Adsorption of uranyl ions from its aqueous solution by functionalized carbon nanotubes: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Functional Materials for Water Restoration: A "Fish Cage" for Efficient Capture of Pb(II) Ions

In this work, a "fish cage" material for trapping Pb(II) ions has been successfully obtained, which is a novel clathrate functionalized metal-oganic framework (Cage-MOF) by introducing free adsorption sites (SO42-). The three-dimensional (3D) cage structure of Cage-MOF gives it a larger contact area and can capture "swimming fish" (Pb(II)) like a "fishing cage" in a water solution. This is the first high-efficiency adsorption material obtained by introducing free coordination groups. Cage-MOF not only has excellent water stability but also improves the selectivity and affinity for Pb(II) ions in water because of the presence of sulfate adsorption sites, and its adsorption capacity is as high as 806 mg/g. This work shows a novel and effective idea for the synthesis of water restoration materials.

State-of-the-art predictive modeling of heavy metal ions removal from the water environment using nanotubes

In this research, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is used to investigate the efficiency of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) in removing lead ions from contaminated waters. Then the effect of functionalizing nanotubes with -COO- and COOH- functional groups and the nanotubes' absorption performance of two different concentrations of lead ions are studied. To better evaluate adsorption process, the set of descriptors, such as interaction energies, radial distribution function, etc., are calculated. The MD results show that the absorption performance is significantly improved by modifying the surface of CNT and BNNT with functional groups. In addition, the adsorption capacity increases in higher concentrations of Pb ions at BNNTCOO- and CNTCOOH systems. The interaction energy of BNNTCOO- with a concentration of 50 lead ions is - 2879.28 kJ/mol, which is about 106 kJ/mol more negative than BNNTCOO- at a concentration of 20 lead ions. Also, it is observed that the functionalization of both nanotubes with -COO- increases their absorption capacity. The obtained results from this study provide significant information about the mechanisms of lead adsorption on the surface of nanotubes.

Controllable Design and Preparation of Hollow Carbon-Based Nanotubes for Asymmetric Supercapacitors and Capacitive Deionization

Carbon-based materials are important desirable materials in areas such as supercapacitors and capacitive deionization. However, traditional commercial materials are heterogeneous and prone to agglomeration in nanoscale and have structural limitation of electrochemical and desalination performance due to poor transport channels and low capacitance of prepared electrodes. Here, we introduce the facile strategy for controllable preparation of two types of hollow carbon-based nanotubes (HCTs) with amorphous mesoporous structures, which are synthesized by employing a MnO₂ linear template method and calcination of polymer precursors. The porous N-doped HCT (NHCT) shows a specific capacitance of 412.6 F g^-1 (1 A g^-1), with 77.3% rate capability (20 A g^-1). The fabricated asymmetric MnO₂//NHCT supercapacitor displays the energy density of 55.8 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 803.9 W kg^-1. Furthermore, two typical MnO₂//HCT and MnO₂//NHCT devices both show the selective desalination performance of sulfate, and the MnO₂//NHCT device possesses a high deionization value of 11.37 mg g^-1 (500 mg L^-1 Na₂SO₄). These fabricated hollow carbon-based architectures with functional characteristics promise potential applications in energy and environmental related fields.

Facile covalent preparation of carbon nanotubes / amine-functionalized Fe3O4 nanocomposites for selective extraction of estradiol in pharmaceutical industry wastewater

As a typical steroid hormone drug, estradiol (E2) is also one of the most frequently detected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment. Herein, in response to the potential risk of E2 in steroid hormone pharmaceutical industry wastewater to human and wildlife, a novel carbon nanotubes / amine-functionalized Fe₃O₄ (CNTs/MNPs@NH₂) nanocomposites with magnetic responsive have been developed for the enrichment and extraction of E2 in pharmaceutical industry wastewater, where amino-functionalized Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs@NH₂) were used as a magnetic source. The resultant CNTs/MNPs@NH₂ possessed both the features of CNTs and desired magnetic property, enabling to rapidly recognize and separate E2 from pharmaceutical industry wastewater. Meanwhile, the CNTs/MNPs@NH₂ had good binding behavior toward E2 with fast binding kinetics and high adsorption capacity, as well as exhibited satisfactory selectivity to steroidal estrogen compounds. Furthermore, the change of pH value of aqueous phase in adsorption solvent hardly affected the adsorption of E2 by CNTs/MNPs@NH₂, and the adsorption capacity of E2 ranged from 19.9 to 17.2 mg g^-1 in the pH range of 3.0 to 11.0, which is a latent advantage of the follow-up development method to detect E2 in pharmaceutical industry wastewater. As a result, the CNTs/MNPs@NH₂ serving as a solid phase extraction medium were successfully applied to efficiently extract E2 from pharmaceutical industry wastewater. Therefore, the CNTs/MNPs@NH₂ nanocomposites could be used as a potential adsorbent for removing steroidal estrogens from water. More importantly, the developed method would provide a promising solution for the monitoring and analysis of EDCs in pharmaceutical industry wastewater.
