properties compared to a film made from the original chitosan. In addition, the thermal stability of the modified chitosan film was higher than that of the original chitosan film, and the modified chitosan exhibited flame-retardant properties.

Interfacial and Emulsion Characteristics of Oil-Water Systems in the Presence of Polymeric Lignin Surfactant

It is hypothesized that polymeric lignin surfactants have different affinities for stabilizing oil-water emulsions and that the emulsifying performance of these surfactants is highly affected by their adsorption performance at the oil-water interface. To validate this hypothesis, the adsorption performance of sulfethylated lignin (SEKL) surfactant at different oil-water interfaces was examined by assessing the contact angle, dynamic interfacial tension, and surface loading (Γ). Moreover, the interfacial adsorption kinetics of SEKL was comprehensively assessed in different oil-water systems to reveal the mechanisms of the SEKL adsorption at the interface. Also, the impacts of SEKL concentration and ionic strength on the performance of SEKL as an effective emulsifier for the emulsions were assessed. Furthermore, the droplet size and instability index of the emulsions were systematically correlated with the adsorption performance of SEKL at the interface of oil and water. For the first time, by implementing a modified Ward Toradai diffusion model, two distinct early stages of the adsorption of SEKL at the oil interface were identified. Interestingly, the second stage was the determining stage of adsorption with the diffusion-controlled mechanism when polymers reconfigured at the oil-water interface. Salt screening facilitated the clustering of SEKL upon charge repulsion elimination, which removed the energy barrier in the first stage of adsorption (ΔE_p→0 = 0), but it introduced a steric barrier upon the reconfiguration of polymers at the oil interfaces in the second stage of adsorption. In addition to the kinetics of adsorption, satisfactory correlations were observed between surface pressure (Δγ = γ_∞ - γ₀), surface loading (Γ) of polymers, and contact angle at oil interfaces on one hand and the oil droplet size and emulsion stability on the other hand.

Fabrication of a novel low-cost superoleophilic nonanyl chitosan-poly (butyl acrylate) grafted copolymer for the adsorptive removal of crude oil spills

A novel superoleophilic-hydrophobic nonanyl chitosan-poly (butyl acrylate) grafted copolymer was fabricated as a low-cost oil-adsorbent. Chitosan (CS) was coupled with a hydrophobic nonanal (N) to form nonanyl chitosan (NCS) schiff base, and followed by grafting with butyl acrylate monomers (ButA). The grafted copolymer was characterized by FTIR, TGA and SEM tools. The grafting percent was augmented and reached 88.5% with increasing ButA concentration up to 156 mM. Moreover, measurements of contact angle proved the superoleophilic character of NCS-g-poly (ButA) copolymer with an oil-contact angle 31°. Factors affecting the removal process such as contact time, oil type, oil dose, adsorbent dose, temperature and agitation speed were optimized. An increment in the oil removal (%) was observed with increasing the oil viscosity in the order of gasoil < mobil-1 oil < light crude oil < heavy crude oil. Besides, the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model and the equilibrium data were sufficiently fitted with the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity 108.79 g/g at 25 °C. Thermodynamic parameters computed from Van't Hoff plot confirmed the process to be exothermic, favorable and spontaneous. The results nominate the superoleophilic adsorbent as a potential oil- adsorbent for petroleum oil spills removal.
